Jojos bizarre adventure part 4 to 6...

Well, I just finished Jojo's, and I have no idea where to start. WHAT AN ANIME, WHAT A SERIES, AND HOW AMAZING EVERYTHING WAS. I started watching the series because of the memes and ended up watching one of the most incredible anime series ever. Seriously, what an amazing freaking anime, I enjoyed it like crazy. Let's break it down: Josuke's season was one of my favorites; I really liked the plot, and throughout the season, I was trying to figure out how the heck they were going to beat Kira, and while it didn't have as many memorable fights, the final battle is spectacular. Giorno's season also impressed me; it was the one I was most looking forward to, and it was totally worth it. The fights were great, and the ending too. Plus, the soundtrack for this season is exquisite, and it also has one of my favorite moments of the entire series and one of the reasons I started watching: The Torture Dance. And finally, Jolyne's season... it was my favorite of them all :v, great fights, great opening, spectacular villain (actually my favorite in the series), and with a final battle that can only be described as overwhelming. Bro, Pucci's stand is the most fucking cataclysmic power I've ever seen in any medium, I literally felt genuine distress watching the entire fight against Pucci. I'm trying to think of any character with a similar power, but I can't think of any (Edit: Antispiral too, cof cof); he literally reset the damn universe XD. One thing I loved about this series was the deaths, and those who have followed me for a long time will know that one of the things I hate most in an anime (especially in One Piece) is fake deaths, but in this damn show, they keep killing off all the protagonists and secondary characters, man, which, although it left me with a high degree of depression (Shigechi, Iggy, Avdol :''''v), I must say made the situations and fights completely adrenaline-filled. I was stressed out in every season, not knowing who they were going to kill off in each episode. The death that hit me the hardest was Shigechi's; the final moment gave me so much anxiety, and the fact that he ended up dying just before telling his friends... Now, my favorite fight was Everyone vs. Father Pucci, my favorite stands were Silver Chariot and Crazy Diamond, my favorite villain was Pucci, my favorite Jojo was all of them (Especially Josuke), my favorite jobros were Polnareff and Koichi, and lastly, my favorite season was Stone Ocean. The only thing I didn't like is that now I'm left wanting more. I could describe my experience with the following phrase: I don't know what I'm watching, but I can't stop watching it. What a great series.

Part 4 because it only has a few villains (a lot of them being smaller villains and later being redeemed like Rohan, Yukako and Tamami) and it has the least amount of main character deaths

I've said it before but the main reason I love jojo in general has more to do with how fun it is to watch araki evolve his approach to storytelling and his art style from part to part...like jojo is silly and fun and by no means a perfectly executed story, but I think araki is uniquely radical in his creative approach in a way that's thrilling to watch! a big part of my enjoyment of sbr stems from the fact you can tell it's the product of 20 years of araki experimenting with his approach to major & minor character writing, fight construction, pacing, weaving in & delivering on themes, working with setting & his chosen genre in an engaging way, using paneling & art style to create atmosphere, etc. and he's able to deliver on nearly every front. it's by no means a perfect story (beginning is painfully slow, the zombie horse & magic thread that appeared exactly once, final fight happening AFTER the story's emotional climax, etc.), but when considered within the context of parts 1-7, it's his most well-rounded & complex work by far imo - that's played a huge role in my enjoyment of it!

and then of course there's specific aspects to steel ball run that are kind of like catnip to me personally!

johnny not being an easily likeable protagonist, and who has a character arc more complex than "selfish guy learns about the meaning of friendship" - too much to go into for this ask, but I particularly love how at the start of sbr johnny's perspective on his life and purpose is coming from a place of deep pain & a feeling of helplessness over his ability to exert control over his life...there's no short, clear path to fixing the psychological impact of his cold upbringing, the guilt & sense of responsibility he felt for his brother's death, the way the artificial sense of self-worth he obtained through celebrity backfired horribly on him, the abuse and abandonment he experienced after he was paralyzed. his arc isn't about trying to leave all this behind and transforming him into a perfect, fixed person - it's a bumpy road!! even as he grows, throughout sbr we see him continue to be selfish, irresponsible, lacking in confidence, overly reliant on others, even violent. and of course he has to grapple with obtaining and losing the corpse parts over & over again, and what that implies for his internal sense of meaning. I think the conflict he has about valentine's offer in their final fight (trying to avoid spoilers about specifics but AUGH) is one of my favorite character moments in all of jojo because it perfectly illustrates how despite all the growth he's experienced with gyro during the race, there is still a part of him that will have to fight against the impulse to let his pain, guilt, and perceived lack of agency drive his actions. by the end of sbr he's become a person who is more at peace with himself, someone with a quiet confidence and sense of purpose and agency he's had to build from scratch - he's taken the long way, but the shortest road is the detour. best jojo forever TO MEEEE

johnny & gyro as co-protagonists as opposed to primary and secondary characters. they are hands down the best written jojo & jobro duo, one really could not carry the story without the other. the way gyro's lessons and how they're delivered (and to an extent, tusk's evolution as well) represent key points in the growth of johnny and gyro together and as individuals....crying wailing gnashing my teeth because there's a million things I could say about this but I'd like to direct everyone to this wiki entry because whoever wrote it composed an entire essay that says it better than I ever could

the sbr race as a west to east affair instead of an east to west affair, it turns the western genre on its head a bit in a way I find really satisfying. steel ball run masquerades as a story about adventure, but its emotional core is about the characters taking the long way back home to themselves - to do this, they have to go far away from their physical roots (both east of the race's starting point) and must take a long time to return. it adds an even more bittersweet element to johnny's final action of delivering gyro's body back to his family in naples. beyond being the decent thing to do, it's an act that honors the work gyro did to figure out how the ability and duty that's been placed on his shoulders can be used in a way that doesn't require him to abandon the compassion, optimism, and even the struggles that make him who he is - this is the emotional weight & character significance the act of returning home holds in sbr's story

the side characters are genuinely interesting, they have their own fleshed out reasons for being in the race that are actually relevant to the story. they're not all perfectly executed (justice for soundman -_-) but it makes for a much more dynamic feeling cast and a more engaging read!

the mid-to-late sbr art style is my favorite by far. it feels so cinematic and adds a sense of drama that's so fitting for the setting and genre! the real turning point for me was gyro's fight with ringo roadagain, where araki starts using more close up, highly detailed "shots" and adds dialogue only sparingly to create a palpable sense of tension appropriate for a shootout. it's spectacular

once you get past the first like 30 chapters (ouch) almost every fight has a sense of relevance and purpose to the larger story. sbr's fights might not be the most bombastic in concept compared with other jojo parts, but I much prefer a fight where the stakes can really be felt to a fight that seems to be stuck in there so araki can explore some fun stand idea. sbr gets bonus points in my book for having some incredible fights where the emotional stakes are especially high - sugar mountain arc's shootout with the eleven men, civil war, johnny vs valentine to name a few!

ARGH I could go on and on but these are just some of the big reasons sorry for the essay ily 💕💋

honestly, i think i love (or at least like...) every single part, a lot of these are really close together, like if i could id put 5 and 7 both into first place, and then 6 and 4 both in second. but that's not how rankings work! so i had to really pick apart all of them for little details that would make it go above or below another.

putting 5 above 7 kinda hurts because, objectively, yes steel ball run is an INCREDIBLE story. even completely outside of the jojo framework it is genuinely amazing. but when it comes down to it... golden wind just means more to me personally, like its more near to my heart. this could be entirely because ive just known it longer. like i just finished sbr VERY recently so maybe it has to simmer in my mind more but idk. see i was (and still kinda am) one of those people who obsessed over EVERY part 5 character, and something like that... it sticks with you. okay. you never recover from that.

in part 6 and 4 i have the OPPOSITE problem, where i have pretty much equal personal feelings so i have to go off of objectivity. part 6 is just better written than part 4, like factually. what part 4 is really missing is something part 6 excels at, and that's character development. the character development in parts 6 + 7 (and also 8 probably, but im only on like chapter 30) is just incredible, and before that jojo had been... kinda lacking in that regard. and that pretty much is what boosts stone ocean over diu, diu is amazing and compelling and is a really good story, but stone ocean is also all of those things and has more development.

i think if this was a points scale, sdc and pb would have a pretty equal amount of points, both in completely different areas. stardust crusaders is better story-wise, especially compared to phantom blood, but the thing is is i just.... dont care about it very much? i will admit, it's been a minute since i've watched it, on a revisit my opinions will prob change but i've simply fallen out of love with the characters. which isnt something that has happened for the later parts! but phantom blood is boring. it's a much less interesting story, it has much less interesting characters and stories, but i like it more. i can't exactly pinpoint why, i just think about it more than i do part 3. i think generally im really into the parts in the victorian era... they get darker, more gritty and edgy, in a way i rlly like.

part 2 doesnt even come close to the other ones though. not at all. i NEVER think about part 2. it has the same quality as part one, which is not very good but i don't even like it! i neeever think of part 2. thinking about the jojos? joseph never even crosses my mind. thinking abt the jobros? who the hell even is caesar. thinking about the antagonists? i dont even remember kars' personality. it has been a looong time since ive watched part two, but it's been even longer since i've watched part one and i still like it more!! sorry part 2 stans, it is just noooot my thing.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 9: The JOJOLands - Chapter Round-Up (Chapter 3)

I saw this chapter as soon as it came out but I waited to talk about it because I wanted some thoughts to marinate and others to crystallize. I don’t want to spoil anything so find my thoughts below the “Keep reading”, see ya down there!

Right off the bat, Araki blesses us with this bold spread of Jodio crossing Rohan’s compound with Rohan right there. We’ll get back to Jodio soon but can I talk about how amazing the art has been for Jojolands? Araki feels at the peak of his game and the energy reminds me a lot of Oda at the height of Wano arc. Near the end of Jojolion the art was quite rightly pretty cramped, it did a great job of showing the suffocating nature of Wonder of U and the Calamities. But now, Araki gets to let loose and really give us a sense of the openness of Hawaii. It’s betriful and almost every page has incredibly striking art. 

Now going back to Jodio. He’s absolutely fearless. He doesn’t have a sense of risk for himself and that makes him bold. He knows that if he’s caught now it’ll only be him that suffers the consequences. Or he thinks that, as he doesn’t know about Heaven’s door. This disregard for consequences also makes him very confident and he needs to be able to pull off a heist right under Rohan’s nose. Jodio actually gets more nervous seeing Rohan’s art than he does hiding in plain sight.

Dragona and crew make their way into the house and Usagi sees a cat loitering around. By the way, I want to stop and admire the art again. Whereas the wide open shots are beautiful, these character centric panels drip with so much personality. Paco’s looking ahead, Dragona’s on the lookout for trouble and Usagi has already been distracted. 

Dragona warns them not to steal anything but they’re already deep into the loot. These guys are liabilities. But what they’re stealing also reveals a lot about them. Usagi is pure Id, stealing what appears to be bottles of champagne. Paco on the other hand, seems to be going for cash and easily sellable artifacts like small statues and clocks. Dragona warns them off again. For the second time. Usagi drops it and focuses on something else.

Usagi is really careless, again, he’s the biggest liability they have. He cuts up a painting and doesn’t bother to cover up the damage. Paco on the other hand still pockets the cash. It seems like to me that Paco is desperate for money. He’s probably going through some unfortunate circumstances related to it as he is quite often agreeable to playing the quiet soldier while having a pretty big personality. Right away, I love these Jobro’s so much. We haven’t had such a solid supporting cast, in my opinion, since Part 6. Gyro was obviously in a class of his own but he was just one character. Right out of the gate we have three strong supporting characters and an incredibly strong antagonist that will no doubt turn into an ally in Rohan.

And speaking of Rohan, I really like this idea of different sects of stands developing. One in Japan and one in America. Like a disease, it spreads from person to person and consigns them to a bizarre life whether they want it or not. It’s just like the Jostar legacy. We get a scene setting up what I’m assuming is the main plot of the story where these four will team up with Rohan to fulfill whatever his objective is. 

Then we get the cat. It’s peak cat design. It’s implied it’s a stand as they can all see it and they never considered that it might not be. If so, it’s a brilliant way to show that Rohan has powers to the main cast and it also seems to bring the two groups together against a common third enemy. However, if it’s a Iggy situation, then I would be sooooo down for that. A cat stand user that just does whatever it wants would be beautiful. I could cry just thinking about it. Araki, you beautiful weird bastard, please make it come true.

Moving on, I want to touch on this incredible sense of tension Araki’s been able to build. The paneling and the page layout lends itself to creating such a cinematic sense of tension it feels like it’s borrowed straight from the best thrillers. Actually Jojolands does remind me of Thief a lot so far. Araki has always been good with horror but I’m glad he’s also putting so much focus into tension, it’s such an integral part of heists. 

And then we see Rohan get past Jodio as he was too absorbed in what he was looking at. And we see Jodio sweat. Which he didn’t while walking in plain sight of Rohan. So what makes this any different? Two things I’d say. The first is his sense of personal responsibility where he doesn’t want to be responsible for other misfortunes or maybe more specifically Dragona’s, i’m not sure yet. And the second being that he screwed up. It’s a mistake and he doesn’t like making those. 

Jodio warns them and notices that the cat isn’t Rohan’s. At the same time Paco and Usagi find the safe and pressure Dragona to open it while Jodio pleads to leave. This speaks to Jodio’s careful nature but also reveals a lot about Dragona when they cave. Dragona has to be the leader of a bunch of wildcards and does their best to keep them in check. And has so far made the correct decisions but it looks to be getting to them. I think that’s why Jodio might step in, to hep Dragona with the burden, especially of Usagi, who seems to exacerbate Paco’s desire’s too. Dragona also seemed to be a capable leader before Usagi came along. I can’t help but feel like Usagi was meant to sabotage them and maybe use his power to steal away a copy of the diamond if possible.

Rohan attempts to go inside but Jodio distracts with his stand which we learn a little more about. It seems like sharp needles are at the ends of the rain drops. Like pine needles or something. Finally they get the diamond but see what looks like an equally important piece of volcanic rock in the safe, which is probably a big piece of the plot’s puzzle. As they leave they get attacked by the cat and Jodio realizes Rohan can see stands. This was a great tension filled chapter that unveiled a lot about the characters and set up pretty well for what seems to be the plot of this part.  I don’t want to speculate too much so I’ll leave it at that and see y’all next time!

I'm so insane about stone ocean and the way everyone clowned on it for being the worst part of jojo for YEARS because despite there being some obvious pacing issues (not a trait exclusive to part 6 btw) the cast is genuinely?? Fucking great?? Jolyene might be my favourite jojo and her Ermes and F.F. round out to be such a FUN main trio. Litterally part 4 vibes.

I'm willing to entertain every conspiracy theory about araki's editor and Jump fucking knee capping it at every point bc it was 2000 and men (derogatory) were loosing their mind about their being too many female main characters.

BECAUSE half the issue is that Ermes and F.F. are just NOT ALLOWED to be in the part half as much as any jobros in previous parts are. You don't get to see the chemistry the cast has because they're constantly being shoved to one side to let the men get the spotlight. You don't get to have fun and goofy moments of down time because we can't have all these WOMEN taking up all the space on page can we???

I loved that scene where F.F. and Jolyne were queuing up for breakfast and F.F. talks about doing things the opposite way go get people of her back and ends up causing so much chaos they get to skip the queue. That's the goofy bs that's missing from SO because the women aren't allowed to just breathe on the page the same way the male cast was. Makes me so fucking sad bc I love the SO girls they're GOONS

4. Best jobro or side protagonist?

My part 5 bias is showing but it’s Bruno for me. His relationship to his team, his fights, how tragic and bittersweet his story is, his weirdness, his character design, the way him and Giorno work as protagonists together, his sheer determination and the way he ties into the themes of part 5 auggghhhh it’s so good. I wish I could put my thoughts into words better but yeah Bruno is good <3

Also I may think Bruno is the best jobro/side protagonist but I also love my silly gun boy Mista and my traumatized spinoff plague boy Fugo and the rest of the bucci gang with all my heart and tbh Gyro’s probably a better character than Bruno but I would’ve needed to reread sbr to make sure so I just went with Bruno okay moving on

Fugiomis (and all three “component” ships) is my absolute favorite ship, just. The way it has taken over my brain is ridiculous lmao I need to get better at drawing/writing so I can contribute to it because there’s not enough stuff with the three of them.

Other favorite ships of mine are naratrish, mistrish, gionara, fugonara, literally any combination of giogio, mista, fugo, nara and/or trish tbh let the mafia teens kiss, jonaeriwagon (I just rewatched part 1 and oh my god they are in love your honor), gyjo, bruabba, josuyasu, foolymes and caejose (can you tell I have a weak spot for jojo x jobro?)

17. Color schemes or early designs you prefer?

I don’t know if I prefer it, but I really do love Dio’s outfit from the Phantom Blood movie, I hope it returns as a costume in asbr or another game someday.

Speaking of asbr I also really love part 1 Dio’s default outfit from the original asb, his anime look is also great ofc but I just honestly like this more.

I also kinda miss Mista’s white boots from the manga, asb and eoh. I do think the anime’s dark boots look great and I don’t think the white boots would’ve looked as good in the anime but still.

25 . Random headcanon or opinion about character of your choice

I’m currently rewatching part 2 and oh my god Santana’s kinda terrifying? Like the way he contorts his body and possesses people (and the possessed say it feels pleasant like. what). It’s really cool in a really disturbing eldritch abomination way that makes him a very effective (and kinda underrated) villain imo.
