it's where I belong
Summary: Rancher Boy!Javier Peña’s queer awakening
Tags: bisexual Javier Peña (although his identity is not explicitly stated); the bartender ships it; javier peña x OMC
Words: 1,937
Note: Title (and general inspo for this installment) is taken from the song Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan. You don't have to read the rest of Rancher Boys for this to make sense, but you should bc it's great 😌 Happy pride :)
Masterlist
Once, Javier Peña walked into a bar in June.
It wasn’t that kind of bar. Or at least, he hadn’t thought it was. But looking around, he noticed a lot of people who seemed…sparkly, somehow. And affectionate. And there, on the back wall by the pool tables, hung a large, rainbow-striped flag, fluttering over the bricks.
“Can I get you anything?” A bartender appeared in his line of sight.
Javier tore his gaze from the flag.
“Whiskey, on the rocks.”
The bartender adjusted her cutoff flannel while the card machine booted up. It was tied beneath her chest, and the edges of a tattoo snaked along her ribs, the finer details blending into skin darker than Javi’s.
As Javi took out his card, he started, “Is this a…a bar for…”
Lord only knew what he thought he was trying to say. Thankfully, the bartender took pity on him. “A gay bar?”
“…Yeah.”
“Not explicitly. ‘We’re friendly to all’,” the woman quoted pointedly. She pushed a coaster toward him with that very declaration stamped beneath a depiction of a familiar sign. Friendly’s, read the green neon loops- the same as the ones above the door he’d entered through.
Ah.
“We just like to make sure everyone knows.” Her head tilted. “Is that a problem?”
“No,” Javier said.
After a beat, the bartender relaxed. “There’s not usually this much rainbow stuff in here. But we always go big for pride month.”
“Pride month?” Belatedly, Javi recalled the rainbow logos and merchandise that he’d noticed appearing over the past few days. Because it was…June? “Oh.”
The bartender had stepped back to dry some clean glasses. Now she smiled slightly, turning to face him. “You new in town?”
From a booth near the pool table, several voices rose in chorus with a soulful pop song playing from the speakers. Five sets of masculine shoulders swayed; they exhibited not a shred of self-consciousness. The bartender sent them a fond look.
“Temporarily. I’m here for a few weeks on business, with my pa.” Javi sipped his whiskey, the burn a warm, familiar comfort.
“Workin’ hard, then,” she deadpanned.
Before Javier could reply, her face softened, all her attention diverted to a second woman that had appeared beside him, leaning over the bar. Her black sequined top let out a spill of cleavage that Javi quickly averted his gaze from.
“Hola, mi amor,” the second woman cooed.
“Hola, nena.” The bartender set down her work and met the woman over the bar top with a lingering kiss.
“Puedo tomar una bebida? Tengo mucho sed,” the woman purred. Can I have a drink? I’m so thirsty. But it wasn’t any of the bottles behind the bar that claimed her attention. Her eyes danced up and down the bartender’s body, gleaming.
She angled Javi a sharp, appraising glance. Javi met her gaze, then deliberately looked away, sipping his drink. Satisfied, she sat back on her stool.
The bartender, after extracting another kiss from the woman, brought her a glass of something clear and full of ice, and Javier listened to them talk. About their days, about their friend’s new cat, about what to have for dinner tomorrow. They sounded like every other couple Javier had ever known. They could have been Steve and Connie, if Steve and Connie knew anyone who would adopt a hairless cat or complained about gringos clogging up their favorite taco place.
Two of the men in the booth embraced when the song they’d been singing ended. One of their friends threw a fry at them, dramatically lamenting his own singlehood. Javi looked down and swirled the ice cube remaining in his glass, feeling simultaneously alone and strangely reluctant to leave.
The bartender reappeared in front of him. “Another whiskey?”
Clearing his throat, Javier straightened. “No, I shouldn’t. Thank you.” He made to stand and don his sunglasses
“Come back anytime. A lot of nice people come in this time of year.”
Javi gave a nod to her and then to her partner. The woman smiled in return, and Javier left the rainbow flags rippling behind him.
—
Twice, Javier Peña walked into a bar in June.
It wasn’t that kind of bar, but you wouldn’t know it looking around. The place was full of bubbly, happy people of every appearance on the gender spectrum, and some off the spectrum besides. Rainbow was too limited of a word to describe the variety of colors on flags.
All the same, it felt…relaxed. Homey. Pool balls cracked from a trio of tables. Too-big groups squashed into booths, giggling over knocked elbows and pressed-together thighs. Dancing broke out sporadically, the odd couple swaying alone or groups unable to resist the combination of the music playing and the contents of their glasses.
“Oye, whiskey boy!” The bartender Javi had met before popped up behind the counter in front of him. “Nice to see you again. The same on the rocks?”
Tonight she could have been mistaken for a college bartender, in a t-shirt snipped and tied to within an inch of its life. Glitter streaked her long black braids. Javier couldn’t help but wonder if her more feminine partner had had a hand in either statement. Tonight the bartender’s eyes were wide and bright, as if absorbing the energy in the bar and reflecting it back.
“Just a beer, thanks.”
Javi found a stool near the end of the bar, bottle in hand. He didn’t really have a plan of any kind. He could, technically, take someone back to his hotel room, but he didn’t relish the thought of his [pops] potentially seeing them leave tomorrow morning. He wasn’t in the market to make friends. His usual play was to nurse a few drinks while people-watching alone, but somehow that felt…wrong, here.
Or maybe it was Javier who was wrong. This place sure felt like a gay bar tonight, and he didn’t really have a place in one of those. Everyone else seemed to have friends and lovers and grins on their faces. What was he doing here, besides bringing the mood down with his brooding?
“You’re looking at that bottle like it’s about to break your heart.”
Javier looked up (and up, and up) at a man with desert-blond hair sticking out from under a Texas A&M ballcap. He was good-looking, Javi supposed, and dressed pretty normally if you didn’t count the sinfully tight fit of his shirt. He might have been one of few people in the bar besides Javi himself who didn’t have rhinestones somewhere on their person. Fine lines were just visible at the corners of his eyes, so it might have been his rangy build- or maybe the openness of his smile- that made him look young.
All of Javi's dependable wittiness seemed to have fled. His mouth quirked by muscle memory. “Nah, beer’s about the only thing that hasn’t broken my heart,” Javi tried.
The younger man laughed. “Can I get you another one, then?”
And so Javi allowed himself to be drawn into conversation with the man. Jason, his name was. The bartender gave him a friendly nod as she deposited their drinks- he must have been a regular here. It was nice, talking to someone- about himself, about Jason, about nothing at all. This kind of…companionship, however brief it would end up being, was something Javier hadn’t realized he’d been missing.
He relaxed into it. Into the comfortable, friendly atmosphere of the bar. Javi wasn’t blind. He saw the admiration in the younger (for he was indeed slightly younger) man’s eyes, heard the comments that tiptoed just this side of flirtatious. He didn’t discourage it. Why would he? It felt like it’d been a damn long time since Javier had been so enjoyed.
And he found himself enjoying Jason in return. There was a warmth, an awareness prickling in Javi’s chest that he recognized. It spread the longer they sat and talked, sparked in his fingers, the ends of his hair. It felt like…something loosening in him. Some knot unraveling that he hadn’t ever acknowledged was there.
As the night wound down, though- as their knees bumped and their laughter came warmer- Javier felt the knot drawing tighter again. He came to a decision. Quickly, gruffly, he confessed: he’d never done this before. He hadn’t set out find someone like this, didn’t want Jason to feel used- but Javi did want him. Had he mentioned that part?
As Javi half-stood from his stool, breathing hard, mouth dry, Jason’s look of surprise melted into something else. He placed his hand on Javi’s knee. Jason’s warm smile set fire to Javier, and the knot in his chest turned to ash and flaked away.
—
There was more than one knot to his fears, Javier would discover. There was a whole web, intricately tangled and connected to subjects he would have never imagined. Some of the knots he picked at thoroughly, taking the time to smooth every kink (ahem) in their connecting cords. Some, he would realize, during the course of his research, were actually stupid, and these he excised without a second thought. Others, he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to undo completely.
But that was for future-Javi to worry about. Present-Javi was tangled in much more pleasant things, like bedsheets and Jason’s unexpectedly strong arms. They spent many long, long nights together over the next few weeks. A few mornings, too, making Chucho raise his eyebrows upon seeing his son dash back through the hotel to shower, shirt buttoned askew and sweat still gleaming on his neck.
It was a dizzying fling. But Jason was a good teacher, and Javi had never been one to shy from a challenge. By the end he’d have Jason flush-faced and gasping, making jokes like “my best student” and “Remind me to bring you a gold star next time”.
Javi didn’t remind him, of course, and Jason didn’t bring any gold stars.
He brought something else.
“I got you a present,” he said, and Javi did a double take.
“What?”
“I mean, it’s just a little thing, they sell them everywhere during pride month, and I just thought…” Jason shrugged, fidgeting bashfully, and held out his hand.
In it sat a small pin in the shape of a waving flag. Its rainbow stripes were unmistakable. Javi stared at it, his throat constricting. Slowly, he took it from Jason’s palm, the metal cool against his fingertips.
“You got me a pride pin.”
“You don’t have to wear it, or put it anywhere visible, obviously. I just thought…to remember me by. To remember yourself by.” Jason looked up from under his lashes then. Whatever else Javier took from their time together, Jason wanted him to remember the significant conversations they’d had.
Emotion swelled unexpectedly in Javier’s chest. He reached out, wrapped his fingers in Jason’s hair, and tugged him closer. Jason accepted his kiss with a sigh of pleasure, and they spent the next several minutes memorizing each other’s taste, the feel of their bodies pressed together, warm and firm.
Finally they parted, lips swollen, breath mingling. “Thank you,” Javier said, voice rough. “I’ll remember.”
He didn’t wear the pin. But he put it in his pocket, and it gave him a little jolt every time the edges poked him.
–
Their paths didn't cross again. But Javi takes the rainbow pin with him everywhere he travels, and on a ranch in Tennessee, he takes it out and studies it. He thinks of a man, and a woman, and another flag striped in red, blue, and black.
Thanks for reading :) ♥️♥️

The First Friday Pity Party
First Friday in Colorado Springs is like a holiday in my mind. It is this exceptionally special night when art lovers, creators and appreciators crawl across town drinkin up the culture of our city.
This First Friday proved to be just that.
The much anticipated annual "Gratitude" show opened at Auric Gallery. After their fabulous face-lift last year, the gallery is back in its steady groove and, of course, brought this exhibition back for another round.
It's always wonderful to see familiar names in this 155-artist-lineup. I'm talking Lupita Carrassco, Becca Day, and the folks that have made our town so colorful for many years.
But what was really exciting for me was some fresh media from fairly new dogs on the block.
I was so pleasantly pleased to find an immersive installation by Jacqueline Moulton tucked in the back area of Auric. Moulton, while not having lived here quite as long as many of the familiar big names at Auric, has absolutely made an impacful splash.
Before I tell you about Gratitude, I gotta paint you a picture of this incredible artist.
You may find Jacqueline teaching poetry at Cottonwood, her neon red hair and expressive, funky fashion glowing through the room. She has an incredible energy that is welcoming and honestly, refreshing. She is always adorned in color every time I catch her around town. A living, breathing rainbow. Aside from her being a walking art piece, Moulton is also a professional lifter. Like weight lifter. Like buff-as-hell powerhouse. Follow her on socials if you don't believe me. She is a multi-faceted and layered character for sure, which is why I find it necessary to tell you about her before I tell you about what I saw.
Moulton's installation is entitled " The Pity Party Hotline." This manifests as a walk-in phone booth fashioned with plastic flowers, fake astroturf, and a sort of half-hearted puff of confetti.
Here, visitors can use the provided phone inside to listen to poetic readings from the artist. They touch on grief, loneliness, and being on the outside. The poems are read in a professional and lightly monotone manner.
This particular piece feels a little odd and out of sorts amongst the abstract paintings and classical media. But this is exactly what Moulton does. There's something liminal and transporting about this installation. It's the cartoonish plastic of it all. The upfront aesthics and comically straightforward style sits in opposition to the intensity of the topics you'll hear once you call in.
On the line, our operator says, "Your anguish, your sorrows, your woes are important to us"
Clinical yet reassuring.
Funny but touching.
Alot of duality is present here.
It's a lot like who I imagine Jacqueline to be.
Two vastly different things in one form.
The colorful creative
The serious athlete.
There's some poetry hiding in there.
I got alot out of my short visit inside the installation. It's refreshing to laugh about the seriousness of our delicate little hearts. It's a lonely and grief-heavy world out there, so it is nice to hear it spoken about in such a gentle way.
Gratitude is an absolute must-see this month, but do not make the mistake of skipping this backroom installation. If you want to check it out from home, call the Hotline at any time by dialing 719-785-0723.
Auric Gallery is open Tues-Sun 12-5pm
125 E. Boulder St. Colorado Springs.
Until next time.
Xoxo

I may be misunderstanding something, but what's the problem with security cameras in the NATM universe? While watching the entire franchise, I noticed several moments where providing security camera footage could've solved some of the plot problems, but none of the characters (including Larry, since he's the main character) used them.
For example, every time McPhee reprimanded Larry for the mess the exhibits made in the museum, Larry didn't counter his lectures and took the responsibility for it on himself, although he could've taken the security camera footage and shown it to McPhee. Of course, it's understandable that Larry didn't do that so as not to inadvertently put the exhibits and himself in sort of danger, yet in "Secret of the Tomb" he tried to convince McPhee of the magic of the tablet, even though it was a forced measure, but maybe that wasn't the point idk. After all, in such an important place as museum that contains very valuable historical artifacts (like the tablet of Ahkmenrah), security cameras should be installed literally on every corner, if I'm not mistaken.
Another example: Larry could've used the footage from the security cameras to convince Rebecca more quickly that the exhibits were actually coming to life at night and not make himself look like a crazy person.
After all, Larry could've used the camera on his phone, taken some photos or made a video, and later shown it all to the people he was trying to prove the life in the museum (although the situation with McPhee would've been more complicated, since he was trying to convince himself that the life in the museum wasn't real).
At first I had the somewhat dumb thought that there were no security cameras at all in the NATM universe or that they weren't used that much, but no; in "Battle of the Smithsonian," they were demonstrated in a scene where Larry showed the security guard an identity card through the camera:

And heck, didn't any of the guards at the Smithsonian Institution, such an important government place, see through the cameras all the mess caused by the exhibits and Larry in particular?
There was a similar situation in "Secret of the Tomb", but this time with the British Museum and Tilly; she had surveillance monitors in her guard booth, and she was even able to see Laa's rampage through them (I don't have a screenshot of this moment sorry). But at the same time, she didn't see the moving exhibits and adventures of Larry's gang around the museum. And I know that she was asleep at the moment of their adventures, but let's leave that aside...
In general, the whole thing with security cameras and similar gadgets in the NATM franchise seems pretty strange to me, because due to some of the flaws with it, there were plenty of inconsistencies. And yes, I completely understand that this aspect was omitted in favor of the plot and the length of the movies, but that doesn't change the lack of logic in not using security cameras in many of the appropriate situations.

I am going to the Midwest Gaming Classic convention in Milwaukee soon! They have a massive exhibit of pinball machines to look at. Are there any tables I should look for while I am there?
I adore MGC! It’s my favorite Arcade/gaming expo. I’m unfortunately not gonna be there this year, but I do have some great recommendations for games to check out!
Try and Multimorphics booth, and play their P3 pinball machine. The P3 is the most unique pinball machine I’ve ever seen tbh. It has a screen under the playfield and it’s modular so you can install different games into the machine. Their new Princess bride game should be at the show and available to play. I highly recommend it. (Also play final resistance if that have it there)
Secondly, try to play Galactic Tank Force, and Barry O’s BBQ challenge from American pinball. The folks at AP are the only pinball manufacturer in history who have never put out a bad game. Every one of their machines is an absolute banger.
At the Marco Pinball/Stern both play everything. Stern makes great games and they’ve been killing it lately. Godzilla, Foo Fighters, Jaws, and Rush are some of the best games ever made, and they will likely all be there. (I used to work for Marco Pinball, so if you see any Marco employees tell them I say hi!)
If BoF is there then check out their new labyrinth pinball machine. It’s their first game and I’ve never seen one in person so I have no idea if it’s good or not, but a new pinball company is an exciting thing!
There’s also usually a big selection of older pinball machines that at the show which are super fun to play because you don’t see those machines as often these days. The old 90s Sega Godzilla machine and the Lost World Jurassic Park machine are stand outs for me.
And lastly, MGC has a huge area for homebrew games. These are one of a kind machines made by individual people who love pinball. Play all of them. They are u pique and incredible, and you may never see these games again. Playing homebrew games is a really special experience.

The Power of Lighting in Your Exhibition Stand Design
Lighting is more than just a functional element in your Exhibition Stand Design; it’s a critical tool that can dramatically influence how visitors perceive your booth, your brand, and your products. In the competitive environment of a Trade Show or Expo Stand, the right lighting can make your booth stand out and attract the right audience. Let’s explore how lighting can help elevate your Booth Stand to the next level.
Why Lighting Matters in Exhibition Stand Design
The lighting in your Expo Stand does much more than simply illuminate your space. It sets the tone for the entire experience, enhancing the visual appeal and guiding visitors’ attention to key areas. Here’s why lighting plays such a pivotal role in your Exhibition Stand Design:
1. Create a Welcoming Atmosphere
The first thing visitors experience when they approach your Booth Stand is the atmosphere. Whether you’ve chosen a beMatrix modular system or a custom-built Exhibition Stand, the lighting is one of the primary elements that sets the mood. Soft, warm lighting creates a welcoming, friendly environment, while bright, cool lighting can convey a modern, energetic vibe. The right lighting immediately draws attention, inviting visitors to engage with your booth.
2. Enhance Product Displays
Lighting is essential for showcasing your products in the best possible way. Whether you’re displaying a new product or offering demonstrations, lighting ensures that the items on display are highlighted effectively. Spotlights and LED Strip Lighting are perfect for illuminating key products, drawing attention to their unique features, and enhancing visual appeal. For Expo Stands, strategic lighting can be the difference between a product blending into the background and it standing out.
3. Reinforce Brand Identity
Effective lighting helps reinforce your brand identity by using colors, tones, and visual effects that align with your company’s image. Whether you're using Coloured Lighting to match your brand colors or Backlit Graphics to illuminate your logo, lighting should be an extension of your branding. With beMatrix modular systems, for example, you can integrate lighting into the design seamlessly to ensure your brand identity is consistently represented across your Booth Stand.
4. Encourage Interaction
In a Trade Show environment, interaction is key. Lighting can be used to guide visitors' attention to interactive elements in your Exhibition Stand, encouraging them to engage more deeply with your booth. For example, Interactive Lighting can react to touch or movement, prompting visitors to explore certain areas or try out new products. Engaging lighting effects can also spark curiosity and increase dwell time, leading to more meaningful interactions.
Types of Lighting for Exhibition Stands
Incorporating the right types of lighting into your Booth Stand is essential for creating the desired effect. Here are some of the most effective types of lighting for Exhibition Stands:
1. Spotlights
Spotlights are ideal for focusing attention on specific products or areas within your Expo Stand. These concentrated beams of light can make products look more prominent and inviting, helping your most important offerings shine in the spotlight. This type of lighting is particularly useful when paired with beMatrix systems, where modular displays can be enhanced with spotlights on key sections.
2. LED Strip Lighting
LED Strip Lighting is incredibly versatile and energy-efficient. This type of lighting can be used to highlight the edges of your Exhibition Stand, create an ambient glow, or accentuate specific areas. LED strips can also be used to backlight graphics or displays, ensuring they stand out in any environment—perfect for modern Booth Stands that want a sleek, futuristic appearance.
3. Backlit Graphics
If your Trade Show booth features large graphics, using Backlit Graphics can create a striking visual effect that makes your marketing materials pop. Backlighting your logo, slogans, or product images ensures they are visible from a distance, making it easier for attendees to spot your booth from across the exhibition hall.
4. Coloured Lighting
Coloured Lighting is an excellent way to reinforce your brand identity or create an emotional connection with your visitors. By using your brand’s signature colors in your Booth Stand, you help visitors associate the booth with your company immediately. Whether you choose soft, warm hues for a relaxing atmosphere or cool, high-tech tones for a cutting-edge feel, colored lights can have a significant impact on the mood of your Expo Stand.
5. Overhead Lighting
Overhead Lighting serves as the main source of illumination in your Exhibition Stand, ensuring that the entire booth is well-lit. When positioned correctly, it can eliminate shadows and highlight your products, branding, and displays. In a Trade Show setting, Overhead Lighting is essential to create a clear and welcoming space for your visitors.
6. Interactive Lighting
Using Interactive Lighting can create a dynamic, engaging experience for your visitors. This type of lighting responds to actions such as movement, touch, or sound, making your booth feel alive and more engaging. If you want to create a memorable experience that encourages visitors to interact with your products or services, Interactive Lighting can be a game-changer in your Exhibition Stand design.
How to Use Lighting Effectively in Your Exhibition Stand
Using lighting strategically is key to making the most of your Exhibition Stand. Here are some tips on how to use lighting effectively:
1. Highlight Key Areas
Direct your lighting to areas you want to draw attention to, such as featured products, special promotions, or important branding elements. A well-lit product display will stand out and capture the attention of attendees, while Spotlights can be used to create focal points.
2. Layer Your Lighting
Rather than relying on a single source of light, layer your lighting to create depth and dimension. By combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, you can create a well-balanced environment in your Expo Stand. Layered lighting will ensure your booth is illuminated in a way that guides visitors naturally through the space.
3. Consider the Exhibition Space
Every exhibition space is different, so adapt your lighting to the environment. If the space is well-lit, consider using more subtle lighting like LED Strip Lighting or Backlit Graphics to avoid over-illumination. In darker venues, use more powerful lighting to ensure your booth stands out and remains visible.
4. Keep It On-Brand
Your lighting should reflect your brand’s image and tone. If your company is a high-tech brand, consider using cool, crisp lighting that communicates innovation. For brands with a more relaxed or natural feel, warm, soft lighting may be more appropriate. Align your Booth Stand lighting with your overall marketing strategy to reinforce your brand identity.
5. Avoid Overlighting
While lighting is important, too much can overwhelm your booth and distract from the products and displays you want to showcase. Avoid overlighting by focusing light on key areas and maintaining a balance that is both inviting and effective.
Final Thoughts
Lighting plays a crucial role in your Exhibition Stand Design. Whether you're using beMatrix modular systems or a custom-built booth, the right lighting can create a welcoming atmosphere, highlight key products, reinforce your brand, and engage visitors. From Spotlights and LED Strip Lighting to Interactive Lighting, there are numerous options to help you design a booth that stands out at your next Trade Show.
Investing in thoughtful lighting ensures your Expo Stand will capture the attention of visitors and leave a lasting impression.

The Modern Marvel: Exploring the Versatility of Porta Cabins
In the realm of modern architecture and construction, versatility, efficiency, and sustainability are becoming paramount. Among the many innovations rising to meet these demands, one solution stands out: the porta cabin. These compact, portable structures are transforming the landscape of construction, offering a myriad of benefits across various industries and applications.

A Glimpse into Porta Cabins
Porta cabins, also known as modular buildings or portable cabins, are prefabricated structures that can be easily transported and assembled at different locations. Originally conceived as temporary housing or office spaces, these cabins have evolved significantly, now finding application in diverse sectors including construction, education, healthcare, events, and even residential spaces.
The Advantages of Porta Cabins
1. Mobility and Flexibility:
Porta cabins are designed for mobility, making them ideal for temporary or remote projects. Whether it's a construction site office, a classroom in a rural area, or a temporary medical facility during emergencies, these cabins can be swiftly deployed and relocated as needed.
2. Cost-Effectiveness:
Compared to traditional construction methods, porta cabins offer significant cost savings. Their modular design reduces material wastage and labor costs, while their shorter construction time translates to lower overall expenses.
3. Customization Options:
Porta cabins are highly customizable, allowing for tailored solutions to meet specific requirements. From basic office setups to fully-equipped laboratories or classrooms, these structures can be customized with various amenities, furnishings, and layouts.
4. Sustainability:
In an era increasingly concerned with environmental impact, porta cabins offer a sustainable alternative to traditional construction. Their modular design promotes resource efficiency, and many manufacturers use eco-friendly materials and construction practices, reducing both carbon footprint and construction waste.
5. Rapid Deployment:
In emergency situations such as natural disasters or public health crises, the ability to quickly establish infrastructure is critical. Porta cabins provide a rapid solution, offering shelter, medical facilities, or administrative offices in a fraction of the time required for conventional construction.
Applications Across Industries
The versatility of porta cabins enables their use across a wide range of industries and settings:
Prefab Construction Sites: Portable offices, storage units, and restrooms for construction workers.
Prefabricated Education: Temporary classrooms, libraries, or administrative offices for schools and universities.
Prefabricated Healthcare: Emergency medical facilities, clinics, or vaccination centers.
Events: Ticket booths, vendor stalls, or temporary exhibition hall spaces.
Residential: Temporary housing solutions during renovations or for disaster relief efforts.
What is the life expectancy of a porta cabin?
The life expectancy of a porta cabin, also known as a portable cabin or portable office, can vary depending on several factors such as quality of construction, materials used, maintenance, and environmental conditions. Generally, a well-maintained porta cabin can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years or more. Regular maintenance, including inspections for structural integrity, roof leaks, and ensuring the integrity of the flooring, can help extend its lifespan. Additionally, factors such as exposure to extreme weather conditions, frequency of use, and quality of installation can also affect how long a porta cabin remains functional.
What is a porta cabin made of?
A porta cabin, also known as a portable cabin or modular building, is typically constructed using a variety of materials depending on its intended use, durability requirements, and budget constraints. However, the primary materials commonly used in porta cabin construction include:
Steel: Steel frames provide structural integrity and support for the cabin. They offer strength and durability, making the structure robust enough to withstand transportation and installation.
Wood: Wood is often used for the floors, walls, and sometimes even the roofs of porta cabins. It's relatively lightweight, readily available, and offers good insulation properties.
Insulation: To regulate temperature and improve energy efficiency, insulation materials such as fiberglass, foam board, or spray foam are used between the walls and ceilings.
Exterior Cladding: The exterior of porta cabins may be clad in materials such as corrugated steel panels, aluminum, vinyl siding, or fiberglass reinforced panels (FRP). These materials protect the cabin from the elements and enhance its aesthetic appeal.
Interior Finishes: Inside the porta cabin, materials like gypsum board (drywall) are commonly used for walls and ceilings. Flooring materials can vary and may include vinyl, laminate, carpet, or tiles.
Windows and Doors: Windows are typically made of glass, while doors can be made of steel, wood, or fiberglass, depending on security and insulation requirements.

NY / Ryan Patrick Krueger: Documents from the Closet

Courtesy of the Artist and Rivalry Projects, Buffalo, NY
Ryan Patrick Krueger: Documents from the Closet August 5 - September 10, 2023 Opening reception: August 5, 2023, 5-8pm
Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Documents from the Closet, a solo installation of work by Ryan Patrick Krueger, curated by Samantha Box. This exhibition marks Krueger’s New York City debut, and is accompanied by a curatorial text written by Mary Lee Hodgens, artist and former Assistant Director of Light Work, Syracuse.
Documents from the Closet
Mary Lee Hodgens For their ongoing project, Documents from the Closet, artist Ryan Patrick Krueger works with a personal collection of LGBTQ+ archives, vernacular photographs, and ephemera to tell a story about grief, loss, and courage. The artist weaves together two narratives, an unflinching effort to understand personal losses and identity through an exploration that begins in the historical oppression of gay men.
In the gallery, Krueger props seven-foot-tall pine boxes precariously against the walls, balanced atop piles of dirt or sand. In size and shape, the boxes feel reminiscent of monuments, gravestones, or coffins. Each box contains a history lesson: formally elegant collages of monochromatic black-and-white shapes that Krueger punctuates with flourishes of pink, red, and the bright yellow of shipping envelopes. Collage is about finding new meaning in the juxtaposition of disparate elements. For Krueger, this process of isolating, truncating, or layering visual information allows for dialogue with the past while telling their own newer story.
In 2011, Krueger began an eBay search using phrases such as “gay interest” and “vintage gay photograph” to hunt down photographs depicting what they describe as “tenderness, friendship, intimacy, and true love.” These photographs, including tintypes and photo booth portraits, show us men—now long gone—embracing or sometimes just mugging for the camera. Played out decades ago, these fleeting moments of connection and intimacy now feel furtive. Krueger allows us to see their process by including eBay receipts and the handwritten envelopes in which a network of other collectors of “gay interest” move and share these documents. We grieve these lives with the artist, who asks us to consider both the complexities of living a double life in pre-Stonewall America and our own human need for connection and community.
Krueger references many iconic gay artists, activists, and organizations here, including Act Up, David Deitcher, Essex Hemphill, Hal Fischer, Jonathan Ned Katz, Marlon Riggs, the Mattachine Society, and David Wojnarowicz. The artists also layers many symbols of the struggle over the documents, including a red tie, pink triangles, a locket containing the ashes of a childhood best friend, red boxing gloves, and clippings of classified ads from the pages of a defunct 1990’s LGBTQ+ newspaper.
What emerges is that Krueger’s embrace of LGBTQ+ American history allows them to stand on a timeline that faces forward. Although each box feels final and heavy with grief, there is also a sense of triumph. In acknowledging those who’ve gone before, Krueger transforms the boxes into protest banners. Furtiveness falls away, and in its place comes acceptance and yes, pride. As artist and AIDs activist David Wojnarowicz said, “To make the private into something public is an action that has terrific ramifications.”
Ryan Patrick Krueger holds a BFA in Photography from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, and was formerly Digital Services Coordinator for Light Work, a non-profit artist-run photography organization at Syracuse University. Krueger has curated exhibitions and held shows nationally including Documents from the Closet at the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY), On Longing at MONACO (St. Louis, MO), Response Response (with Linda Kliewer in Portland, OR), and Queer Moments: Selections from the Light Work Collection (Syracuse, NY). Most recently, Krueger exhibited work in the 2022 FotoFest Biennial, If I Had A Hammer, (Houston, TX), and appeared in Aperture, Art in America, and Sixty Inches From Center.
