since there's an impressionist royal portrait in the zeitgeist right now, do you wanna hear about one of my fav norwegian oil painters........ his name is håkon gullvåg and he's painted portraits of the norwegian king and queen and they look like this

which were pretty controversial at the time (the year 2000), but i was too baby to know anything about it!

i first heard of him when he was on the news for a completely different controversy around the years 2008/2009 - his exhibition titled 'the holy land'/'terra sancta' which was a series of paintings he had painted in a wild unstoppable rage over the injustices he had seen palestinians suffer. at one of the exhibitions in syra, two of the paintings got removed by the french embassy, and i think never returned to him? i'm finding it surprisingly difficult to hunt down the story without knowing exactly what to look for, but i did dig up this article. i was still a young teen at the time so i didn't know much about the context, but in recent times i've been thinking about these paintings a lot. i'll add the Controversial Paintings under the cut:

caught up on the us-canada fighting today. cry laughing at jt miller, 6'1, picking a fight with colton parayko who is clearly the biggest guy even from a birds eye view

and i guess he was worried that he doesnt have a date for his goonery plot with the tkachuks which is why he proceeds to cross-check him to get his attention (getting an extra minor penalty)

and we get this goofy as hell shit where his arms aren't long enough to actually get any good hits on parayko. such as this where right after falling once he tries for the face -> can't reach -> proceeds to fall in the other direction right afterwards

or this where for some unfathomable reason he's trying to uppercut him at almost parayko's full arms length -> obviously misses, there's no other way that could have possibly ended -> hits the front of his own helmet and knocks it off like its that fuckign jerma clip where he slaps himself in the face

and mind you he's picked a fight with colton parayko who has two career fights on hockey fights after this game and those two fights are this one and the one klim kostin picked with him last season where he did look like the better fighter for the first three punches and then klim ended the fight like this

which, mind you, is not a strategy that jt miller could have employed on account of the fact that I don't think his arms are long enough to reach his collar, let alone pull it over his head.

jt miller might as well just be shadowboxing for at LEAST 50% of this fight. incredible, no notes, 11/10, i would put this in a powerpoint presentation as number 1 on my top ten reasons we need to abolish fighting in hockey. wow

Hi!

Once again my stress of dealing with social media has made me neglect updates for a month, so!

Bit of a delay on the pansybeast pins since I needed to make some edits to the purple beastie but thankfully that's estimated to be in by the end of the month or very start of October. I would feel rather bad selling only two of the three considering how expensive shipping can be and don’t want to make people double dip into their money.

I also have some upcoming fall and winter exhibitions I’ve recently been invited to coming up so I’ve been working on that in the meantime!

Sorry for all the back and forth with the next opening, always seems to be something else to do that's important. Aiming to have the shop open again when the last of those pins are in!🤞

Next week: Spotlight on Conservation

Join us next Thursday, 19 September between 4-6p on the 6th floor of Hatcher for our first Third Thursdays at the Library event of the semester!

This event will feature recent conservation work on Special Collections materials.

The conservation department is responsible for the preservation of the library’s vast holdings of rare and special collection materials. The work they do includes preventive care activities, such as making protective boxes and enclosures for storage and constructing supports for items during exhibitions. They also perform treatments (the conservation term used to describe the repair process) on hundreds of items each year so the materials can be studied and appreciated by students, faculty, and other scholars.

Drop by for refreshments and a chance to chat with conservation colleagues who will be showcasing some of their recent projects, which include a variety of rare book treatments, housing projects that keep materials protected in storage, and figuring out how to care for oddities like a movie prop of a crying newborn baby.

PUBLIC COLLECTORS exhibition in Chicago!

Two days only: January 25-26. 12-5 PM.

On January 25-26, 2025, I will have a 2 day/10 hour Public Collectors exhibit at Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE), 1010 W 35th Street, Suite 697. For this show, titled Publication Survey / Life Savings, I will show most of the 90 Public Collectors publications I have made since 2007, and hundreds of other papers and publications from my collections. CAPE has over 40 tables, pedestals, and wood sawhorse tables in their beautiful space. I intend to fill all of them. 

This will also be an opportunity to purchase any Public Collectors publications that remain in print. Sales will partially benefit CAPE’s important educational work in Chicago public schools. I’ve been a teaching artist with them for over 10 years and I’m thrilled for this mutually supportive opportunity. I promise you that the exhibit will be visually immersive, so carve out some time and don’t miss it. 

I hope to repeat this model of exhibition / publication retrospective / and pop-up store in other places and spaces. My hope is to take this approach on the road (even if it’s just to another space on another end of this city) and create more short concentrated activations of my many publications and collections. Today is the on-stage speech by the director and the cast of the movie at Shinjuku Wald 9. There is a costume and standee panel exhibit out the front which will be around until Jan. 30th 2025.

Renni's attack on the memorial ceremony didn't need to be a part of some larger plot orchestrated by Ambessa. One of the reoccurring ideas in season 1 was that Piltover constantly underestimated and dehumanized their counterparts in Zaun. It was so second nature to the Piltovan cast that they couldn't see the direct line of their actions and consequences that lead to their situation.

Renni's attack is just another one of those consequences, because Jayce killed her son, didn't try to save him, walked away from his body, and didn't even offer Renni an apology. Of course Renni was going to try to kill him, she's a dangerous chembaron who's lost her factory and her child. It's genuinely insane to think no one thought this was a possibility, but it perfectly tracks with Piltover. The Piltovan cast constantly centers their own feelings and perspectives over their counterparts in Zaun.

"How could they do this at a memoria?!?", because Zaunites like Renni are grieving too. Her son didn't get any dignity when he died (and neither did Silco), so why should Piltover? Throwing Ambessa in as the secret puppet master just flattens the whole conflict because suddenly this natural progression in hostilities and critical failures in understanding are sidestepped by an outside party.
