I would say there's a certain steadiness about her in both cases. Obviously she's not a very expressive person, but there is a definite attentiveness in her actions. She's fully capable of being the initiator, but her way of indicating that she wants to do that sort of thing is kind of this.. stoic, insistent-but questioning physicality. Like maybe Faustine is hunched over at her desk and Andrea just quietly starts giving her a shoulder rub. With Phospho she can be a bit more abrupt about it, like Phospho is tinkering at her worktable and Andrea just scoops her up.

I mean before Andrea got better at using body language it would just be like "Do you want to have sex" delivered absolutely deadpan.

anon, you have no idea how fast i started to look for the story after seeing your ask... i thought it was gonna be a single book but later found it to be in a compilation with other ovw stories... still, i managed to read lucky man on archive !

also about the humanizing part - i actually really like the nuance the writer gave him as seen in these texts:

this small bit of him trying to rationalise his actions even after knocking out the guards (illegally) was great in showing his own self-righteousness, him trying to be 'logical' and also trying to give himself an excuse that 'the circumstances had been different' to justify his actions ... he knows what he's doing isn't right, but gives himself a good reason to do so

and that last sentence, 'this would be a killing in cold blood, and he wasn't going to cross that line today'

also suggests of his moral ambiguity, he's on a really fine line between actually murdering someone vs doing it for his greater cause, and i think that really shows how human he is, because not everyone knows what's right and what's wrong, and there'll always be inner conflict within ourselves.

and this^ , when sombra wasn't able to keep in touch with him throughout their mission, despite knowing that she's in trouble bc her position's been discovered, soldier still jumps to the final conclusion that he's been abandoned .... with no proof ... no concrete evidence to show that she really bailed on him.

'there was no answer, and he'd expected none.'

i think this one line is really strong... it's telling of how soldier chooses not to rely on anyone after the fall of ovw... he's a lone wolf, not because of his stubbornness, but also due to the events of the fall of overwatch that shaped him into who he is today. he's distrustful of others (especially seen from how when he first met sombra, he gets all defensive and suspicious)

I also like how throughout the story, there's a few repeat sequences of him recollecting his experiences of the war, the sound, the pain - his ptsd still continues to haunt him to this day, and the flashbacks to ana and reaper, the two people who he's known for a long time now ... jack doesn't want to let go of the past and keeps wanting to take 'responsibility' due to his self-righteousness, he blames himself as a 'fool', and even imagines reyes punching him... is a powerful motif of his self-guilt.

notice how there's an entire page dedicated to jack thinking about reyes ... that's how much his death has affected him and he has guilt bottled up within him. (oo r76 crumbs yummy)

the bottom line is - jack is always in conflict with himself, his past, and his actions, but he is also on the verge of just letting himself go, but maintains that control within him for the sake of his own moral values

well at least, that's my interpretation of him that i gained after reading the story ..

from lovingoverwatchguys - On that Omnics Win AU thing. I see you put that Gabriel and Ana die, while Jack lives. What if Soldier 76's whole thing is a still grief-stricken Jack using vigilante methods to push for cloning Ana and Gabriel, even though it's unlikely to actually work. It makes 76's mission just as much a product of Jack's stubbornness, inability to let go, and his deep love. That hurts 😭Maybe throw him a bone in this and have Gabriel come back somehow and make r76 endgame lol

Ok, this might have made me change my decision on killing Reyes off, because I thought of something to explore that could be both interesting and incredibly fun.

So I had to check the math on this but Moira would have been 22 when the Crisis started. So though she would have never experimented on Reyes by this point, she would have probably written a thesis on entropy and preventing the rate at which things decay. Which is something I believe the Omnics would be interested in, not only because of further preserving food and crops, but also to possibly help with the cloning process. Basically I think Moira's research, even in it's early stages, would be useful in this world.

However something I want to stress is that the Omnics actually run tests to make sure what they're doing is stable... problem is when they decide to start testing this on humans they decide it would be safer to use the already deceased, and because of SEP Reyes's body already decayed slower so they thought he would be perfect...

A problem arose when they accidentally revived him...

So yeah now in this universe Reyes is still alive, the whole "Reaper" thing just happened a lot earlier. Though he doesn't actually become "Reaper", and after a few years he isn't in constant pain because the Omnics focus on, you know, stopping that. Though I do think there would be a short time where he didn't remember a lot since dying kind of fucks up your brain a bit, but he gets better.

So there, Reyes is alive now and Jack can have a happy ending for a change :)

I'd like to propose one more r76 dynamic; they were both absolutely unhinged during the war, and when they came back, they had different experiences masking. Like. Gabe ended up "less acceptable" socially bc he WAS the authority during the war, and now he's not, and he struggles with that, not because he doesn't respect Jack but because he's been wired for leadership. And now he has to relinquish control, and that does not vibe, even if he has Blackwatch. Jack masked really well, maybe too well, because he lives by the "smile and wave boys" meme on repeat in his head whenever he has to be the golden boy. It's only after the fall of OVW that they both just throw the masks to the wind and decide

i think the idea of gabe just shutting down at points and going completely non-verbal from how much of a struggle it is and jack finding him. like he felt the meltdown coming and he locks himself in his office but, oh no jack has the key. so jack finds him and goes to help but have flinches back, blackwatch is more violent or smthing idk, so he sits in front of him and talks to him until he calms down, he tries to hug gabe but gabe makes him leave from embarrassment. he’s ashamed that he can’t handle the new rules overwatch has even tho he doesn’t like admitting it.

or or or jack is super overstimulated at overwatch and struggling like crazy, when gabe comes for a meeting or something he picks up on it because he’s good at noticing the little things ppl do from blackwatch. and because he knows jack well. so he makes fun of him at first because that’s their dynamic, joking around with each other, but jack doesn’t respond he just gets even more jittery, no one else at the meeting seems to be noticing so have just grabs his hand under the table until the meeting leaves and takes him to jacks office to help him.

these got angsty sorry, i think i just rlly enjoy the idea of them masking for like angst purposes. i also think that the reason no one picks up on soldier76 being jack is because he’s unmasked completely and is just super aggressive and way more crazy on and off the battlefield, no one rlly thinks much about reaper because he’s just so different that of course he would act like a psychopath. jack notices because it reminds him of gabe and gabe notices because it reminds him of how jack actually is.

Aw, man. Remember that old 76 and Reaper cannibalism anon? Well, you reeled me back in with the reblog about cannibalism = love + the old post about wanting them to be toxic. One of the things I love about toxic R76 with the idea of 'saving his Gabe' is the folly of 76 being so stubborn that he won't accept that Reaper is not who he used to be. It's selfish and inconsiderate, but he's had so few people actually understand and accept him, and he's blinded by loneliness and grief. So, when this gets him into a situation where Reaper is just torturing him over and over, it's such classic tragedy: your own flaws made you pursue something that destroys you. Bonus: What if Reaper can full-on absorb physical parts of him as energy. Basically, draining a certain amount, and his arm is just a stump afterwards. And, he can even give the energy back and make it re-form, but it might form 'wrong'.

( part 2 ) Same one as before. I can even throw dramatic irony at it. Maybe 76 gets away someday, but this whole experience had permanent consequences, which Reaper did on purpose. Because his body had to keep being rebuilt with Reaper's nanites, it ends up with 76 getting the same condition that Reaper has. It bonds them together. They'll be in the same hell forever. It's almost affectionate, 'choosing' him that way. Their bodies are the same. In all but the most literal of the term, they're together and can never come apart.

I'm sorry, anon. I immediately thought of that Deadpool scene where he had baby legs. LMAO.

I give you another take, buddy. 76 is willing to gut Reaper just as much as Reaper wants to gut him. It's their dynamic. 76 see's just how much Gabe's fallen, all the destruction and murder he's done. He's had enough okay. There's zero redemption that's he is willing to waste effort in into Reaper and just wants him gone. They're both thorns in each others sides, it's just a matter of who will get the upper hand and kill the other. 76 is just as harden and changed Gabe is, 76 are gone too cynical compared to his start. I think that's more canon compliant to his character imo.

Which just makes it all the better if one of them has the other in their clutches.

I also headcanon that when Reaper shot 76 in the back with those decay rounds that started eating his flesh away, that shit stuck. I don't think 76 ever got anything from it but there's piece of Reaper's decay forever stuck inside him. Maybe it's also an easier way for Reaper to track 76 too. But if there's anyone who would be able to survive that type of crap it would be 76.

I dunno I just see them as two people who have lost hope one in one another. They believe it's each other's job to take the other person down at all costs. And that itself is just *chef's kiss*

Andrea is definitely one of those "Engages with kids as little as she can help it" kinds of people and yet kids still absolutely latch onto her for her weird combination of stoic indifference and focused attention.

so idk if this is an unpopular opinion amongst some circles - this one friend I’ve been chatting with is a completionist and it’s like blasphemy to her I skip around on things lol - but... I defend my decision to skip the entire flashback arc in The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling)? and then going back through it after?

Because honestly, my favorite mode of storytelling is when you meet characters later on in their life, post life-seasoning so to say , and as you go on you get the sense that there is more to their story, and through the course of it the whole thorny backstory is revealed through the cracks in the main story. To me, that’s one of my favorite types of impactful storytelling. And you just don’t get the same effect when you go through chronologically, because the impact is in the reveals.

I think that’s why my initial viewing of CQL which kind of mirrored the novel structure - since I did skip the CQL flashback stuff, but also was using the context and framework I gained from watching CQL to start going through the novel - worked for me. Because... I wasn’t invested in the lily-white fresh & unseasoned young’uns of their past selves so much, off the bat; I was invested in these characters who’ve been through a lot and been through a lot together and have a history together (which we get quite a glimpse of early on), and in finding out what exactly that history is as we’re going through the main plot. I think that while for some people, watching the past stuff first made the present stuff more meaningful, watching the present stuff & going through the plot actually made the past stuff more meaningful for me. Because ultimately, I’m invested in current WangXian, not their past selves as the primary iterations, so to me, the whole chunk of past stuff was all history and context, not a main story.

idk I’m thinking about this a lot more now that I’m going through other adaptations of MDZS and seeing the story presented more along the way the novel originally had, which was more specifically placed flashbacks vs all of the past as a whole chunk. I think having the flashback arc be a whole chunk made a lot of sense for CQL, and told a cleaner story for the medium - bc I did find the flashbacks kind of confusing in the novel, like idk maybe it was partially down to the TL formatting too or something - so I don’t think it’s an invalid storytelling method. But for me, I think the history is exactly that: history. Like, I got invested in the story of CQL/MDZS not for the vanilla unseasoned youth; I got invested in the glimmers I saw of present WangXian and the whole unspoken history between them showing between the cracks. So it’s not so much “the present stuff doesn’t have the same impact without the history” for me, so much as it “finding out what exactly all of their history together IS the impact.”

I guess... I don’t know if anyone wants or needs to hear it, or if it even matters, but my view is: watch CQL however it works for you. If you need to skip episodes because you couldn’t get into it at all, then hey fine! Do it! Like I don’t think people necessarily need to justify why they skip parts of things. It might be because of triggers; it might be because if they don’t then they’re never going to watch the rest of it because this section just really doesn’t appeal to them, but the rest of it might. (It might be because you really can’t stand watching the Yi City arc because it’s just so hellafckn sad and will make you too emo and you already have the gist of the story and watching it play out is Too Much :’) ) Like I mean we in fandom get Very Invested in things and sometimes have a hard time seeing past our own platonic ideal versions of media, including on how to consume it, but like with anything, I think just... ultimately, the goal is we’re here to have fun with it. So have fun with it however it works for you, and don’t feel like you have to feel apologetic for it, or that your takes or views would be any less valid or valuable.

Jack has a seizure and Gabriel can’t say goodbye.

Gabriel moved around the room as quickly as he could, pushing furniture out of the way and making sure there weren’t any edges pointed towards the center of the room. The shuffling noises on the floor of the living room weren’t near as distracting as his thoughts, trying to remember what he needed to be doing while Angela or Ana made their way to his house only to be brought back to the reality of what was happening.

Jack mumbled incoherent sentences, trying to reach out to him as he rolled back and forth on the carpet, and Gabriel averted his eyes for the moment as he continued moving. He needed to make sure nothing could hurt him.

After the war, after all the fighting had died down and they’d reunited, they lived many years together blissfully. Their wedding was full of tears and sarcastic comments, of joy and love. Their fighting, their past, the tension, it was all gone for a beautiful moment when all they had to look forward to was loving each other.

And they did.

They nearly made the young members of Overwatch gag every day just watching them. They were so ready to love each other and it seemed that patching up their problems from the war, from the fallout of the organization, from everything - it just made their relationship stronger.

But Jack continued aging and Gabriel did not.

Whatever had happened to him made his body unable to age. As Jack began losing his hair more and more, gaining more wrinkles, becoming less connected with the world as the years went by - Gabriel remained the same. Sure there were more experiences, more growth intellectually, but he wasn’t changing physically.

 And Jack was dying.

 The first seizure was over three months ago. It scared him to see Jack unable to move himself properly, either rolling on the ground or suddenly straightening, drool coming out of one side of his mouth where his lips weren’t holding together. He’d rushed him to Angela as soon as he could and she, at first, berated him for picking Jack up. But there was barely any time for that as she gathered necessary equipment to settle him down and get his blood sugar regulated.

After Jack had recovered Angela immediately took Gabriel to the side and told him everything that he needed to do when Jack entered one of these… because he was going to have them often now. At his age it was quite common and he’d been showing signs of dementia for almost a year.

He knew. Of course he knew, he lived with him. Every time Jack would forget where the cups were or set down his glasses and immediately ask where they were, Gabriel knew.

 Jack was leaving him.

 He wasn’t ready. Even after so many years spent together, after all this time… he wasn’t ready. He could never be ready. Who ever could? Gabriel was no stranger to death, to seeing comrades and friends die on the battlefield. But to lose the one you love, to see them slowly deteriorate in front of you… it was too much.

Finally he moved everything out of the way to a satisfactory amount and he approached Jack on the floor, worrying his lip between his teeth as he knelt down and stayed a safe distance away. Jack was still rolling on the floor, this way and that, pulling at his clothing and murmuring different things. At one point he finally strung together some sort of memory, seeming to think that they were back at their honeymoon in Ilios. Gabriel nearly choked at how intelligible it was, thinking that perhaps Jack was coming out of it for a moment, only to see him seize up once more and rip his shirt.

Angela finally arrived twenty minutes later and stuck some needle in him to sedate him so he wouldn’t move around anymore, hoping to end the seizure, and a few extra medics came in to move his body carefully onto a gurney and get him to the ambulance outside. He’d followed closely, wanting to hold Jack’s hand but knowing he couldn’t, and when Angela told him that he’d better not come inside the vehicle he winced. There was no questioning her when she said it with such a firm voice and he nodded, getting his keys to follow in his car instead.

There was no sound in his car, no music as he drove behind the flashing lights of the ambulance in front of him. The last few times they’d made this trip he was inside there with him. If he was being told not to follow inside the vehicle then something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong. His throat clenched at thinking of everything that could possibly go wrong but he fought that back as soon as he felt it rising in him. This was no time to suddenly get emotional. Jack needed him to be strong for both of them at this point.

The hospital reeked of antibiotics and hand sanitizer and he wrinkled his nose as he walked down the hallways towards the emergency room. There was a large curtain drawn and he could hear Angela’s voice calling out for various things before it finally registered what had happened.

The call for the defibrillator made time slow down as he was suddenly acutely aware of the slowing tones from the heart monitor on the other side of the curtain. There was a pause and then his own heart felt like it was stopping as the tone rang for longer than just a beat.

A pulse of electricity ran through the air as the machine was used and he realized immediately that it was no use. He could see it, the soul orb, drifting closer to the curtain as Angela frantically pressed the metal to Jack’s chest two more times. Her voice was strained, choking, as she called out ‘clear!’ and Gabriel recognized Lucio’s voice as he told her to stop.

Gabriel couldn’t look at the orb, couldn’t look at the curtain as Ana came up beside him silently and placed a hand on his arm. Everything seemed to dull. He couldn’t hear clearly, Angela’s choked sobbing seemed far off and distant as well as the nurse’s words to him about the status of his husband.

Jack was gone.
