Ah, this COVER. Its SO SPARKLY. I found this vinyl first and then immediately knew how I wanted to use it. Its got glitter in it, so it did make laying the cover out quite a task. I had a few versions of the cover in my head, and pulled the scope of it back SIGNIFICANTLY - but I think this is perfect for this fic.

I did have to fussy cut every red peace out and iron them on individually. Never again l o l.

Typeset for this was very simple. Header bands and a complementary drop caps color - red and blue. I also matched the page breaks to whoever's POV, as well as alternating page number graphics. Simple and clean.

Headbands. I...I don't want to talk about the headbands.

This was also the first time i figured out how to do the fucking cover boards. It took QUITE a while, and i still don't get it right half the time - but the crease and the spine and the board with? Started cooking here.

If you haven't read this fucking classic Stony fic, I recommend. The pure idiots to lovers here is mouthwatering, mixed with the classic good 616 comic content - i hope ya'll hop over and read this. Thanks to the lovely Dr Amuly for being cool about me binding their work <3

succession fic rec list

In honour of succession s4 coming out, I thought I’d make a list of my favourite succession fics. These are all either romangerri or tomgreg, but other characters tend to feature fairly prominently. I’ve split these fics up into two categories: missing moments in canon and fix-it fics. The first category features fics that stick closely to the events of canon and are true to the tone of the show. The latter includes fics that try and give the characters more functional and healthier relationships, and are more optimistic. Fics with an asterisk are my personal favourite.

missing moments in canon

the nutcracker [M] by @thefudge [1,218 words] - “Roman. Behave.” (or Gerri and Roman see The Nutcracker. Holiday prompt). 

This fic would fit right in with one of the early s2 episodes, it nails their dynamic from that era perfectly. It’s a romangerri classic: sexual-but-not-really-sexual contact, and its super hot. A must-read.

Must Be Love [T] by @everybodyilovedies [2,719] - On the plane ride back from Tuscany, Kendall and Roman get some time alone to talk about dickpicgate, and the woman at the (attempted) receiving end of it. 

Even if you aren’t a romangerri shipper, I would recommend this fic just for the hilarious dynamic between Kendall and Roman. The author manages to tease the possibility of a reunion between Roman and Gerri, while also staying true to the events of canon. 

the true encounter [M] by wellprince [1,354] - “Hell yeah he is,” Roman says. “He’s about to splash his cum all over this great white nation of ours. And I’m the invisible hand behind the handjob. Look, you’d love him if you met him.” That’s probably not true. Gerri doesn’t love anyone. Whatever. 

This fic is the perfect coda to ep 3.06. Not only is it really well-written, it also functions as a great analysis of Roman’s character, his sexuality issues and explores what pulls him towards both Mencken and Gerri.

**You Could Make a Killing [M] by gaycoruscant [3,633] -  After watching Logan slap Roman, Gerri struggles with conflicting loyalties. 

This fic explores the contradictions of Gerri’s relationship with Roman and her support of his father. Gerri is beautifully written - she’s multi-faceted, and the author does a really good job getting into her head. The writing is beautiful, and there’s a delicious tension between Roman and Gerri throughout. 

fix-it fics

live near your fire as winter blows [E] by @alittledizzy [10,047] - Roman invites Gerri to a cabin in the Catskills and they manage to work through some (not all, but some) of their shit. 

Roman and Gerri get their shit together in a way that feels very in-character. I especially enjoy how the author has handled the age gap - this fic does not shy away from the fact that Gerri is an older woman, which makes both her character and the sex scene feel really natural and authentic. 

Ring the Bells That Still Can Ring [E] by moreculturelesspop [1,800] - Roman considers fatherhood and an alternative life with Gerri. 

This fic is exactly what I imagine the inside of Roman’s head sounds like. It’s very well-written and presents a really interesting study of Roman’s views on parenting and his feelings towards Gerri. Fantastic Roman POV.

holiday [T] by @dollsome-does-tumblr [2,107] - Gerri steals Roman away for breakfast on the last morning in Tuscany. Set after 3.09. 

If you’re worried about what will happen to Roman and Gerri in s4, or still hurting after the s3 finale, read this fic. This fic gives a real sense of closure to the events in Italy and still leaves open the possibility of a reunion in the future.

missing moments in canon

**the old way with the sledge [M] by @round-thedecay [4,390] - Tom takes care of Greg, with many layers of bargaining, withheld information, and slaughterhouse imagery in between. Meanwhile: Tom's marriage will be a slow death.

I can literally hear Tom and Greg’s voices in my head as I read the dialogue in this fic. Even though Shiv only shows up at the end, she feels like such a presence throughout this fic. Both her character and relationship with Tom are really well-handled.

Subterranean Homesick Blues [M] by @envius [9,077] - After a month of separation, Tom gets everything he thought he wanted.

The author really understands the dynamic between Tom/Greg and Tom/Shiv, with both relationships feeling balanced and in-character. This is MY s4, so no matter what happens in the show, I know I’ve always got this fic. 

Three Legs [E] by @neroxsporus [6,603] - Tom and Greg celebrate Greg's moving up. It's hard to say who gets more out of it.

Excellent coda to ep 2.04, where Greg uses Tom as a human footstool. This fic nails the weird, homoerotic aspects of their relationship and explores the culture of toxic masculinity and power at Waystar. Very funny and in-character.

**Saturn's Stomach [M] by baffledbear [6,549] - Things take a turn for the worse when Logan invites Tom and Greg on a secluded hunting trip in Virginia. Deep in the wilderness and with nowhere else to run, the pair must rely on each other in order to survive a deadly game.

This fic feels like it is written by someone who really understands Tom’s arc and what the narrative is trying to convey. The ending is incredibly satisfying, tying in many of the themes from the show. The relationship between Tom and Greg develops in a really plausible manner, and while they are endgame, Tom and Shiv’s relationship is still incredibly meaningful throughout. 

fix-it fics

put your money where your mouth is tonight [E] by asphaltworld [6,964] - Greg smokes and tries to think of what to do, like, with his life in general. 

Greg loves being a sugar baby: The fic. This is a very plausible take on Greg’s character, and the author does a really good job delving into Greg’s POV and his thoughts on Tom. This is a fun, lighthearted read that fits in well with the end of s3.

Summary: When Nicolo becomes immortal, he knows there must be a reason behind it. So he begins a search through time and space to find his answers. Yusuf tags along with him, because like it or not, their fates are clearly intwined. (and then, eventually, they fall in love, so that’s a good reason too).

Love Letter:

I've never read anything by Amuly , and I almost didn't read anything by them at all. I had just finished reading a really awful piece where dubious consent doesn't even cover it  when I stumbled on to their writing. Ladies, gentlemen, people who identify as other....this author wrote the coming together of two people in the most subtle manner using mostly mathematics. I am not a math person, but when a truly romantic person only has mathematics to express themselves, the words that happen are so staggeringly creative.  

Throughout the text, we are constantly told that Nicolo is horrible at picking up new languages while Yusuf kind of inhales Greek and exhales Hebrew, wash, rinse, repeat with any new language. This is vital because Nicolo is on a quest to find the answer to a very simple question: God, what is it exactly that you would like me to do with all this immortality you have given me? So while Nicolo is amazing at math and uses his skills in math repeatedly (almost like in Night Vale's Condos )to find their way in the world, he would not be able to take any steps forward in his personal quest without Yusuf. It's also clear that for Yusuf, the answer to the question is simple. What to do with all that immortality? Love this man, and do the good work of helping people who cannot help themselves as we go forth--for the greater glory of God.

It's beautiful--and infuriating--reading Nicolo not get that simple idea for decades. While walking through sandstorms rescuing children, drowning in sand, in water, carrying children through jungles, helping the defenseless and the poverty stricken--doesn't matter Yusuf can't draw it in crayon plainly enough for Nicolo. His obsession grows and almost becomes a sorrow--but Yusuf will not allow it to consume him. Additionally, Nicolo is, of course, to within everything they are doing to see the bigger picture. Clearly a repeat of the film's idea, but this feels like the genesis of Nicolo's ethos that informs the movie.

And while the romantic moments are soft and not the main focus, when Amuly decides to do it, THEY DO IT

“Nicolo di Genoa: I would follow you through the seven gates of Jahannam and back, beyond the greatest seas and beneath the deepest caverns. I would build a tower to the moon and trek over its quintessent mountains, build a ship with sails made for navigating the celestial ether and pluck the stars from their firmament, all if you commanded it.”

“Yusuf,” Nicolo sighed. He cupped his hand to Yusuf’s cheek, heart breaking with the love he saw written across every line of his face. Yusuf covered Nicolo’s hand with his own. “I would never command you.”

“My love for you commands me,” Yusuf proclaimed.

Or in another part of the work 

“Do not say such things about yourself, my love, my soul, my heart. How could you ever think you burden me? That I am not here because I will it? Your body is my body, your soul is my soul. If your mind is burdened then my mind is burdened, and my feet walk with your feet until both our minds are put to ease.”

“But you have your answers,” Nicolo insisted, trying just one more time. “You said, decades ago: Allahu Akbar.”

“Allahu Akbar,” Yusuf agreed. He pressed a lingering kissing to Nicolo’s forehead before pulling back to meet his eyes again. “Nicolo: every day, you do the work of God’s greatness on Earth, because every day you do good. How could I ever want to be somewhere other than basking in the reflected glow of divine goodness made manifest?”

And there is more you guys.  There is so much more to love in this set. So far, after looking at Amuly's Ao3 page, I can see that they usually only do a handful of stories for any fanbase. I burned through all of them for Nicky and Joe in a day, and couldn't be happier. Trust me, take the weekend, use your day off and read these. You will love them.

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

in no particular order:

@femmequixotic. i swear to fucking g-d. look. look, this writer has an obscene amount of fics and yet every single one of them is widely or quietly different. that’s really fucking hard to do in fiction, especially when you’re writing for the same pairing over and over again. literally millions upon millions of words, and in every single story, harry and draco are two very different, very unique characters that cannot be confused between other fics femme’s written. it’s obscene how talented this author is, and if you’re a fan of drarry, check femme out.

@sabrecmc. the characterisation with sabre’s fics is ridiculous, i swear. i’d be jealous if i wasn’t so damn impressed. characterisation is so important when you’re doing fanfic (unless your goal is ooc characters, which is perfectly valid), and how sabre writes characters -- specifically tony stark -- is utterly ridiculous. plus sabre is a huge fan of encouraging other writers, pushing for reblogs/likes and comments on people’s content, and is generally an amazing human being. if i’m being perfectly honest, sabre scares the ever-loving shit out of me for so many reasons.

@everybodyilovedies. environment is crazy important with fic, be it au fics or canonical bits. amuly creates the richest of environments, regardless of fandom and pairing, and you get sucked into the story like it’s literally something you’re living in. that’s a powerful gift for an author, and i’m in awe of amuly’s talent in this regard. also?? spot-fuckin-on with characterisation too, it’s ridiculous.
