Emily Jazmin Tatum Perez In July 2001, after graduating from #highschool, Perez entered the #unitedstatesmilitaryacademywestpoint . There she was an #exemplarystudent & talented #trackathlete , becoming the #highestranking #africanamerican #femalecadet in the history of #westpoint - Cadet CSM . Following graduation from West Point in 2005, she was commissioned a #secondlieutenant in the 204th Support Battalion, #2ndbrigade #4thinfantrydivision of the #unitedstatesarmy . Perez was #killedinaction on September 12, 2006, while leading a convoy through #alkifl , #iraq , a mission for which she had volunteered. She was the first female African-American officer in US military history to die in combat.
