Below is Spoilers, including details breakdown of the story’s meta. Bewarned! This is long & convoluted as all get out. It basically can be summed up like this:

Martin and other future people (not just events) have actually been mentioned more than that, and to answer your question right off of the bat, yes Jon will continue to remember.

As I was originally answering this, it kind of spiraled out of control as I dove into a detailed breakdown of some things so I decided to just go for the whole hog and put everything down here in one place. I’ve got a similar breakdown in another document, but that’s really just for keeping tabs on how many days have passed and not the meta analysis.

TL;DR on meta: Jon is leveling up at a ridiculous speed, but he already was high level to start out with so he’s really just lagging behind his adult self. The more he feeds the more he grows. In the Eyepocalypse, we’ve heard Jon lament that trying to access his powers within his body is like trying to “drink the ocean through a straw”, and it’s only gotten more difficult as his body has shrunk.

Another note on timing: in the original story, Jon had gained multiple marks in back to back horrible days. In my own small way, the pacing of these later chapters is repayment for Jon’s hell week.

Entity Touched events will be in bold. Jon’s powers being activated will be italicized. Remembering a specific person/statement/future event will be noted with (parenthesis). Please note that while I will put a specific name in the parenthesis Jon often does not consciously remember the name nor the full scope of the event/person/statement. I will keep a running total of how many days since the last notable entity touched event at the top.

Ch 1

Jon goes through the Spiral’s Doors. His body merges, and he fluctuates between seeing and Seeing. Eventually, his eyes settle upon Watching constantly. He struggles to remember Section 31 (Daisy and Basira “they were both strangers and enemies and friends��). He Knows Detective Davies exact schedule, and the train schedule. He attempts to Feed via Compelling, unsuccessfully. He Sees Detective Davies schedule change. He Senses stories nearby.

Ch 2

Day 3 post-emerging:

After reading a Story: he Knows the difference between true and fake statements, as well as Mr. Magnus’s true name and that he stole the name Elias. He can See farther than what his eyes should be able to, and is able to Watch Elias. He Compels Elias but does not stay long enough to feed off his answers. He remembers (Barnabas Bennett). He remembers (the feeling of his own rib.) He remembers (going into the Lonely to save someone). When pressed, he remembers (the Unknowing exploding into fire) and losing “them” (his Assistants). This causes him to vomit and creates a void within him that must be filled.

Jon summons tape recorders to listen to stories. He listens to dozens of Stories at the same time. Jon remembers (the layout of the Institute). Jon gives a Statement.

Ch 4

Day 3 post-emerging, hours after consuming dozens of Stories:

Jon remembers (the Dark Sun, and Looking directly at the Entities). Jon remembers (Michael stabbing him for Compelling).

Ch 5

One day after consuming dozens of Stories:

Jon reads a bedtime Story. This reveals to Elias that Jon is able to comprehend all languages.

Ch 6

Jon consumes multiple Stories per day, far exceeding the normal Archivist rate of consumption. He remembers (Elias unable to See him in Orsinov’s Circus) He is unable to lie. He walks through the Archivist nightmares and the nightmares of the Eyepocalpyse, but these future events are unable to be perceived by Elias. During these nightmares, he remembers (being hurt by several “monsters”.)

Post this chapter, assume Jon has read at least one bedtime Story and multiple Stories throughout the day for months.

Ch 7

Jon now Knows all answers to fact-based questions his teachers ask. He begins drawing Eyes that have some will of their own- refusing to be paired. Jon now speaks directly to the Eye. It is confirmed his eyes have now physically changed to be reminiscent of other Avatars of the Eye- ie Elias. Jon Sees all marks left on people by the Entities. He remembers (how the Entities make Avatars), (Simon Fairchild) and (that he did something very bad unwillingly). He can sense when Elias is trying to See into his head.

Ch 8

Jon Feeds off of Emma, and forces her to Know her victim’s pain. Everyone is unable to move or interrupt him. He forces the web of the Mother of Puppets to be Shown. He remembers (where the tunnels are and what they do).

Ch 9

One day after Feeding off of Emma

Jon grows bigger. Jon Knows the (true nature of the Entities, and their effects on the world) and tries to articulate them. His explanation is different than Gertrude’s. He remembers (Tim’s jokes, Martin’s love of fuzzy tarantulas, the fight with Peter, and Michael-as-the-Distortion’s Statement, being friends with his Assistants and that things went wrong when his Assistants were no longer his friends). He thinks, but is not sure, he remembers who the man in the tunnels is (Lietner) and that he can track him down. He can See everyone’s marks and make them visible to others. When attempting to consciously access Knowledge of Michael’s future, he faints and blood comes out of his nose.

Jon consumes a Story. Jon remembers (how to Quit). Jon fights with the Eye’s geas against speaking of escape and wins.

Jon remembers (the Eyepocalypse) and Knows why he can survive on only old stories and statements from Avatars. Reaching for this knowledge is even more difficult than just Michael’s future, and causes him to black out for a significant amount of time with a severe memory wipe. Despite this memory wipe, he remembers (Gertrude does not treat her Assistants well, and the location of Fiona & Joshua Gillespie’s statement).

Ch 10

Jon Knows how to get to the Coffin purely thanks to the Eye, and realizes the Knowledge is external because his sense of direction was previously so poor. He is now able to consciously communicate directly in a back and forth conversation with the Eye, although the Eye is currently only Answering Jon’s Questions and Jon is giving his opinion. Being near the Coffin causes Jon to remember (he was in the Coffin for 3 days).

Being in the Coffin causes Jon to remember (that he got stuck with someone else last time, that he had an anchor, and that it might be M-m-mar- ), then he gets out in a day and a half. This is half the time of the first round, despite Fiona being deeper in than Daisy had been.

Ch 11

Day 1 post-Coffin & Feeding off of John

Jon feeds off of Dr. Girard the pediatrician.

Jon still comprehends all languages, but now he can articulate something is strange despite still not realizing he’s not hearing English. Jon grows after feeding. Jon Knows when Fiona is in trouble. His eyesight is noticeably excellent. Jon remembers (Gertrude’s war against the rituals is “stupid”, and that Jonah stole Elias’s body and why. He remembers statements about Agnes, and how Agnes and Gertrude are bound, and what various members of the Cult of the Lightless Flame look like. He also remembers going out for Martin’s birthday and eating ice cream, which is how he knows where the nearest ice cream parlor is.)

This is the last time Jon takes out the crayon drawing of the Eye.

Ch 12

Day 2 post-Coffin & Feeding off of John, Day 1 post Feeding off of Dr. Girard

Jon remembers (you should never hold an Avatar of the Desolation barehanded, and that the tunnels go for miles and miles, and that Smirke realized his architectural theories were wrong.)

Jon Knows he loves tea but hasn’t found one that tastes right. (He’s thinking of Martin’s tea, but he doesn’t realize it.) It’s also revealed that Jon is crying alone sometimes in his room when he thinks no one will notice, but he doesn’t Remember why. When asked, he remembers (he was Made and not Born), and Knows that the Eyepocalypse/”his destiny” is preventable, but he had to lay down before remembering/realizing any further.

He remembered the (statement about Agnes’s childhood, and the Distortion’s Avatars, despite the fact the Distortion would not merge like that until post-ritual, and that Gertrude liked to blow things up/use fire to disrupt rituals.)

The Eye now is giving Jon specific suggestions, ie origami frogs, when he Asked for ideas.

Ch 13

Day 3 post-Coffin & Feeding off of John, Day 2 post Feeding off of Dr. Girard

When asked, he knows there’s no such thing as time where the Eye is, but vomits from trying to Know something directly about where the Fears currently are. Jon remains nauseous but does not faint, have blood loss, or memory loss. Then, when a Story is read to him from Van Closen, he remembers (the contents of a different statement entirely- Fanshaw’s letter.) He struggles to grasp something else the Eye is telling him.

Ch 14

Day 4 post-Coffin & Feeding off of John, Day 3 post Feeding off of Dr. Girard.

Jon remembers (being a manager.) Elias and Fiona do not realize Jon is using terms no one has used around him before- nor do they recognize like Michael did earlier that Jon’s specific grasp of corporate language is far outside the normal range of what children usually have picked up.

Fiona, newly awakened, uses her powers on Jon. He then, when in close proximity to her, is reminded of what information he hadn’t been able to grasp earlier (ie, Eric and Gerry).

Jon enters a battlefield surrounded by Entity-touched deathtraps being sprung. He remembers (wandering untouched in the Eyepocalypse, Mary binding herself to the book.)

Ch 15

Day 4 post-Coffin & Feeding off of John, Day 3 post Feeding off of Dr. Girard.

Jon (remembers “interrupting drinks” and that they always taste better when in a mug- ie, Martin’s tea. He remembers the Dark was “for babies”.)

When awoken, he is able to articulate that he did remember Gerry and Eric.

Jon summons Eric. The Archive speaks. Jon Knows how to edit the Book as Mary Keay did in the original timeline, and does so.

The Leithian Reread - Canto I

I’ve decided to reread Tolkien’s poetic rendition of the Leithian and comment on it, because it’s gorgeous and probably my favourite part of Tolkien’s writings outside of the Silm, LOTR, and The Hobbit. Actually, I think it beats The Hobbit.

A very entertaining addition to the Lay of Leithian is CS Lewis’ commentary, which is written not in the style of comments on a friend’s work, but in the style of a critical-literary analysis of an ancient text. So when Lewis thinks something is great, he doesn’t say “This is great!” he says “Critics regard this as one of the finest parts of the poem,” and when he think it’s bad, he doesn’t say it’s bad, he says “This is clearly an adulteration of/later addition to the original text, as evidenced by [stylistic differences].” It’s delightful fun to read, and really brings to life the kind of friendship these guys had, their academic nerdiness and senses of humour.

I love the entirety of this canto. The cadence and rhyme and evocative language are all splendid. It’s a departure from Tolkien’s more common use of primarily-alliterative poetry (as in the poetic Narn i Hîn Húrin, the fragment of the “The Flight of the Noldor from Valinor”, and the Rohirric poetry of The Lord of the Rings), but he still makes excellent use of alliteration in many places (e.g., Men...mould and glen...glade, below). I like the change of style - the Rohirric style suits Mannish poetry well, but feels jarring to me when it’s used for Elven works such as “The Flight of the Noldor from Valinor”. (I would far rather have had the Noldolantë in a similar style to the Leithian.)

It’s a great start, and the quality stays excellent throughout. CS Lewis’ only critique is of one use of internal rhyme (“in many a tall and torchlit hall”) and he’s very admiring of the canto as a whole. He’s particularly partial to the description of Lúthien, saying “[the passage] has been too often and too justly praised to encourage the mere commentator in intruding”. While it’s a good passage, I personally am more interested in what Lúthien does than how she looks. (A very early version, criticized by Lewis for its style and wording, had Lúthien as blond, before Tolkien changed her to dark-haired.) My favourite passage in the canto is the description of Beleriand (e.g., to East in peaks of blue were piled / in silence folded, mist-enfurled / the mountains of the Outer World).

Lewis also highly praises two particular lines of which he says, “The reader who wishes to acquire a touchstone for the true style of the Geste had better learn by heart this faultless and characteristic diptych”:

and sharp his sword and high his helm

the king of beech and oak and elm.

The whole poem is iambic tetrameter (8 syllables per line, accent on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th syllables). Tolkien’s extremely fond of paired ideas in a line, like “and sharp his sword and high his helm” or “with shining bit and silver rein” (both of which use alliteration, but in different pattern); more rarely, he groups three ideas (with horse, or horn, or mortal feet). I think this also comes from his usual Rohirric style; but the metre and rhyme give it an entirely different feel that I think evokes Elvishness very effectively. But this metre’s not only used in his Elvish poetry - it’s also the same style used in Gimli’s song of Khazad-dûm in The Fellowship of the Ring (The world was young, the mountains green/no stain yet on the moon was seen...)

And in fact Tolkien reuses an exact passage from Gimli’s song in the Leithian (or vice versa, depending on when they were written):

There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,

and metal wrought like fishes’ mail

buckler and corslet, axe and sword,

and gleaming spears were laid in hoard

From which we can conclude that 1) Tolkien was especially pleased with this passage and 2) Sindar and dwarves, for all their later conflict, aren’t so different.

In terms of plot and character, about all we have in this canto is the comparison/parallelism of Lúthien with Thingol’s material treasures, which is in line with his later treatment of her in the story.

rolled over far Beleriand

until a day beneath the sun

when many marvels were begun.

First Innings as IG @ Deolali ( Aug 1977 to May 1980 )

On completion of LGSC, we were sanctioned casual leave for one week, during which I shifted to my new accommodation in the IG Block in the premises of B Mess. I availed the well deserved break at Aurangabad & assisted my parents in shifting from Army house to a civil rented house, since my father had retired recently after 35 years of service. On return to Deolali, I was selected to be in the IG Team for teaching the new Course, LGSC Fd 778, which had just reported. It was a privilege to be given this responsibility which was a tough challenge in view of the expectations.

It was an unforgettable moment, when I gave my first lecture, to my first batch of students, as they recorded their first impressions about me. As the Basic Leg progressed, I realised the magnitude of the task of teaching three most difficult subjects ( Ballistics, Equipment & Ammunition ) in the easiest possible manner. It was achieved only after extensive study and preparation of lesson plans & OHP slides, on every week end. The often quoted statement ---” You learn only when you teach” was indeed true. It was equally exciting to set and correct Exam papers and evaluate the Teaching Practices of students. On the whole, it was an exhilarating feeling of repeating the Basic Leg, in the new role as an IG , wearing the prestigious Red Band !!

Simultaneously, all the Instructional staff had to qualify in the BPET ( Battle Physical Efficiency Tests ) and PPT ( Physical Proficiency Tests ) during the Annual Adm Inspection. The thrust towards” Fitness First” was emphasised by holding Volleyball & Basketball competitions as well as encouraging individual sports. These activities contributed towards physical fitness as well as team bonding. It would showcase the capabilities of all weapon systems in the Regiment of Artillery besides surveillance assets & the Air OP capabilities. We rehearsed for one week with the participation of all the Guns/ Mortars/ Rocket Launchers held by the Units of Deolali & Nasik. The deployment of 120 mm Mortar using the Mules was very impressive. In addition, the Cheetah helicopter of Air OP Squadron displayed its capability of ferrying the 120 mm Mortar as an underslung load. It was a thrilling experience to apply our knowledge and skills towards enhancing the accuracy and consistency of fire support of a variety of weapons.

There was a rehearsal which was attended by all Courses at School of Artillery, all recruits of Artillery Centre, Nasik & the civil population of Deolali Cantonment. The final event was on the Army Day ( 15 Jan 1978 ). It was witnessed by the Officers attending the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, who were on their educational tour to all training establishments. It was a spectacular display of fire power which ended with a salvo fired by a total of 70 Guns/ Mortars/ Rockets, destroying all the targets on Bahula ridgeline. The grand finale was the salvo by GRAD BM 21 MBRL, when each launcher fired 40 rockets in 20 seconds. It was indeed a dazzling display which reinforced the statement ----” Artillery is the God of War”, as propounded by Joseph Stalin.

In Apr 78, there was a change of command in the Field Wing.Col T P Singh took over as the Chief Instructor and was well known for his professional acumen. All instructors looked forward to the opportunity to seek his guidance for solving any difficulty. He adopted a strategy of paying surprise visits to all the training areas and the Course Shootings. These gave a boost to the standard of training besides motivating all the instructors & the students to attain greater proficiency. I was lucky to be nominated by him to be part of the Study Group of six IsG, for an analysis of the combat potential of our Artillery vis-a-vis Pakistan & China. The entire Study Group had to slog for the next one week and give him a Presentation , which as expected, had to be refined, since Col T P Singh contributed his expert suggestions. Really, I learnt so much as a result of this first direct professional interaction with this erudite Gunner.

In Oct 78, myself with two AIsG proceeded to Binnaguri for assessment of practice camps of all the Regiments of Artillery Brigade. It was so exciting to be back to meet the Jat Balwans again, while Lt Col M S Choudhary had taken over as the TIGER 98. We moved to Buxaduar Ranges and assessed the performance of all the Regiments as per the parameters laid down by the School of Artillery. It was a unique privilege for me to assess my own Unit, while wearing the prestigious” Red Band” outside Deolali, for the first time. I observed that the professional standards had distinctly improved in the last two years, due to the dedication by the Jat Balwans, under a new Team of officers& JCOs, guided by an ebullient CO. I was given an emotional gift at the Unit Mandir and presented the holy Bhagvad Gita, wishing me further success & glory while performing my duty. The philosophy “ Karmanye vadhikaraste, ma phaleshu kadachan” has always been my beacon of strength, ever since I wore the Olive Green uniform!!

I was sent on one month annual leave in Nov, which was in accordance with the leave plan, an important facet of man management while ensuring the training commitments. On return, I was detailed in the IG Team for the next Course ---- LGSC Fd 809. It meant hard work once again but the appreciation by the students always encouraged me to put in that extra effort. I accepted it as an opportunity to constantly improve as a Teacher since teaching and learning have a symbiotic relationship. Simultaneously, I volunteered to be in the IG Team for Ex TOPCHI which was in the last week of Jan 1979. We suggested that battlefield illumination could be shown as a separate part in the night, just after the standard fire power demonstration during day time. The proposal was approved by the Commandant and we started the rehearsals at night as well. The overall impact on the Final Day was phenomenal, not only as a result of an excellent demo during day time but also an amazing demo of illumination of Deolali Ranges by night, on the eve of the Republic Day. It proved to be a novel idea and the meticulous display of fire power, specially the salvo by GRAD BM 21 MBRL ( 40 rockets in 20 seconds ) convinced the spectators of Defence Services Staff College that” Power grows out of the barrel of a Gun”. Our parents also gave their concurrence & we were thrilled after the customary Engagement Ceremony within two days. It was also finalised that the marriage would be conducted in Dadar ( date, time & venue to be confirmed later). Both of us were on Cloud Nine, as we departed for Deolali & Dadar respectively, while I looked forward to meeting Sanjivani at Dadar on each of the weekends. I reached Deolali bubbling with the “Breaking News”.

Soon the muhurat for the wedding was finalised as 9.57 AM on 26 Jun 1979. Obviously, there was shortage of time for all the preparations by both the families. I applied for 45 days annual leave ( keeping the remaining 15 days as reserve for Diwali festival ). My leave was sanctioned, as requested, for the most important event in my life. The waiting period upto the auspicious day was spent in a state of stargazing by both of us. Finally, the marriage was solemnised after traditional rituals on 26 Jun 1979. The most emotional moment was the “Saptapadi” ritual when we sought the blessings of the Almighty by taking the traditional vows.

We returned to Deolali, with all the bag & baggage, as a young couple for the first time. My friends, who were also young couples, organised a grand welcome for us, into the Home of the Gunners. Initially, we stayed in the Guest Room in B Mess itself but shifted to our temporary accommodation in 48 OG Lines, within three days. Thus began the process of converting our House into a Home!! At this juncture, I feel that Sanjivani should narrate her impressions as she stepped into the Fauji environment.

Musings as a Fauji bride - “DADAR to DEOLALI”

Every girl thinks about the person she will marry and the family she will belong to. I had the same feelings. I vividly remember that when I was 19 years of age, my Mama got married to a girl from the Fauji family.During this wedding, I observed lot of Army officers in their special uniform for the first time. They looked very courteous and smart. I was thoroughly impressed with the grandeur of the Army. I was a complete civilian and thought to myself about the special quality of life of a Fauji family. Later, my parents asked me if I had any particular choice for marriage. I told them that if possible, I would like to marry an Army officer ( not knowing the realty of being a Fauji wife, it has several pros & cons ).

I was very lucky that the first proposal itself was from Capt Vivek Toley, who was the most eligible bachelor in Deolali. As marriages are made in heaven, before I could realise, we were married. Thus began my roller coaster ride from Dadar to Deolali. It was going to be a 360 degree transformation from the life I was leading till then. I was astonished when I saw a black steel trunk marked with the name of Capt Toley. The journey from suitcases to trunks thus began. My mother in law had packed few utensils and other necessities for us before we moved to Deolali. I started my Fauji life in 48 OG Lines, which was temporary accommodation for married officers.

I belonged to a typical Maharashtrian family & was conversant only in Marathi. My neighbours were from different parts of India. So, I had to make do somehow with my Bambaiya Hindi. Still, i learnt a lot from these conversations.My urge to talk in Marathi was fulfilled by talking to the local vendors and the maids. Social adjustment was another big challenge for which I was not prepared at all. I remained generally shy and silent while interacting with the officers & their wives. Huge cultural differences made me feel out of place. However, my Fauji family went out of their way to make me comfortable. I must mention that my husband stood beside me like a strong pillar , taught me, guided me and encouraged me at every moment.

It is a norm in any Army station to be on the waiting list for allotment of temporary/ permanent accommodation. In Deolali,we shifted into 10 houses in 10 months. It is a common practice in Deolali to shift into the house of any officer going on leave for a month or two. This was so difficult for me to digest.Thanks to the Regimental association & NDA Coursemates, we were always given the house for use on “as is, where is basis”. This was a great show of faith and trust. My heartfelt thanks to all of them for making us so comfortable in the very first year of our married life. It assured me that the Armed Forces constitute a big family, with each one playing a small role.

Finally, we were allotted our permanent accommodation in P4 Block in Depot Battery Road colony. We moved into our own home and settled down fully. I was really happy but was surprised when my husband informed me about receipt of his posting order to NDA, Khadakwasla. Our first year in Deolali will always have a special place in our album of memories!!

Consequent to settling down in my new status, I reverted to my duties as part of the IG Team for LGSC Course Fd 810, for the third time, thus completing a hat -trick. In Jan 1980, I was fortunate to complete another hat- trick with the responsibility of Ex TOPCHI , which was again a dazzling display of fire power. Thereafter, I was deputed to the Faculty of Studies where I learnt about the latest developments & trials of new weapon systems including ammunition. It involved regular interaction with the Trials Wing. In the first week of May, I was pleasantly surprised with the receipt of my posting order to the prestigious National Defence Academy. The resultant ecstasy of being selected as an Instructor at NDA from where I had passed out exactly 10 years ago, was the pinnacle of my professional achievements so far. I looked forward to moving within a month from the” Home of the Gunners” to the” Cradle of Leadership” --- along with my life partner!!

CRUFTS 2020 Malamutes

Okay so there is SOME video taken by a spectator of the Crufts Malamutes, but the angle is not good for analysis so I’m going to use existing photos.

Before I start I will say, typically the dogs presented at Crufts are a lot more close to my own dogs than the ones at Westminsters because my breeder uses a lot of overseas bloodlines outside of North America so I tend to prefer them overall and the dogs tend to be more relate to my own.

There was an absolutely MASSIVE entry so I’m just highlighting specific winners here. (well over 100 dogs entered just in Malamutes)

The dog that won Best of Breed is just *chefs kiss* beautiful and he also won the Dog Challenge.

Here he is, “ITJCH Black Star Del Biagio”

A well muscled seal colored male with beautiful SHORT coat, head type, big feet, moderate bone, really beautiful angulation and length of leg and oh my oh my that shoulder/chest angle is to die for. This dog also participates in work, but since he resides in the warmer part of Italy it’s more moderate work. Either way he is kept in lovely shape. There are photos on one of his owners facebook pages doing sled work with other malamutes, but not this particular dog. It is really nice to see a dog that is not gray/white in the show ring!

Best Puppy: “Cahppes Never Ending Love”

I will say that I was SO excited to see Kitana win Best Puppy! Kitana is from Kennel Cahppes in Sweden, owned by an friend of mine in Scotland and is related to Sigurd & Zombie (the BOB dog is as well...but more distantly).

Not the clearest photo, dog is on a slight angle and she is holding herself a little awkwardly here, but a beautiful feminine head, still developing in the chest and proportions (but notice that her chest although not yet mature still has great angulation of the chest/shoulder layback, better than some mature dogs I’ve noted in the show ring here in the US), nice length of coat (carrier I believe, but not overly feathered), great angulation, great proportion of bone. Excited to see her mature!

Her parents are BIS C.I.B SE FIN DK UCH Nord W-11 Nord W-19 Nord WW-19 SE W-13 SE W- 15 White Fang Iditarod “Fang” x SE UCH Cheya's Coming Home For Christmas “Chrissy” so she has a really great balance of show/work in her pedigree. Cahppes really knows how to breed a working dog.

A thickly boned sable colored male with excellent coat length, nice masculine head, feet look a little proportionally small for my liking, and the shoulder is nice, but straighter than i prefer. Very substantial guy who is quite balanced. He is much more of the American Show Type body and head type than the Crufts Winner imo, just a thicker shorter dog. This particular dog’s breeder does some great work promoting the Malamute as a working dog!

Also just interjecting here but this dog’s headshot is so nice ~handsome~

This bitch is LOVELY, looks to be of a feminine size with a really beautiful tail and short coat. Her front chest/shoulder assembly is wonderful! Back legs look overstretched in this photo giving the illusion of poorer angulation than she actually has. Nicely muscled because this dog WORKS y’all.

*Also this breeder puts their dog’s Star Signs and Sun/Moon rising in their dogs profiles on their website along with their health testing so that’s cute af.

Best Vetran “CH HAWKEYE POLARNI USVIT WPD WPDA WPDX WTD AWPD C * B * S * G * P* AWTD C* B * BP* S* SP * G * P* WMOYA TOP WORKING DOG 2013/14(IMP CZE)

This dog is from the same breeder as the reserve bitch above! He is a hard worker to say the least judging from his titles! Again could not find a quality angle from Crufts, but here is a recent stacked photo:

A well muscled and well proportioned male with a nice masculine head. He has a really nice short coat that is still correct and plush. A moderate shoulder/chest angle and his rear angulation is just lovely. Really well put together guy in excellent shape!

So that concludes some of the Crufts Malamutes! Please note that I am not an expert by any means but I am VERY happy with the Crufts showing and results. So many of these dogs do breed appropriate work, an overwhelming amount of them in fact! This is a big difference from Westminster where I was struggling to find ANY dog that had ANY work they did at all. In comparison I also find the Crufts dogs have less dramatic coats (likely a result of the breeders doing work and knowing the functionality of correct coats). They are also in better overall shape and have nicer muscle development. Watching the videos there was also some nice color variation! I saw a lot of grey & white per usual but also red & white, seal & white and sable & white!

As for Jaehyun, he’s basically an ordinary university student, one that aced his classes and studied in the library until sundown. He wears T-shirts and hoodies for almost every day, sometimes include pieces of varsity jackets and beanie when the weather gets colder. No sleek designs and bold graphics but washed out or near neutral colours that lack strong chromatic content. The only thing that separates him from the others, is his fine looks that’s perfection itself—you can’t argue with that, it’s the truth.

Frat parties or whatever celebrations inclusive of alcohol and explicit music, you never missed out any of them, having fun with your circle of friends like you should till the sun comes up albeit having lectures to attend the next morning. Jaehyun drops his pen on a book you didn’t realize he’s been multitasking on, and you watch as he cracks his knuckles, twisting his neck and popping sounds erupt at the quick motions. “We can call it a day if you’re tired.”

“No, no. It’s alright.” You rise from your chair and round the table to take the seat beside him. He turns his head questioningly.

“I am going to stare at you and admire your beautiful face until you kiss me and tell me how annoying I am,” you wish you could tell him so.

“Just so I couldn’t look at your face,” you reasoned but you both knew that it doesn’t make sense. Maybe. The distance made it difficult for you to gawk at him without being caught.

The session carried forward for another half an hour with him getting his research done for a particular assignment, and you being told to read through his notes as well as completing the example questions provided by your lecturer.

He was so indulged with his own work that he didn’t realize you’ve went abnormally quiet. That was until he felt a weight on him—your head leaning against his arm as you nod off from the combination of soothing silence and cold air. “Okay.” He sighs, exhaling the breath he hasn’t realize he’d been holding. He knew you’ll always end up getting what you want, winning the nonexistent fights.

“Thank you,” your face lit up with impish glee, transmitting the positive energy to his features and he mirrors your reaction. You’re his happiness.

You have never been so excited about Fridays, the thought of meeting your friends again and a quality party sparks your nerves. More specifically, Jaehyun’s presence will be the cherry on top.

Stepping foot into the mansion, the sight of bodies in carefully picked outfits, dim yellow lightings and music of dirty and invasive lyrics had a satisfied smile tugging up the corners of your mouth. It feels like home.

“Y/N! I thought you wouldn’t come,” your friend perks up when he spots you at the entrance. Immediately pulling you into a friendly hug and steals a peck on your cheeks.

“When did I ever turn you down,” the smile never left your face.

“You don’t say.” He rolls his eyes. Nonetheless, he’s more than happy for this reunion after you’ve gone missing from the crew for a whole month. “You look so beautiful tonight. I know you knew that.”

“Oh, and who’s this?” He turns to your partner, not missing the chance to throw you a sly grin.

“Jaehyun, this is Ten.” You introduce. “He’s the owner,” you added but your friend is quick to butt in. “Shush! It’s my pleasure to meet you,” he continues on with saying things like ‘her friends are my friends, my friends are your friends too’. You can’t help but fake a gag at the cheesy line, shooing him off otherwise the three of you are just going to stand at the foyer for the whole night.

Once your friend has gone out of sight, you make a beeline to the bar with Jaehyun trailing behind, him checking out the huge place and feeling the atmosphere at the same time. It was his first.

You got yourself a shot of fine whiskey and tequila for him. “Try?” He hardly drinks but he’s willing to take a sip. Just for tonight.

You watch him from the rim of your glass and laugh silently as his eyes grow the size of saucers from the feeling of burn in his throat. Before he can push away the glass, you encourage him to down the shot and brought him to the other side of the room, where people are gathered around the long table for games of beer pong. You didn’t fail to impress him when you won, your opponent fueling the little celebration by offering you to swallow shots and shots of vodka and you comply. Usually you could take in a good amount of the alcohol, having high tolerance. Anyway, it took you by surprise that you’re a little tipsy by now—not even an hour since you arrived.

After going few rounds of drinking games with your friends and some unfamiliar faces, you’re pretty sure that you’re gonna get some painful headaches the next day.

Red light flashes across but you put that warning signal in the back of your mind. You’re already intoxicated, so another glass wouldn’t make much difference. You return to the bar and get your glass filled before dragging Jaehyun to the dance floor—it’s just a large open space featuring LED lighting systems and where the DJ booth is being set up. You’re once again amazed by the effort they put to organize this party.

You move your body slightly to the loud bass music, bobbing your head to the beat as you enjoy the moment. “Loosen up!” You yell over the volume, and you take a step closer to drape your arms over his shoulders, hooking them in place. Acknowledging the distance, Jaehyun backs away only to have you pulling him even closer. You continue with your motions, mouthing to the lyrics of the song. When you locked eyes with him, you saw the faintest blush tinge his cheeks, to say you were curious was an understatement.

“You good?” You wondered. He hasn’t spoken much since the encounter with Ten, but you did introduce him to your friends that you happened to bump into, where he only answered their questions. You even caught some of the girls ogling at him shamelessly.

“You’re revealing too much skin,” he whispers, loud enough for you to hear. So that’s why, smirking at the thought. He’s been checking you out silently, not gonna lie about this, he did think you’re hot in the tube dress. The sweetheart neckline flaunts your sculpted collarbones and shoulders.

“Really?” You scoff in a joking manner and bring the glass to your lips, swallowing its content before setting it aside. Rising on your tiptoes, you push yourself to his ear, “Let’s go upstairs.”

The phrase immediately sent goosebumps to his skin, shivering a little when your fingers play with the short hairs at the back of his neck. ‘Going upstairs’ meant a lot especially for parties like this and he froze at the offer, his mind racing with the thoughts of the tricks you might pull on him. Certainly, he didn’t sign up for this when he agreed to your invitation in the first place.

You took his hand and make your way to an empty guestroom that’s almost at the end of the hallway, passing through people that are definitely getting drunk and wasted. It’s not like you’re eager to get to somewhere private just for the two of you and make out like some teenage couples, you would if you could. But that’s not the point anyway. You noticed that the longer you stay with the crowd, Jaehyun’s going to get more uncomfortable with the sweaty bodies and puffs of cigarette smoke that’s almost suffocating.

Closing the door behind, you both sit at the edge of the bed, relishing the silence in the room. “Ah.. So tired,” you arch your back and twist your neck before falling backwards onto the mattress, kicking off your heels afterwards. You never thought that parties are like a drainage of your energy, that is until you paused for a moment and felt a rush of fatigue in your muscles.

“You can let go of my hand now,” you nudge, giggling when he pulls away reluctantly.

“You must have hated the party a lot, isn’t it? Sorry for forcing you all the way here.” Swinging your sore feet as you speak. The heels are really a pain in the ass.

“There’s always a first time.” His eyes fixated on the door, refusing to look at you when you rolled over to properly lay on the bed.

“So sleepy…” you mumbled. It was quiet for a short time before you speak again, “So, how many girls have you dated before?”

It took him by surprise. The question wasn’t fitting with the mood and he’s more than weirded out that you actually paid a tiny amount of interest in his love life. Please, you paid a lot. “Just one.”

Cool. And you thought he would’ve at least three, judging that he has the looks, personality, intelligence and everything a girl dreams of. He’s literally a boyfriend material. “Why did you break up though?” you push on. “That must be very heartbreaking. It was your first love.”

“S-she dumped me…” You noticed the hesitation in his speech. Wow, this is some new information. Who knew someone had the nerves to do that, he’s a gem and you snickered, what a loss for her. As you’re still in your train of thoughts, Jaehyun has climbed himself to the other side of the bed, shoulders to shoulders.

“Y/N…” Hearing your name fell from his lips, you forgot everything you knew about gravity. “I have something to ask you…”

“Hm?”

“W-was it really your birthday last week?” Your body shook at his question, a tinkling musical child’s laugh, bubbling up out of your chest. He’s so cute.

“You’re still thinking about that?”

His fingers rubbing the fabric of the hem of his shirt nervously, gulping in embarrassment. “I-I mean…”

“Yeah. It was.” “Want to know what I wished for?”

nobody else is writing meta analysis for vivarium so i guess i have to do it

Vivarium is a 2019 horror film that the internet doesn’t seem to know what to think of. Most YouTube videos as per usual don’t wanna engage with it on anything more than an extremely literal surface level (hence the abundance of “VIVARIUM EXPLAINED” videos that just recap the plot to you as though you can’t see with your eyeballs that yes, he put on the nametag, that sure is what happened onscreen, yes I fucking get it the boy is like a cuckoo-esque brood parasite I GET IT) that ultimately devolve into speculative fanfiction about how effectively the aliens can take over the world. There are a few people here and there a little more willing to at least engage with what the movie has to say, and from there you get takes about how it’s about how the golden capitalist ideal of the suburban nuclear family is a banal hellscape, which I’d say is generally pretty accurate. Tom spends his entire time at Number 9 labouring, digging a hole while Gemma looks after the boy because he doesn’t know what else to possibly do with himself, an action that wears him down and ultimately costs him his life, and for all his trouble all he’s found is the body of the last guy who tried to labour his way out of this situation. All he’s done is created is a grave for his “offspring” to dump him into.

Like, as far as Capitalism Bad stories go this one’s pretty on-the-nose, and a lot of the people griping that the story was confusing are mostly the ones that seems to have missed this. (For an even longer tangent about how a lot of scifi stories aren’t going to make sense to you if you resist the very obvious thematic readings they’re giving you because you think things can’t be that deep I recommend Dan Olson’s excellent video on Annihilation.)

Occasionally, though, you get people also mentioning how it’s a little about animal rights, and even more especially about nature versus nurture. For the most part, Tom and Gemma are not kind to the boy. They (understandably) have nothing but contempt towards him. They openly discuss how creepy he is when he’s within earshot. At one point they try to lock him in the car to starve just to see if whoever comes to get his body can be forced to let them go, and they only back out on the plan when the fact that he looks and acts like a child in that moment gets to Gemma and she lets him out. Eventually, the boy grows into an emotionally distant young adult that locks Tom out of the house to die and doesn’t seem to give two shits about their suffering now that he’s bigger and stronger than his “parents”. Surely, we think, if Gemma and Tom had been kinder to him, he would have grown into a kinder adult, even if he was an alien? Are they not perpetuating this literal cycle of violence?

And with regard to the nature versus nurture reads, I actually directly disagree and find it at odds with the Capitalism Bad message, because my read is this:

No amount of kindness or understanding would have turned the boy into a good person, and acting like it would have is in fact part of the trap. Gemma and Tom would have wound up used up and dead either way, because thematically speaking, what the boy is there to do is to collect data.

More under the cut, I have a lot of opinions about this.

The boy’s creepy alien gimmick is mimicry. It’s what the realtor (p clearly a member of the same species) does when trying to entice Tom and Gemma into Number 9. The realtor is better at saying context-appropriate things than the boy is, but still slips up every now and then, and even so his mannerisms aren’t quite right. At best, he sounds like he’s regurgitating a script (a bit more admissible given he’s trying to sell something). At worst, he parrots Gemma’s “no, not yet” back to her in exactly her voice. Everything he’s saying, it’s clear he’s going through motions without any real understanding of what those motions are, beyond, “This is the thing you say to sell a house.”

The boy is demonstrably worse at it. He’ll parrot entire conversations back to the people who had them regardless if it makes sense to do so. He rarely speaks in his own voice, instead chopping up various words he’s heard from both parents. He doesn’t seem to have much sense for what is and isn’t appropriate to mimic (to the point of Gemma quite transparently tricking him into revealing he’s an alien outright), much less what makes sense for him to mimic.

He develops this skill gradually over the course of the movie, gets a bit better at putting together sentences people can actually reply to. But even then, he doesn’t seem to engage with the context overall of the conversation. After aforementioned alien reveal, with Tom growing sicker by the day, Gemma begins to cry and back away in horror, and we get this exchange:

The boy: Are you [overwhelmed] again, Mother? Gemma: I am not your mother! The boy: Are you [overwhelmed]? Gemma: I want to go home. The boy: Silly mother. You are home!

There’s no real engagement with the actual conversation at hand. This is the kind of script a reply bot runs. It emulates emotion the same way it emulates everything else.

His nature is reflected by the surroundings: The identical miles of houses with framed pictures of those houses on their own walls, with no real understanding of what people do and don’t want in the aesthetics of a house. The food that looks correct, but has no flavour or nutritional value, eventually leading to not just Tom’s death, but eventually Gemma’s. The entire world, from the Number 9 house to the suburbs of Yonder in general with its fake clouds, to the boy and its interactions, are fake, hollow, and the kind of thing an alien with no real care for the real human experience beyond perpetuating the system’s own growth would create.

And at this point hopefully some of you have noticed, we’ve seen this exact behaviour pattern before.

i’m quoting the reply on that second one here by @dukeofankh because it’s extremely relevant to this entire thing:

Like, so much of modern capitalist marketing is the construction of these superficially personal narratives. Giving the sense, not only that the brand fits in with your identity, but that it is almost a sentient individual itself that has a personal relationship with you. Corporations have personalities. They want to be your friend, and the reason that the entire internet economy runs on the currency of data right now is that the only way to prop up the illusion that they care about you is by already having the information about you that real people would gain by paying attention

But the only way they can collect and sort all that data is with computers, without any actual humans involved past setting up the parameters and pressing “go.” And computers are fucking idiots.

Which leaves us here: this false, saccharine message of togetherness and community–community between you and your friends but more importantly between all of you and Facebook–stripped fucking bare by the fact that the cookie-cutter algorithm can’t tell the difference between friends supporting and caring about each other and Thanos with a dumptruck ass.

The boy is here to collect data, and he collects it and regurgitates it as though it all has equal relevance to the situation at hand.

He reacts with the same polite indifference to open contempt, genuine warmth and an attempt to bond with him, terror directed at him, and pleas for mercy from him. Later on when we get a glimpse of the “inner workings” of the house, we see the boy watching another set of parents rawdogging the shit out of each other, and applauding appreciatively with the same blank amusement as he applauds to everything else. He sees Gemma and Tom dancing to the music from their radio outside, trying to have one bright moment with one another despite the grim circumstances they’re in, and he immediately inserts himself into the moment with zero awareness that he isn’t wanted here (granted that’s also extremely a little kid thing to do lol).

Which leads to the fact that that isn’t to say he doesn’t have his moments of personality. He smiles at positive attention (as well as negative attention), he enjoys interaction. He throws a tantrum when he’s told he can’t watch fucked up alien meat television at 3 am and turns it right back on. About the only time we get a genuine reaction from him is when he gets locked in the car to starve.

But then, so do things like Alexa, or Siri, or Cortana. You can have little conversations with it. It can tell jokes. You can ask it the meaning of life and it’ll tell you 42. You can insult it and it’ll do an EPIC SNAPBACK OMG SO SASSY. The people who designed it want you to view it as a friend, even as it sits there and spies on you and integrates itself more and more into your life.

Gemma lets him out of the car because (also understandably) she can’t bring herself to kill something that looks like a child. Later on, when she speaks with a dying Tom, she wonders why she didn’t kill him when he was still small. Tom tells her, “Because you’re a good person.” Their problems could have maybe (I mean probably not we’ll never know, at the very least Tom wouldn’t have died of exposure maybe) been solved if they just locked the thing in the car and ignored it, but in the end they still wound up viewing it as a person.

Tom and Gemma openly comment that the boy is always, always watching them, knowing full well they’re within earshot of him. He doesn’t retaliate for this, they’re never punished for saying it. Why would he? It’s what he’s there to do. He knows they know he’s watching. Water is wet. The boy watches.

Of course, when he is older, and better at putting together conversations that sound like an actual person, Gemma is openly terrified of him. His mannerisms don’t change, but conversationally he seems to at least understand whats being said to him, and is willing to ask more in-depth questions, graduation from, “What’s a dog?” to “Why did you say ‘you’re welcome’?”

By the end of the movie, the boy matures into a man. He’s gotten a bit better at knowing which words to parrot at what time, something we can watch him improve upon as the movie goes, and still insists, to Gemma’s last breath, that she’s his mother and that she is home. Gemma dies telling him, “I’m not your fucking mother.”

This is maybe the only other genuine reaction we get from the boy: a disappointed, “Whatever,” before he zips up the bodybag and chucks her into the hole as well. He cleans up the house for the next occupants and leaves. He takes the now-dying realtor’s nametag and puts it on himself, folds up the old realtor and stuffs it in a drawer, and takes his place in the office ready to lure the next couple to the suburbs of Yonder, with words that almost, but not quite, convince you he’s a person, and by that point it’s too late.

The boy was only ever there to make sure someone would be in Number 9 to make sure someone would be there to raise the next boy to make sure someone would be led to Number 9 to raise the next boy.

And who among us haven’t left this exact message, or even said this exact thing out loud, to the bot hanging over our shoulder watching us constantly, politely asking if we want help or suggested content?

Roleplayer: Largely harmless, just here to have fun, have been following the comic since day one. Mildly irritating to wade through when you look through the comics for actual discussion about the story, since a lot of their posts are shaped by headcanon by necessity. Usually chill.

Lore Bro: Similar brand of annoying to the roleplayers in that they assume their headcanons to be canon and act accordingly, but infinitely less fun to read because they don't even have the courtesy of pretending to be a dragon first and will not back the fuck off when proven wrong. Will get very, very angry when their headcanons turn out to be wrong. Are here primarily for the lore in fact. Become even more upset when it becomes clear Abbadon isn't and consider it a failure of writing.

Twitter Brainrot: Are looking to this comic to deliver Good Representation and Moral Truths. Very angry that Steven Universe advocates genocide and war crimes. Continually shocked when a trans character makes a bad, selfish decision, or a pee-oh-cee slices someone in half with a very big sword and intestines fly everywhere and they choke to death on their own blood. Wants you very badly to know that this behaviour is NOT okay or healthy in real life! <3

Comment Poets: Try to say deep one-liners in a similar voice to the Song of Maybe. At best state the obvious. At worst, directly embody that Dril tweet about there beign zero difference between good and bad things. Whoa....... maybe the bad guys had a point........ makes you think............ Can't knock them too hard though because they're some of the only people in the comments actually directly trying to directly engage with the comic and its subject matter! Good for you guys, keep up the good work, maybe work on the delivery.

okay FIIIIIINE i'll throw my hat into the Goncharov ring

Been a while i've done a proper movie breakdown, may as well be this one.

Rather surprisingly (but perhaps not too surprisingly given the unexpected renaissance of things like the original Dracula and Breaking Bad on this website out of seemingly nowhere and with very little prompting), I'm seeing a lot of new people suddenly interested in Martin Scorsese's seminal film classic Goncharov, originally released in 1973. Obviously a movie like that doesn't make it coming up on 50 years without generating a lot of discussion about the different ways the movie resonates and why, but coming into it in 2022 there's been so much cultural cruft that's collected around Goncharov that (similar to stories like Fight Club and Scarface) it's a little hard to parse what it's actually about with all the mythologising that's gone on around the characters.

Those movies, in one way or another, are about portraying the downfall of their protagonists -- Fight Club's after ironically creating another system of control and dehumanisation and becoming what he sought to destroy, Scarface's after being consumed by the wealth and power he's amassed. A lot of people assume it's that kind of story, because aren't most well-loved movies? However, I think this is ironically an assumption made because of the genre of film it is. All the people that aren't going, "OMG Goncharov is so cool and badass and fucks bitches," are going, "WOW I can't believe Goncharov is a cautionary tale about power corrupting," and in the process people miss that Goncharov is first and foremost about loss, in all its different forms.

I'm both kind of surprised and frustrated people miss this, given how utterly pervasive the movie is with its clock symbolism -- it's the one thing everyone remembers about it, it was in all the tie-ins. I dunno, maybe that got funneled back into the theory where they're meant to reinforce how Goncharov is just a mortal man at the end of the day, which is fine I guess, but the movie overall becomes a lot clearer when you interpret it through the lens of, "These things are gone and you can never get them back; clocks don't go backwards."

One of the most fascinating things about the movie is how every character embodies a different kind of loss. I'm gonna ease into this and start not with Goncharov but with:

Rybak, who is usually associated with loss as we typically think of it, i.e. the loss of loved ones via death. This comes up all the time, either in his trust issues (why he's being such a prick at the wedding), in the card game (he never bothers to bet much money, knowing he's bad at poker, and still loses all the same). Rybak is terrified of loss, cannot manage it, and ultimately is punished by losing what few people he had left and then being spared by Lorenzo who deems him punished enough, and is forced to survive, to grapple with what his life is now without them.

Goncharov's is actually more subtle, and it's loss of small, insignificant things as a result of the larger losses he believes he's processed. This is something that's frequently contrasted against Rybak. The pawn shop going under is actually a microcosm of this whole thing. Goncharov anticipates that this is obviously going to lead to financial issues for him, plans accordingly to deal with this, and... it works! He's saved! Except that means card games can't be hosted at his place anymore, given it's burned to the ground. Does this matter, in the grand scheme of his life? No, of course not. Poker night still gets had all the same. But it is different now, and always will be. Little things like this continue to add up, until something as insignificant as a towel -- a towel that never should have been in his room, but Sofia is no longer there to drop off his laundry and chat with him -- is ultimately the final nail in a coffin built of insignificant splinters, each one an imperceptible change underneath the much more larger, noticeable story beats of things like grief.

Otto is the big obvious one I'm not gonna linger on: loss of his youth, moments in the past that he wants to redo but can't. Most people at least seem to have gotten this one.

(This is also what the clocks get associated with a lot, which again, doesn't NOT make sense but also if it were just for this one character that, while thematically important, was honestly just a side character with limited screentime and only two scenes, would they really be all over the movie before Otto's name is even mentioned?)

Sofia's a bit abstract, and is the loss of self -- of the familiar anchors we have to who we are, what we think our core principles are, our place in society, who we want to be to our loved ones -- and by the time she dies she is rendered utterly unrecognisable to herself, and is horrified by it. She grieves herself the same way Rybak grieves his wife (even gets a direct visual callback via the way her face is lit when she's burning Lorenzo's check). You see echoes of this in Goncharov as well, but while Sofia is grieving the person she used to be, Goncharov is grieving the world around him (even though really, it's the same world it always was -- time keeps ticking on, one second per second, and neither one of them can ever un-fire that gun).

Lorenzo, tragically, gradually loses his freedom (and maybe in a parallel world would actually be the protagonist of a movie where he chokes on his own hubris like everyone seems to think Goncharov is GRUMBLE GRUMBLE). As he comes into his own more and more by his family's legacy, he is afforded fewer and fewer options about what decisions he can even make. Arguably he was doomed from the start, but the further he clings to power as a means to freedom, the more it drives him to destroying everything he ever (thought he) cared about. The tragedy of his character, and what makes him a good villain, is that he can clearly see what he is doing to himself and he absolutely hates it (his walking out early at the wedding is a tacit admission of this), but his absolute refusal to accept loss, to accept grief and pain and all the awful shit that comes with the human condition, is what causes him to toss aside every out he has because if he has enough CONTROL over his situation, surely he will never have to lose anything ever again. But, really, he already has.

I dunno. Goncharov is one of those movies that is great, and everyone seems to realise it's great, but nobody ever really puts into words why, and that's how you get Fight Club fans lmao. And it sucks because the actual discussion around the movie beyond "it's another hubris story but REALLY GOOD guys" is so much more fascinating and a much more earnest emotional truth that just never gets talked about.
