Orb: On The Movements Of The Earth
Tumblr media
I cannot stress enough how anyone with even little wonder about the cosmos needs to watch/read this.
I'm filled with awe and gratefulness and frustration and hope and rage and love and joy about the knowledge we have today and the leaps and bounds we've made in our understanding of the universe as a species.

Y'know I feel like we didn't shit on Logan Paul enough when he went to a forest known for suicides to record people's bodies and then did just that.
Is anyone just flabbergasted he's getting anywhere? Like sure fine, WWE are dumb enough to hire a known scammer and frivilous lawsuiter, UFC too, but why the hell is he showing up on other people's Social Media channels?
Ya'll have control of your content and put that potential future (insert here) in charge. Impressive. I certainly wouldn't want someone with nothing but bad PR and child fanbases to infect my channel and potentially force me to take down content and faux apologize, but sure. Sure. Take that risk because people won't hold you accountable for enabling him.
I just ask when his innevitable downfall comes, you go to every motherfucker that hosted him and shit on them for lacking credibility, shame, or standards. Nobody who's hosting this cunt should be left untouched by his future actions. They enabled him every step of the way when normal people would've moved on.
He's not exactly subtle about being a dogshit grifter.
mmw, he's gonna have a plummet and people WILL need to delete videos involving him over it.
Do Not Let Them Get Away With It.
This shit needs to end Now. You do that by focusing on enablers. Not the target themselves, they'll bring focus to their own downfall, enablers soften that plummet.

thanks for sharing that trans violence advocate article. I'm always afraid to share it because bringing it up always seems to bring a bunch of people out of the woodwork to call the sharers MRAs.
Yeah I do get that a lot, but for my own mental health I choose to believe those are fake accounts and not real trans women because what they're saying is so fucking stupid and cruel that it must be a psy-op meant to divide the community. And if there are real trans women saying that shit, they're fucking stupid assholes and I don't respect them or their opinions anyway. But to be fair, they are probably like 19 years old and I'm not about to fight a child.

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Tumblr media
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?
#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point!#Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress#Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending#Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale#I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too#But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL#That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example)#But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe'#Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny#And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances?#Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death?#What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child?#And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward?#Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives?#But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death#The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable#Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal?#Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing'#In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs?#And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon#But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife?#At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians?#It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking#about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind#But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!'#Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do#Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time#Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar#But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially?#Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

One day I'll write my thesis about Patronuses and what I think that should be and how stupid Rowling Motherfucker Bitch's decisions were.
WHY IS GINNY'S A HORSE. WHY IS SHE A HORSE GIRL. WHY ARE ALL THE POTTER CONNECTIONS DEER. WHY. IS LILY A DOE????? There's so way she knew about Prongs before she made a corporeal Patronus. AND WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE A GIRL IF THAT'S THE RELATION? IT SHOULD BE A STAG.
Why aren't Patronuses more fluid? Like, apparently they change based on love but we've only seen one instance? Also hilarious to me that Remus' Patronus is a WOLF. And doesn't change when Tonks' does.
I think! Making the Patronus align with Animagus forms! Is stupid!! And a cop out!!!! Animagus = your animal counter part - if you were an animal, what would you be? Patronus = physical embodiment of your hope!!!! The only excuse is Wolfstar because of how young they had their animagus forms and knew of them before successful Patronus creation. EVERYONE ELSE CAN SUCK A DICK, WHY. IS JAMES HIMSELF HIS SOURCE OF HOPE??? IS HE THAT CONCEITED?????
Welcome to my TedTalk. Fuck JKR.

I ended up reading The Price of the Phoenix and while it didn't make me want to bleach my eyes like Killing Time, I still didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. Don't get me wrong, the homoeroticism was intriguing to me, but the actual writing and storyline itself left me with a headache. I think I get my hopes up with these books, given all of the possibilities that the written word has for Trek, and it inevitably sets me up for disappointment lol
#if u liked it thats fine I just kind of hated it#star trek#The only ones Ive genuinely liked so far is STTMP and the one about Garak written by Andrew Robinson#i wish Roddenberry had written more. STTMP was no literary masterpiece but his writing style had a lot of potential and I feel that#he actually captured the characters authentically and you could relate to their feelings#Price of the Phoenix had all of this corny alpha male shit going on that almost made me feel#like the author just didn't know how to write men or something#Like they relied a lot on stereotypes of the time which sucked considering that Kirk and co. are supposed to be living in the future#the dialogue was clunky and even confusing at times#and the characters were just#idk. vapid to me#Like Kirk and Spock's love for each other is portrayed which is nice but basically everything else about them just didnt feel#accurately characterized or otherwise explored#it was basically just muliple chapters of several different versions of Kirk getting his ass kicked & this big weird villain dude taking up#space on the page with his plan to take over the universe or whatever#the reincarnation concept was intriguing but the themes just weren't clear enough for me#the end haha#sttos#k/s#review#price of the phoenix#well Im glad I read it anyway I was curious#i get kind of leary of certain K/S content TBF since a lot of it- esp around that time- comes off as voyeuristic towards M/M relationships#a lot of those ppl didnt exactly care about queer movements as much as they cared about seeing their two fictional favs fuck#yes there were queer writers but we didnt always exactly get center stage in these things#you can tell what is written with respect and whats just kinda. written. you feel me#i love K/S and its history but Im not gonna pretend all or even half of it was written with the intention of uplifting queer men#i ended up having more to say than I realized uhhhhhh to be continued at another date

The amazing thing is not that the stomach churns, it's that it doesn't churn more often
#I've seen people say ''hamas is not murdering civilians it's expelling settlers''#i've seen people be rabidly anti-Semitic about people fleeing in airports#newsflash: there's not exactly a robust train system or safe roads#i've seen people— neighbors. neighbors. say that animal control is the best solution for this#i've seen people posting maps of reservoirs in Gaza and @-ing the Israeli government in it#i've seen pictures#i've seen people calling for retaliation on Iran and listing off targets#i've unfollowed countless people I thought I had things in common with because nothing anyone can do is criminal#forget evil for a second; evil's not a historical category#this is; as another put it; a series of massacres#and yes most if not all anticolonial movements went through massacres#and I do believe people who switch sides or withdraw any sympathy and wash their hands of it the moment a massacre are committed#i believe that those people are deeply unserious; no matter how sympathetic i am to them#and I also personally don't believe Hamas is doing this half-cocked/for the fun of it/with no blueprint for the political aftermath#i do think this is not random; senseless violence. it was carefully planned violence. a very organized massacre#and of course the stomach churns to that; as it did to what came before and what came after#i just wonder whether anything else is possible. if there is a path to peace where our stomachs will not churn. one not forged in massacre#it wasn't possible for French Algeria. it wasn't possible for India. it wasn't possible for Haiti. it has happened elsewhere#but can anything else happen here ? within these borders ? with these people ? with all the blood ?#so as I have always done and will likely always do I support any Palestinian challenge to the occupation#but the stomach churns at it. don't believe it doesn't

I also have an internal monologue constantly but it's like talking to another person. I mean I'm talking to myself but as if it was another person. So I also think/say "you have to do this", "please be calm", etc .
I thought it was what everyone does... isn't it?
sometimes! peoples thought streams are all different. many people think in first person, some in second or even third; usually ppl use different perspectives at different times. lots of thoughts aren't words at all, just a flow of feelings and concepts. personally I often talk to myself in second person. I also sometimes use 'we', referring to myself as speaker and listener. how and why this kind of thing happens, and how common it is, is probably beyond my expertise. but i promise you are not weird for it lol
#it brings up some interesting questions about how we conceive of the self in different scenarios#maybe sometimes its easier to use 'you' because conceiving of oneself as a different entity makes it easier to put things in perspective#or give orders or make observations yanno. we often give other people's thoughts more credence than our own so its a pretty neat trick to#pull on yourself i would say#same/similar thing with 'we'#i use it cause it makes me feel less lonely which is depressing i know#but also we give the thoughts of collectives/groups more weight than those of one person so its also useful for making judgements#internal monologues are so so interesting#i could talk about the way i think for a very long time which is lowkey narcissistic but i havent exactly been in anyone elses head so#some people dont have a discrete internal monologue; its like just a flow of concepts and impulse#sometimes thoughts can be chains of interconnected memories images and sensations esp for neurodivergent ppl#for me my clearest thoughts/emotions are tactile/proprioceptive impressions of shape and movement that i then have to pick up and examine t#understand what they mean exactly#like ohhh this thing made me feel *hands smoothing on the underside of a round smooth cold stone structure with weird amounts of affection#and the tensing that indicates they are getting ready to lift*#like what does THAT mean#anyway that was a very long tangent#you are normal. everyone is different. brains are cool. end of story#autism squeaks

                    @detectiveconnor    /    cont. from ↷
Tumblr media
She thinks she’s alive. Didn’t... expect to be. Still expects it to  not be over,  expects a fight. First instinct is to reach for her pistol, but she barely manages to make her hand twitch; it wouldn’t be on her, she supposes, anyway. Her omni-tool is non-responsive. Figures... Slowly, she gains better awareness of herself: nothing feels broken, but everything hurts nevertheless; trying to move makes her groan in pain. The remainders of her armour feel heavy on her torso and limbs.
There’s someone... Wren tries to force her eyes to focus, blinks slowly, fails at attempting to sit up.
It nearly fails to register that Ms Shepard is meant to be her. It’s the miss that sounds alien, unfamiliar.
Tumblr media
Her instinct tells her something is  wrong,  but she’s too out of it to put two and two together.    ❝ Did it work? ❞    she croaks, as she processes the stranger’s words. Did she do it? Is it over? How many casualties? Her friends... did they survive?    ❝ The Crucible... ❞  She trails off. Ms Shepard. Connor. Remember how you got... A civilian? Where is she? This... isn’t the Citadel. Maybe the blast... But this isn’t Earth, either. Maybe she’s missed time. Someone must have moved her. But... It doesn’t make any sense.
❝ I’m fine, ❞    she tries to reassure, but her head’s swimming, pounding, and she can’t sit up, as she tries, again.    ❝ A concussion, I think, do you... Sorry, do you know... what happened? ❞    She means with the Reapers. She means with the  war.  He... A human civilian?    ❝ Where am I? ❞    Because this is not the Citadel, this is not Earth... is it? It couldn’t possibly be; it’s too silent. Too calm. Something about that scares her in ways she cannot wrap her head around.

This couldn’t be left in the notes
I think it's silly that the star trek future is still so same-with-same when it comes to alien species. I think a Klingon vessel should comm the enterprise and a random Human ensign should go "Oh my god wait are you from the House of Ragh-Tul? No way! That's my cousin's house!" because they recognize the dialect. Like, we're all neighbors in the universe. That Vulcan is your primary school teacher's daughter. You're an Andorian but you have a Betazoid name because your dad thought it sounded pretty. This random alien knows how to make kimchi without ever having seen a Human because the recipe was part of a trade made decades ago. C'mon man, love thy neighbor with your whole heart!
