Caryl Fanfiction Recs - Celebrating single-fic authors (part 1)

Happy Sunday, dear fellow carylers! Today I bring you the first part of a list that I have been preparing for some time.

Every fandom has its big stars: incredible gifmakers who everyone recognizes their work from a distance; amazing artists who draw fanart and edit fanvideos that deserve to be in a museum; and talented and prolific fanfic authors who are better storytellers than the actual canonical writers/creators. All of them deserve all the praise and love in the world, but, in reality, even the most popular ones don't get the feedback they truly deserve. Now, what about those fans who only create one thing for the fandom? Just one art, one video, one analysis, one fic? Where are the compliments for them?

Let's Talk Whump No.11

Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community. I’m Malice and I’ll be your host. 

Today we have @zillstar13 joining us to share their whump story!

Good to have you here, Abraham! Let’s start with a fact about yourself?

I collect all sorts of things. From antique dolls, to rocks, to old bottles, to rusty metal trash, to Halloween decorations. 

And what does whump mean to you?

A story or art piece centered around a character being hurt in some way, especially if it is posted to the internet or put in a zine. 

My writing is whump. Dracula is whump. The doodles of Marie Antoinette I drew in elementary school are whump. It's very vague and fluid, just how I like it. 

How did you find the whump community? What made you want to join? 

Tumblr. My friend Mac N Cheese supported my exercises in writing whump before I was bold enough to post anything. He doesn't write whump (as of right now, I'm trying to get him hooked) but has been beta reading my writing since I started posting.  

Has your view on whump changed since you joined? Are there tropes you now love/hate that you didn't at first? Maybe your choice of OC vs Fandom? Or even your style ie going from mainly writing to gifmaking or art?

I used to hate most vampire whump. My first series, Our Man Flint, was a vampire whump story with heavy focus on colonial America period folklore and Puritan beliefs. 

I couldn't stand most modern interpretations of vampires written by people lacking my vast knowledge of Slavic and colonial folklore. But it's grown on me tons since then. 

I still very much prefer folklore vampires, or ones similar to Bram Stoker's Dracula. But modern vampires stripped of historical context can be fun sometimes. I do appreciate how fluid they are as a species. 

I guess Mill coaxed me out of my shell after I coaxed him in the complete opposite direction.

Do you have any favourite whump trope?

I love whump based on religion and folklore. Whether it be real/historical or invented for the story. Spirits, vampires, gods, and whatever else. It is simply fascinating and scratches a particular niche in my brain. 

What is a favourite piece that you've written? Hype yourself up, we want to hear it!

I love all of my work. But at the moment I simply adore Blood Sacrifices. Its position as my favorite will probably have changed by the time this is posted. 

It's an ongoing story about a vampire posing as a pagan god to take advantage of a society practicing human sacrifices. It's very dark for obvious reasons, but human sacrifice is such an interesting concept to me. 

There is a lot of religious abuse, for obvious reasons. Including heavily explored emotional and sexual abuse of one of the priests, and straight up torture of another. I view some of it as dark comedy, but in a truly twisted sense. And it could easily be interpreted as completely serious. 

I haven't gotten to delve into all of the folklore and religion yet, but boy do I have some amazing things planned. 

Religion based whump is so good! Do you mind sharing your writing routine with us?

I write every day, but the amount fluctuates wildly. I mostly write when I'm supposed to be doing something else, like cleaning or eating, but the executive dysfunction is throttling my brain. 

I write a lot in the evening. I drink a lot while writing. But that's incidental as I always have water, tea, coffee, or hot chocolate right on hand. 

Is there anything you struggle with writing? What comes easily for you?

I'm really good at writing emotional abuse, gas lighting, religious abuse, manipulation, and all that sort of thing. Writing is 80% trauma and 20% skill and I'm banking on the trauma, with a splash of purple prose for good measure.

I have a hard time writing about recovery. I write hurt/no comfort. I cannot find it in me to let my traumatized characters recover. Some people find it cathartic, but I'm the opposite. If I'm stuck with my trauma, they are too. I don't vibe with writing healing arcs. 

Is there anything you're working on at the moment? 

I have so many ongoing series, it isn't even funny anymore. I'm participating in the Whumpay event. I passed Whumpril with flying colors and am hoping to keep up the energy. The final chapter of Our Man Flint is slowly being picked away at but I have little motivation at present. 

Do you have any advice for our readers?

Write the most deranged things possible. Project your traumas and insecurities onto all of your characters. Weave pieces of your past, present, and future into the narrative that it can't be separated from you. 

Your writing will be much better if you pour your heart and soul into it. It will feel horribly vulnerable at first, but that does get better. And I enjoy it much more than I ever enjoyed writing popular cliches and random two dimensions ideas.

Hi I've been a big fan of your blog since it was arwensundomiels and your tutorials are always so helpful!!

I have recently started to make gifs of KPOP music videos and fancams but for the life of me I cannot even achieve smooth and crisp gifs like the other KPOP gif makers on here.. I've been making gifs for other fandoms and never struggled like this to get a decent result until KPOP gifs! I read tons of tutorials from Tumblr but nothing made it better.

Even with TS files and screencaping it's still potato quality I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I'm desperate for a solution if you have one!

hii <3 i hope i'm understanding your query correctly so please let me know if ur after something else!

for me i think i subconsciously change my gif style every few days or so based on different gifmakers i see on here; and the result will vary based on whether u want more matte, smooth gifs (which i'm glad to see a resurgence of!) or more sharper, more contrasted vibrant gifs (also super pretty!)

in terms of ts. files, they aren't always super great to use, especially nowadays so wherever possible i would definitely use uhd files instead (but of course they're not easy to find, and most uploaders only focus on female idols so they're more in abundance if thats what u want to gif!). there's no need to use vapoursynth then, and the quality is SUPER nice!

also you can use the topaz upscaler to improve quality but it can be tough to use unless you have a powerful computer, my laptop can't handle it heaps so i don't use it as much 💀

So after Tumblr finally allowed me to post my recent santhony gifset, I want to take a moment to give myself a short pat on the shoulder here and celebrate my gif-making process^^

I always wanted to learn how to make gifs, but I just never had the patience nor a good program to work with. A bit more than a year ago, I saw a post mentioning photopea as a great alternative to photoshop – and as I always wanted to create gifs, I decided to look up some tutorials on how to make gifs with photopea. My first attempts weren’t that great, but I’m glad that I still chose to share most of my gifs - because now I can look back at them and see the process I made, plus I still received a lot of love on my older gifs.

At the same time, I started watching Bridgerton – and as I became obsessed with that show, I used it to practice my gifmaking skills.

Recently, I saw someone like a gifset I made of that scene where Anthony asks Siena to go to the ball with him. When I first started creating gifs, I often made several gifsets in one day and then just scheduled them – which meant that by the time I opened photopea again, I basically forgot how everything worked lol. But the past months I’ve made gifs more regularly and as I felt that I’ve definitely improved, I thought I could redo that santhony gifset again.

So here’s the same shot from my first attempt a year ago, and below my most recent gif.

I really love how smooth the new one looks. I’ve never been a fan of grainy gifs, but I often had to use a noise-filter to make the quality appear somewhat better. I’m glad I found a way to make them look less pixelated but not super grainy either.

Also adore the difference in coloring. The second one looks way richer and warmer. I’m not sure whether I even colored the first gif tbh. I was super careful with coloring and lighting in the beginning, because I didn’t want the gifs to look too saturated. And making them too bright usually just showed how awful the quality was lol

So yeah, I’m really happy with the process I made. Also, I feel like learning to create gifs made me appreciate gif-makers more. I mean, I was always impressed by it, but I also always assumed that once they learned how to do it, it must be quite easy – now I know that every gifset is its own struggle lmao

So that’s also a good reminder to always show support to your favorite gifmakers (and gifmakers in general, of course). And if anyone read all that and also always wanted to make gifs: just give it a shot and keep practicing. I’m so glad I gave this a try – not only because I always wanted to, but also because this is just so much fun :D

As a fellow gifmaker I feel you're pain, Ace. I have no ducking idea what I'm going to do for half of them and I really want to try and be a completionist this year so ooof it's going to be a struggle but I'm going to do my best 😭. I feel extra sorry for you since you were planning on doing compilation sets so that's even more examples to come up with. At least there's time to plan, I suppose. I'm going to have to get my thinking cap on otherwise some might have to be a bit of a stretch 😂.

Yes! Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only gifmaker who is struggling right now. The prompts are great for writing. Not so much for gifmaking. There are way too many days where I can't come up with anything for any of the prompts. And the alternates are helpful either. I like maybe 3 of them.

I might have to change up my plans or just accept that I might not be a completionist this year purely because I can't come up with any scenes to match the prompts. Some of the days I've got a few ideas but not enough for a compilation set. Half of the days I've got nothing at all.

I know the list onl just came out but every previous year I've had least an idea for each day when the prompts got released. Argh! I'm frustrated. Thank god we've got a whole month to plan. Gives me some time to do some serious digging for scenes. It's not gonna be easy that's for sure.

it definitely changes day-to-day, even though it stresses me out to have a lot of projects going at once (skjhdjhs) I enjoy being able to switch around between them and write whatever I'm in the mood for!

5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?

probably truman au. I have big plans for it and I've fleshed out the characters really well and I feel like the trope is PERFECT for alex&henry and it (to my knowledge) hasn't been done before so! I want to do them justice. also it's surpassingly fun to write scenes in script format!!!

6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?

all of them, to a degree (the universal Creative Experience). but I think poetry fic? it deals with some heavier themes and the characters are so special to me (it also deals with a lot of my own personal struggles and features some of my own poetry) so I worry about it being perceived well or being relatable to other people.

7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?

I'm not sure if I will! when I wrote in other fandoms I had a lovely friend that would look them over for me and we'd talk about them, but they don't write for this fandom and I overthink SO much that if someone gives me criticism I may just scrap the entire scene sjkhkjhd. I kind of just post and hope for the best!

8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?

on a steady rotation :D perks of having so many wips that I can just switch it up when I get stuck!

9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?

I'm fully aware I sound like a broken record but definitely poetry fic. i can’t say too much without giving away some of the plot but he’s an older man who can relate to henry in a lot of ways and kind of becomes a part of their story <3 he’s only in a couple of scenes but they’re so important to the story!

10. Which WIP is the sexiest?

hitman alex for SURE, but journalist/escort is definitely a close second.

11. Which WIP is the angstiest?

oh gosh, it's between hitman / abdication / poetry / boxer / and truman ?? but honestly I can't write anything without a little angst, so! I feel like there's so many elements to their dynamic that are just perfect for it (with mandatory happy ending of course)!

12. Which WIP has the best characterisation (in your humble opinion)?

most accurate? probably poetry fic. most fun to write? hitman.

13. Which WIP has the best scene setting (in your humble opinion)?

POETRY!!! it's literally the personification of autumn and warm blankets and falling leaves and old books and alex's cinnamon coffee (of course) and Henry runs a poetry club and they're both so soft and ugh it's just the best ever and I wish I could live in it. (in my own humble opinion).

14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on?

as far as research goes, definitely poetry.

15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?

I'm not really sure. I wrote in another fandom that I always felt like everything I posted had to cater to who was going to read it and it's been extremely liberating to write for RWRB and just post what *I* like or would want to read. I don't really care about hits, but my biggest hope with anything I post is always that it makes someone else feel seen/heard/validated or brightens their day/night a little, the way that so many other fics/art have for me. <3

16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?

YES. I have the angstiest dreams and anytime I hurt my own feelings I wake up and write it down immediately. (ESPECIALLY with hitman and journalist recently).

17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't?

truman au for sure. it's written in alex's pov and we only see henry through script format for the first half. I'm really excited about it, I've never written anything like it before and I think it adds such a cool element to the story (if I can figure out how to format it correctly on ao3 jhskdhj - we'll cross that bridge when we get there I suppose).

coworkers and dogwalker I would consider to be 'funny' fics -- lots of banter and joking with each other and general lightheartedness!

19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process?

not currently, but I LOVED writing June's character in this fic because I have a chronic illness myself and I liked getting to explore it from an outside perspective! I also would love to explore a bit more with henry's dad and their storyline at some point as well.

The drama is still good thankfully. I really appreciated them getting closer step by step. I'm glad to see small and relatable pieces of expressions of Dong Ji. Like...

you know i love this dynamic between him and his friend where he can just stare and his friend be like "ok I get you" lolol. and yes!! that part where he apologised that's soooo unexpected but very Dongjin.

4. A set that flopped but deserved better?

My Kento and Touma 9 panel set

It didn't really flop in general for the numbers I usually get but it is flopping in comparison to every other set I've done in the same style, including my Hana and Sakura set that I put out after it. Honestly, Saber sets just don't really get traction, but that's not going to stop me from making Saber gifs.

5. What is your favorite movie/TV show to gif?

Kamen Rider Saber and King-Ohger right now, but it changes all the time depending on the ideas and the energy I have.

14. How long does it usually take you to make a set?

It really depends. For a basic 10 gif set that's 540 x 304 it'd take me a couple hours, but could take more time if I'm struggling too much with coloring or don't have the patience. More gifs = more time, so sets with panels usually take quite a bit of time. My 9 panel sets can take up to 9 hours to make. I think coloring really impacts the time it takes, as it does take much longer for me to make sets for shows that I find more difficult to color, such as Ultraman Orb which is very green. I also find getting the captures to make the gifs to be very time consuming as well, most of all when I need to get things from multiple episodes and/or series.

{Anyway, I'm sure a lot of you have noticed, but... I have an irl faceclaim now!!! It took me a super long time because I... really wanted to just make my own. And I struggled. God did I struggle. To even find a place to watch stuff and get scs in the first place, much less make stuff, but!!!}

{Look at this. Look at it. It's barely legible at all. And I really wanted to use Yutaka Takenouchi as opposed to Hiroyuki Sanada because: }

{But just, literally every source I could find for watching the movies/dramas/etc. that he starred in were all really fuzzy and low quality with like, 4 pixels to their name. Which resulted in really terrible icons! And the HaNEKOma Cait Sith icons are already muddy like that, so I really didn't want his live action icons to be the same! I don't know how you guys do it, people who use actor faceclaims! I do not know how you get anything to look even remotely crisp!}

Not that I could find anyway, maybe I don't know how the search system for something like this works, either. I had the still icons for Sanada already from a friend that had sent them to me, but I went looking for more and got the gifs from a very talented gifmaker. So yeah. This is what I have. OTL Maybe one day I will understand how all of this works...}

hey dev, i just wanna say you don't have to post this but i thought u should know a couple of things i think are pretty important.

firstly, i love seeing your work in the tags! the psds? fucking gorge. the style itself? chef kisses!!!!!! as someone who gifs, although not that often, i know the struggle of gifmaking but cannot, CANNOT 👏👏👏👏 attest to how much time goes into getting things right just because i have no patience or attention span for those things yet to the point of feeling solid with my work.

secondly, i love that you gif so many different people (even if they've already been done before?) because isn't that what art is? (take an artist who draws or paints. they might draw something with a different stroke or palette, etc) and besides, you might hit that gif angle or set of frames in a way someone else hasn't and vice versa which idk if u remember but i was around for the phase of having reaction folders under /smiling, crying, frowning, etc, and even though i don't gif often, i still value different reactions just the same. it just makes things E A S I E R to line up replies with./

thirdly, please, please don't let gremlins destroy ur love for a fc ESPEC. pedro. he's our internet daddy and he knows it. thirdly, i've lurked on ur stuff foreVER and i'm so happy to see how far you've come as a gif maker.

hello, sam! are you doing well? i have been trying to make gifs for the drama community but i feel like the outreach is so less and as much as i know i should make and learn them for myself, it does get disappointing. i don't know what to do. could you recommend some tips?

hi! doing great thank you! ahh don’t beat yourself up too much, it’s definitely hard to get yourself noticed. especially with what the like to reblog ratios are like these days in tumblr. I can try and give a couple tips and pointers on what I’ve found works for me, but unfortunately there’s no real science to it (I struggle every day figuring out what the masses want to consume, they confuse me to no end with some of the things they choose to give notes to) anyways…let’s dive right into it:

Use some of generic tags for dramas: kdramaedit, kdramadaily, cdramaedit. a lot of people and network/source blogs will check these tags daily and reblog/queue from there.

Going hand in hand, joining some networks like kdramaspace, kdramanetwork, cdramanet, etc. will help get your work to a boarder audience

Interact! Whether that be through network chats, in the tags of posts your reblog from other content creators, sending them DMs/asks, we have such a small community that making some connections and friendships with people can help get your work noticed by more people. Friends tend to support each other after all right?

The easiest way to get your blog kick-started is to gif a currently airing, relatively popular drama. For kdramas at this moment your best bet would be doom at your service. Of course never feel pressured to gif something you don’t like! But if you’re watching and enjoying a drama that’s got a large fanbase, there will be more people checking the tags and looking for content of their favorite scenes. once you establish yourself a little more, your other sets of less popular dramas will gain some traction too (since I find you generally will accumulate new followers for new shows if you gif them consistently and people want to see more)

on the opposite side of the spectrum, if you’re the only person giffing a show you can also get some attention as the sole gifmaker

Queuing/scheduling your sets to be reblogged to your blog at different times of the day to increase visibility across different timezones can also help

Consider opening yourself up for requests! Ask people to send stuff they want to see giffed. You can tag these posts with the drama name you’re looking to take requests for so that watchers of that show are aware

And at the end of the day, gif what makes you happy. I know everyone says gif makers shouldn’t do it for the notes, but we all know notes are our only real source of validation and marker of “success” on this site. but don’t beat yourself up too much either if your sets aren’t getting the numbers you think it deserves—because the issue is likely not on your end at all. have confidence in your own work and it will help you push forward 💖
