i'm kept up at night sick to the stomach by the fact that i may never see evita (2019) (at the new york city center) (starring solea pfeiffer and maia reficco) again. this is the problem with being absolutely infatuated with productions that weren't particularly popular the bootlegs just don't exist. if i ever came across a slime tutorial of this show i'd cherish it more than a first born child you have no clue how important this production of evita is to me

Ruben V. Nepales: Farewell and thanks for the delicious Filipino food and best of all, for the scintillating conversations, Lem Balagot!
Lemuel “Lem” Lorenzana Balagot
May 3, 1951 - October 17, 2024
We lost a Filipino cuisine pioneer in America and owner of the long-running and everyone's favorite, L A Rose Cafe.
So many memories.
When Darren Criss and his mom organized an intimate breakfast gathering the morning after the 2019 Golden Globes, where else did the mother-son have it but at Darren's favorite LA Pinoy restaurant?
Serendipitously, Darren won the Globe for "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" the night before (becoming the first Filipino American to win a Golden Globe) so it was an extra special celebration over Lem's yummy Pinoy breakfast fare.
When the Globes held a press conference with Paris Hilton, we heard that she loved Filipino food in her Manila visits. So we thought of Lem to cater the event. Paris loved the food so much that she asked to have photos with Lem and his staff.
Janet Susan Rodriguez Nepales and I are also glad that our girls got to know Lem this year. Nikki Bianca Nicole and Ella Rafaella Angelica met Lem when he catered our housewarming in the Valley but they were too young to remember him.
In more recent times, Nikki and Ella got to know Lem as they dined at LA Rose Cafe. Lem sat down with our family when we had lunch at LA Rose before we headed to a wedding mass in summer this year.
Some of Lem's endearing qualities were his affability, wit, humor and intelligence. Our conversations with him were as satisfying as his lunch and dinner staples. We brought Hollywood friends and colleagues to his Fountain Ave. cafe.
Last time we ate at LA Rose, we brought a visiting friend Evita Wise to dinner with our family. Janet and I just told the staff to give our love and hugs to him since he was upstairs, resting from a treatment. The day after, he called to say thanks and ask how the food and service was.
About three weeks before Lem passed away, we had a long phone conversation about many topics, from the recent earthquakes to his health condition. From out of the blue, he spontaneously said some very kind words to Janet and me which we will always treasure.
Paalam, Lem. We will miss you. We will always remember you. Hugs and sincerest sympathies to Lem's partner, Rai, and Lem's family.
LA Rose Cafe will remain open -- if you have not been there, try it one of these days. And to all of Lem's regular patrons and friends, let's keep LA Rose Cafe jumping in loving memory of and in tribute to the wonderful human being Len was.
******
From the family:
An open casket viewing will be held on November 6 from 10 am to 8 pm, followed by a closed casket visitation on November 7 from 10 am to 8 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9 at 9:00 am at the Church of the Recessional, also at Forest Lawn Glendale with a reception at LA Rose to follow at 12 pm. The family requests that flowers be delivered to Forest Lawn Glendale, located at 1712 S. Glendale Avenue, Glendale, California 91205.

Rating fictional depictions of Che Guevara part 1
Epic Rap Battles of History
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9/10. i can't believe they got the real che guevara to play che guevara
he lost this battle and his second verse kinda sucked and i have to dock points off of him for that HOWEVER his oneliners make up for it. "asthmatic but i'll take your breath away" "i'm the hardest marxist ever graced a banknote" absolutely iconic. also the fact he seems more mad that guy fawkes FAILED than any personal beef with him. he's not serious and he's not supposed to be but he slayed anyway.
Evita (1999)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
kinda conflicted about this one. bro's only in this musical because he's argentine and that's it. in later version he isn't even che guevara anymore. but still, he kinda served cunt. havent seen mandy patinkin's version but raul esparza's version kinda devoured. that man has no respect for anything or anyone in this show. just rabid the entire time. entirely accurate as a communist being forced to be in a musical about bourgeois electoral politics. i gotta give him a 8/10 because while it doesnt make sense for him to be here (or even be the one fitting his given narrative role; from what i know, che irl didn't particularly dislike eva peron?) he gave it his all.
Sharehouse Nile
Tumblr media Tumblr media
0/10. class traitor x2. dating marie antoinette. they took away his beard and twinkified him. i'll never forgive him
Che Guevara (Moon Senka 2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
unfortunately i have not been able to find this musical anywhere online, which is absolutely tragic. so i must go by the gifsets and the art. anyways it's ladies in cuban revolutionary drag how could you not like it. there's some chedel homoeroticism here and those outfits look great. i cant give it more than a 5/10 because i havent seen it, HOWEVER know that my 5/10 is the highest i can give with the cap...

On this night fifty years ago (10 December 1974) NBC broadcast a TV adaptation of Arthur Miller’s 1964 play After the Fall. (Full disclosure: I haven’t seen it! It doesn’t appear to be streaming anywhere). After the Fall is widely perceived to be Miller’s semi-autobiographical reflections on his stormy marriage to Marilyn Monroe between 1956 and 1961. Faye Dunaway (pictured) portrays Maggie (the Marilyn-inspired character). Which reminded me that Dunaway has portrayed a remarkably disparate range of real-life women in her career: Bonnie Parker (Bonnie & Clyde (1967)), evangelist Sister Aimee Semple McPherson (The Disappearance of Aimee (1976)), Joan Crawford (Mommie Dearest (1981)), Eva Peron (Evita Peron (1981), Maria Callas (onstage in Master Class (1996)), Yolande of Aragon (The Message: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999)), Mae West (The Calling (2002)) and - briefly! - Katharine Hepburn (onstage in Tea at Five (2019)). (Totally botched the date on this post! "The production was broadcast on NBC on December 10, 1974." My mistake!).

8 "Like a prayer" - Madonna
writers Madonna and Pat Leonard
"As close to art as pop music gets" - Rolling Stone
Part of the UncoolTwo50 project, marking the best singles from 1977-99.
Reputations can go down as well as up. Madonna had been the hottest thing in pop during the mid-1980s, smashes like "Into the groove" and "Papa don't preach" had been inescapable. Then she'd run into a bad crowd - married Sean Penn, made the not-very-good movie Who's that girl?, taken up running with a cougar, and dropped out of the media megastar limelight to appear in the Broadway play Speed-the-plow.
Tumblr media
So, after an unusually long silence, we had high hopes for "Like a prayer". Madge did not disappoint.
"She's coming back with not just a good Madonna song, but with this totally over the top masterpiece. It's like she's stepped back in time to her "Like a virgin" disco days, pulled out a thumping great dance beat, mixed together all these ideas about religion and lurve in a most Prince-like fashion, and thrown in the massed ranks of a gospel choir to boot. Madonna returns triumphantly. Gasp in amazement." - Smash Hits
"Like a prayer" begins and ends with squealing guitar riffs, moves through basic pop-dance, to a gospel choir finale. Five-and-a-half minutes is long for a single, even in 1989, but it's difficult to say where any flab might lie.
It's the turning point in Madonna's career. She's no longer a bubblegum pop star who sings about falling for boys ("True blue"), breaking up bad relationships ("Causing a commotion"), and occasional balladry ("Live to tell"). No, here we have the proof that Madonna is constantly reinventing herself, striving to push the edge of art. We may have come into 1989 with doubts that Madonna was a great; "Like a prayer" proved she was.
Madonna's prepared to tackle the big burning questions of the late 1980s. Like, racism, and the Catholic church, and family relationships, and growing up. But mostly the Catholic church. "The theme of Catholicism runs rampant. It's me struggling with the mystery and the magic that surrounds it. My own Catholicism is in constant upheaval," Madonna said.
vimeo
Madonna is causing a commotion. The video for her new single "Like a prayer" has been banned by RAI, apparently it's blasphemous against their local version of Christianity.
Ah, the video. Madonna plays the role of a young woman in the throes of religious ecstacy, kissing a Black man who may or may not be Jesus, giving herself stigmata, bailing him out of jail, there are burning crosses on a hillside, and it's all very confusing. Especially if you're only watching Top of the Pops, where they made a 110-second compilation of clips from near the end of the video, and showed them out of order.
People who did see the video saw something that offended them, and they were not shy in voicing their displeasure. The furore caused the Pepsi corporation to cancel their advert with Madonna, as if there's something wrong with the little girl watching her older self dancing in the middle of a city street.
youtube
Anyway, Madonna came out of it richer by about $5 million, her image was burnished as someone feisty and in control of herself, and the Pepsi company looked like cowards. Later in the year, she'd begin her Blonde Ambition tour, then came more music, movies, children, though the next husband is after the year 2000. Madonna continued to make essential music into the new century: we may argue when she stopped being relevant, but everyone agrees she'd jumped the shark by her atrocious interval act at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.
For this project's longlist, I limited myself to one Madonna single from two albums. "Open your heart" from True Blue, which is an astonishingly mature song composition. "Deeper and deeper" from Erotica, updating traditional Madonna. "You must love me" from the Evita soundtrack, an under-rated song from a reviled part of her career. And "Frozen" from the album of the same name.

Your Cat musical is very good! Seriously, why is it better than Cats (Cats) (2019) , it’s so much better, it’s genuinely better.
You have made the weekend of myself and my two compatriots with Cats and a wolf with a party hat, many thanks ✨
Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I would genuinely love to do more experimental/outsider music. I love listening to it, and I loved making it! God, wouldn't it be a larf to do fucking Evita?

¿Y qué si el chico
ocupa la moneda para droga?
¿Y qué
si la emplea para comprar un cigarro suelto
o para estopa?
¿A ti, qué? ¿En qué te ensucian sus versiones de irse,
sus maneras de evitarse,
el transporte colectivo
en el que sueña no estar rumbo a su cuarto de cemento?
¿A ti qué
si ocupa esa moneda para no ver a su padre
cuando llega a verlo?
Si la gasta en comprarse
invisibilidad, o se emborracha
antes, ¿a ti qué?
