That's a pretty common inscription on these grim things. Here's another:

I've posted about them several times - #richtschwert - and in years past I've handled two real ones.

Their lack of point makes their function plain - cut, not thrust - and the way-forward balance of the blade confirms it.

They're creepy and IMO are tools rather than weapons, not intended for combat, just a (hopefully) single cut at a (hopefully) stationary target.

Some of them were inscribed with that, too.

...occasionally along with a little menu of reminders that there are worse ways to go than a single cut.

Han Rasputin, better known as the Cruel Man, is a dangerous and unpredictable character. If you’re unfortunate enough to cross paths with him, the best you can hope for is that he’s not here for you.

His choice of weapons are a bit strange — with one hand, he wields a heavy executioner’s sword (a typically two-handed weapon), antique and visibly aged, a swing from which will easily separate limb from body; with the other, he wields an improvised replica of an Aztec macuahuitl, made from a cricket bat and shards of wine bottles.

on a completely separate note; shizun luo binghe with a disciple shen yuan who fell into the abyss??? *thinks about LBH canonically stealing SQQ's corpse for 5 years* he'd hallucinate i think. like, like visual and audial hallucinations.

Keeps thinking he's seeing SQQ in the corner of his eyes, or wandering between the trees, amongst a group of disciples. Thinks he hears him calling for him, but its just the wind or another disciple.

Gets Xiu Ya reforged but patently fucking refuses to make a sword mound. Because his disciple Is Not Dead :))) There was No Body. He's Not Dead. And If You keep Insisting That He Is, He's Gonna Skewer You :). He's holding onto Xiu Ya so he can return his most favored disciple's sword when he returns. It's on his hip right next to Zheng Yang where it's supposed to be.

Also this motherfucker?? does not sleep btw. He has the image of SQQ, wide eyed and hysterical and standing at the mouth of the abyss burned into his fucking eyelids. Can't use the dreamscape to escape it either because he keeps trying to save him and either he does and it's an incredibly cruel trick to wake up to, or he doesn't and he gets his heart broken in several different pieces again.

There is no convincing this man that Shen Qingqiu is dead. Absolutely nothing at all. He is buried so deep in denial that moles would be jealous of how deep he is. He keeps making tea for two in the bamboo house only to remember that it's just him. SQQ's fans are hiding everywhere, little reminders of his presence. He goes to wake up SQQ on the mornings he sleeps in-- only to find the room empty.

The way that stretch goals work on kickstarter is that as a project makes more money, there are opportunities for the project to level up a bit at no additional cost to the backers/customers. Two of our stretch goals for A DREAM OF SWORDS include traveling to more museums to do an additional twenty-five pieces for the book; we've hit both of those goals, so I went up to the Cleveland Museum of Art to do ten of them. He's the first of that batch! (Next stop: Vienna!)

I do the initial sketches on site digitally, so that I can move and rescale things to fit the format and make sure I *understand* what I'm drawing - easier to do looking at a piece and being able to move your POV around than it is working from a photo - and then I take reference photos. I do the finished inking and painting at my desk at home, where I have a little more control than I do trying to work on a bench in a sometimes-crowded museum.

The sword of the day is the executioner’s sword.

This sword, as the name implies, was not designed for combat. It was entirely used for the purpose of decapitating convicted criminals. Used in the 17th and early 18th centuries, they have a few defining features. Most obviously, they lack a point, since they are not intended to ever be used for thrusting. The blades are often very broad to give them additional chopping power, and said blade is often, but not always, etched with intricate designs and meaningful inscriptions. It was seen as preferable to the axe, due to the differing positions the executed prisoner would be in; an axe forced them to place their head on the chopping block, while the sword allowed them to die with their head upright (if still kneeling). Even after falling out of actual use, the executioner’s sword remained a symbol of judicial power and authority.
