Hey there, definitely not gonna ignore. And don't be sorry about the heavy topic. I'm genuinely glad you asked this question and it's something that had been weighing heavily on my mind before I decided to finally make content for the character I've had in mind for so long.

Gonna start by introducing Quetzalli and what it means for someone like this in the Arcana world. Because it's a fictional universe, there's no such thing as Mexica. Same goes for all other canon characters, we know the cultures they were influenced by, but the people don't actually exist in this world. But I absolutely love that characters do have influence from our real world cultures and I wanted to share that of my ancestors because all of our cultures have a right to influence fiction just as much as any other. And when I realized Nopal is influenced by modern day Northern Mexico/Southwest US, I felt so happy to think people inspired by ours could exist in this world because they're ignored in every other fantasy.

One other good example I can think of is Avatar the Last Airbender which has nations and people inspired by real-world cultures. Inuit, Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetan cultures are among them yet even then there are other elements and no one nation is strictly influenced by one culture alone nor do they completely mirror them. I was also happy to notice that the Sun Warriors were primarily influenced by Mesoamerican civilizations including Mexica, Incan, and Mayan with some Southeast Asian influences as well. On the other hand there are movies like the Road to El Dorado that has established itself in a real-world setting and so I’d be very strict on how the culture is represented. 

As you probably figured, Quetzalli is influenced by the Mexica (Aztec) culture as it used to be before La Conquista. And the Mexica as the people they were haven't existed since then, but instead have changed with time. Yet I've grown up surrounded by their legacy and that of the Chichimeca people in my town in Mexico, particularly the Zacatecos, Caxcan, and Guachichil (Quetzalli's mother is influenced by Chichimeca peoples who would likely be placed in the Catclaw desert in the Arcana world). But honestly, what has pissed me off so much is the way our people are seen and treated. Even many people in Mexico are racist and still look down upon those of indigenous descent. But we should be proud and I wanted to create a character who is proud, brave and powerful because that's what I feel like when I embrace that part of me. Thus Quetzalli was born!

But integrating the character into the Arcana universe is tricky. There are many elements that I could keep and some that I couldn't because not everyone will understand some concepts. Death is a tricky subject and even in the Arcana universe, it's heavily influenced by western concepts of death in which death is like some ultimate scary thing and that's that. While of course I don't take death lightly, even as a child it wasn't ever truly scary. I was raised to believe it's a cycle and death is not feared but honored and respected. So when I was taught about Mexica sacrifice as a kid (most people only know about sacrifices like some bs to justify la Conquista while there’s SO MUCH good shit like public education and genius engineering)  although I don’t agree obviously, it makes sense to me because I could understand how a people would view it as a cycle that must continue. The sun rises and falls, seasons change, people die, people are born. Even enemy war captives who have a sliver of divinity that allowed the capture. It's all a cycle where life and divinity must be returned in order for it to be given back. There was never enough blood to give to everyone that is and will ever be and so much be returned.

This is one of the things I'm leaving out in Quetzalli because it's a delicate subject that I know people won't understand. And because she's a fictional character only influenced by the Mexica in a fantasy world, I feel okay leaving the bloodshed out (also people might vilify her and the Mexica people for it like they already do). If I was to make her a character in a real world scenario, then nope, I'll need to be strict and include everything whether everyone likes it or not. Other things about her that I've stretched is the fact that she's an Eagle Warrior. Although women had more independence over their work and finances (compared to many European women at the time) and that it was believed women could be powerful leaders (depicted in stories and history) they weren't allowed in combat, at least in the last 200 years of the empire. I'm not counting the time women joined the struggle under Huey Tlatoani Cuauhtemoc because that was a desperate last stand.

But if you read my short story "the game begins" it's known that Quetzalli cannot become a warrior and thus will listen to Huehuecoatl in hopes he'll help her get there. Another thing I stretched is her coliseum outfit. I wanted to incorporate some essential parts of the Eagle Warrior's uniform: the greaves, the chimalli, and especially the cuacalalatli and feathers lining the leather so she may embrace the eagle's fighting prowess. Those parts are there but I also wanted to keep in with the theme of the Arcana coliseum outfits in that they are very revealing and made for show over function as we've seen with Julian and Asra. I also wanted to share the cuacalalatli and I think the idea of embracing an animal's prowess is beautiful in that one looks up to nature to feel strength.

I try to add Mexica elements where I can because I love to share more and so few people know about Mesoamerican cultures. But I also try to keep it on the same level as the other Arcana characters who show their real-world cultural elements while not making that everything there is to know about them. I want her to still feel apart of this world and story, she’s a character like all the others. So sometimes I’m limited to clothing, tools and weapons, language, flowers and plants, motifs, her hummingbird familiar, even the appearance of the “Ascending Eagle” but I think references to our world’s Tonatiuh is as far as I can go while maintaining Arcana universe. 

But to summarize what I feel about it. Indigenous american cultures are widely ignored among Arcana apprentices and I honestly feel that we should not feel ashamed to include them, especially if they're our own. And I do understand the feeling of not wanting to misrepresent cultures, it IS important to avoid stereotypes even if it's a fantasy setting. Also one thing some forget is that indigenous people are PEOPLE like everyone else and have every right to exist in media. We don't have to adhere to every aspect of our culture nor should we be ashamed and hide it away. Quetzalli is influenced by Mexica but she's a normal person in this world with every right to be there like any other character, wear her clothes, speak her language, get upset, be sensual, kick some ass, hate and love... None of this says any less of her or her culture. 

The things I've included in her has been a monument to the power she feels and that of the people she's influenced by, the same pride and power I feel when I embrace my roots. It took me a while to finally get around to sharing her, but I'm glad I am. Thank you so much for this ask.

So some time ago I had a kind of weird Tangled dream... and it turned into a theory... I won’t tag for spoilers since it IS all just a hypothesis but if you don’t like them then I might suggest you keep scrolling just in case.

Before you start reading though, keep in mind that if you think I ship these two in ANY way that is inappropriate for their current ages or Disney in general, I will PERSONALLY put together a large southern gospel choir to knock on your front door and sing you a very loud and glorious “NO.” I don’t even ship Rapunzel and Eugene that way and we KNOW they get married. SO WIPE THAT FROM YOUR THOUGHTS RIGHT NOW!! THIS. STAYS. INNOCENT.

After I had noticed how many parallels there were between Rapunzel and Eugene with Cassandra and Varian (both in Great Expotations and in general: EX. both involve an older character that starts out rather cynical and guarded who began life as an orphan then slowly lets down their defenses with the younger, perky, passionate, creative, buck toothed, freckled, son/daughter of some influential leader, (that’s not even all of the similarities) and if Eugene really IS 26 and that’s what the show seems to be suggesting with him appearing with his adult design in a flashback that takes place 8 years prior, and if Cass IS 22 as I suspect she is, then that would mean they have the EXACT same age gap and all four characters are four years apart from each other). I... don’t think that’s sheer coincidence. Along with what could be read as possible foreshadowing (Ex. Andrew calling Cassandra “Cassie” in an episode set immediately after Great Expotations and “venomous cobra man” is a lot more suiting now than it used to be, etc.), I started to wonder if maybe it was possible that they could end up someday, being a foil pair to our romantic leads?

I didn't think much of it at first because I’ve been way off on predictions before, I wasn’t in full favor of shipping them yet, and I thought I could simply be misreading and the parallels are all just coincidence until the very night that this occurred to me, I dreamed of the episode 'What the Hair?!' and everything was the same except when everything came crashing down the dialogue was switched so it was now Cass and Varian saying Raps and Eugene's lines and even making the same expressions, holding hands etc. but they were still in the same locations that they actually were on the show (I've had a lot of theories for a lot of shows but as far as them making it into my dreams, this is a first).

I woke up very confused because I thought it was canon and was wondering why fans weren't paying any attention to it. You'd think they'd be losing their minds! After I woke up a little more I thought...

"Wait! That never happened! It couldn’t have! 1.) 14 and maybe-20-something? They can't get away with that! This is Tangled, not The Garden of Words! 2.) They just met like five minutes ago! YEESH! That’s fast even by Disney fairytale standards!!"

^^^That boy's face says "I LIKE you, but not in a 'You mean the world to me' kind of way, more like a 'Wow, I just noticed how attractive you are. Are you free this Friday?' kind of way."^^^

I almost outright dismissed it as disturbingly nonsensical but didn’t because the more and more I thought about it, the more the possibility of them ending up together at some point down the road actually started to not only seem plausible... but actually make perfect sense for a LOT of reasons!

Think about it! First off, if the show itself is centered around Rapunzel and Eugene's romance then wouldn't you expect any secondary relationship on the show to be just that? A foil? A complimentary opposite? Classical music vs Rock and Roll? The very earliest they could really even suggest that Cass maybe starting to reciprocate or that she could someday have romantic feelings for Varian would probably be at the very end of the show when he is likely to be more matured both physically and emotionally and all conflicts have been resolved. This would also explain why it seems like it's always hinted at that Cass could have a romantic interest in the future, but a real one hasn't been introduced yet (at least not one that we'd recognize right away). This also makes sense in that the crew behind the show might not want to develop another romance on-screen and risk overshadowing the main pair with new characters.

"Besides, I don't have time for dreams. My dad taught me at a very young age to focus on the here and now." - Cassandra in Cassandra v Eugene.

I read her keeping the rose Andrew gave her at the end of Under Raps (especially after her earlier expression of distaste in the idea of romance) as her saying "Yeah, the whole thing was a total charade, but I actually kind of enjoyed it and I might not be opposed to having a REAL romance with someone SOMEDAY."

Ways that they would be a foil could probably include how it takes years for them to develop into anything romantic rather than just a day or two, it’s an older girl with a younger guy rather than the other way around, nocturnal animal friends vs diurnal which I pointed out in a linked post above as part of a sun vs moon motif (I've noticed a lot of background imagery tying Cassandra to the moon so there's some theory fuel for ya), and how, while we already know that Rapunzel and Eugene live happily ever after, almost NOTHING is certain about the future for Cassandra and Varian at this point in time like whether or not they’ll even end up still being friends. Neither of them are in the Ever After short so there's that too.

Something else I noticed is when this show tends to emphasize something, it seems like it is subject to change and contrast seems to be a major theme in this show. ( @starxapple ) As ‘Kevin’ pointed out, Varian’s cuteness/sweetness was very played up in the first episode and he called out how this meant Varian would became a villain. By that logic, it’s really played up on how Varian is a kid and, accordingly, how Cassandra sees him as such. Varian isn’t an adult, but he isn’t exactly a child either. He’s an adolescent in that confusing and emotionally turbulent stage right in between. He’s old enough to be held responsible for his actions, but not necessarily mature enough to take that responsibility himself.

This to me suggests that we will most likely get to see him really grow up on this show, backed up by the fact that it is set over a few years and no doubt Varian is FAR from a static character with a great deal of potential for growth.The whole point of his character might be to make a point about maturity and at what point should someone be truly considered an adult? 18 isn’t just some magical age when someone goes from naive kid to wise grown up because, in reality, people mature at different rates and it all depends on individual experiences. Someone lacking emotional maturity enough to be honest about their own faults and limits definitely wouldn’t be ready for a serious romance with anyone, much less an older person like her.

(My friend, Chi and I both explained why the fact that they meet before he is an adult isn’t really a problem in this post here. In fact, if they ever WERE to become a romance in the future, it would actually be essential for SOME emotional connection to be made BEFORE he became a villain for the reasons stated.)  Sorry if this chart is hard to decipher but hopefully my earlier explanation helps it to make sense.

When the show is nearing its end, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started playing up how Varian has grown up (a lot taller, more responsible, calling Eugene by his real name, they may give him facial hair etc). This growth may also be emphasized by Cassandra’s view of him changing from ‘kid friend’ to 'dangerous enemy' then finally to ‘potential romantic interest’ at some point in the future. By the time the show is over, Varian should be at least around 16-17 which (again if I’m right about Cass’s age) would place them both at only slightly younger than Rapunzel and Eugene were in the movie so I wouldn’t be too surprised if the possible foreshadowing became a lot clearer near the end, like the bouquet at Raps and Eugene’s wedding landing in Cassandra’s hands and her realizing that Varian happens to be standing right next to her.

Of course I don’t expect any kind of confirmation or denial on this outside future episodes since, again, that would be a massive spoiler if it were true, but it’s still very interesting to think about.

Also this makes me wonder what other Rapunzel/Eugene things they might paralle--?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! DON'T YOU DARE!!

But... DANGFLABBERGASKIT that ALSO kinda makes sense!! We've seen twice already that Varian feels an impact whenever Cassandra saves his life. The first time likely being what caused him to start crushing on her to begin with (seeing as how before that point, if anything, he was probably more intimidated by her and otherwise didn’t pay much attention to her at all in favor of the princess and his believed-to-be-hero) and the second time he voiced how it moved him that she chose him over her guard duties to Dr. St. Croix. This is purely guessing but how much do you think it would impact him if she got HURT saving him a third time even after EVERY terrible thing he did and in the same way that caused his dad to get encased in the first place?

I've seen other redemption arcs for other characters and it's not uncommon for their turn around to be triggered by the hero(ine) making a selfless act on their behalf despite everything they did. In fact, if they HADN'T done such terrible things, the scene where they apologize would be nowhere NEAR as powerful. Storytelling 101. If Yukine’s stealing a skateboard didn’t contribute to his friend facing painful death and his careless disregard for that fact didn’t happen then his weeping/screaming apologies would have come off as a bit overkill rather than emotionally powerful. 😝

And since there are no more healing powers and Cass isn't in the Ever After short, the stakes are high enough that it could still have a huge impact on the audience as well. Not to mention what it would say about Cassandra's growth as a character since it's emphasized in Not In The Mood that the area she could use the most growth in is compassion.

Both of their individual relationships with Rapunzel are the ones that get the most focus, which is fitting since she's the main character, so I'd be hard pressed to imagine that she isn't directly involved in some way.

GAAAAHHHH HAVE MERCY!!

For those who argue that what he felt for her was a puppy crush, I’m not going to say that isn’t the case but here’s the thing. After Varian becomes a villain, it’s pretty obvious that he no longer feels the same affection for Cassandra that he did before. If he did, safe to say he probably wouldn’t have tried to crush her. This is emphasized by how he calls her Cassandra when ‘Cassie’ was clearly meant as an affectionate nickname for her. If there was a puppy crush, it’s most likely gone already. Whoosh! Bye-bye! This would leave room for more mature feelings to become a new foundation after a redemption arc. A relationship built more on that common connection they shared in Great Expotations, rather than an action she took that may or may not really mean anything.

I can actually imagine this all happening and when the show is over, we'd be hearing things from the production team like "This was the idea all along. We didn't just decide to throw them together halfway through because people seemed to like it enough, it was always going to be part of the story. Just like how we always knew Varian would become a villain, when the episode What The Hair?! was being written, we already knew how it would end with these two."

Huh... this would actually put my dream into perfect context if true. After all, it is a complete story and Chris has said that the course of each characters' story has been planned out from the beginning. There is freedom for the writers but the backbone was set before casting, character designs etc.

I'll be honest, I wasn't that surprised to hear that it sounded like there WAS an answer but I wasn't going to get it directly from him. The fact that it seems implied that SAYING Cassandra’s age could potentially be a sort of spoiler leads me to wonder if this might be why? I mean, it is assumed that Cass is somewhere between Rapunzel and Eugene in age. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but why bother with not having a clear, direct answer, instead suggesting that it will be hinted at, unless there was real significance behind the exact number? I wonder if by "hints" he means more flashbacks since, again, The Return Of Strongbow seemed to hint at Eugene's age.

With all that said, I am 100% in favor of us getting to the series finale and having Varian acknowledge that he is STILL NOT ready for a real relationship with Cassandra just yet for two reasons. One, it would show how much he has matured with him being able to recognize that he isn’t emotionally prepared for something, and two, it would be another Rapunzel/Eugene parallel with the series premiere where Rapunzel tells Eugene that she isn’t ready to settle down and marry him just yet. I would expect Cass’s response to parallel Eugene’s with her now more developed patience and understanding giving him time to catch up with her.

All in all, I see the possibility of a romance between Cassandra and Varian as being like an acorn. Someday, after years of growth, it could be a beautiful oak.

But for now it's just nuts.

Yes, I know shipping slow burn romances is torture but because I’ve managed to convince myself that their chances of being canon in the future are actually pretty good, I signed myself up. *Puts on helmet* Bring on the pain.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie review

Back in 2015, The Force Awakens brought Star Wars back to the big screen by introducing us to the new characters that would be carrying the saga into the future. It operated mainly on laying the groundwork for what was to come. Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Kylo (Adam Driver) all showed the potential of this new story was vast, but whether it could all pay off was always down to whatever writer/director Rian Johnson managed to do with Episode VIII.

With The Last Jedi, he’s managed to craft a tale that goes beyond any expectations. This movie isn’t about any major plot twists, reveals or simply moving the overarching plot along, it’s about exploring the place these new characters are forging for themselves in the galaxy. It takes the legacy of Star Wars and makes exploring what legacy means one of its central themes. It’s about what The Resistance is fighting for in their struggle against The First Order. This is the most human movie to ever come out of Star Wars, a story that explores the importance of hope in the darkest of times. There’s so much going on in this movie that I barely know where to start, but it all comes together to form something uniquely its own.

For the first time in Star Wars history, The Last Jedi picks up immediately where The Force Awakens left off. Even though The Resistance managed to destroy Star Killer Base last time, The First Order is still using their vast resources to go after them and snuff out the one obstacle keeping them from total galactic conquest. What’s left the Resistance fleet are running on what little power they have against First Order Star Destroyers capable of tracking them through lightspeed. General Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) manage what little resources they have left until they find a way to signal for help. Meanwhile, Finn and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), a Resistance maintenance operator, work together to find a way to stop the First Order from tracking them while Poe tries to buy them as much time as possible.

During all of this, in the far reaches of the galaxy, we also pick up with Rey as she’s meeting Luke Skywalker (Mark Hammill) and tries to convince him to return with her to the Resistance so they can save the galaxy. Rey’s journey in this movie mainly concerns her looking for someone to give her meaning so that she’ll finally know where she belongs after a lifetime of solitude. Luke’s more concerned in his own interrupted isolation than he is with defeating The First Order or showing Rey the ways of the Force. He’s grown to resent his own legend as a Jedi and is determined to die alone as the last of their kind. All he can think of while talking to Rey is how he failed Kylo Ren and that he never wants that to happen again. He doesn’t believe the Jedi should own the Force, because the Force is not a power that belongs to anyone but the thing that binds all life in the galaxy together. Hammill brings a strength to this performance that sheds new light on one of the iconic heroes of movie history.

Rey’s personal arc concerns her search for belonging. She wants to be shown who she is and what to do with that. Now that she’s discovered the Force as it exists in side her, she believes it must mean something greater that connects her to everything else going on. She wants a destiny, prophecy or anything to tell her the “why” of how she ended up where she is now. When Luke refuses to give her that, she starts to sense something she hadn’t before. A connection between Kylo Ren and herself start to develop and she takes that as a sign that there’s something they are meant to do together. They discuss their respective connections and experiences with the Force together and how they ended up where they are in life. The more they talk the more Rey believes there’s something more to Kylo and that he has a chance to be Ben Solo again, while Kylo believes Rey will eventually succumb to the call of the Dark. Eventually, she’s able to find her way towards understanding how to forge a path for herself without anyone needing to tell her about it. All she needs by the end is to know who she is as part of the Force and that will help her carry on the legacy of the Jedi in her own way.

The story of the Resistance fighters as they try to find a way to escape The First Order’s pursuit is a story of desperation. Poe, Finn and Rose are all looking for a way to win against all odds during The Resistance’s darkest hour. Poe Dameron was the least fleshed out of the new main cast during The Force Awakens, now The Last Jedi gives us insight into his approach to the fight and how that changes over the course of the movie. He’s willing to strike powerful blows against the enemy no matter the cost to The Resistance and early in the movie, that cost is heavy. His cocksureness puts him in immediate conflict with Admiral Holdo. She wants him out of the way to make sure his brazen attitude doesn’t cost them any more than it already has. Over the course of Poe’s conflict with her over this, he ends up seeing what these superior officers need to do to make sure the spark of hope can keep shining. Oscar Isaac does a lot with this material to bring new depth to who Poe is beyond “the best pilot in The Resistance.”

Finn and Rose’s story to find someone to help the Resistance escape takes them to a planet of gambling and drinking where the rich elites of the galaxy live in the lap of luxury with the privilege of not having to acknowledge the conflict going on or worry about the possibility of The First Order’s encroaching rule. Kelly Marie Tran as Rose brings an immediately compelling new perspective to the war going on in these movies. Rose grew up on a planet that was subjugated by The First Order and she sees the hedonism on display as an extension of the cruelty that she lived under growing up. The people on that planet grew rich by war profiteering, selling weapons to both sides and then drinking the night away without a care for the consequences. Finn sees through her perspective how war creates suffering beyond the immediate casualties of battle and understanding what The Resistance means aside from “the people who fight The First Order.”

On the other side of the conflict, Kylo finds that he’s lost his favor with Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) after his defeat on Starkiller. Kylo’s getting further away from the dark master he aspires to become, and he blames Rey for it. He wants to rise above and become someone who strikes fear into everyone’s hearts the way Darth Vader did. There’s a desperation to destroy any remnants of who Ben Solo was so that he can find what he’s meant to become. While the movie let’s Adam Driver portray Kylo as a conflicted figure, especially as he explains why he’s chosen this path, it also never let’s us forget that he’s a villain and his actions are all well within his control.

Snoke’s presence in the movie is used as a marker of a constant threat, since his Star Destroyer is the main one tracking the Resistance fleet over the course of the story. He obviously serves a similar role to the Emperor in the original Star Wars trilogy as the grand master and manipulator behind the main bad guys our heroes are fighting. However, The Last Jedi finds a couple ways to subvert that archetype that’s exemplary of a motif in the movie flaunting of not letting the audience get too comfortable thinking they know exactly what’s going to happen in these new movies.

The Last Jedi plays around with audience expectations in a way that never feels like it’s trying to totally subvert what Star Wars is at its core. It starts doing this from the moment Luke takes back his lightsaber from Rey only to immediately throw it away behind him without saying a word to her. That’s early in the movie and exemplary of how the rest of it plays. The more the movie goes on, the more moments like this pile up and it’s all with a purpose. The theme of this movie is the necessity of new generations to learn from the old, but more importantly how it’s necessary to move passed that and forge something new. To paraphrase how one old character puts it, a master’s duty is to make sure the student grows beyond them. Tradition and dogma are only stepping stones to forging an identity or making a difference in life. All of this comes together especially well in some gorgeously composed final sequences, courtesy Johnson and Director of Photography Steve Yedlin.

Rian Johnson and the crew behind The Last Jedi craft a look for everything in the movie that expands what a Star Wars movie can be visually. The new creatures we meet, including the puffin-like porgs and some crystalline foxes, are well put together blends of CGI and practical effects with behaviors that breathe life into the settings where they’re found. The sets are put together to set the mood of their scenes well and serve as tableaus for some incredible moments, including the casino planet mentioned earlier, Snoke’s throne room and the planet where the final battle of the movie takes place, where bright red minerals are covered by a layer of white salt.
