The Mechanic

An unnecessarily long fan essay examining the character ‘The Mechanic’ from Thunderbirds are Go by thunderbirds-are-fab

Pretty much since the Mechanic was first revealed as an upcoming character to be introduced into Thunderbirds are Go, he’s been surrounded by mystery. There were a lot of wild fan theories about who he could be and if he was related to any original character in particular (He was either Brains’ brother or his father, Kyrano gone mad, and even Jeff in some weird disguise trying to traumatise his children to someone), but he has since turned out to be a completely new character and therefore had a lot of possibilities as to how he could fit into the established TAG universe.

Sadly, two seasons since his introduction we still don’t know all that much about him or his super villain origin story, and with the conclusion of Season 3 we likely never will. The writers put this guy on the back shelf, and this is why I’m writing an essay piecing together all the messy details we have regarding the character of the Mechanic. It turns out there’s quite a lot to talk about, so get comfy.

*Episode spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched Seasons 2 and 3*

The biggest tease about the Mechanic was his hinting that he knows Brains very well or even personally in Earthbreaker, but after that it’s not really brought up again. Massive wasted potential there. He made it sound like he and Brains were old rivals from long ago, but Brains doesn’t show any signs of recognising him. Brains himself never really reacts to the Mechanic’s hints that they might know each other during Earthbreaker or after, and never even tries to guess at who this masked engineer may be, which feels ridiculous.

“Hey Brains, in all your years of being one of the world’s best engineers, did you ever meet anyone in your field of expertise who was capable of making an army of robots completely on his own, looked like he could bench press MAX with one hand, and maybe seemed a little power-hungry and unhinged?”

“Nope, sorry. That sounds like it could have been anyone.”

Surely if they were both brilliant inventors working on similar stuff, they would have mutually run into each other before???

Not only does Brains not keep up his end of the ‘we-may-know-each-other’ plotline to make it believable, but after Earthbreaker the writers seem to drop it from the Mechanic’s character too. He doesn’t show the same ominous bias towards focusing on Brains again whenever he crosses paths with IR, and if anything he seems to reacts with distrust towards Brains when he first offers to help him in Home on the Range. In Brains vs Brawn Brains offers to help him again, but still acts wary of him wanting to get close. If they had known each other before then this could have been a great bonding moment for them to reconnect and win each other’s trust, but instead Brains has to use the promise of “engineer to engineer” which is as far as their personal connection seems to go in the end.

Brains also only ever calls him “the Mechanic” the same as everyone else does, and going into Season 3 this lack of a proper name becomes more of a problem for the Mechanic’s character as a whole. We finally see him without his mask in Chaos Part 2, but a face reveal is all it is. It’s not a grand finale Scooby-Doo moment of “Aha! It was old man Jenkins the janitor all along!”, and this again feels like wasted potential to me. What’s the point of having a masked villain if he’s still exactly the same person without the mask, just a little sadder?

Between being taken into GDF custody in Brains vs. Brawn and then being negotiated for release in Break Out (a 20 episode gap, which is quite a long time span in TAGverse), the GDF don’t seem to have done any background check on him whatsoever. Everyone, including Colonel Casey, still refers to him as “the Mechanic”. If even the in-world authorities couldn’t find this guy’s original identity, then it seems that the entirety of who he was before never existed, and that’s because the writers never properly wrote it. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the TAG writers and have rarely had to fault them on anything in 78 episodes, but fitting their OCs into the series for more than an episode or two is by far their biggest weakness *coughcoughwhydidn’tyouuseEOSmorecough*

His backstory was clearly set up before his introduction, but then scrapped for whatever reason. Perhaps with everything else going on in the show they simply didn’t have time for it? This I can understand, because there’s only so much time in a children’s show and action has to come first in this genre, but it opens up a lot of additional plot holes when you keep trying to build a story on top of a poorly-established character.

What I’m trying to get at here is that without ever having his personal motivations revealed, looking back on the Mechanic’s pervious actions in the story gets a lot more confusing, and makes his character development and the plot development between Season 2 and 3 more difficult to understand.

I’ll split these last points into two parts:

1. How do we know he built the the T-Drive when he’s unidentifiable?

In Break Out it’s suddenly revealed that the Mechanic was the engineer who designed the first T-Drive engine/Zero-X prototype... But how? How do they now know that??? Surely being the engineer who came up with this fantastic revolutionary warp drive for the spaceship that allegedly killed the great Jeff Tracy would make this guy pretty famous? His former name should probably be common knowledge, and yet he’s still only ever called the Mechanic. It’s been suggested to me on anon that maybe he’s shunned his former name in favour of the Mechanic moniker, which is fine, except that’s no reason for all of the other characters never to speak his true name even when he’s not there to hear it. To us he’s still just the villain we were introduced to, never the man he was before. Without being shown how that past and him today are linked, it’s difficult for us as an audience to attach such important prior information to a character who doesn’t seem to have previously existed.

2. Was he ever really a true villain, or was it all because of the Hood? And does his change of heart make sense?

We’re never told how the Mechanic came to be. Why did he go from brilliant engineer, to turning over to the dark side and becoming a puppet of the Hood? In Break Out he hints that the Hood manipulated his bitterness over ~something~ in order to get him to work under him, but again it’s frustratingly vague! In the beginning we assumed it was through some personal grudge with Brains, but as I’ve already gone through at length, all that backstory just got washed away. Another anon has suggested to me that his rivalry with Brains was manufactured by the Hood. He didn’t know Brains personally, but developed a grudge against him through being compared. “Brains is brilliant, but you’re a failure”... because of the Zero-X disaster? He’s clearly as good as or even better than Brains when it comes to inventing things, so he had to have had something big happen to him in order to spiral downwards as he did. The Zero-X disaster would certainly fit the bill for that, but it’s a shame to leave all that to speculation. If it were true, then would it have been so hard to fit that into the show?

Anyway, the Hood somehow fostered a hatred for IR in him that served his own motives, and so began their partnership. He’s clearly very strong, so that’s probably why the Hood needed extra control over him via cybernetics. It’s in Brains vs. Brawn that we first learn that the Mechanic is at least partially being controlled by the Hood. Since the Hood spent most of Season 2 in jail, this was maintained through a connection between his bionic eye and some kind of cybernetics that the Mechanic has (forcibly implanted by the Hood or just already there and hacked, we don’t know). Partially coerced and partially forced, but we will never really know how much of each.

The Mechanic is a lot more violent than the Hood ever is on his own. The Hood may not care much for other people or the collateral damage he causes (e.g. in Falling Skies he’s fine with abandoning the Estrella Grand hotel full of people to crash and burn if he decides that he doesn’t want it anymore), but it isn’t really his priority. For the whole of Season 3 he makes the Chaos Crew do the physical dirty work he doesn’t care for (btw I let the Chaos Crew off for not having much background story because their “we’re bad just because we enjoy being that way” motive stays fairly consistent throughout the show. They aren’t that complicated).

In contrast, the Mechanic has frequently plowed forward with no regard for anyone’s safety. He doesn’t make sneaking around his Plan A like the Hood, and he doesn’t hit and run for fun like the Chaos Crew. He’s brutal. Earthbreaker really sets him up for being a ruthless villain because he’s so focused on getting what he wants that he’s willing to take down anyone who gets in his way. Even when Scott asks for him just to let IR work around him to rescue the civilians below, he attacks! He’s a genuinely scary and thrilling character for how relentlessly destructive he manages to be every time she shows up in Season 2. Seriously, just read his wiki page and you’ll see it’s got ‘perfect villain traits’ written all the way through it.

Then comes the redemption arc.

In Brains vs. Brawn he is subdued and chooses to trust that Brains can redeem him. In Break Out he shows remorse for his actions. He believes that he deserves to be in prison and is beyond redemption for what he’s done. He puts Kayo’s safety before his own and saves her life. He could have disappeared, but instead comes to Tracy Island of his own free will and voluntarily works with his former enemies. That’s a pretty big change from someone who was hellbent on destruction regardless of innocent people begging for their lives! It’s a pretty big ask to believe that all of that relentless anger and complete apathy towards human life was only there because the Hood was in control the whole time.

There’s something else which leads me to believe that “I was being controlled by the Hood” isn’t the watertight excuse it’s presented as. The Mechanic makes it sound like he’s totally stuck and irredeemable without the Hood’s control being removed, but prior to that happening in Buried Treasure he makes choices of his own that the Hood could’ve stopped.

Between being dumped by the Hood in Escape Proof and Brains vs. Brawn, he’s pretty much a villain under his own steam. He’s working independently on continuing Project Sentinel, which has the aim of using to destroy the Hood for having control over him. Sure, he may only be doing bad things because he’s desperate for revenge against his abuser, but he’s still willfully endangering a lot of other people in the process. The Hood may have lost interest in him during that period, but the control system was still in place that whole time - and he was resisting it! If he can manage to hide himself from the Hood and work directly against him despite that, then he still has some free will of his own.

In Chaos - Part 2 Havoc learns the Mechanic is in space prison, which is why the Hood has lost control over him. Arguably the HEX probably had a faraday cage around his prison cell to block the Hood’s influence, and it is stated that it’s harder for the Hood to influence him from space anyway. But after breaking out and coming to Tracy Island of his own free will, shouldn’t being back on earth have put him back under influence again? The only time he had to fight against the Hood’s direct control after that was when Brains disturbed the control software and alerted the Hood, who then suddenly reveals that he has a fail-safe that can wipe the Mechanic’s memories. Wow. If he could really do that, then why didn’t he do so in Escape Proof and not leave the Mechanic as the potential enemy that he turned out to be? Sure, he later says that he still has plans for the Mechanic, but you would think that during Brains vs. Brawn when he’s getting shot at by a giant lazer whilst being thrown around by IR, and the Mechanic is resisting his commands to stop, that then would have been the ideal time to use the secret factory reset ability?

Afterthoughts aside, I’m still convinced that the Mechanic had a lot of evil in himself that wasn’t just there because of the Hood, and it’s really a wonder that the Tracys let him into heir home after how many times he tried to kill them. i really don’t blame Scott for staying suspicious, even though he was the one most obviously anxious to find a way to get his father back.

Despite all the questions that the show failed to answer about him, I still think that the Mechanic was a good villain. Whatever his super villain origin story was supposed to be, I think it had a lot more potential to be morally complex than the origin they ended up giving the Hood. It’s a shame that writers across the board these days often don’t have the time to write villains more complex than the trope of “once upon a time somebody made me sad, so I decided to be evil to get revenge”. I know that somebody out there will be looking at this unnecessarily long post and screaming But fab, it’s just a kid’s show! Kids won’t care about tying up offscreen plotlines or any of this crap! And my answer is yes, I know that. That’s why I’m not actually mad about what the writers did with the Mechanic’s character. The writers of TAG did a great job and the show works as it is, but I can’t help but feel that they only had to push a little more or add a line or two somewhere and then all of these questions I have about the Mechanic could have been answered. A little backstory goes a long way in fleshing out a character, and Thunderbirds is a franchise with a lot of history.

Daisy isn’t thinking. Or, if she is, it isn’t really a logical thought process. More like a constant stream of panic. What Jemma would explain to her isn’t what feels like a heart attack, but is actually the fight-or-flight response. An animal reaction evolved over millenia in the face of peril. Theoretically somewhat logical.

But there’s nothing logical about her publicist (who is going to be fired as soon as she gets the hell out of here) staging a dramatic reunion with her snake of an ex-boyfriend by planting him in the front row of her show. Without telling Daisy she was going to do it. And now apparently Grant is waiting by the stage door with a massive bunch of daisies (which, ironically enough, aren’t even her favorite flower) and some manufactured apology that will last exactly as long as it takes for them to get on the cover of People.

She doesn’t have to see him. She doesn’t even want to see him. She’s Daisy Johnson, winner of three Grammys, currently on a world tour, and tapped to play the lead in Natasha Romanoff’s female-centric spin on James Bond. But she also currently lacks a getaway vehicle. So right now she’s surveying the local security hired for her concert and desperately hoping one of them moonlights as a street racer.

“How fast is fast?” one of them, a dark-haired guy wearing a leather jacket, asks.

“Fast enough to get away from the paps and my ex-boyfriend’s Ferrari,” she says and sizes him up. He’s not the tallest or burliest of the guys SHIELD security hired for this stop on the tour, but there’s something about the way he stands—shoulders back, eyes taking in everything around him, ready to move at any moment—that makes her look twice.

“Reyes,” he says. “Robbie Reyes.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Daisy,” she says automatically, the manners her aunt Melinda drilled into her kicking in. “Daisy Johnson.”

He knows who she is. (Everyone knows who she is, by now.) He says that it’s nice to meet her anyway.

She was right. Robbie Reyes drives fast. Zipping around corners, accelerating until she can feel the hum of the engine in her bones, streaking down the street so fast that she could swear they leave tire marks behind them.

“So why’d he show up in the first place?” Robbie asks as they peel around another corner, a few overeager paparazzi still racing along behind them. “Your ex-boyfriend?”

“His last movie tanked at the box office.” It was a live-action version of Monopoly. Greenlit by Bill Garrett over at Hydra Studios two months before the studio fired him and rushed into production before anyone could stop it. (Rumor had it that the movie had been his last revenge.)

“He’s very good at the grand gesture thing,” she adds. “Showing up at just the right moment, usually with cameras right behind him. Most of it was for the cameras anyway.”

“I always thought he was a pretty shitty actor,” Robbie says. “They should have killed him off in the car crash in season four instead of waiting until season seven and the rogue bobsled accident.”

“You watch Foster’s Anatomy?” She watches it with Jemma sometimes. They eat ice cream and drink wine and Jemma complains about all the medical inaccuracies but shushes Daisy whenever her favorite grumpy Scottish character appears on screen.

“My tia loves that show. She used to make me and my little brother watch it with her every time we came over for dinner. Got me hooked.”

So they talk about Foster’s Anatomy. And whether the third time is going to be the charm for Thor and Jane. And the mole his tia used to make every Sunday night and how he’s been trying to replicate the recipe to send his brother at college but he can’t get the spice blend quite right. And the fact that the last thing she cooked was bright orange Kraft mac and cheese about three months ago.

“Stop right there.” He shakes his head. “If you want really good mac and cheese, you have to bake it. Bread crumbs on top and some good gruyere.”

“Honestly, I’m not sure how my oven works.”

Then he’s laughing and she’s laughing too and it’s been forever since anyone treated her like she belonged in the same world as them and it feels good. Better than most things have in a while.

That’s when the song comes on the radio. Because of course it does. The stupid, power-chord-filled ballad that’s been the subject of endless fan theories and tabloid articles with photos of every guy she’s ever been so much as photographed next to asking if they’re the one she wrote it about. (The one that’s about a guy she never even got the chance to be photographed with.)

She flinches. He flips the dial to change the station until he finds one playing hits from the 60’s and 70’s, all guitar and smoky voices.

“Okay?”

She nods. Van Morrison is playing on the radio and they’ve left the paparazzi far behind them and rolled down the windows so the night air filters in.

The thing is, not all of her songs are all about real people. Some of them weren’t even meant to be about real people. But it makes a good story. And everyone loves a good story. She tries to explain it to him, tongue tripping as she talks about songs she wrote when she was seventeen and studio interviews where they play “name that ex” and the magazine profiles where every male writer is convinced she’s flirting with him. (She never is.) And the songs she writes now that she’s twenty-four and the girls who tell her about dancing to her music at their senior proms and the sound of the crowds when the lights first go up.

She doesn’t do a very good job of explaining it. He listens anyway.

They get cheeseburgers and fries at a twenty-four-hour diner where the waitress pretends not to recognize her and she steals half a pickle off his plate. When he gets up to take a look at the dessert case, she writes her number (her real one, the one only about half a dozen people have) on a paper napkin and stuffs it into the pocket of his jacket.

Daisy doesn’t know if he’ll call her. Or if he’ll find it. (Or even why she does it in the first place.) But some part of her hopes that he does anyway.

ABILITY

Arden’s ability first manifested when she was very young. She doesn’t remember it, but her parents certainly do. They were watching the Olympics together and when the gymnasts started to compete, Arden crawled over to the TV to get a closer look. Before her parents knew it, she was tumbling and flipping in unison with gymnasts on screen. She was only five and had never taken a gymnastics class. Her parents understood immediately what was going on, though Arden hadn’t the slightest clue. Her ability was meant to be kept a secret forever, until she figured it out herself.

Arden didn’t realize she manifested her gift until she was thirteen and was entering cheerleading tryouts and was able to copy the captain’s back flip with ease, and without any sort of experience. She started to do her own research and was eventually found out by her parents.

At the moment, it is known by the scientists in the lab that she can copy any action that she sees. Oftentimes, she will copy an action she doesn’t fully understand and while her body understands it, she won’t grasp what her body is doing. She’s described it as an out of body experience. Her body will react to an attack the best ways it knows, though Arden often isn’t aware of the movements. It’s incredibly strange to her and she’s expressed discontent with her ability on more than one occasion.

BACKGROUND

Arden Remington was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Her parents were incredibly wealthy, living off of both her father’s income from selling fire arms to the government and the residual funds that her both her mother’s and father’s family had cultivated throughout the years. Her mother’s family was involved in the oil industry and her father’s had been involved in the manufacturing and distribution of firearms for decades.

Though she was a biological only child, she was never without siblings. Ever since she was six years old, after her ability manifested, her parents would foster children that were assumed to be mutants. Arden was unaware of the fact that her parents were fostering people like her; or that she had an ability at all. Though her parents understood why Arden took to skills so quickly, she never did. Unbeknownst to her, her parents were taking their foster children to be experimented on to try to understand their daughter’s mutation better.

Though she loved all of her foster siblings, it wasn’t until her family took in Dani Larson that she got exceptionally close to one of them. Dani was everything that Arden wasn’t and Arden admired her for that. The two of them got very close, or as close as Dani’s prickly nature would allow them to. Dani’s rebellious spirit started to rub off on Arden, causing her to question her parent’s influence for the first time in her life. Dani was the only person Arden would talk to about her ability when she realized she had it.

But, of course, all good things must come to an end. Her parents tried to get the company they had been working with to experiment on Dani and Dani split. It was the first time Arden realized what her parents were doing and she was furious; but there was nothing she could do to repair the damage that they had done. But the two of them kept in touch. Dani would often contact her for bail money and Arden was more than happy to send Dani her parents’ money.

Other than her quiet acts of rebellion, Arden remained a good little girl in her parents’ eyes. She was never late, always kept her grades up, was the captain of the cheerleading team. She was their perfect little accessory, and they were always willing to show her off. She attended college for mechanical engineering, following in her father’s footsteps just as they wanted her to.

It wasn’t until the Initiative approached her father that she was aware of mutants besides her and Dani. She was overjoyed with happiness that she wasn’t alone and was quick to join. She worked through the ranks and training to become a fully fledged field agent in just a few short months. She’s the perfect little solider, though she had one request- get her sister out of prison. Dani had run into quite a bit of trouble with the law and given her gift and relation to the Remingtons, she was released to the Initiative’s custody significantly earlier than she was supposed to be.

HEADCANONS

i. Arden’s understanding of the Initiative is very limited, even though she is very involved as a field agent. She’s a good little solider that never asks questions, which the Initiative really appreciates. She has no idea what happens behind closed doors and truly believes she is helping people when it comes to “rescue” missions.

ii. Arden identities as a lesbian. She came out to her sister, Dani, when she was fourteen and Dani is the only person that is aware that she isn’t straight. Arden has yet to come out to her parents, nor would she like to.

iii. Arden has only recently realized that she identifies as a demi-woman and it is another thing that she hasn’t told anyone about. She’s not hiding it; it’s just something she’s still understanding about herself and therefore is not something she wishes to educate others about.

iv. Arden’s relationship with her parents is interesting to say the least. She adores them and follows their every order, but she doesn’t share everything with them like she used to. She didn’t appreciate Dani nearly being experimented on and knows that they can be cruel when they want to be. She doesn’t understand it and tries to make sure that they won’t cause any more pain, but there is only so much that she can do.

v. Arden is a genius when it comes to anything that has to do with weaponry. She was raised around firearms, both big and small and her father taught her how to dismantle and put together every weapon he built. Her mother taught her how to shoot when she was nine years old and, unsurprisingly given her gift, she’s been a natural ever since.

Because he’s willful problem solver, Tony had a much better relationship with his parents. Tony watched a lot of TV as a boy and realized very quickly that he and his parents weren’t doing things correctly. So, he stubbornly bullied his way into getting both the affection he wanted and crossing off a list of Things That Families Do. Which included:

Playing catch. It was boring, but he and Howard did it.

Disneyland. Howard and Maria lost him in the Hall of Presidents.

Game night. “Bridge with the ladies” got very interesting for Maria.

Dinners. There was an active conspiracy to get Howard home on time.

Routine I Love Yous. Tony: “You love me, right?” Howard: “Yes.”

(He still thought Ana and Edwin were his parents until he was four.)

Basically, Tony was a straightforward, oblivious little charmer who charmed his own parents into being the kind of parents he needed. Friendly, willing to listen, and very much a team player, Tony grew into an eccentric, well-spoken young man who inherited his father’s knack for business. Unknown to him, this solved a lot of problems before they ever started. Instead of growing frustrated to the point of attempted murder, Obadiah became a genuine part of Tony’s support structure after his parents died, and under Tony’s focused leadership, Stark Industries grew beyond weapons manufacture, becoming the third largest company in America and making Tony one of the wealthiest men alive. Stark became a trusted brand name for everything from consumer electronics to diet soda and baby shampoo. This shifts things. So does Tony’s fascination with nanotechnology. Being on good terms with Howard meant Tony didn’t grow resentful of his Captcin America stories. Instead, he was inspired by them. The idea of creating superpowers. Tony isn’t a geneticist or a biochemist, however, he’s an engineer and Better Living Through Technology isn’t just a tagline. Tony played with the idea off and on since college, but it was mostly just a hobby. At least until he was diagnosed with cancer. At first, Tony thought the symptoms (headaches, dizziness, sensory confusion) were due to his drinking and ignored them. Then in the middle of presenting a prototype for his new “exo-armor” in Afghanistan, Tony lost consciousness. Rhodey rushed him back to base where Air Force doctors discovered he had a brain tumor. Tony’s prognosis wasn’t optimistic: an inoperable tumor and only six months to five years to live. He got a second opinion and then a third, fourth, and fifth. They said the same thing. But Tony is a willful problem solver with means. The tumor was inoperable, but what if it could be removed from the inside? With the full weight of Stark Industries behind him and the support of those around him, Tony started work on creating viable nanotechnology. He and his team finally succeeded and Tony injected himself with his “nanofleet.” They didn’t work as intended. Due to some abnormalities in Tony’s blood, the nanites couldn’t tell cancerous tissue from healthy tissue. On the heels of this disappointment, Tony learned that during the confusion of his medical scare, his exo-armor had been stolen by the Ten Rings and used in an attack on the city of Gulmira. Angry and feeling like he had nothing to lose, Tony had his people help him into an updated version of the exo-armor. “Like dear old Dad, I save the best toys for myself.” And while the nanites hadn’t responded to Tony’s tumor, they did respond to the armor, allowing him to integrate into its systems. With Rhodey monitoring the battle via video feed, Tony defeated the Ten Rings and liberated the city. Unknown to Tony, he was caught on camera when he removed his helmet to talk to one of Gulmira’s citizens, Yinsen. Recognizing him from an engineering conference, and interested in his work both as a scientist and a surgeon, Tony asked for his help with his cancer. Yinsen wanted to stay in Gulmira where his family was buried, but he agreed to look over Tony’s case and eventually recommended Dr. Wu for Tony’s long term care. Saving the citizens of Gulmira gave Tony something he’d never had before: purpose. He enjoyed running the company, but it wasn’t anything he took pride in; it came too easily. When the news broke that he was “the !ron Man”, Tony began to hatch something he called The Plan. Howard used to talk about heroes and symbols and legacy. Tony didn’t feel like a hero and he was too cynical for symbols, but legacy... Yeah, he could work with that.

Personality change changes everything else.

Tony’s played by Dcvid Gandy. Recessive genes made him a blue-eyed toll. Howard made “fooled around with the milkman” jokes.

Tony involves everyone in his superheroics, from Obadiah to Pepper.

Tony still sounds ridiculous. Boarding school, you know.

Stark Industries still makes weapons, just not only weapons.

!RON MAN 2

The nanites are killing Tony. They run off his own bioelectrical current, but with his failing health, they’re needing more and more energy. The thing that’s giving his life meaning is killing him faster than the cancer.

Stress (Senate hearing, death) causes Tony to pursue an ill-advised, whirlwind relationship with “Natalie” as a distraction. (Optional)

Tony rewrites his will and makes Pepper his heir. When he dies, she’ll become the CEO of SI with the caveat that Obadiah stays on as CFO.

Tony creates a specialized armor for Rhodey: the Wcr Machine.

Tony spent his birthday drunk, but there was no fight. Just him nearly drinking himself to death. Nick Fury steps in as per the film.

Re: above, Tony breaks up with “Natalie.” (Optional)

Tony finds the answer to his power problem in Howard’s '74 Expo model.

Enter miniaturized arc reactor as power source. He builds it, installs it, incorporates it into his nanite design, and viola, he’s feeling better.

Vanko & Hammer subplot remains as do the Hammeroids. Vanko still has an axe to grind re: Howard and Hammer is a jealous prick. Vanko’s plot reaches its murder-grudge pinnacle with Tony’s shiny, new chest light.

AVCNGERS

The only real big difference: Tony and the team actually get along.

Tony and Natasha patch things up, becoming friends. (Optional)

POST AVCNGERS MINUTIA:

Tony’s not currently in a relationship unless plotted otherwise.

Re: above, Tony is deeply in love with Pepper, but à la Earth-616, neither he or Pepper quite got up the nerve to take the next step.

Tony still develops PTSD and anxiety and builds the Iron Legion.

Tony still stood Killian up in Bern, fostering his hate/supervillainy, but it was because he passed out, not because he never planned to show.

After his Malibu Dreamhouse fell into the ocean, he lives in Manhattan.

IM3 culminates with Tony using Extremis to make the suit completely internal, so he’ll never be without it again. Wrong lesson learned.

Tony learns about Bucky killing his parents, they fight as per the film, but Tony eventually realizes that Bucky is a victim, just like he and Bruce, etc., had been in AOU. Again, things are talked out like adults.

Devil's in the Details | Nemesis | Re: Doctor, Setsuna, Shinobu, Elliott, Mina ATTN: Everyone

As much as he isn't his friend's keeper, Nemesis knows a dead end when he sees one. "Médica, it's never going to be satisfying." He murmurs, hoping this can somehow get across everything - that she's right to be furious, that they'd made the wrong choice, but also that she was wasting her breath. They would never fully admit it. They couldn't. They were long past that point. There was only dissonance here. Her worldview demanded pure moral objectivity, and theirs was almost entirely subjective - Setsuna was a perfect example of that, saying that she believes and trusts in a man who has spent the last however many minutes explaining how he's lied to and manipulated all of them specifically to break them. There's something heartbreaking about her simple, willful lack of comprehension, and about her statement: I'm tired. I want to go home.

God, don't they all.

But home doesn't exist anymore. Not hers, not his. They're all a hundred years or more away from their homes, their families, their lives. The future he'd wanted for himself was lived by someone else, and now what does he have? Only the people in this room, only what's on this airship.

If he went back to Silicon now, would he even recognize it? A hundred years was more than a lifetime for most people. It encompassed generations. And of course Titan had apparently been working diligently to undo all the good work that had been done, fostering hostility and isolation, repressing advancement so they could maintain the status quo that kept them in power. The Summit was a joke, anyone with sense would know that people who had no idea what year it actually was, let alone any knowledge about the current geopolitical landscape, couldn't possibly govern effectively. Titan would have been tailoring and inventing policy for decades if not the entire century.

Shinobu's presence and his side and their hand on his back are welcome anchors. After a few minutes, contemplating in silence and listening to their words - they're good at saying what's important, what's needed, at reasonable questions and effective statements - Nemesis shifts just enough to take their hand, holding it quietly, a reciprocation of support.

He listens, and he thinks, and... Elliott mentioning the hostages briefly throws his train of thought off its tracks. The wave of nausea is abrupt and intense enough to make him breath out sharply, almost a gasp, as if he'd been hit in the chest. It certainly feels that way.

What the hell is he going to do? He doesn't want to see the copy of Marisol, some facsimile built from his memories of her, a living, breathing, real person made just to be used against him.

"How could you...?" He doesn't mean to, he doesn't want to keep talking in circles, keep the feedback loop going, he already knows there aren't going to be satisfying responses and he doesn't want to keep hearing about how hurting them all was the best choice that could be made. But he can't possibly ignore this anymore, can't possibly hold it in any longer, not now that it's been brought up again. And so it slips out, his voice is shaking, his expression blanched - not angry this time, he's too horrified for the moment for the anger to keep its grip. "How could you? After what Titan did to us, to you too, how could you... how could you do it to others? How could you do it to them? Mitsu is right, there were a - a hundred, a thousand ways you could torture us, you didn't... you didn't need to do that. You made people. Those aren't our loved ones. You brought those people to life, you created them just to use against us. Do you even understand what that means? You created life. You made them. Those are your children. You brought them into existence just to use them, like weapons, like instruments of torture. Those are people and you just- you just made them, on an impulse, with no sense of responsibility, no - nothing, just, to treat them like... And they're not safe, how could they possibly be safe? They don't even know what's happening, Titan is out there wanting to kill us all, and the lives they had and the people they knew are a hundred years gone. Did you actually think about any of this? Did you ever consider what it meant when you created them? What you'd be putting them through?"

There's a girl in the engine room who looks like the dead sister of the dead man whose memories he carries. There's a girl who will look at him and think he's her brother, even though they were both made in pods, even though she'll be lacking so much of what made Marisol who she was, because the only memories she has are the ones he could share with her - and what about the rest? Had the gaps been randomly generated? Was there some program made specifically to interpret the data of memories and manufacture more to fit in the spaces between when he'd seen her and talked to her and asked how her day went? Who is that girl? He doesn't know her, but he feels obligated to her, because she wears the face of someone he remembers loving, someone he never even met.

Nemesis wants to scream. He wants to curl into a ball and scream and scream and scream until someone just puts him out of his misery. He doesn't want to think about Not-Marisol, he doesn't want to think about the doppelganger he feels responsible for - if only because who else would be responsible for her? Who would support her, who would take care of her? She would have no one and nothing and he would be the only familiar face, even though he knows with a sickening certainty that every time he looked at hers, he would only be reminded of this fucking nightmare. Not only was his sister lost to him, stolen from him, but now she would be replaced, eclipsed by this stranger who looked and sounded like her.

It's too cruel. It's worse than anything he could ever have imagined and somehow it's reality.

He wishes they were still lying. He wishes they would say those people never existed, that it was another trick, another simulation, or holograms or robots in costumes or fucking hypnotism, anything, anything but the ugly, painful, horrifying truth.

Feeling the telltale signs of heart palpitations and his breathing getting shallow, Nemesis closes his eyes and squeezes Shinobu's hand, trying to re-center himself. He can't do this, he can't do this, he can't fall apart right now. There's still too much to talk about, too much to do. Steady, focus, breathe. Breathe.

Most of Izar's bizarre speech and uninvited physical displays go unseen, which is probably for the best, while Nemesis works on regulating his breathing and compartmentalizing until he no longer feels on the verge of another shattering panic attack.

This is exactly why he hadn't asked.

There are tears sliding down his face, but he's breathing again, he feels like he's coming up for air after being trapped a hundred leagues underwater, but slowly his thoughts are reforming and he's steadily trying to make mental grabs for the topics they need to focus on now, the things he can actually do something about.

The strongest thought he can find, the one that offers the most solid ground to stand on, is simply: Someone has to pay. Someone has to pay for this. All of it. It cannot go unanswered.

And yet, he doesn't even glance at the sword on the ground. Instead he addresses the rest of the room, everyone in it, his fellow councilors, even their captors and tormentors.

"...We can't ignore Titan. We can't just release a bunch of destabilizing information to the public all at once. Titan has been building and entrenching their seat of power for a fucking century, if we end the Summit and release all the information now, at best we'll discredit them and leave the world without any system of governance, at worst we'll be giving up any leverage and power we have and leaving Titan a vulnerable, disaster-stricken world to put back together in whatever image they want."

Nemesis doesn't want this. He doesn't want to be a lifelong politician, he doesn't want to have to save the world. But goddamn, somebody has to. Somebody has to take some fucking responsibility - in the sense of cleaning up this goddamn mess, not taking the blame for or dying over it.

"Here's my proposal. We need more information. Mina's on the right track. We need to know everything, or as much as we can. And we need advisors - consultants, whatever. This isn't just about us, it isn't just about what's happened here. It's the whole world. We should try to make contact with various administrations in as many countries as possible. See if there's a way to get them to send representatives. We should contact... hospitals, transportation officials, emergency responders. If we're going to be risking riots then we need to make sure the infrastructure doesn't collapse. And we need to defang Titan. I want to know as much about them as possible - physical locations, employee rosters, boards of directors. That ship they sent after us came from somewhere. Do we know where their armories and bases are? Can we find out? Do they use a specific communications system or hub that we can disable? Give me full access to the computers on board and anything you have regarding modern operating systems and technology, and I should be able to launch a cyberattack. If we can orchestrate a media blackout in as many countries as possible until we're finished that would be ideal. Maybe we'll need the FURIES, maybe not, but we should be fucking smart about this. I don't want to start a war, I want to stage a coup. Once everything is stable, once we can establish new committees and alternate means of international relations, then we release the whole truth. Then we tell the world everything. If you don't want to be involved, you don't have to be. Does that make sense to everyone?"

Despite the fact that his face is still covered in tears and his hands are trembling, Nem's voice is firm, certain, the anger is back and it's been sharpened and polished to a razor edge. Clean, precise, practical.

"Please. Help me if you want to, sit back and wait for the dust to settle if you don't, but vote with me now. Let me do this. I can do this."

It might be the only thing he can do, now.

Remembering the LoPresti Fury

LoPresti Fury

One of the great joys of this job used to be the opportunity to fly a little of everything. Though I don’t have that many hours or ratings, I do have nine logbooks crammed with hours and notes on flying over 310 types of aircraft in the last 50 years.

I know that credential isn’t anything special, hardly a match for my friend Barry Schiff, retired from TWA and still a contributor to several aviation magazines. Barry is up around 330 types, and many of his types are far more impressive than mine. I’d bet there aren’t many pilots who could beat his type tally.

Inevitably, I’ve been allowed to fly a few special-edition, one-of-a-kind prototypes and other airplanes that never made it into production for various reasons. Most often, the FAA’s horribly inconsistent and financially crippling certification process was just too much for many prospective manufacturers.

One design that stands spinner to tail cone above the rest as a should-have-been-but-wasn’t is the LoPresti Fury.

Roy LoPresti was the smartest man I ever knew in the aircraft design business. His credentials date back to the early ‘60s, when he worked for Grumman, assisting in the design of the Apollo moon lander, later known as the Eagle. In other words, Roy truly WAS a rocket scientist.

LoPresti led the team at Grumman that upgraded the Traveller to the Cheetah and Tiger. Then he moved to Mooney where he made a dozen aerodynamic improvements to the M20F Executive to foster the 169 knot 201 and, later, the turbocharged 231 and the intercooled 252.

The first product of LoPresti-Piper was planned to be the Fury. The airplane was loosely based on the Globe Swift of the late ‘40s, very loosely. The Fury had been upgraded in every area; granted a wider cockpit and semi-bubble canopy, a significantly modified airfoil with larger ailerons, 200 hp in place of the stock Swift’s 125 hp, a redesigned cowling with a huge cowl flap for climb, and dozens of other features that improve every aspect of the airplane.

Coincidentally, way back when, Roy and I both owned Globe Swifts, perky little taildraggers introduced in 1946 and designed aesthetically reminiscent of WWII low-wing military fighters. We both loved our Swifts, but Roy took his love several steps farther. He redesigned the entire airplane, capitalizing on the Swift’s strong points and correcting its many deficiencies. I waxed mine on weekends.

Many years later, Roy took his then-new Fury to its first public appearance at the 1988 Lakeland Sun ‘n Fun airshow and scored some 131 $10,000 refundable deposits in less than a week. Airshow pilot Corkey Fornof demonstrated the Fury every day with high-speed flybys to help keep the interest up.

With Fornof’s help over the next three years, LoPresti recorded a total of 569 deposits for the Fury.

Sadly, the timing was bad, as it turned out. Piper went bankrupt in 1991, and that signaled the end of the LoPresti-Piper affiliation and any chance of the Fury reaching full certification and production by Piper.

I flew the one-and-only Fury prototype a half-dozen times following its introduction, and the airplane was always a joy to fly. Roy was a stickler for proper control harmony, and it showed every time the Fury left the runway.

The Fury exemplified Roy’s concern for quick, coordinated integration of roll, pitch and yaw. LoPresti’s new design employed joysticks rather than yokes or side sticks, so the pilot’s view of the panel was unobstructed. (Yokes will always be the bottom choice; side sticks are next-least-liked—try to fly a side stick from the left seat with your right hand sometime—and conventional joysticks are still the favored control for sport aircraft.)

The prototype was configured with all instruments oriented for the normal left seat, but Roy hoped the airplane would attract military clients, in which case instrumentation would need to favor the right seat. (The production airplane would probably also mount a repeater power quadrant on the left sidewall for flight training.)

Roy designed the Fury flight and system controls to comply with the military HOTAS concept (Hands On Throttle and Stick). To that end, the Fury offered integrated stick and throttle control of most systems a pilot might need in flight. The stick mounted push-to-talk, electric elevator trim, transponder ident and autopilot disconnect controls. The pistol grip throttle sub-switches operated speed brakes, landing light and flaps.

The only normal takeoff and landing controls not mounted on the stick or throttle were for the gear, fuel pump, prop control and mixture. The Fury was configured very much like a miniature SIAI Marchetti SF-260 but with a tailwheel, slightly less power and no half-a-person back seat.

Roy was truly lord of the wing, and his Fury airfoil demonstrated that in spades. The Fury’s wing was significantly modified from that used on the earlier Swift. The span was the same, but the ailerons were larger, the flaps were gap sealed, stall slots on the outboard leading edge were covered over, and there were aerodynamic fences installed about halfway out on each wing. The Fury wing was wet with butt-joined skins and fully flush riveted, utilizing a single sheet of aluminum from top trailing edge to bottom trailing edge to minimize drag.

Several of my fights were photo formation hops. We would depart Vero Beach as a flight of two, remain below 3,000 feet over Florida’s Gulf Coast Barrier Islands for an hour or two, and return to Vero for a formation landing.

The Fury was a total delight for formation flying. Roll rate was about 90 degrees per second, and pitch response was well matched. The Fury wasn’t quite as agile as a Pitts, but it was damn close. The airplane was so responsive, it seemed to almost read my mind.

If photographer Jim Lawrence needed me to snuggle up or move away, step up or down, shift from left to right side, change clock position or move from echelon to line abreast, I could do so in what seemed a split second.

Not surprisingly, the Fury was a supremely agile aerobatic airplane, and Roy had planned to certify it in the acro category. Flying with Corkey Fornof in the right seat as my security blanket, I didn’t try anything too exotic, mostly just loops, Immelmanns; slow, barrel and half vertical rolls; and hammerheads and variations thereof, and there were no surprises.

Stick force per G was extremely light, just under 5 pounds, so a four G pull demanded only about 20 pounds of pressure. High-speed stall characteristics were similar to those in a P-51, though obviously lighter, a staccato buffeting that stopped with slightly reduced back pressure. The Fury obviously required a light touch, but it would have been sheer joy to get used to that.

The prototype Fury was fitted with a standard, 200 hp Lycoming IO-360-A1A, essentially the engine used on the Mooney 201. That was never envisioned as the optimum powerplant for the airplane, however. Roy always operated under the mantra “life is short—fly fast,” but he was determined to find the perfect marriage of airframe and engine on the Fury.

Unlike those of us who believe lots of power is good, more is better and too much is still barely enough, LoPresti wanted to match the Fury’s power to the airframe. Roy envisioned the optimum engine for the certified Fury might be a 260 or 300 hp Lycoming IO-540, and he had a taller vertical stabilizer on the drawing board to handle the torque of the more powerful engine.

The current airplane already climbs at more than 1,300 fpm and cruises over 180 knots. What would you expect with 30 to 50 percent more power—1700 fpm and 190 knots?

Sadly, when Roy died in 2002, so did the Fury project. Sons Curt and David tried to keep the certification effort alive, but again, the timing was wrong, and the costs were prohibitive, as always. The continuing downturn in aircraft sales and the 2008 recession pretty much spelled the end of the production Fury project.

As this is written, the sole Fury resides at the LoPresti Aviation corporate offices in Sebastian, Florida, where Roy’s sons are busy selling landing lights for corporate turboprops and jets, plus offering improved, more aerodynamic cowlings for a variety of airplanes.

Pardon the tired analogy, but if there was ever an airplane that flew like a general aviation version of a P-51, it was the Fury. I could never have afforded to buy the prototype Fury, but if I ever won a small lotto…

I don’t have nearly enough years remaining to ever stop missing Roy LoPresti, but his legacy is intact. His ultimate, two-seat, aerobatic single always was and always will remain one of the most exhilarating sport airplanes in the sky.

We figured out how to adapt air conditioning and we’ve even gone as far as buying the specialized tools necessary to rebuild an automatic transmission.

But there’s one component of car construction that makes most of us recoil in fear: upholstery. When diehards brag about how they built something, they usually do it with the following caveat: “Yup, I did everything … but the interior.”

A stigma exists about trim work, some of it warranted and a bunch of it not. Yes, upholstery requires some expensive specialty tools. But so does every other process in car construction. And yes, upholstery requires a pretty large piece of gear (sewing machine). But so does painting a car, and nobody ever bitches that their compressor is too big.

So why is upholstery so taboo? I’m going to go out on a limb here and hazard a guess: the act of sewing really intimidates us. And by us, I mean men.

No, really. Sewing has some baggage and we guys are suckers for buying into it. We’re taught early on that sewing is kinda girly. Your mom sewed patches to your jeans. Your sister sewed a dress in Home Ec. Plus a lot of us are afraid of sewing our fingers together. These fears foster a kind of noble ignorance: we’re intrigued but remain largely intimidated.

If you’re willing to overcome your fears then we have good news for you: more than fairly simple, sewing is actually really rewarding. Yeah, trim work is one of those things that’s difficult to master but at its heart it’s really not all that hard to learn.

And we’re going to show you how. And by we, I mean Jerry Glasgow at McFarland Custom Upholstery. He’s the ultimate teacher; before he took up working with award-winning trimmer Jamie McFarland, he taught would-be award-winning trimmer Jamie McFarland how to sew. In fact Jerry taught a lot of people how to sew when he instructed at Clover Park Technical College.

Over the next few months we’re going to reveal the tips and tricks that can make even someone like you and me look like we know what we’re doing. These instructions will culminate with a few big projects but it’ll be by a series of baby steps.

Now if you’re still on the fence, here’s the part that may make it all better: to do this sort of work requires an industrial sewing machine. The kind of machine dear ol’ mom used can’t pierce multiple layers of upholstery-grade materials. While the machines are really no bigger than a domestic machine, they have the power to plunge through plywood. They require a job-specific table that mounts a motor on the bottom side. People refer to them by various terms like walking-foot, unison-feed, or triple-feed. They all mean basically the same thing. Consult a sewing-machine specialist for more details. And get one that a local shop can service. Some brands come cheap because they have little support.

And while new machines can cost in the thousands, older ones turn up in the want ads for hundreds. You can even buy low-cost machines complete with tables and motors for $600. But don’t be afraid to splurge on a quality machine in known good condition; you can recoup most if not all of your investment when you’re done (provided you’re not hooked, which you may be).

We’ll jump right into this by explaining how to set up a sewing machine. It takes thread (Glasgow recommends DB-92), bobbins (he recommends pre-wound), a diamond-point needle (consult your supplier), a sharp pair of scissors, and some inexpensive vinyl remnants.

The following is the way to thread this particular machine. While it’s close for most machines, it’s not the same for all. In fact, you’re best off consulting your machine’s manual (which is almost certainly available on the market). So why show how to do it? It’s a great hook; by seeing how simple it is to thread a machine, you’re more likely to actually take the plunge and get one. Seriously, it’s easy to pick up. Even easier than MIG welding.

There’s great incentive to learn how to sew. For one, you can save a fair bit of money. For another, you control the outcome. But most of all, learn to sew and you too can brag that you did everything … even the interior.

Motors

Chances are the machine you’ll get has a clutch-type motor. In this design the motor always spins. Pressing on a foot pedal engages a clutch, which turns a pulley. A belt delivers the torque from that pulley to one on the machine.

While this is a reliable, time-honored system, it’s relatively difficult to learn. It takes a delicate touch; to sew slowly requires gently slipping the clutch and said clutch doesn’t offer much modulation. To an untrained foot, it feels like an on-off switch. And when on, the machine takes off at full speed. I’ll be honest, it’s intimidating. Trimmers take to it easily but that’s because they practice daily. It’s like riding a bike to them: automatic.

But there’s an option for the rest of us. Several manufacturers offer servomotors for $100 to $200. These motors behave identically to the motor in a homeowner machine: the motor speeds up proportionally to the amount you push the pedal, and there’s plenty of modulation. Plus many servomotors have speed limiters. That’s especially nice if you’re working very slowly and deliberately, which frankly is most of the time for anyone, seasoned professionals included. If you’ve ever had a car in for work, you know trimmers don’t make their money by how fast they go!

By and large, industrial machines consist of a machine built into a table (the woodgrain part) with a motor hung on the underside. There’s also a foot pedal below the table and a knee-operated arm that lifts the presser foot. Here’s how to thread one.

Rather than go directly into the machine, the thread passes through an eyelet in the thread stand just above Jerry Glasgow’s hand.

The spool pin holds a thread spool on a homeowner machine but it serves as a guide on an industrial. Pass the thread through the upper hole first, from back to front (toward you). Then insert the thread through the lower hole from right to left (exits toward the machine head).

Thread guides vary radically among makes and models but like the spool pin, it redirects the thread and maintains thread tension. In this case, enter both holes from the right, going top to bottom.

Loop the thread over this grooved pin then pull it down to the right of the thread tensioner. The objective is to pull the thread between the tensioner’s discs.

It’s not necessary to disassemble the tensioner to thread but it’s a good idea to clean it every so often. Plus this shows how the thread wraps around the tensioner spindle and then loops over this small pin.

This machine has a separate assembly for the take-up spring. Begin by wrapping the thread around it so it compresses the spring.

Now here’s the trick: Wrap the thread around the little hook so it emerges from the crotch.

Then pull the thread upward through the guide.

The thread then passes from right to left through the take-up lever. Then pull the thread down through the other side of the guide shown in the previous step.

Two more guides direct the thread toward the needle. They differ by make and model but they achieve the same goal.

Finally pass the thread from left to right through the needle. That concludes threading the topside.

Insert the bobbin into the case so the thread emerges pointing toward the slot and tension spring.

Now guide the thread into the slot in the bobbin case. In this design the slot makes kind of a hook. Pull it through and tug on it so it slips under the tension spring.

The thread leaves the bobbin case by this little notch. Pull the thread up through it and maintain enough pressure on it to keep it from slipping out.

Machines differ wildly by bobbin installation. This machine lays the bobbin flat. Drop it in while keeping the thread in that little notch.

Grasp and gently pull on both threads while manually rolling the machine forward. This effectively threads the machine—at this point you can sew.

Glasgow recommends finding a machine with what’s often referred to as a high-lift foot. While not absolutely necessary, it makes it easier to feed a machine with several thicknesses of material.

Feed two layers of material into the machine and drop the presser foot. Prior to sewing, maintain a slight bit of pressure on the threads to keep them engaged within the machine.

There are two ways to terminate a stitch. For one, stop sewing just short of the piece’s end and pull the piece loose enough to cut the threads. The problem is that you have to hold the threads as above when you restart.

Instead, Glasgow recommends terminating the stitch in a piece of scrap and cutting the threads between it and the sewn piece. Then, when you start your next stitch, you can go from the scrap to the material. Just never let the machine operate without material in it.
