Please don’t use midjourney it steals art from pretty much every artist out there without any compensation. I didn’t know this at first and tried it but then during the creation process i saw water marks and Getty image logos (though I’m sure they’ve hidden that now) so it’s definitely stealing.
No, it isn't. And you've taken the wrong lesson from the Getty watermark issue.
AI training on public facing, published work is fair use. Any published piece could be located, examined, and learned from by a human artist. This does not require the permission of the owner of said work. A mechanical apparatus does not change this principle.
All we, as artists, own, are specific expressions. We do not own styles, ideas, concepts, plots, or tropes. We do not even own the work we create in a proper sense. All our work flows from the commons, and all of it flows back to it. IP is a limited patent on specific expressions, and what constitutes infringement is the end result of the creative process. What goes into it is irrelevant, and upending that process to put inspiration and reference as infringement is the end of art as we know it.
The Getty watermark issue is an example of overfitting, wherein a repetitive element in the dataset over-emphasizes specific features to the point of disrupting the system's attempts at the creation of novel images.
No one denies that the SD dataset is trained on images Getty claims to own, but Getty has so polluted the image search functions of the internet with their watermarked images that the idea of a getty watermark has been picked up the same way the AI might pick up the idea of an eye or a tree branch. It is a systemic failure that Shutterstock and Getty can be so monopolistic and ubiquitous that a dateset trained on literally everything public facing on the internet would be polluted with their watermarks.
Watermarks that, by the way, they add to public domain images, and that google prioritizes over clean versions.
The lawsuits being brought against Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are copyright overreach being presented as a theft tissue. The facts of the matter are not as the litigants state. The images aren't stored, the SD weights are a 4 gig file trained on 250 terabytes, roughly 4 bytes per image. It runs local, does not reach out to image sources over IP. All you've got are mathematical patterns and ratios. I would go so far as to say that the class action suit is based on outright lies.
But for a moment, let's entertain the idea that what goes into a work, as inspiration, can be copyrighted. That styles can be stolen. That what goes in defines infringement, rather than what comes out. What happens then?
Well, the bad news is that if Stable Diffusion and Midjourney were shut down tomorrow, Stable Diffusion is in the wild. It runs local, it's user-trainable. In short, the genie isn't going back in the bottle. Plus, the way diffusion AI works, there's no way to trace a gen to its sources. The weights don't work like that. The indexing would be larger than the entire set of stored patterns.
Well good news, there's an AI for that. The current version is called CLIP Interrogator And it works on everything. Not just AI generated, but any image. It can find what style it closely matches, reverse engineer a prompt. It's crude now, but it will improve.
Now, you've already established that using the same patterns as another work is infringement. You've already established that inspiration is theft. And now there's a robot that tells lawyers who you draw like.
Sure, you can fight it in court. If it goes go to court. But who's to say they won't just staplegun that AI to a monetization re-direction bot like youtube has going with their content ID? Awesome T-shirt design you uploaded to your print-on-demand shop... too bad your art style resembles that from a cartoon from 1973 that Universal got as part of an acquisition and they've claimed all your cash. Sure you can file a DMCA counter-notice, but we all know how that goes.
And then there's this fantasy that upending the system would help artists. But who would "own" that style? Is that piece stealing the style of Stephen Silver, or Disney's Kim Possible(TM)? When you work for Disney their contracts say everything you make is theirs. Every doodle. Every drawing. If the styles are copyrightable, a company could hire an artist straight out of school, publish their work under work-for-hire, fire them, and then go after them for "stealing" the style they developed while working for said corp.
Not to mention that a handful of companies own so much media that it is going to be impossible to find an artist that hasn't been influenced by something under their control.
Oh, and that stock of source images that companies like Disney and Universal have? These kinds of lawsuits won't stop them from building AIs with that material that they "own". The power goes into corp hands, they can down staff to their heart's content and everyone else is denied the ability to compete with them. Worst of all possible worlds.
Be careful what wishes you make when holding the copyright monkey's paw.

HI, LET'S TALK ABOUT ART THEFT
Hello, my name is Luna; I have gone by Luna for ages and have been friends with some fantastic artists here on Tumblr. One artist is @heart-of-the-morningstar
A few days ago, it was brought to our attention as a friend group that someone had reposted her entire work, and only in the small author note pointed out it was hers, and they were only doing this because the account has errors (Which it doesn't but we will get into that later)
Tumblr media
The account in question for doing this is known as @luna-naoffcial
Now, from one Luna to another, stealing other authors' writing, purposefully taking art, and getting rid of the artist's watermark is wrong.
I have compiled a long list of proof of all the transgressions and my own personal grievances regarding what has happened and continues to happen in the artist community.
First off, story stealing:
To accomplish this, I went through every single story and copied not only the summary that this person wrote on their master list but also the first few lines of the text.
With this, I placed it in a Google reverse engine search and managed to find the accounts with the actual stories, all of which, from my understanding, do not belong to @luna-naoffcial.
They are as follows:

Tumblr media
These are all stolen writing works, not to mention the one stolen from @heart-of-the-morningstar
We will move on to stolen artwork and the watermarks intentionally cropped out of view.
I opened a Google engine bar and an image search to find these. You can then download or drag and drop the image you are looking for.
With out further ado:

I would like to dive into the 'apology' given out and the oddities I have found.
I don't know how many people on Tumblr are familiar with the Cait Corrian drama that happened a few years ago.
She was found creating many fake accounts on GoodReads and trying to ruin the chances of her other YA Authors' getting accredited.
Tumblr media
She is also notorious for making fake discord messages to try and cover up her deciete
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I post this specific account of the story and these screenshots to highlight the oddities of the following messages shared between @luna-naoffcial and her 'friend' @lia65lana towards a third individual named Kate. What is off to me is that there are a lot of odd things involved in this message exchange
For example, Lia is messaging Kate off Luna's account. Why not off your own account? On top of that, why is Kate on Luna's account? I trust many of my friends but would not hand over my account.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This conversation thread looks very similar to the Cait Corrians. Not only that, but the people in the conversation sound and talk very similarly. The grammar, spelling errors, and odd placement of some nouns and verbs are fluid between all 'three' people.
However, I am willing to step back and say it could be a dialect thing, as when I look at the @luna-naofficial account, my Google Translate automatically wants to translate from Mandarin.
What really struck me as odd however was the responses that both accounts posted as apologies
Tumblr media
Lia's account is red, and as we have seen, Luna's is green.
Both accounts posted the EXACT SAME MESSAGES. Only Luna's had an additional ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I was investigating for my friend, it changed again
Tumblr media
Again, many of these messages don't fully make sense. There are many grammatical and spelling errors, all very similar to the original picture I added first. All of these 'three' people sound, talk, and make the same errors in all the same ways. I would like to play the benefit of the doubt. In these messages, there is talk of depression, death, and anxiety, all things I personally also struggle with and I understand are hard. However, they are not excuses for purposefully stealing other people's hard work and taking credit for them.
Tumblr media
You blatantly take credit for others' work, which is wrong and disheartening.
Side note @alastorsmiles1930: The response and messages are also odd and read the same as all these others. This account is also the ONLY account that followed @heart-of-the-morningstar and the others in my friend group. I want to point this oddity out however I hope you are just an innocent bystander
From one Luna to another, please stop this and apologize. Not just to @heart-of-the-morningstar but to everyone you have been stealing from.
Thank you for listening My Moons

DL (mediafire)
Today I bring you not cc, but a small collection of .blend files for making cc a little easier. If you've ever wanted to quickly put a braid into a custom hair without completely obliterating your poly count*, then these might be able to help.
*braids will still add a LOT of polygons to your hair, but since every single polygon is visible** on these tiling braids, at least you know they're all being put to use, whereas if you were to physically braid 3 strands of geometry, lots of those polygons would wind up inside the braid, just adding to your count without contributing anything to the look
**if some polygons end up inside of other meshes, you may want to delete them to reduce the poly count further. The boolean modifier may be able to help you, but I haven't tried
These are completely hollow, tiling braid "facades". They just look like a braid, without being anything more than a stylized tube. Available in 9 shapes (which are all pretty similar, more or less, but have different 'vibes', and one of them technically doesn't resemble a braid, but if you squint it looks close enough) and 3 polygon counts to hopefully fit in with your project.
Tumblr media
TOU: Same as my cc. Read it here. I obviously don't own this concept, so feel free to reverse engineer, make your own braid tiles, etc. Just don't use mine for anything commercial (using them in commissions is fine, just not paywalled final products!)
You will need to be using one of the newer versions of blender, I believe 2.8 and up. These were made in blender 3.6, so the files will not be compatible with old versions like 2.7x.
Quick start guide:
Open your hair wip's .blend
In object mode, 'Append' the 'BraidTile' object of your choice
Select 'BraidPath' and, in Edit mode, position it however you like
Additional info under the cut, because I tend to ramble, and these require a little bit of a primer before use, probably. Unless you for sure know what you're doing, in which case, feel free to just take these and run with them.
THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL ON MAKING HAIR, OR HOW TO USE BLENDER. Seek that information elsewhere.
Before appending braids, you may want to open up the blender file and look at all the shapes, to decide which one you want to use.
When you first append your braid, or open the blend files, you may notice it does not look like the preview images above, and instead looks like a shiny pink slug. This is intentional! For previews and development work, I use @/simandy's base textures, but your hair will probably be using a different texture, so I have not included a texture at all.
Tumblr media
Simply switch the material of the 'BraidTile' to the same material your hair is using, and adjust the uv map accordingly. I'm going to assume if you are making hairs that you know how to do that, so it will not be explained here.
Once you have your braid appended, and have edited the UV Map of the 'BraidTile' piece to your liking, you can also try scaling the tile in the X, Y, and Z axes to change up the look a little. Make sure you select all of the vertices before scaling, to make sure it still tiles. This should be safe to do, and not mess up the tiling at all, but make sure you do it in Edit mode, not Object mode. (If you mistakenly do it in Object mode, you just have to press ctrl+A and select 'scale', and that should fix it)
When you have your braid adjusted, switch over to the 'BraidPath' object, and use edit mode to move the points around however you want. This is just like any other hair strand, if you're used to making hairs with paths and curves then this should already be familiar to you. All the same controls should work.
And, if you already have a curve in your hair that you'd like the braid to snap to instead, you can select the 'BraidTile' object, locate the curve modifier, and switch the curve object to any other curve in your .blend. You'll want to change the curve in the array modifier to the same one, most likely.
If you haven't used curves to make a hair before, here's a couple quick controls you might like to know:
ctrl+T will let you Twist the object around the selected point(s) alt+S will let you Scale the object around the selected point(s) selecting the first or last point of the 'BraidPath' and pressing E will Extrude a new point, making your braid longer
Remember to do all of your positioning on the 'BraidPath' object! You do not need to edit the 'BraidTile' at all once you've set up the UV map and adjusted the scale!
It should tile, twist, etc. with little issue, and should get longer or shorter according to the length of your curve with no issue. If it doesn't, make sure both the array and curve modifiers of your 'BraidTile' object are using the same curve. They should be using the 'BraidPath' object by default, but if you changed this manually, ensure that both modifiers match for best results.
Unless you know what you are doing, I do not recommend messing with any other settings in the modifiers, or adjusting the 'BraidTile' mesh in any way besides scaling the entire object at once. Otherwise you could end up with gaps and holes in your braid.
When you are done posing your braid, you can apply the modifiers to turn the whole thing into a regular mesh. I like to make a copy of my 'BraidTile' and 'BraidPath' first, just in case I want to go back and change the shape later. After converting it to a regular mesh, I'd recommend going in with proportional editing turned on and randomly scale and move a few of the pleats just a little, to make the braid look a little more organic. You can even add a couple strands to make it look messier, if you dont mind adding to your poly count even more. But this comes down to your preference and style. The braid below has had some half-assed editing done to demonstrate the concept. (Note: This is actually the low-poly version of this particular braid shape)
Tumblr media
Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you want to blend the braid in with the rest of your hairstyle. I can't tell you how to do that, as it is ultimately going to come down to your own personal preference, workflow, and the hairstyle you are making.
How do I know if I should use Hi, Mid, or Lo poly?
This is largely due to personal preference, and how you're using the braids in your project. I have included the three different poly versions to try and be mindful of the overall poly count of your poor poor meshes, but even a lo-poly braid is going to add an easy couple thousand polygons to your project. Keep that in mind! If you plan on having a LOT of braids, something like this EA hairstyle, for example:
Tumblr media
You will probably want to follow their example and use a very simple mesh and just apply a braid texture instead of using these. EA's braids here appear to be a simple box shape painted to look like braids.
If you only plan on having one, maybe two braids in your entire project, especially if they are very large braids, then you might want to go with the hi-poly option. They're the smoothest, roundest choice.
If your braid has a very small diameter, you can probably get away with just using the lo-poly option, and save some polygons you won't need anyway.
The mid-poly version exists as a sort of happy medium. They aren't quite as pointy as some of the lo-poly shapes, and they won't inflate your poly count as much as the hi-poly models, so you may find you prefer them for your applications.
It's all very subjective.
I think that's pretty much everything I wanted to say. If you have specific questions, my inbox is open.
Keep in mind I am not very skilled in blender! There's probably some optimization that can be done if you know what you're doing, and I welcome you to tweak these meshes to your heart's content, if that's you! I made these for me, but I figure they could make someone else's life a little easier too, so here you go.
If you make anything using them you are welcome to tag me! If you don't end up making anything with these then I hope you at least have some fun playing with them!

You can't say "Everything humans make is art" right after a whole tirade about how AI isn't art.
Hi op here
I CAN actually.
The machine made to make "AI" is art. Its engineering+programming. Which are crafts and a highly difficult ones.
What that machine makes however is NOT art. Its not even true artificial intelligence. Its just a bunch of stolen work cut up and pieced back together using complicated programming. What is produced is not art. What made it however is. Its a feat of accomplishment that we can get a machine to do that kind of stuff
But what it makes is not art.
Feel like @snitchanon would have a field day with all this.
So Photoshop itself is art, but works done in photoshop aren't art ? It's engineering and programming, but what it makes is not art. It's just clicking buttons and dragging the mouse until you get what you want.
As for true AI, yeah, I actually agree with you in no small part. What we call "AI" right now is nowhere close to having any kind of intelligence, we're basically making a very complicated math function with many parameters and tweaking it until it spits out the right output. There's very little explainability (it's a black box for the most part, we don't know what goes on inside or why this particular input), and every year there's a paper titled something like "We Fucked Up : How we evaluate [field of deep learning] is flawed and gives the illusion of progress".
As for the ethical issues with using stolen works, yeah, I'm completely with you, that's a dealbreaker for me, and unlearning (=getting from a model trained on a dataset to a model trained on a dataset w/o some data, without having to retrain everything, but being 100% sure the excluded data doesn't leave a single trace) is too new as a subject of research to even be usable for the next few years, so for me, AI Art generators are a big no-no.
(Also, the online ones take as much of your personal data as they can, so I'd avoid those like the plague)
HOWEVER, what "AI" image generation does isn't to cut up stolen work and put it back together, that's a myth. I don't know how this started but I've heard that said like three or four times already, it's way too specific a definition to have evolved independently so there must be a Youtuber out there to blame.
It's like saying Photoshop just takes pixels from stolen works and weaves them in the right order to make a new image. That's technically true, but it's a stupid definition that gives Photoshop way more credit than it's due. Likewise, AI image generators don't look through a database to find the right image, cut out the part they like, and add it to their final product. Otherwise, why do you think AI art would have all those problems with hands, buildings, etc... ? There can't be that many people out there drawing weird 7 fingered hands, I know some people have trouble drawing hands but not to that extent.
What they do instead (or rather what they did, because I don't know enough about the newest diffusion models to explain them in an intuitive way), is deconvolutions, basically "reversing" the operation (convolutions) that takes in a grid of numbers (image) and reduces it to a small list of numbers. With deconvolutions, you give it a small list of numbers, at random, and it slowly unravels that into an image. Without tweaking the thousands or millions of parameters, you're gonna end up with random noise as an image.
To "train" those, what you do is you pair it with another "AI", called a discriminator, that will do convolutions instead to try and guess whether the image is real or made by the generator. The generator will learn to fool the discriminator and the discriminator will try to find the flaws in the generator.
Think Youtube vs AdBlock. Adblockers are the discriminator and Youtube is the generator. Youtube puts out new ads and pop-ups that don't trigger ad blockers, and ad blockers in return fix those flaws and block the ads. After a month of fighting, it turns out ad blockers have become so good that other websites have a lot of trouble getting ads past them. You've "trained" ad blockers.
The most important thing to note is that the training data isn't kept in storage by the models, both in the adblock example and in AI image generators. It doesn't pick and choose parts to use, it's just that the millions of tiny parameters were modified thanks to the training data. You can sometimes see parts of the training data shine through, though. That's called overfitting, and it's very bad !
Tumblr media
In the middle, the model won't remember every O and X out there. It drew a curve that roughly separates the two, and depending on where a new point falls compared to that curve, it can guess if it's an O or an X without having access to the original data. However, in the example on the right, even if you remove all the O and X marks, you can still make out the individual points and guess that those holes mean an X was in there. The model cannot generalize past what it's seen, and if there's ten thousand variables instead of just two, that means you could change a single one slightly and get nonsense results. The model simply hasn't learned correctly. For image generation, that means parts of the training data can sometimes shine through, which is probably how the "cut up and piece back stolen images" myth came to be.
The reason I don't like to use AI image generators is twofold : 1. Right now, all the models out there have or are likely to have seen stolen data in their training dataset. In the state of AI right now, I really don't believe any model out there is free of overfitting, so parts of that will shine through. 2. Even if there's no overfitting, I don't think it's very ethical at all. (And 3. the quality just isn't there and I'd rather commission an artist)
HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I agree with you guys' new luddite movement. "Everything humans make is art except when they use AI" is not a good argument, just like "It's not art because you didn't move the pixels yourself" or "AI cuts up and pieces back stolen images". The first two give "I piss in Duchamp's fountain uncritically" vibes, and the last one gives "Don Quixote fighting windmills" vibes.

Lens Calibration Madness
I was doing some more tests comparing my smartphone camera to my DSLR and I noticed in one of them the smartphone looked sharper than my DSLR.
Tumblr media
(Smartphone top, DSLR bottom)
This did not compute.
How did a camera with a tiny sensor, half the megapixels, and a tiny plastic lens produce a sharper image?
Then I remembered that 3rd party lenses often need to be calibrated in order to focus properly. Canon is especially bad about restricting information about their focusing algorithms, so companies like Sigma have to reverse engineer everything. With mirrorless cameras they have been able to fix this focusing issue. DSLRs... not so mich.
Unfortunately, my camera has a flippy mirror that gets out of the way of the sensor every time you take a picture. That's the clicking sound most people associate with taking a photo. And since the mirror in a DSLR is a moving part, it will have some variability from camera to camera. And wouldn't you know it, DSLRs use that mirror to focus. If my mirror is even a few nanometers out of alignment compared to the camera Sigma used to create the focusing system for their lenses, I will not be able to get perfectly accurate autofocusing.
It will be good enough for most. But with all of the product photos and macros I do, having perfect focus is pretty critical.
So now I need to spend a couple of hours photographing test targets.
The lens was "front focusing."
Tumblr media
You want the depth of field to cover the same distance in front of the 0 as behind. You can see the 1 and 2 at the top are blurry. The goal is to have the 1 and the 1 to be of equal sharpness. Ideally if you put the 1 and 1 next to each other, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
This caused a problem when taking a picture of a cylinder, like the flashlight I was using as a test subject. The text at the center of the cylinder was in focus, but the sides were farther away and started getting blurry. All of the in focus area was in the empty space in front of the flashlight.
But, after 20 test shots adjusting the focus correction 1 unit each time, I was finally able to dial it in.
Tumblr media
And then when I redid my photos of the flashlight...
Tumblr media
Not only was the DSLR much sharper, you can now see the individual lines from the printing process.
I have been using this lens like this for years and now I am wondering how many photos were a smidge out of focus. It's not a huge deal because you have to be zoomed in about 400% to really notice. And it really only affects photos taken less than 2 feet away.
But still, perfectionism is a pretty big trigger for my anxiety so I need to fix this so my brain doesn't melt every time I take a photo in the future.
Unfortunately, the issue isn't resolved with one adjustment.
It requires 16 adjustments.
Tumblr media
You set the focal length of the lens to 18mm and take a test picture from 28 cm, 35 cm, 50 cm, and 2 m.
Then you set it to 24mm and do it over again.
Then 28mm.
Then 35mm.
And there is no gaurantee you will fix it with the first adjustment. You could overshoot or undershoot. So you have to keep testing and testing until you drill down and hit the bullseye.
All because Canon doesn't like other companies making lenses for their cameras.
Sigma will actually do the calibration for you, but you have to send them both your camera and your lens and who knows how long that would take.
And I really want to bring my camera to Florida in a few weeks.
So I guess I've got another project aside from my 20 other things I need to get done.

blorbology resources:
follow up to this, under the cut
my tutorial how to get images from the nhl website in 4k (you can do the same thing w lots of other websites esp news sites, you can kinda reverse engineer it if you have a basic understanding of how it works but i can try do a full explainer if ppl want? it varies site to site on how to do it so its kind of hard to explain you just kind of have to play around with it)
paywall bypass for chrome, firefox
ios shortcuts for downloading hq content from instagram, twitter, youtube ... pls do this instead of screenshotting/screen recording which will badly degrade the quality.. also my fav thing about these is you can set it so it saves the date to be when it was posted, not when you downloaded, and the account is in the file name for easy reference purposes. you will need the (free) apps scriptable and a-shell mini
download livestreams (and more, including nhl website videos) with hls loader
(feb 2024 edit: i no longer can recommend this bc it doesn’t work anymore 🥲) 🏴‍☠️ dl stock images (g*tty etc.) choose the 3k option, this works the best of all the sites ive found
t*rrent games 🏴‍☠️🏒 site 1, site 2 (disclaimer use a vpn dont be an idiot if youve never done this before pls follow a tutorial or something. also just use google translate for the russian LMAO)
a pro tip also is to search your blorbo/team/etc places other than google/youtube, like vimeo (this is where the cream of the crop content is hiding, i search nhl on vimeo every few days), photo websites like flickr, vsco, etc. really try to think outside the box with this! for example u can search inside books with the internet archive/google books. i found jack was randomly featured in a book about sidney crosby this way.
learn to use google and twitter etc search tools so you can filter through searches easily. this is more useful the more common of a name your blorbo has, and unfortunately for hockey there is many a tyler.
these are all varying degrees of copyright infringement so do at your own risk etc etc mr. bettman if u see this i have never done anything illegal in my life i dont know what piracy is and am making this post for nonprofit media archival purposes!!!

Restless, Respite
my take on the final scene of the Hold On ending | Head Engineer Mark x The Captain (can be read as platonic) | Words: 1,232 | read on AO3
basically I was thinking far too much about how we are presumably the last to wake up that final time (besides the colonists) and how it seems like the crew has been up for a while and how engineer Mark might be feeling about that (not good)
The Head Engineer tapped his fingertips anxiously on the rim of his coffee mug.
The Captain hadn't woken up yet.
It had been a good half hour of the Invincible II’s various personnel filling the bridge and every other area of the ship. The crew leads conferred with each other and their respective teams to ensure everything was fully functional and ready to move on to the next phase of the mission. The entire crew was bustling, eager to set foot on their new home, the promise of a new life awaiting them.
Still, the Captain did not stir.
Despite assurance from the computer AI that all systems were nominal, Mark had checked every major system personally, and with a little more caution than usual. If anyone noticed the slight lack in his typical blasé confidence, they didn’t mention it.
They'd had time to run diagnostics, prepare equipment and shuttles to take down to the surface, and all have their “morning” coffee. All except The Captain and Mark.
With a quiet sigh, he pressed a few icons on his tablet, issuing a command to the system to reheat their drink for the fifth time. They'd wake up any minute now, for sure.
Celci let him know that all one hundred thousand colonists were doing well, and seemed a little surprised when his response didn't hold quite the same bite as most of their interactions. (She also insisted that there was nothing wrong with the Captain’s pod, and people wake up at different speeds.) Burt assured him that the reactor was stable and had fared well with the journey, followed by Gunther enthusiastically reporting that the advance team was ready to head down to the planet's surface to scout ahead.
For once, there was no emergency. It was almost too good to be true. There was really no need to wake the Captain prematurely. If they needed a few more minutes after all they'd been through, that was fine.
And yet, Mark couldn't help the growing pit of dread in his stomach.
The details were a little fuzzy, but with every passing minute his memories of the wormhole and the ensuing chaos became clearer, more solid — the freshest of which being a pained exchange with his Captain, his dearest friend, in the warp core room, as the weight of the multiverse fell heavy on his shoulders with realisation and the subsequent guilt and remorse, the walls of reality literally beginning to crumble around them.
Remembering it all was like waking from a dream in reverse; images of each universe and lifetime stung in the tight grip of his psyche instead of slipping from recollection. His mind began to race, panicking slightly as he remembered times his Captain hadn't woken up at all.
Mark took a small sip of coffee. He felt a headache coming on.
As if on cue, he felt a gentle bump against his leg. He cast his gaze towards it and was happy to see Chica softly nudging him, panting cheerfully with her big eyes aglow.
‘Hey, bub.’
He smiled and bent to pet her soft fur with his free hand, grateful for a comforting distraction from his wandering thoughts.
‘Yeah, any moment now,’ he muttered under his breath as he went to retrieve the Captain’s coffee mug while Chica trotted away.
‘Initialising Wakey-Wakey Protocol.’
Mark’s head shot up at the sound of the AI voice announcing their emergence from cryo-sleep. Relief flooded him as he saw them slowly step out of their pod, tentatively poking a crew member as if wanting to make sure this was real. He understood the feeling.
‘Mornin’, Captain!’ Mark beamed as he strode over to greet them. He eyed the Captain up and down with concern. They looked about as exhausted and on edge as he’d felt upon waking up this time.
‘Ooh, you look like you’ve been through hell. Yeah, cryo-sleep sucks, but coffee can help.’ He offered them their mug which they took automatically. With a friendly clunk of his own cup against theirs, he made his way around the main console to talk with various crew members while the crew leads took turns speaking to the Captain.
‘Computer, let’s get those blast shields open.’
The head engineer let out an awed sigh at the view. ‘The trip was smooth. Just a few rocks, couple cosmic rays, nothing the computer couldn’t handle on its own,’ he reassured, hoping to ease their obvious trepidation. To his relief, they seemed to relax immensely at the sight of the planet before them. He watched as they reached out a gloved hand and pressed gently against the glass (memories of said glass shattering flashed across his mind, which he quickly dismissed).
A whole array of emotions crossed his Captain’s face as they admired the planet that would soon house the new colony. He could almost swear that he saw the tell-tale glisten of tears forming in their eyes. Eyes that were now wise and weary beyond their years. Eyes that had seen countless people die and the very fabric of time and space glitch and collapse and attempt to put itself together again. Eyes that could pierce right through his and pull him apart at the seams with a single look.
‘She is a beauty, isn’t she, Captain? The long range scans did not do her justice. Perfect in almost every way. We’ll still have to do top to bottom scans once we’re down on the surface but we’re moving equipment as fast we can. The crew is eager to get off the ship and onto solid ground. I think you can understand the sentiment.’
They watched as the shuttles disembarked from the main ship and made their way towards the planet. The Captain looked pleased to see progress already being made.
Mark hesitated for a moment. There was so much he wanted to say. To ask. Lifetimes worth of emotions lay pent up inside of him, itching at the walls of his throat and the tip of his tongue. But the guilt still bore down on him, and the fear of truly acknowledging and dwelling on all that had transpired between the two far outweighed the desire to talk and have it all laid out in the open where it couldn’t gnaw at his insides. No doubt his Captain would probably want to discuss it all eventually. Maybe they hated him right now and were just trying to hide it. Hell, he’d deserve it if they did. But he couldn’t have that conversation here and now. Not with the whole crew present and the colony to build. Not with so many people looking to both of them for direction and guidance. Maybe that was an excuse.
Instead: ‘And, uh, thank you…’ he uttered simply, voice low and earnest, as he felt their gaze turn towards him before finally bringing himself to meet their eyes, if only briefly.
‘...for, uh, not giving up on me. Just… thank you.’
The Captain gave him a sincere smile and he returned it with a nod. He wasn't sure he remembered the last time he saw them smile like that.
They brought the coffee mug up to their lips. It was one he’d reserved especially for them, bearing a clear message in bold text: ‘#1 Captain’.
As they finally took a sip, Mark hoped they understood that he meant it.

I know this is true for me, but has the anime adaptation of KNY affected at all what your favorite arcs are?
I LOVE THEM ALL but yyyyyeah, the Ufotable adaptations make me love each and every arc even more than I already did. Yuukaku-hen especially had this effect on me, I think it was a combination of:
--Dedication to developing the setting, so you really felt the ambiance of Yoshiwara (although I'm still upset that they chose to set it in late autumn instead of closer to early/mid summer like would have made more timeline sense and been supported by manga background details)
--reverse engineering the very creative manga battle scenes as a means to fill in the blanks and bring them to life in a dynamic and exciting way that still images did not quite convey
--the vocal performance, OH MY GOSH

Does anyone know where I can find the good quality version of this image? It's so frustrating because when cross searching on google it'll tell me the original quality is 850x478, but I can't find a way to download it in that quality. This is another version of the image (I'm guessing it's Mayoi promo art):
Tumblr media
But I liked the clean white background one...
#It's cute...#It's got Akutagawa stealing glances at Atsushi#Thought asking was worth a try ;;;;;;#Google cross image search has changed and as someone who used it as I use breathing it's been absolutely heartbreaking.#It makes cross searching images so much harder it's awful#Because before when you looked up an image it suggested you the best quality avaible of that image.#And the search got worse every year but it was still functional you know??#But now there's not that anymore. There's no “large” “medium” “small” and instead it only gives you “find image source”#Dude I don't want to find the image source. I've downloaded the image I KNOW the source. What I want is ANOTHER SOURCE with better quality#And I used to get it when I was 10 and I used to get it when I was 15 and I sued to get it when I was 20#And now I don't have it anymore?? It stripes away one of the most powerful search tools on the internet from the public????#It drives me insane. Like why does internet get worse every year that's not how humanity is supposed to work#Sorry. I needed to rant. This makes every quality-freak media archivist (like me) job harder beyond comparison#Btw if you're looking for an alternative Yandex images still does the work... It's not as powerful search engine as google#and it's often going to miss the particular hidden media (y'know- super niche Akutagawa merch from 2018 and stuff)#But for the rest it does a pretty good job. If anything there's still the best quality avaible option#But seriously looking up stuff for aktgw-daily has gotten so much harder ever since this fucked up change to google lens#and it makes me hate the world. I haven't been able to find a way to reverse it but if anyone more tech savy than me who has any idea-#what I'm talking about can help me. Please please hmu I'll be grateful forever#Sorry for the rant I have a lot of pent up rage over this. Stop making broke people's lives harder challenge#random rambles

hey! do you have any tips for searching for stuff that wouldn’t otherwise be indexed on saucenao or have a direct link/wayback machine snapshot?
When it comes to that, your options will depend on how much information you have about image you are looking for. Although, there are a few common avenues of action that you can try.
When reverse search engines like SauceNAO don't return any good results, there's a possibility that the sample image you have is altered or incomplete. In that scenario, your goal should be to find a "more complete" instance that seems to be closer to the original image.
General-purpose reverse image search engines, like Google Lens and Yandex Images, are better suited for that. I often hop between searches of increasingly complete edits before finding anything resembling the original image.
Now, if you're confident that you have the full source image but still can't get any good hits, you might need to do some "brute-force searching", according to how much you know about the work. For example, if you recognize the character or series depicted, you can look for similar pieces on image boards or dedicated communities. Every bit of information you have is a breadcrumb you can follow.
Secondly, when sifting through Wayback Machine snapshots, there are many roundabout ways of finding lost pages based on the host of the content you are looking for. For instance, you can find that a given blog at "name.tumblr.com" has not been stored, but other pages under the "name.tumblr.com/*" prefix might.
There are also cases like pixiv, which used to provide links in the format "www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=NUMBER", that are now like "www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/NUMBER". Small changes like that might, surprisingly, yield great results.
Those are some of the little techniques I often rely on. I should probably write more about them one day. Anyways, I hope that helps!

Hello. I'm sharing a fundraiser from a Palestinian who reached out to me on Instagram. His name is Mahmoud Badawi.
Please share and donate if you can. This campaign is not vetted, but donations are protected and I did not find any signs of stolen images when I did reverse image search. It is a new campaign and very low on funds.
Here is his story in the fundraiser description:
Hello everyone
I don't know where to start, but pray for us to stop this genocide before anything else.
I am Mahmoud Badawi ,35 years old, married, and have 4 children.
My wife, Walaa, is 32 years old.
My children:
Anas, 8 years , Zeina, 6 years
Adam, 4 years And my baby Celine, who was born less than a month before the war.
I graduated from the College of Engineering, Software Department, in 2012.
I tried to work on my degree several times, but I was not able to do so due to the lack of job opportunities.
I was forced to work at anything in response to the difficult requirements of life here in Gaza.
I established a small carpentry through which I was able to provide daily food and provide the minimum requirements of life for my wife and four children.
Until this war came, since the seventh of October, our lives stopped, and it took away our ambition and our simple dreams of living a decent life.
We were displaced repeatedly from our home in Gaza City, and we were ordered to move to the city of Rafah by force, where there is no shelter, food, or clear water.
We responded to this request out of fear for the lives of my children and my wife.
We have continued to suffer every day and every moment until now.
One day, in the middle of this genocide, I was informed that my small carpentry had been bombed, and my source of livelihood was taken away in an instant that I could not have imagined.
Only two days later, I was informed that my house had been bombed, a piece of news that struck me like a thunderbolt!
I did not believe it until I saw a picture of my small house being bombed, and that was the worst thing you can hear.
I lost everything I had in one moment
I am a man who used to spend my life at my work and providing the necessities of life for my children.
Now that I was dreaming of a beautiful life for my children, I no longer know what I am dreaming about!
Our lives stopped from that moment.
I created this campaign in the hope that people of humanity would help me rebuild my home in an effort to contain my children, provide a safe place for them after the war, and try to rebuild my small carpentry.
Seeing my children at this age without shelter breaks my heart, and it certainly breaks the heart of every person who has an ounce of humanity in his heart.

Hi Emma,
I’ve been trying to put this train of thoughts for down for quite some time, not sure if it will make any sense or not. But I wanted to put it out there in some form, because every single time a new chapter gets added up, the less the whole convo makes sense.
I get if you won’t want to publish this.
I have read a few of the latest anons and followed Lewis’ business and no-business ventures for quite some time now, mostly because I got across them on socials, and I ended up forming my own ideas on Lewis, but they are a bit controversial, so we will leave those out, for today.
From Lewis’ himself and people we can trust enough’ words (George’s as well), it’s kind of evident that Lewis (as many people in the show business have) has a private persona that is very much different to the one he quite carefully presents to the public.
Lewis’ name is a brand, and like many brands is worth millions, reason why there is lots of engineering behind the scenes about the events he shows up at, the sponsors and other brands that work with him and, mostly, the people that he associates himself with (in public).
His social medias have been wiped out in recent times (after he received his Title from the Royal Family) and rebuilt to present him in a certain way, a more private and watered down figure than what he’s been in his rebellious party years, if we want to put it that way.
His social medias nowadays are always constructed and filled with activism, business projects, positivity and sponsored events with others high end socialites or even political figures.
Yet there are some kind of discrepancies that sometimes slip through the cracks that kind of make little sense.
Lewis can do whatever he wants in his personal life, the non-public one, but considering how excessively careful he always is with his perceived reputation, there are things like the Antarctica trip that always catch you by surprise when they happen
It’s clear that Lewis has a wilder side and probably a rather controversial one, so certain kind of associations are not that unexpected of him.
It’s the way they are treated by his PR team and by himself that clash with whatever PR image of him they want to present us (the public) with.
Lewis has been associated or somehow involved (even romantically) with bigger or smaller names for the longest amount of time, so it frankly makes me wonder what is the gain in being associated with so many controversial people, when his PR facade is so well chiselled and preserved.
Of course he can like hanging out with said people, maybe he even likes dating them, but some of them (Juliana) are mostly product placements to generate publicity and clicks/views. So the question now would be, with all those kind of let’s call them IG ‘’models” that are available out there, why would they let Lewis associate with someone as controversial as her.
We can have the longest discussion about this, but how many times Lewis has been pictured officially out and about with her by his side, bar the two NY eve’s events? The point I am trying to make, here, is that you can find someone to scratch your itch without anyone knowing about it ever, there are certain professional figures who are tight lipped way lot more than an IG “model”’under an NDA will ever be.
His PR team and personal entourage certainly can provide one individual with this kind of service, so if Lewis or his entourage keep on associating with those kind of people (influencers, etc), and do the reverse of hiding it (if Lewis wanted to date Juliana in secret, he perfectly could, without anyone knowing a thing about it), pushing the story to the media… means they all have something to gain from it.
Now, with an IG “model”, linking your name with someone like Lewis’ would generate views and cash, but in Lewis’ case… he’d generate lot more rumour by associating with someone like Shakira, rather than Juliana.
So the gain doesn’t seem worth the risk of being spotted with someone as controversial as virtually unknown as her.
Might be overanalyzing, but there has been various instances of Lewis taking the casual L,l with medias, and not in his “romantic” life only. But with the carefully construced persona that he has, and the team around him, I wonder how some slips this big have occurred fairly often, you know.
Very confusing.
You make a lot of interesting points anon, and there's a lot to cover.
I think with anyone in the public eye you've got to remember there's two versions. There's very much the person, and then there's often the persona. There's Lewis Hamilton the human being, but there's also "Lewis Hamilton" the brand and the public figure. For some celebs they're indistinguishable from each other, for others there's a lot more distance between them. With Lewis, I think they're very interchangeable and he flows quite effortlessly between the two. Lewis loves and appreciates his privacy, but he also loves the attention when he chooses.
I think public personas operate a bit like Doctor Who regenerations, and we're on about our 3rd or 4th iteration of "Lewis". We started out with the young f1 rookie who was very serious but taking it all in and could do no wrong. Then we had the burgeoning celebrity phase. Gets a famous girlfriend, starts getting a bit confident, maybe a bit cocksure at times, but starts embracing the limelight and the attention. Then there was the obnoxious asshole phase. People can deny it happened all they want but... it absolutely did. Now we're into his 'reforming' phase. Mellowed out, more in control of his image, more socially aware, really trying to build that GOAT brand and fight back against some of the earlier criticisms of him. His growth stage.
I think people overlook the effect his relationship with Nicole may have had on him. He was very young and very new to the public eye and he was pushed into a very public relationship that I don't think was entirely healthy. It got very messy and I think he was definitely changed by it. He's never had a visible long term relationship since.
It's easy to view everything connected to Lewis through a PR lens and whilst I'm sure his PR people do monitor who he's seen with and who he associates with, they will undoubtedly have to balance that with indulging what Lewis wants to do. He's in the public eye, but he's still a person and a grown adult. They can't wrap him up in cotton wool and save him from himself and his bad choices at the expense of allowing him to be an individual. Its impossible to exist as a human who only ever makes the right choices and we shouldn't expect him to try.
Equally, I think people naively assume that Lewis is above playing PR games, but he absolutely does. When Lewis wants to be private, he manages it highly successfully. He's not stupid. He didn't tell anyone he was going to Africa, he didn't tell anyone about Antarctica, but he told everyone he was going to Brazil this winter break, even though its known to have a pretty effective gossip/paparazzi culture. He said he wanted a latina girlfriend... and who has he been linked to since? I kind of get the impression he's quite happy to be spotted here and with her for whatever reason.
I think people are overanalysing it slightly. She's young and stunning and she has previous with famous people so knows how to play the discretion game for his benefit and hers. Whether it's for real or for show, it works both ways for him. We all know about the problematic stuff because we've looked in to it, most people won't know and won't care, rightly or wrongly. As you say, she's largely unknown. She's only deemed controversial because it's Lewis and the more rabid corners of his fanbase view him as morally pure.
Lewis hangs out with a lot of problematic people and he really doesn't try and hide it. People have a habit of viewing him as entirely unproblematic on an almost Swift-esque level of delusion. Not every questionable thing is a PR misstep, he's capable of fucking up entirely on his own. He's quite clearly a Musk fanboy for example, and he's spoken of his love of him depressingly recently entirely off his own back and I think I personally probably judge him far more harshly for that than anything else right now.
I honestly don't see his public reputation slipping right now, if anything, I think he's probably getting less shit in the press these days than he ever has before, especially in the UK press, probably aided somewhat by the knighthood.
I think people are upset because she's not someone they personally approve of, and I do kind of understand that sentiment. It definitely sucks when you start to question the opinions you've formed about your fave, but that's kind of healthy? I mean genuinely, more people need to criticise and hate on their faves, not in a troll/hateful way, but it's definitely a good thing to take a step back from people you don't know once in a while and go "God, what a dick!". Definitely keeps the fandom a bit healthier! As they used to say "Your fave is problematic".

Idk, I want to talk about Lino's prosthetic.
He gets his first while in The Sun. the Leader gives it to him to 'celebrate' his birthday. Lino doesn't know when his birthday is, no one in the corona knows theirs because it was seen as outlandish and wasteful to celebrate oneself like that. That was what the Leader said when they were banned soon after the Sun formed. But the prosthetic .
The implants were put in too early. Lino is still fighting the same infection he got from his crush wounds not being treated right. A less obedient doctor would have taken one look at his femur and say they need to remove the whole thing if they're ever going to make a functioning prosthetic for him. The implants hurt. The bone they're supported by is weak and they're too heavy for someone Lino's size.
The leg itself was even worse. It was a perfect mirror of his other. It was warm to the touch and the skin felt real and it could move like it was flesh and bone instead of metal and silicone. He even had some sensation of touch through it. But it was so extremely heavy, and his implants so poorly done that using it was agony. It would twist his hips with every step and make him stand with his entire weight on the other. It looked perfect though and that was the point. It wasn't meant to make Lino able to walk again. It was meant to make him 'perfect' again. The fact it gave the Leader an excuse to remove Lino's chair from the picture and trap him more fully where he was needed for the image the Leader was trying to project was just an accidental benefit.
after he escapes back to the bunker Lino takes the leg apart piece by piece. Cannibalizing what he wants and discarding the rest. He's a tinkerer at heart. He has no formal training but he's gotten enough machines apart and put back together that he can reverse engineer the contraption. His first version is barely better than the original. Hes still trying to make it look like a leg and wasting a lot of weight to do so. His second is better, it's all skeletonized aluminum but still too heavy. his third, fourth, eighth, they all have problems. but each iteration gets closer and closer to what he needs.
until he finally has it. He still calls it a prototype, because he doesn't expect it to work so well. It's light, its cuff is designed so that the meat of his thigh takes some of the weight when stepping and standing so his implants don't have to do so much work. He wires up the touch sensors to help deal with the phantom pains, and the heater so he could still go outside in the winter without it getting unbearably cold where it meets his leg. It's an ugly, purely functional thing and he loves it so much more than the perfect leg he had been given.

one thing that makes me really sad is that i've been collecting all sorts of fanart and general artwork for a decade or so and i often wonder if any of these are lost to time online or not. reverse image search already barely works properly, either because of broken search engines or because people deleted their accounts/set those not to be searchable as an attempt to hide from ai crawlers.
and... i don't know, it genuinely makes me upset to know how much art i considered precious to me, is essentially gone and i don't know if i'm allowed to repost it elsewhere or not. that's part of the reason why i stopped caring what people do with my art (though i prefer people leave credits and sources, but considering that i change names and drop old urls, idc if they don't credit me, that's on me lmao): i may hate what i create, but it's something i made, something that will live on for a little bit longer than it should (possibly outlive me), something that might be liked by someone else more than by its creator. so i find it hypocritical to forbid people from saving, reposting and generally enjoying my stuff when i literally mourn all these small pieces of lost media that i forget to save or am not able to repost for one reason or another. (i don't even have a place where i can post my collections, every platform is a sinking ship and i have no money or energy to keep my own page)
i recently found that some people reuploaded really cringy and dumb art of mine before i deleted the account where i posted it. reuploads were also in original sizes in png. the whole thing is dumb as hell as holds literally zero value, but part of me is really happy that people enjoyed it when i posted it initially, found it worthy enough to archive it elsewhere. i guess it doesn't really hold "zero" value after all, and again, it's hypocritical of me to say considering i collect art that a lot of original artists got rid of in the same manner as i did.
idk what the bottom line here is.
i'm tired of experiencing loss. doesn't matter if it's people, objects, passion, art, anything else, i'm tired of losing.
