synopsis: with y/n being in a new environment, still facing rejection, how can she bounce back?

chapter 5

the previous week was hell for y/n. she got to finish interviewing all the members part of the men’s and women’s basketball team. she plans on having study sessions with the team members starting next week. aubrey has been noticing dark circle’s under y/n’s eyes, and she’s growing concered.

it was a saturday night, and aubrey was going out to hang with the team, when she went out of here room, she saw y/n locked in with her research. she saw a glimpse of the introduction.

university of connecticut, in short uconn, is known for many achievements in their curriculars, and especially in basketball. according to previous research, many have grown fond of basketball due to university of connecticut, with many championship titles being brought to their home at storrs.

basketball in uconn is more popular than ever. with this, the researcher aims to see the difference of the resilience of these student athletes from the basketball teams of uconn. according to..

“girl thats dope, but you have been reviewing this introduction for the longest time. you need a break, your eyebags are telling you to do so.” aubrey said. “i just want a good grade.. so im eligible to transfer to stanford.” y/n replies nonchalantly.

“that is true, but you need to loosen up for now y/n. you have done a lot. im hanging out with the team today, you should really come so i wouldn’t have to worry about my teammate finishing cans of red bull. thats bad for you!” aubrey proposes. “i dont think i can..” y/n declines.

“im not taking no for an answer, so come into your room and put nice clothes on. i can wait for you” aubrey drags y/n out of her chair and brings her to the girl’s room.

“fine”

after 30 minutes, the roommates finally arrived to the destination: a steakhouse. it’s tradition for the team to eat at their favorite steakhouse at every start of the school year. the team may bring their friends and significant others to this gathering, but they all keep in mind to keep this gathering not too big and still quite intimate.

“hi y/n!!!” the team greets her, aubrey signaling her to sit beside nika and her. nika turned to y/n, and asked more personal questions about her life. they only got to talk during the interviews, and nika was genuinely willing to be friends with y/n.

they got more comfortable with each other, they found out they both liked rock climbing, building legos, and had mystery movies as their comfort movies.

while talking, one member of the team, kk, got curious. “so.. what’s the deal between aubrey and y/n? we didn’t know that y/n would be here, but don’t worry boo we’re all glad you’re here” kk asked.

everyone except for one

“oh nooo. y/n and i arent like that. yeah we’re roommates and we got close to each other but she’s not my type, don’t even know if she’s for the girls! i brought her here since she’s been too deep into her research. she needs to eez down” aubrey declined the allegation, y/n agreeing to her.

“only answer this if your comfortable with it but.. are you for the girls?” kk’s curiousity got stronger. “oh no its fine kk! yeah i am gay, just dont have a label. but i have never had a girlfriend before” y/n answered with a smile.

“OOOOH!” kk and the others exclaimed. “so what are you looking for in a partner? we could hook you up!” ice asked.

“i want my personal athletic or active, i dont know, they just have that aura. i also want my person to be quite smart.. i dont know guys its just attractive to me! and i hope theyre love language is words of affirmation. im a sucker for that” y/n shamefully answers.

“you know y/n, maybe your just talking about me” kk teased. “NOOOO”s and “EEEWWW”s were said after that, laughter all around.

after a wonderful night and dinner, it was time to head to an open basketball court. the uconn team loves to hoop after a good night out. its their only time to really have fun with their sport, no rules or anything. the steakhouse was just walking distance to the court, hence the team leaving their cars first at the parking area.

as they go into the court, y/n was smiling with the rest of the team, until she sees paige. paige gave her an eye roll, which made y/n feel quite annoyed and uncomfortable.

the rest of the team wanted to see y/n play, so she did, she was against paige, qadence, nika, and ice. y/n was having fun, but whenever she makes in contact with the ball and paige was beside her, paige kept on nudging her and slightly hitting her. paige was rough, which was not usual for her especially when they were just playing for fun.

the others felt paige’s competitiveness, and it didn’t feel right. kk calmed paige down. “paige whats your problem? she doesn’t play. that was foul” kk asked. paige just scoffed and ignored kk. kk was for sure that paige was hiding something, and she would have to ask next time when paige is more open to talk about it.

the team decided to call it a day. while they were walking back to the parking area, paige was dribbling a basketball, and started to throw it up— which led to another “accident.”

the ball goes forward and hits y/n again, but this time it was on her shoulder. y/n looked back to see who threw the ball, only to see that it was the blonde once again.

Why hello my Lovergurls, Loverbois and Loverenbies! It’s been a minute since I made a Naked post, hasn’t it? Well, need something fun to do tonight, so given a particular development that came to light because of the AYS behind the scenes, I decided that it would be fun to point out a couple of things, while we look at a couple of chronologically very interesting fact at least to me, they are quite interesting I even have a tin-hat moment for y’all! … So ⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️if you don’t want any AYS VOD Behind The Scenes spoilers, this is not the post for you. Ayte? Cool, lesgo! 😘💋

The date is July 13, 2023. JM, and his perfectly shaven legs, get into a flight to NYC. Nobody knows why. Most of his solos assume he must be going for a personal schedule that has nothing to do with JK. Most Jkkrs assume that he is going to support JK. Boat Blue Bird AMI feel a certain way about airport info which they can’t be completely blamed for tbh, so they completely ignore the whole thing.  

At this very moment in time, all we know for sure are the following 3 things: 1. JK’s solo first single, Seven, will be released July 14, 2023. 2. JK will debut said single with a live performance on Good Morning America on that same July 14. 3. July 14 also just so happens to be Silver Day. So it is that the evening of the 13th of July pulls up and pictures of what seem to be JM and JK going about the streets of NYC start surfacing. Some believe them, some don’t and we are all left at that.

July 14, 2023, the following day, finally arrives. JK does amazing, despite the rain, and even though he let’s it slip that JM is somewhere in NYC because of a very curious TV-host, he manages to still keep JM’s presence very vague. Yet, the thing that will have the majority that was paying attention except for celebrating Capulets of course rather confused, and some even aghast, is the fact that JM was nowhere to be found at JK’s performance. This will eventually be a topic of discussion for months to come, given how JM had been physically present for every other member’s debut, release, live, or fanmeet. 

Eventually, on the July 15th a video of who seem to be JM and JK on a yacht surfaces on the world wide web thanks to said yacht’s dickhead owner, as well as tells of various other people who begin to spot the two around Connecticut. As always, most AMI ignore, Jkkrs decide to die on that hill, and Capulets fight to deny everything. Regardless, eventually JM goes back to Seoul in the same way he had left, alone, and the reason for his visit to NYC, because at this point nobody believes he was in Connecticut, or even with JK at all remains a mystery.

Little did we know that: On July 13th, not only were JM & JK truly spotted skipping around NYC, after they’d gone eating at a Korean restaurant named Antoya, with their staff and crew,

but JM had indeed gone specifically for the sole objective of being with JK and filming a single travel vlog for AMI before they left for the military. 

Could he not have just shown up for JK’s debut at GMA, just like he’d done with all the other members? Yes, I’m sure he could have, but apparently JM would rather have spent the night before leisurely with JK, perhaps getting him tired enough to have him at least sleep a little, so that he’d be ready for his performance the following day, rather than staying awake from nerves and/or excitement, to then eventually relaxedly go and film their carefree and “therapeutic” content. 

Eventually, we’d also have confirmed the fact that JM & JK went back to Antoya, this time alone, most likely right before JM returned to Seoul. 

The date is September 23, 2023. Jungkook is once again in NYC where, and within the walls of a very familiar hotel room, he starts a WEVERSE live, right after he’s done performing at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park:

That very day Jimin has the world in hysterics as his posts his first #ThisIsJimin reel on IG many “cried”: it was emotional. This very night JK would also get on a flight to get back to Seoul. JK lands September 24, 2023 and nothing would be heard neither of him, or JM, on this day.

September 25, 2023 quickly comes by and from this day, for a couple of more days, JM start’s to be particularly active on IG, making us believe that “Okay, interactive JM is back!” … 🤡 by first posting a video of Tae. 

Tae Surprise Performance

September 28 he posts a picture of what looks like a shark eventually JK will tell us it was a whale 🙃… okay saying that JK drew it. September 29, JK’s second single, 3D, is released, and JM also posts something about it on his IG. October 1, the second #ThisIsJimin is posted on IG and, on the same day, JK also has a StationHead Listening Party with AMI. This would be the last we’d hear from JM until the day before his birthday (October 12, 2023). 

Little did we know that: On September 25th, JK, JM and Tae would be boarding on a plane all the way to Jeju, to film the Autumn episode of Are You Sure?!. I guess being around Tae might have been what made JM want to post that video on that same day, but really, who knows, right? That same night, after Tae goes to bed, JK and JM spend some time together in the living room watching a performance video for SNTY and chit-chatting; the below being one of the chats:

From this convo, we gather that JK didn’t sleep, at least on the flight from NYC to Seoul, reason why he was tired, and it would appear that he’s told JM beforehand because he is searching for consensus, which JM readily gives. So at this point we are all like “He’s told JM before they travelled”. 

And then this AYS behind the scenes change this whole scenario completely:

Given as to how they literally were to have met to film content together, couldn’t they just have met the following day? Yes, I’m sure they could have, but apparently JM & JK would rather have spent the previous night together, rather as JK landed in Soul as they enjoyed some makguksu made by JK at JK’s place.

Tin-Hat Moment: Remember how I’ve mentioned time and time again that I just go on the Blue Bird to silently get info? There was a rumor back in August 2023 that JK and JM were spotted in Jeju. No pictures were going around on the platform but it was all that jkkr twitter was talking about for that day as the rumor died within a day or two. It took me forever to find this tweets again but here are some:

I remember this rumor so well since, because of it, I thought that AYS Jeju was being filmed in August, which is close enough to Chuseouk. However, if these episodes were filmed at the end of September; how was there a rumor that they had been spotted in Jeju mid August? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 …

… I guess we’ll never know.

The date is November 23, 2023. JK & JM stroll up together into Incheon and because of that nobody, be it jkkrs, be it Capulates, be it Blue Bird AMI can ignore their presence and the word of everyone’s mouth is: Why?

Reporters at the sight all have received info saying that they are working together on some kind of project. And as they make their way through Incheon greeting people, looking like the next royal couple, they eventually land in Tokyo, and after JM posts the below pictures on November 25th, chaos ensues. 

“They are not staying in the same hotel?!” “JM has spent his whole day without JK, shopping and having fun” “JK is no where near JM” “Yeah, we’ve felt it for a while, they are just business associates kinda bandmates” “So it is just work after all” “... maybe they just happened to have business in Tokyo on the same day and went together”.

Eventually on that same November 25, JM & JK are seen leaving for Sapporo, and on November 28, they both go back to Seoul. This time around, the general consensus is that they are filming because they are seen in the airport in Sapporo with GoPros, but nobody knows what they are filming exactly. Hence, they go fairly unnoticed in Sapporo, except for a youtuber who randomly spots them, on her way back to Seoul, and who thought she’d seen JK and his blond girlfriend … 😏 .

Little did we know that: On November 23rd, JK was hella busy when they went to Tokyo, as we know, amongst the many things he did, he also filmed the Hate You video JM’s favourite song from Golden may I add:

So much so that there were sightings of JK being spot in particular restaurants and JM in others, which to be honest, given how busy JK was, I don’t have a problem believing. So then, Couldn’t have JM just meet JK directly in Sapporo? Afterall JM did fly to NYC to meet up with JK alone? Yes, I’m sure he could have, but apparently JK would rather have had JM around even if they couldn’t do much together because, from his very own words:

… Who knows what they did together in Tokyo. This, like many other things surrounding JK & JM might just remain a mystery we’ll never know 🙄.

Now let me tell you, because of what had been initially presented to us, throughout JM & JK’s “chapter 2” and thanks to what is slowly being revealed, it is safe to say that we were NEVER going to get that WEVERSE live, not for fault of JK I’d say, I think my Twinflame tried his best

Also he can lie his ass off when needed kudos to him no cap!👏🏾  This live happened after they met in NYC, on the 30th of July. I mean this the same man that pulled up on WEVERSE for a whopping 1 minute and 53 second with a 17’s member.

Basically if they wanted to have done a live together; they would have.

Ever since I’ve found out that basically JM spent every single night before filming AYS with JK, for, even though he didn’t really have to, nights during which honest to everything, they could have just done a 10sec live particularly in Tokyo, since we publicly so them go together, I’ve had Rihanna’s James Joint stuck in my head:

This song made me think about them, not because I think they are in this edgy-as-hell relationship, but because it finally dawned of me that there were a lot of things that both JM & JK rather would have done than coming on a live with us 🤡🥹🙃, which to be honest, no matter how much I am the first person who loves to see them together and would have boxed JK’s trainer for a live … I must admit … I respect their decisions, and if they really are in a relationship, I find this rather healthy NGL. Beetlejuice the Musical Cartoon - Episode Concepts! ✨️

I keep coming back to the idea of Beetlejuice having a musical cartoon, because I genuinely believe it has all of the elements needed to create a fantastic series! The question I keep asking myself, however, is what kinds of episodes would I like to see in it?

I decided to jot down a couple of ideas that came to mind. Some of these are modern takes of episodes from the original cartoon, because I like to imagine how the musical cast would approach some of these scenarios!

Each episode will have a title with a brief synopsis. There is no specific order, however I will be prioritizing those which I actually made detailed posts for at the top (links will be in the title).

All of these episodes take place after the events of the musical, and under the assumption that Beetlejuice has begun trying to make amends with the Maitland-Deetzes (those are their own separate stories entirely)!

Lydia’s School Project

For the past couple of months, Lydia has been working on a modification project for her camera. Specifically, she has been trying to create a filter lens that can make ghosts visible when taking pictures. However, she hasn't been able to make much progress, due school taking up the majority of her responsibilities... that is, until she sees the opportunity to work on it for her school's end of year fare. Her project almost appears to hit a dead end, until Beetlejuice chimes in.

Strange and Unusual

Lydia and Beetlejuice find a strange looking object on the floor. Lydia decides to investigate it further, believing that there's a lot more to this object than they realize. Beetlejuice, however, believes that Lydia is only wasting her time. Regardless, the two of them work together to uncover the object's mysteries.

Back to School

After a bizarre summer, Lydia is finally enrolled into a private high school in Connecticut. Like every high school, it comes with its ups and downs, but Lydia decides to make the most of it.

Sentimentality

Lydia loses the polaroids on her wall after Beetlejuice recklessly enters her room, creating a large gust of wind that sends the photos out her window in the process. Livid, Lydia kicks Beetlejuice out of her room, causing the demon to go bitter. Eventually, he goes on a quest to find Lydia's missing polaroids and finds that they are one of a few memories she has left of her mother.

This is Halloween

Based on Laugh of the Party and Bizarre Bazaar. Lydia decides to throw a Halloween party that could outrival Claire's. The family helps by pitching in some surprisingly good ideas. Beetlejuice, on the other hand... isn't exactly pleased with the direction the party's going in, and decides to give the it a bit more "scare factor".

Life In The Fast Lane

Based on Dragster of Doom and Driven Crazy. Lydia is nervously excited to take her driver's test in the next couple of weeks. Beetlejuice offers to let Lydia borrow his car and practice her driving in the Netherworld. From there, he slowly begins to encourage Lydia to just let loose and drive, which... came with mixed results. Meanwhile, a super fast roller-skating demon begins to terrorize the Underworld, claiming the land as her territory. Lydia, using all the knowledge that she has in driving, challenges the demon to a race, in hopes of kicking her out of the Underworld.

“A mysterious figure known as the "Leatherman" would routinely travel a 365-mile circuit in the 1800s for no discernible purpose. Although no one ever discovered his name, place of origin, or motivation for making the journey, he rose to fame as a well-liked local hero.

In all types of weather and during all four seasons, the Leatherman wore a boot suit—an outfit made out of worn-out leather boots and ties that weighed over 60 pounds. Locals could determine the time based on where he was because he slept in caves and kept his schedule so well. Every 34 days, the Leatherman completed the journey between the rivers of the Hudson and Connecticut, passing through 40 little towns.

Though he never spoke beyond a few grunts in English or French, adults and children in the town looked forward to his visits. When the Leatherman stopped by a home, it was considered an honor, and schoolchildren stayed on their best behavior in hopes of being chosen to bring the Leatherman food when he passed their campuses.

After he perished, so many people visited the Leatherman's roadside grave that the local historical society decided to move it farther inland to avoid potential accidents. When the body was exhumed for reburial in 2011, many thought DNA testing might help solve the mystery of who he was.

However, those hopes were dashed when they opened the casket to find that the remains were missing. Now, the Leatherman is shrouded in even more mystery: no one knows who he was or where he is.”

Asuka had never cared about being an only child because she made friends extremely easily. She was six when she met Faye Weaver, and the two were absolutely inseparable. She liked the other Weavers (and Briar) just fine, but Faye was undoubtedly her person. Unfortunately, around the time she was thirteen, her father got a job that required them to move to a different state, and the two were, unfortunately, forced to say goodbye. She swore she'd write, and she did send a few letters before she got too busy with school and extra curriculars.

High school was fine for Asuka; she was very friendly and outgoing, not displaying your standard only child traits. She played tennis for a few years, as well as spending her down time at the mall with friends. Every summer, she'd offer Japanese classes, trying to save up for a car and college as time went by, and sometimes would even offer extra lessons during the school year if it didn't interfere with her studies or games.

If you asked her, she'd say it was fate; Asuka had applied to a variety of schools more focused on nursing, and she just happened to get accepted to one back in Connecticut; and as luck would still have it, it was the same school Faye was going to. She was delighted to be reunited with her best friend from all those years before, and it was as if no time had passed, the way they immediately fell into a familiar pattern with each other. While Faye was more focused on midwifing, Asuka set her sights on becoming a triage nurse. Her attitude was bright, and bubbly, and she could endure a lot of angry attitudes despite the fact she was just doing her best.

After their schooling was done, Asuka decided to stay with Faye; not literally, as she didn't move into the Weaver house, but she got a small apartment and didn't want to move anywhere else, getting a job at a nearby hospital as well as joining a small local tennis club. She was very happy, meeting up with Faye as often as possible without completely taking over her time, and even trying a few dating opportunities. It was fun, but no one really felt right, either. So while dating casual was a lot of fun, she never found anyone she could see settling down with. That didn't bother her though; she kind of had a full schedule, anyway.

When Faye mentioned trying to track down her brother, Asuka immediately volunteered to go with her. The last thing she needed was for something bad to happen to the best friend she'd ever had, not to mention it felt like they had just managed to be reunited, and she didn't want to lose that. She wasted very little time subletting her apartment and packing as much as she could for the trip (including her bunny, Killua), and was ready to start this new adventure with her best friend. However, it didn't really wind up as planned.

Huntsville isn't ideal, of course - no one would say it is - however, Asuka feels needed. It seems like the retirement home just lost a nurse, so she immediately had somewhere to fit in. She's not sure if she wants to stay in the commune, but Faye's brother is there, and she wants to stay with Faye. Her outlook hasn't changed, and she loves to chatter away with the residents of the nursing home as well as the people at the clinic, where she can also often be found seeing if they need an extra hand with anything, even if that's just keeping someone company with small talk.

“The Last Word” by Gerri Lewis

“The Last Word” is the first in the “Deadly Deadlines Mysteries” series. Winter Snow is an obituary writer for hire in the comfortable, charming, real-life town of Ridgefield, Connecticut about an hour and half outside of New York City. She gets a peculiar request from Lottie Arlington, the wealthy philanthropist in town. She asks for Winter to write an obituary for her that HAS to be finished in three days. Of course Winter finds this a bit odd as Lottie is still very much alive and appears to be in good health.

A day after a hurricane passes, Winter goes to Lottie’s house to check on her and finds her unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. And that’s where the mystery begins. Winter thinks Lottie was pushed, wondering if she was feeling threatened and that’s why she wanted the obituary. The police originally think it’s an accident until they don’t and Winter becomes the prime suspect.

And then of course Winter sets out to find the guilty party.

In general, I thought this was okay. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but I don’t think it was very memorable. I think the overall mystery was good in the sense of the who and the why. I also like that the initiating incident wasn’t a murder as it so often is. The slow burn romance with one of the cops is cute, but also seems ill-advised. Like he doesn’t know that she didn’t do it.

But also in the same vein, it felt very convoluted. There are a lot of characters to keep track of. There is a whole character that is waste of space and I really hope comes more into play in the future. It also drifts toward the over-descriptive. I don’t need to know every right and left turn that Winter takes to get wherever she is going almost every time she goes anywhere. I don’t need to know that the marinara sauce is vegetarian. Like why are you telling me this (more than once) when marinara is in and of itself vegetarian? It feels like the author is trying to hit a word count.

True, we haven’t bought our Halloween candy yet, but as loyal fans of the holiday romance genre, we are prepared to start the most wonderful time of the year today. With Hallmark Channel’s annual Countdown to Christmas and Great American Family’s Great American Christmas now in full swing, and Lifetime and other networks loading their sleighs, we’re here to help you choose between the season’s many offerings. Each Thursday, we’ll spotlight the movie that should be at the top of your weekend list and preview why other debuts will make you merry.

THE ONE TO WATCH

Bringing Christmas Home (Premieres Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 pm on Great American Family)

The holiday movie genre has made a tradition of honoring veterans for their service, and this film is another worthy salute — with mystery and romance to boot. Jill Wagner stars as army intelligence officer-turned-military history professor Caroline, whom antique shop owner Russell (Paul Greene) enlists to help return a recently-acquired WWII dress uniform jacket to the hero’s family in time for Christmas. A love letter and photo found in a pocket sweeten their mission to uncover who this man was, what happened to him after he was listed MIA, and whether he ever reunited with the gal who wrote him endlessly (juicy twist alert!).

Fans of the Mystery 101 franchise will enjoy seeing Wagner play another smart sleuth. But beyond that, she’s riveting in the scenes where Caroline, who’s trying to adjust to civilian life with help from her army buddy Alton (Simon Arblaster), recounts a Christmas Eve they spent in the desert. As always, Greene’s vibe is as warm and soothing as a cup of cocoa. You believe that Russell would be chill enough to leave his plucky sister Jules (Jess Brown) alone at their store during the holiday rush, and that he’d be patient with Caroline, who’s afraid her past will scare off future happiness. As Caroline points out, not every story has a happy ending; you’ll root for hers to.

Runner-Up: Ms. Christmas Comes to Town

Keep those tissues handy! In our runner-up pick, Ms. Christmas Comes to Town (premiering Thursday, Oct. 26 at 8 pm, repeating Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10 pm on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries), Barbara Niven plays Gale, a beloved host of the Holiday Shopping Channel, who receives a terminal diagnosis and decides to retire — but not before taking her “Ms. Christmas” act on the road for a farewell tour. She wants to train Amanda (Erica Durance), the daughter she never had, to be her on-air successor, Ms. Holiday. And since Gale is hiding her illness, she makes Travis (Brennan Elliott), the nurse traveling with them, pull a double shift as Mr. Winters. It’s great to see Niven, a scene-stealer in the network’s Hannah Swensen movies, take center stage. She and Durance have co-starred before, so their affection for each other feels real, as do their eventual tears. Just know the movie brings tidings of comfort and joy, not sorrow.

The Best of the Rest…

Mystic Christmas (premieres Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) When globe-trotting marine veterinarian Juniper (Jessy Schram) spends the holidays in Mystic, Connecticut helping her college roommate Candace (Patti Murin) rehab Peppermint the harbor seal, it’s also a chance for Juniper to reignite her spark with Candace’s brother, George Bailey-esque pizza restauranteur Sawyer (Chandler Massey). Schram and Massey have the weekend’s winningest chemistry, and you’ll definitely want to add a boat parade to your yuletide itinerary after this.

Christmas By Design (premieres Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) In need of inspiration for a Christmas Eve fashion show/contest, luxury designer Charlotte (Rebecca Dalton) reluctantly heads home and agrees to attend the town’s “Elfcapades” events with mechanic/mannequin Spencer (Jonathan Keltz). In exchange, the thoughtful, handsome widower gets a buffer between him and the local single ladies whose engines he rightfully revs.

Joyeux Noel (premieres Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel) Two newspaper colleagues, green idealist Lea (Jaicy Elliot) and seasoned Grinch Mark (Brant Daugherty), are sent to France to unearth the untold love story behind a popular painting of a holiday market where, legend says, people meet their soulmates. As they retrace the enigmatic artist’s steps…well, you can guess!

Journey to Christmas (premieres Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 pm on Great American Family) Kindhearted model Cali (Ash Tsai, charming even when delivering the weekend’s most stilted dialogue) embarks on a cross-country road trip with hired driver Jack (Joey Heyworth), who took the gig to avoid spending the holidays with his family and ex-fiancée. Unfortunately, a storm strands them in Illinois with his relatives. Unsurprisingly, it’s the diversion they both needed.

Above the healer’s quarters the moon streamed dimly through the windows— the waxy glow was nearly swallowed by the dark and those who stood around called it an omen. He was something beautiful, with wisdom in his viridescent gaze and features rounded in fat that match those that sit sharply on his mother’s face. He’ll become just like her, they whisper around him and the words fill the room with a buzz like the swarming of flies. It is from her grip that they wrestled the child from, (it is possessiveness and not anything maternal that brought him close to her chest) and they allow her to place one mark upon the infant, the last tie between mother and son before she was once again banished. She gave him the name Vincent, and he bears the mark like Cain’s— for the child of a dark witch being raised within the confines of a coven will never be given free reign, not when the ground where her ties to her coven were severed stayed pitted and glassy with obsidian.

He’ll become just like her, the phrase is pressed to his skin as he grows older, as steady as a heartbeat and it lingers as an echo. They never tell him her name, but just that as a witch she had bared the same gifts: a touch that brought forth flame and the ability to draw and manipulate emotions of those around him. Vincent, who was smaller than the rest, but whose elbows mercilessly brought blood from noses that got too close and who scrabbled against the earth like a wild animal until he was pulled apart by the witches who had adopted him. It was with a wide berth from the others that he grew, treated as though he was something dangerous: a molotov instead of a boy, and with a loose-tooth smile, he became as volatile as they feared him to be.

Flame came with ease, he could manipulate even the wettest of tinder to spit out smoke and then catch. Buildings and trees licked up with the element, fire is something hungry and ferocious, but Vincent was a child whose appetite would never be sated, he was always starving. Destruction was enjoyable but he found that he revelled further in aftermath. Walking through the shell of a building, around timbers that stood shakily holding up what remained of a roof, his fingers were always stained black with soot. He carried charcoal in his pockets and admired the shadowy parts that others were so afraid of. Consequence came, but an empath never bears the true weight of his crimes, not when he could manipulate hard spirits and soften wicked tempers with the twist of emotion. It made him slyer, and far more cunning than any child should be. They called him Saint and they meant it as an insult, but his grin was too wide and too bright to be tarnished— the irony amused him and he adopted it for himself.

They thought that he would become like his mother, a woman whose name had been struck from every record and who had been banished completely— and he grew obsessed with her story. She had been a prodigious witch, Saint knew that much, a star pupil with a special interest in lore and ancient history. It had been her research that had filled the coven library with so many books of species that had long died out, or were so rare that they were believed to be gone. He spent hours there, pouring over texts on pages that were yellowed and musty with age, feeling a tie to her as he drew his fingers along the handwritten notes in the margin and committed ancient texts to memory. His father would remain a mystery- a sharp jawed man with a matching gaze to his own. No one ever spoke of him, though he always got the impression it was because no one dared.

It was obsessive, his desire to learn and be the best, he practiced spells and enchantments, he strengthened his tie to his element as he grew older, settling into the belly of a fire while those around him in the coven watched him warily. Saint learned how to manipulate smoke, to carry ill will out into the air with flakes of ash and to make lye out of what remained from his casual destruction. It was his fascination with inflicting harm that worried the witches around him the most, but perhaps not so much as how he delighted at revelling in the heart of his destruction. He grew from a wicked boy to a wicked teenager, a bad seed— but as he began to read more of the writings in the coven library and more of the spells, those who had known his mother declared him to be her twin in character: and all efforts to have rehabilitated the witch were considered a failure.

How strange it was then, to be ousted from a coven for a crime that he had yet to commit. He had been fourteen, just tall enough now that he towered in a room, angry enough that his fire could lick clean to the bone. His mother had clung to the idea of immortality- so much so that she had been willing to barter the very souls of her fellow witches for it: when those in his coven found the notes of such nonsense under his pillow, they banished him without thought. The witch began to wander, careless and cruel, toying with fire that feasted upon fields of dried grass and devastated livelihoods. A whole town fell to ruin at the flick of an errant spark and they blamed it upon devils and gods with power over lightning and he laughed at the idea that it was someone more angelic, someone wielding the name Saint.

Along the way he learned more, picking up spells and artifacts, toying with dark magic and seeking out answers to find what remained of his mother. He didn’t know her name, just that they shared a matching surname and penchant for flame. There were hints along the way, books in places with notes in her handwriting, suggestions for herbs to try and spells to commit to memory. Other witches had done little for him in his life, being something one of them felt like an unjust punishment; a cruel experiment in nature versus nature that had yielded the same, unsatisfactory result. They had treated him as though he was something to be feared, and he had become it.

Though only four months, it was too late when he had found his mother. All leads had taken him to New Orleans, where he sat in sunny patches with grimoires and spell books, reading about a place of neutrality off Maine that his mother had noted several times— it was an island called Manan and she had found it important, but it seemed, as he walked into the home that he had finally discovered to be hers, she had never found her salvation there. It was a vampire that greeted him with a face just like his, stalled in time and visually as old as he was— his mother had had her life and her magic stolen, and in turn become something parasitic.

And yet, a boy who had always sought out his mother felt relieved that she still existed, and she was relieved that he had his name still. Her own was Victoire, and to lose magic after all the sacrifices that she had endured would kill her, this she admitted by her son’s ear and he realized then that it wasn’t their appearances that was the binding element between them, but their hungry desire for power. With her words ringing in his ear, she banished him from her home: she was not a witch that craved kinship from her own kind and vampires cared little for the survival of their children, and Victoire was both.

Still, she had proved useful. Her grimoire, dusty and unused had one last spell- a ritual that promised to still time and grant him the immortality he craved. A cruel heart held the dark desire for symbolism, to be remembered in the coven that he had begun his life in ways that would be seared into their history. Saint Corvin would be a devil’s name, and it would be spat in the dark and it would be used to scare those who grew too bold in shadows. Vengeance existed in the form of three witches stolen from their beds, manipulated and tricked to follow projected cries into the woods— they had thought themselves about to be heroes, to save a child that needed them, and instead they walked into a trap. Saint chose the crater that his mother had performed her own ritual in, finding strength in the stone that was black and shiny like glass, summoning forth the magic as blood beaded on pale throats like rubies, before spilling down the fronts of white night gowns.

The great power that he craved did not come- death only amounts to death, he spent the next few weeks simmering in rage. He deserved more, he believed that he had nearly closed his hands around the throat of what he believed to be the ultimate of gifts and in turn life had throttled out what strength he had left in him. There was no spell in the world, no incantation that would repair what had been done, blood stained his hands and he cared little about it, baring his teeth and pressing forth to spill more.

He was sixteen then, hungrier and crueler than anyone of that age had any right to be. The grimoire spoke of something else: of a past that had been locked away- under a portrait of his father, now the spitting image of himself was a name. Grimm. He'd of chased it, looking for answers like a dog spinning after its tail, but the beasts of the Grimm family found him first. Cornered and snarling, Saint snapped at their heels as they drew him to New York- to a home and a family that he had never known before.

They mistook him for a wolf, it was easy to do so: most beasts carry a familiar haunt in their cautious eyes. A month passed, then another, and it came to light that the witch drew embers from underneath tables, hiding it away lest he become his father's new pet. His new family took to him in different ways, the younger siblings were curious about magic and he bled into them like pigment in water– his older brother and their mother were always quick to remind him that he was a bastard: that a witch in a family of wolves had just as much use as a flame in the midst of a sea. Still, he grew and he thrived. New York had a plethora of materials and the Grimm family influence gave him power that he could never have come to himself.

Saint, now a young man, who was more attuned to smoke than fire, drawn to ash and smoulder over the brightness of fire, who longed to toy with shadow, began to continue his journey in dark magic. Blood was a medium for necromancy, and mixed with flame he could gather up strength and hold onto it as he would the rungs of a rope ladder: each step closer to immortality. Saint’s mission brought him to promptly razing the coven of his birth, before settling into one of the boroughs of the city. He's found work at a funeral home, directing day to day operations before settling in at home to study works of magic. As a witch he seeks several things above all: more power, infamy, and life immortal. He is still toying with new spells at all times, testing the boundaries and stretching to new limits, but every day with teeth bared in a wicked, hungry smile, he lives to his infallible motto. Carpe omnia; seize everything.
