Thing you might not have known, but yes, gladiators actually were made to promote/advertise objects in the arena when coming out. Seriously...they were celebrities in their era and product placement ads (live time) were a real fucking thing.

It's also why, contrary to the "popular take" of the thumbs down killing of gladiators, that was SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER and I Mean SUPER rare.

These were THE PEAK of entertainment back then. They were housed, fed, trained, paid sums, they were given whores, a lot of money went into them.

It'd be like taking your race track sponsored exoticar with legit major brand sponsors/deals and then going, DAMN, I LOST THAT RACE, FUCK IT, TOTAL MY CAR.

What?

Yeah, no. 9/10 gladiators survived their matches.

They also didn't fight all the time. We're taking 3-5 times a year. This overlaps a bit with pro boxer fights in a year 2-4.

This isn't even taking into account the myth of thumbs up/thumbs down. But...yeah.

Video Game idea: ExotiCare

So I've talked about this game idea on Twitter before, but it kinda went under appreciated there so I thought I give it a shot hear since Tumblr doesn't have a character cap.

ExotiCare is a hypothetical game I've wanted for a while, essentially its a simulator game that gives you the experience of an exotic animal owner, obtaining, caring for, and even breeding a wide array of different pets that are essentially anything that isn't a cat or dog. The game will try to stick animals that are in the pet trade, but allow some room for animals that my not be in the trade but could be.

Before buying animals, you need to have money. Players will be given multiple choices before starting a run of the game, such as what country they start in, and what rung of the economic ladder they start at. The hardest option being someone in a rented house working a 9-5, which, including eating and sleeping, drastically reduces the amount of time you have to care for animals. As the game progresses you'll get opportunities to progress by buying a house, breeding animals and selling them on social media or an official store page, starting monetized online platforms on video or picture sets and more. Though you can also choose to start in a more economically safe setting or in a purely creative setting where money, sleep and eating are not a problem.

To obtain animals, players can either go to a set amount of stores in a small over world, catch animals during certain seasons (required for a group specified below), or browse the web and find various exotic pet sellers and (ETHICAL) animal catchers who can get you species you won't normally find on the pet trade. The latter two is where you're gonna get most of you animals.

The animal roster for the game would consist of animals that are in the pet trade and those that I am unsure of or I know aren't but reasonably could be in the future. An example of species on the pet trade would be Hercules Beetles, Rats, Crested Geckos, Alien Head Mantises, Sugar Gliders, Antilles Pinktoes, Hognose Snakes, Axolotls, etc. Now, the more hypothetical animals would be essentially animals in the same genus as previously mentioned species, or ones in the same group that we know enough about to make a somewhat approximate care sheet for, though some would be given a disclaimer that says that the information on the care sheet may not be completely accurate, and to not use it to care for the same animal in an irl setting. These hypothetical care sheets would be updated to be more accurate as more information about the species is publicized. Examples of animals that fit into this more hypothetical category would be like the Tiger Beetle Manticora scabra, Myrmarachne jumping spiders and the millipede-eating centipede Edentistoma octosulcatum. Animals that won't be featured are basically any animals thats obviously a stupid idea to keep. Komodo Dragons, Marine Iguanas, Majority of crocodilians, bears, wolves, Koalas, animals that can never be pets because there is no way a human would be able to provide for them or it would be way more dangerous than anything on the pet trade.

That being said, the player will have access to some animals that are dangerous but are still present in the pet trade. The game would have warnings on both the in-game shop pages and on care sheets. This will be mostly in regards to venomous animals, specifically venomous snakes since they are most likely to bite you out of any other venomous animal, though these warnings will exist for others like iguanas, which are still dangerous, but are not venomous.

Ants & Relatives (Note: What ant species you own depends on what state / country you choose at the start of a run. If you start in Pennsylvania you are limited to ant species in Pennsylvania. If you start in the philippines, you are limited to ant species in the philippines. Velvet ant species can be purchased in any county, though).

Birds

Brackish Fish

Centipedes

Coral

Crabs

Crickets & Grasshoppers

Freshwater Fish

Frogs & Toads

Harvestmen

Isopods

Lizards

Mammals

Mantises

Millipedes

Moths & Butterflies

Phasmids (Stick Insects)

Pseudoscorpions

Roaches

Salamanders & Newts

Snails & Slugs

Snakes

Solifuges (Camel Spiders)

This isn't definitive, of course, this is just all the groups I know have species on the pet trade. I will add more as I research.

All that being said, whats the appeal? Well there's multiple reasons a game like this could appeal to someone. For many of us, having a large collection of exotic pets is unfeasible, so a virtual outlet for that desire would be a good way to scratch that itch. This reason could also appeal to people who are against the pet trade but still enjoy the idea of caring for a menagerie of critters. Those looking for a creative outlet may also be interested in the creative aspect, creating beautiful terrarium and aquarium for the critters to inhabit.

For now that's all I wanna say about the game. There's more ideas I have for mechanics and the sort, but I also want this post to be manageable, so I'll end it there. In the slim chance any game developers see this and want to run with the idea, feel free to. Though, if possible I would like to play a role in development, and not just as an ideas guy. I am a creative writer and have a small portfolio of works I can share. You may need someone to make all the different online shops and create the many social media posts for the in-game websites and I'd be more than happy to provide. I'd even work for free till the game went into crowd funding, started a patreon, or was released in early access. Just need something to breakout as a creative writer. I could also do research, interview animal breeders, collectors and sellers to help make the game more authentic. I know its a little cringe to advertise myself on a post like this, but you can't blame a guy for wanting to be involved in an idea he's passionate about.
