Caryl Fanfiction Recs - Celebrating single-fic authors (part 1)
Happy Sunday, dear fellow carylers! Today I bring you the first part of a list that I have been preparing for some time.
Every fandom has its big stars: incredible gifmakers who everyone recognizes their work from a distance; amazing artists who draw fanart and edit fanvideos that deserve to be in a museum; and talented and prolific fanfic authors who are better storytellers than the actual canonical writers/creators. All of them deserve all the praise and love in the world, but, in reality, even the most popular ones don't get the feedback they truly deserve. Now, what about those fans who only create one thing for the fandom? Just one art, one video, one analysis, one fic? Where are the compliments for them?
So this list it's a way to rectify that for single-fic caryl authors. I hope a little bit of love reaches them wherever they are. Thank you for contributing to our fandom!
1. Wait by acaryler [ 9Lives ]
Summary: A new day only begins when the darkness goes away.

2. This is Who We Are by CarylLover [ 9Lives | AO3 | FF.net ]
Summary: Aaron is badly injured and, after the attack of The Wolves, the group at ASZ is left vulnerable. Daryl needs to go out to find more people, but he can't go alone. 3. Weeping Statue by Evilangel [ 9Lives ]

4. Contently Broken by FloraDora [ 9Lives ]

5. We belong by Ithil [ 9Lives ]

He was trying to give her that back. He damn near worshipped her, and she needed to know that.

14. Her Love is Fierce by tiana [ 9Lives ]

Anon who asked me about "sides" in the caryl fandom and which one I place myself on because you believe I "switched sides"/changed my opinions:
I'm not posting your ask because you named people and that's not something I do on my blog or generally agree with. The only instance you'll find me naming or tagging people is in fic recs posts, so that caryl authors who are on Tumblr can read them and be found by readers who'd like to reach out.
If you have a problem with the opinions, feelings and/or behaviors of a particular individual/blog, I ask you to 1) please reach out to them directly so you can express your disagreement or 2) use your block button, so you no longer see content you don't like. I believe that our fandom is big enough to hold every single caryler out there who wants to join in, regardless of their opinions, posts or feelings. People should feel free and safe to post whatever they want, either 'positive' or 'negative'. I have no problem with anyone in the fandom and I respect everyone's opinions, even when I disagree with some stuff I read.
Please, I ask you to not use my ask box to indirectly badmouth, bully or attack any caryler.
That said, the answer to your question is after the cut.
I'm not on either "side" and never have been. I'm just another enthusiastic fan that loves Carol and Daryl. Since joining the Tumblr fandom just before the pandemic (I was a lurker for many years), I've been using my own critical thinking skills and knowledge of AMC's shenanigans to form my own opinions.
I'm confident in TBOC because I believe there are concrete reasons that support how I'm feeling, from Melissa's return, to filming spoilers and rumors, to Tribeca and SDCC. You're free to agree or disagree with my interpretation of these facts, and to feel positive or negative about it.
I also continue to believe that AMC/Gimple hijacked the original caryl spinoff to highlight the richonne spinoff because it follows similar decisions made before to give Rick more screen time at the expense of all the other TWD characters. I believe Melissa had no choice but to opt out of the original spin-off and negotiate new terms to ensure that Carol's (and therefore Caryl's) story was respected and told with integrity. To me, that's why there were things to be sorted out, as she said, and why she lengthily discussed Carol with Zabel and co. even before scripts for the France spinoff were written. She was involved since the beginning, yes, but she only signed on when she got what she wanted. There is no greater supporter of Carol than Melissa and we have known this for years. I'm glad she's back in her own terms. I believe it was a pretty difficult time for her, as she expressed it by basically refusing to promote 11C or the series finale, and by not saying anything about the whole mess on SM, while other cast members/friends such as Laurie Holden and Khary Payton spoke out in her behalf.
I believe AMC tried to make money off just Daryl because he's their original character and it backfired in their faces. They also made a mistake using Norman to save face as he should have been protected from the SM backlash. Norman has never been a reliable narrator and I always take every thing he says with a grain of salt, but I don't think he's intentionally malicious. I appreciate how much he loves Daryl and is considerate of his fans, even when I don't approve of his behavior. I just wish he would keep his frustrating mouth shut. I believe Norman had lots of input in S1 and that he initially thought he could pull it off without Melissa. But there's no Daryl without Carol and no Carol without Daryl. It's crystal clear how much Norman's happy for having Melissa by his side, and how much they love each other and are excited for S2. I'm glad they are reunited, both for them and for us, but I believe everything worked out in the end because Melissa didn't give up on getting what she wanted. I believe she had lots of inputs in S2 and is satisfied and happy with the final result.
So, that's how I believe things have gone these last two years. Again, feel free to agree or disagree with my interpretation of facts. None of us will ever know exactly what happened, but each of us can decide what to believe based on our own judgment of the facts. That's what I do and will continue to do.
In the end, for me, the important thing is that Melissa and Norman are happy and that Carol and Daryl get their hard-earned happy ending. It's everything I ever wanted and I'm going to enjoy it. I hope you enjoy it too.
That's it. Caryl on!

ZA AU/ZA Tuesday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec
Dear fellow carylers, I can't believe I managed to get this far in our project without a single Omegaverse fic rec. So today is for the A/B/O lovers! Mate for Life, written by LeeLeeWoflpack, is posted on 9Lives.
Summary: For a long time, Carol hated the status in which she was born in. It had done nothing but make her life miserable.
Ironically, it took the end of the world for her natural instincts to give her the happiness she's always wanted.
Rated: E Word count: 16.287 (05 chapters) Published: September 12, 2017 (complete)
If you're not familiar with the Omegaverse, dear fellow caryler, you don't need to worry. Our author does a great job explaining its dynamics on the fic. And if you are familiar with it but not a huge fan, I promise it's well integrated into the canon while giving us fanon insights of Carol's past. There's love, sweetness and respect between Alpha!Daryl and Omega!Carol, great nods to important canon moments and the smut is hot and nicely done. A great story that deserves more readers and reviews.

WIP Saturday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec
Dear fellow carylers, today's WIP is from the talented artist and author @alatariel-gildaen. A very interesting TWD X Borderlands crossover that deserves your attention!
Vault of the Savior is posted on 9Lives and AO3.
Summary: Legend has it that the Vault of the Savior will only open for four individuals in the universe at any one time. And Handsome Jack has tracked them all down.
Carol, Daryl, Rick, and Michonne have to navigate the treachery of Hyperion, of bandit clans, monsters, aliens, and of their own pasts to survive Pandora.
Rated: M Word count: 12.940 (04 chapters of?) Published: June 26, 2024 - WIP A lot of people dislike reading crossovers because they don't think they can keep it up or care about characters from different universes. If you are one of them, dear fellow Caryler, let me tell you that the success of a crossover depends entirely on the author knowing how to weave together two different stories, and not on your prior knowledge of them. Believe me, our author has an special talent to it (her TWD/X-Men crossover is incredible and reviewed here), so please give this WIP a try. You're in good hands. I don't play videogames and have no idea of what Borderlands is and I'm hooked! I love the different codenames, backgrounds and motivations behind our characters and I'm very intrigued by the villain's intentions on luring them all to Pandora. Can't wait to see Carol and Daryl's relationship evolve in such a different but equally harsh scenario as the ZA. Plus, this fic gives Rick and Michonne a big spotlight, so if you like Richonne, you're in for a double treat. So far our author is doing a great job writing them, which is difficult after so long writing for a single ship. Let's applaud her for that! I really hope you give this WIP a read, dear fellow carylers! And don't forget to leave a review/kudos. Feedback is love and love keeps our authors motivated to write. Share the love!

Two Caryl fics by Rambling Rose are so good. Broken Mirrors in au non za. It is very long and very good. A version of Sophia is in it. They meet through Sophia… All the King’s Horses is also a AU non za. Both Daryl and Carol meet as single parents. Both have been hurt and they meet. They are on Ninelives, AO3 and FanFiction, I think.
Hi, dear anon! Thanks so much for participating with two classic caryl fics written by our talented baby fic queen @spanishrose2002! All the King's Horses is one of my favorite fics and I'm currently reading Broken Mirrors for the first time! 🥰 All the King's Horses is posted on it's entirety on 9Lives Caryl Archive, but also on Ao3 and FF.net. It's one of my favorite fics, with one of the most beautiful portrays of Daddy Daryl I ever read. His bond with Russ it's so endearing! The way caryl connect and form a big family together is very heart-warming.
Summary: All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put their hearts back together again...Caryl AU. He's a single father with just one concern and a past he'd rather leave behind him. She's a single mother just looking for a new start and an escape from her own past. Everyone knows life is not a fairy tale. Caryl, Mandrea Rating: E / Explicit Chapters: 84 Word count: 199361 Published: April 20, 2014 - COMPLETE Broken Mirrors can be read on 9Lives Caryl Archive, Ao3 and FF.net. Even though I haven't finished it yet, I can say that this fic is a very special one. Rose writes these versions of Carol, Daryl and Sophia with ultimate care and respect. For me, the greatest strength of this story is how they feel like real people, how their struggles and joys are tangible and concrete. I don't know how exactly I'll feel when I get to the finish line (I'm still on chapter 85) but I'm sure I'll miss them like real friends. Summary: AU Caryl fic. When broken people encounter each other, is it possible for them to glue the pieces back together? This is very AU. Carol, Daryl, and Sophia are all broken people who live in very different worlds, but when those worlds unexpectedly collide, can they find healing in themselves through healing each other? Carol Daryl Sophia, other characters may play in later. Rating: E / Explicit Chapters: 179  Word count: 584228  Published: April 20, 2014 - COMPLETE
Lovely fics, lovely recs! Thanks again, anon! And thanks Rose for writing them. Dear fellow caryler, I hope you enjoy our recs for today. Don't forget to leave a nice review to our author while you're at, she deserves all the praise and love! With this, we finish week 5 of caryl fic recs! It's a pleasure to share my love for caryl fanfiction with you all. Tomorrow we start all over again! Caryl on, lovelies, caryl on!

Fix It Wednesday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec
Dear fellow caryler, I think every prolific caryl author out there has written a version of "Daryl finds Sophia/Sophia lives" fix-it, trying to imagine how Carol and Daryl's relationship would evolve without the trauma and grief caused by the girl's death.
Today's story deals with this in a very detailed and well-paced way and leaves the consequences quite open-ended, which I find quite refreshing and worthy of recommendation.
Chirp written by @thereadersmuse is posted both on 9Lives and FF.net.
Summary: Everyone was giving the barn a wide berth, even after the last graves had been dug and the lingering fumes from the fire had long since aired out into the quiet country air. It was more a feeling than anything else, a reminder that a line had been crossed. Perhaps even on both sides. Rating: M / Mature Word count: 12.026 (9 chapters) Published: July 12, 2014 - COMPLETE I love so many things about this story but I'll highlight just one. This fic has very little dialogue because most of it describes Daryl's lonely search for Sophia from his POV. When an author chooses to stay inside a single character's head that much, every interaction and line of dialogue needs to be meaningful enough to break the "silence" and bring emotional substance to the story. It's something very difficult to do but The Readers Muse did it wonderfully. No line of text is wasted, and I'm a particular fan of the contrast between Daryl barely saying anything to Hershel versus he talking to a frightened Sophia while she goes down the stairs, step by step. This story is a great portrait of Daryl's mind, heart and actions and I think you, dear fellow caryler, will love it just as much as I do.
Tomorrow I'm back with your suggestions for AU thursday and a special selection of Thanksgiving fics so stay tuned. For now, please go read Chirp and leave a nice review to our dear author expressing your thoughts about it. I'm sure they will be appreciated. Caryl on!

Plot/No Plot Friday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec
Dear fellow caryler, I'm cheating again! Today's rec has so much plot it's a multi chapter! Why? Because even after fucking nasty, Carol and Daryl can't help but doubt every single aspect of their relationship, can they? 🤷‍♀️ Seeing Red, written by Haitus 80, is posted on FF.net.
Summary: One drunken tryst at the CDC leads to drastic changes for the group. Early season two Caryl short story prompt.
Rating: M / Mature Word count: 22.174 (6 chapters) Published: October 9, 2017 - COMPLETE Here to our horny idiots in love! Our author did a great job alternating between Carol and Daryl's POVs and developing an emotional-driven plot, that is honest, raw and very sweet. Sophia lives on this one and, as always, Daryl bonding with her is completely adorable. The last episode is pure and glorious smut. I'm sure it will keep you satisfied until next friday! Really, this fic has it all and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Tomorrow I'm back with more recs you send me. Oh, don't forget to send our author a nice review. Be grateful for your porn! 😋

Sunday FanFiction recommendation. An oldie but a goodie. Black Moon Blues by Haitus 80 on FanFiction .net. A time travel fix it and Deep Down in the Hollow Ground by Ravenesque 2 also on FanFiction.net finished and the unfinished version on nine lives. It’s a different twist on Carol’s banishment. Wonderful works by wonderful authors. I bet they would love a review.Caryl on
Hi, @southerncountrygirl! It took me a few days but here I am with your recs! Thanks for sending them my way. I hope you don't mind but both fics gave me that feeling 'oh my imagine if THAT really happened' so I decided to put them on our 'fix it wednesday' tag. 😁 Okay, let's go!
Black Moon Blues, written by Haitus 80 is posted on FF.net.
Summary: What if there was a way to prevent the events that brought the group to the prison? What if there was a way to save every single person they have lost along the way? What if second chances at the end of the world actually existed? Will they be strong enough to save the others? This story has given me many sleepless nights but I think it has been worth it. Rating: M / Mature Word count: 251.626 (66 chapters) Aug 25, 2013 - COMPLETE
Time travel! It doesn't get better than time travel for me unless we get a baby at some point, love me a caryl baby because there's no other way to guarantee a cleaner slate than this. One of TWD biggest problems is disposing characters for shock value so time travel fics are great because they can course correct these errors. Our author here makes them pop around effortlessly and it's great to see them all alive again, wonder how they'll survive their canon deaths and celebrate when a different thing happens that ensure their survival. This fic also does a great job in putting S3/S4 Carol on pre-S1 Carol's shoes. This entire work is a celebration of her strength and growth. Do read it, dear fellow caryler, this fic is a intriguing, surprising and very satisfying ride. Oh, and the caryl moments? Adorable!
Deep Down in The Hollow Ground, by Ravenesque2, it's also posted on FF.net. (the version on 9Lives is only updated up to chapter 10).
Summary: No one is quite sure how much time has passed since the fall of the prison. All they know is the reality of always moving on, always surviving, whatever cost it might bring. At least they mostly found each other, but for those they've lost along the way, there is a chasm that can barely be filled. Caryl story.
Rating: M / Mature Word count: 67.142 (22 chapters) Published: Dec 18, 2013 - COMPLETE Carol's banishment on S4 is one of our favorite moments to explore on fandom, right? This fic works on it by taking a very interesting route. It has suspense and drama fueled by a lot of miscommunications, and incredible twists that change everything constructed by canon. This is definitely a caryl story (so much romance, so much tenderness, so much beauty), but our author dedicated time to develop all TF characters, giving them substancial emotional arcs, so it really feels like an alternate version of TWD from the fall of the prison. It's a great read, please give it a try! Thank you again, southerncountrygirl, for your recs. I really appreciated them! As you said, bet these authors would love to get a review notification. So, if you decide to read any of these fics, dear fellow caryler, don't forget to give them a little bit of appreciation. Feedback is LOVE. And we really need more love in this fandom. Caryling on, caryling on!

WIP Saturday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec
Oh, dear fellow caryler, what a happy week! I confess I cried a little bit yesterday because I'm just so fucking happy. I can't express how glad I am that Melissa decided to come back to us.
I trust her to do everything that is in her power to give Carol her happy ending. And we all know that it's Daryl. They are each other's home. They are each other's future and destiny. There's no feasible way for their story to end as anything else. So, yes, I'm hopeful, and after all this time?, hope feels damn good! Melissa/Carol returning also means our fandom is once again alive (we do have 9 lives) so what better day than WIP saturday to celebrate it, right?
Today I selected an incredible WIP written by one of my favorite caryl authors: @silversundown2. Dear Silver, you know I'm a fan of your work. This is my way of sending a little love to you, sharing a little of my hopeful vibes, and getting new people to read your WIP. I hope one day these versions of Carol and Daryl get their happy ending too.
The Forgotten, written by Silver, is posted on 9Lives and AO3.
Summary: All that matters to Daryl is securing his next bottle of insulin, at least until he finds a woman in the middle of the road covered in dirt and bleeding a river. Taking her to the hospital is just being decent but she ain't his problem and helping her unravel the truth of what happened isn't either.
Rating: E / Explicit
Chapters: 20 of ?
Word count: 85499
Published: December 06, 2022 - WIP
Silver is the kind of fanfic writer that can imagine and write the most amazing and unusual AUs (she even sent our beloveds to outer space once on Adrift) while staying true to canon characterization. every. single. time. The Forgotten is no exception to this rule. If you're not following this WIP, I honestly encourage you. Daryl and Carol deal with very real-life issues, some of them we're used to read on caryl fics (domestic violence), others not so much (US health care system) which makes this story refreshing and interesting. And you can trust Silver to deliver hurt/comfort and sweet romance as no one else.
Please, give The Forgotten a try. Leave a review while you're at it to feed our author's muse. Nothing is better than feedback to keep a fandom going.
And, don't forget, tomorrow it's your turn to rec a fic you love! Send me an ask with your recs and I'll be sure to post them. I'm counting on you to keep the positivity and joy flowing! Melissa is back! Carol is back! Caryl is coming! CARYL ON!

hi hi, have a rec possibly for WIP saturday or our turn sunday! i re-read coffee & pies after you rec'd it last week and realized that one part of it (the daryl/merle subplot) kind of reminds me of rough & tumble by iliveatlast on ao3/9 lives. it's an au where daryl meets carol when she's working the night shift at an urgent care after merle breaks his arm, and from there we see them slowly building a relationship (btw the two of them and also sophia!!) and grappling with the legacies/cycles of abuse. i feel like i've read a ton of non-zombie aus where carol is still with ed and daryl saves her from the abusive relationship, but i've never actually seen it handled the opposite way before - even in stories like coffee & pies, merle is very much the b or c plot, and i love seeing carol be the one who has clawed her way out already and is pulling daryl with her - she's not a damsel in distress, canon has made that clear. it's updated decently regularly and currently at almost 100k so even though it's not complete i think it's def worth a read!! i also have to say, i'm a sucker for sophia - more time for our girl, gone too soon!! - and the relationship btw her and daryl in this fic is so beautifully drawn and delicate. and her and carol - breaks my heart, so loving and caring and makes the loss of her in the show hurt 10x as much. the author has a couple other aus that are ZA aus where sophia lives and i love that version of her sophia too - slingshot wielding badass in training! so just some recs for you if you want/need them. thanks for doing these lists, i'm really enjoying being reintroduced to fics i haven't read in a while and digging into some fics that are brand new to me!!!
Hi, giveusthesun! Thank you so much for taking time to rec a caryl fic to us all. First, let me say that I agree with your reflection about how fic writers can get a same plot/prompt and, working with the same characters, create very different, but equally excellent, stories. I'm currently reading Rough and Tumble too and I'm very happy to see it recommended by you. Writen by @iliveatlast, you can find it on both 9Lives and AO3. Summary: "How are people gonna sign your cast?" the girl asks. "If it's all black?" "Um. Dunno. S’okay,” Daryl says awkwardly when it becomes clear she’s waiting for some kind of response. “Ain’t like - don’t really think nobody’ll wanna sign it anyway. So." Instead of getting the kid to let up, this statement seems to somehow capture her interest. She uncurls in the chair a little, looking at him with a wide-open face. “Why not?" But he’s saved from having to answer that by Carol the desk lady, who breaks into a little half-run when she sees Daryl waiting. “Sorry, sorry - just had to step away for a moment, sorry about that, Daryl.” “S’fine,” Daryl mumbles. She doesn’t have to apologize to him for taking a piss or whatever, good Lord.
Rating: T / Teen and Up Audiences Word count: 92107 (18 chapters of ?) Published: December 02, 2022 - WIP Rough and Tumble is a story reflects on how complex abuse is by shining light on Daryl and Merle's very difficult and violent relationship with great detail. If Daryl's your favorite TWD character, you'll love how iliveatlast writes him - it's just really well done. Despite dealing with heavy themes, this is fic is also very endearing and sweet (Daryl and Sophia's bonding make me smile every single chapter). Dear fellow caryler, go and give this fic a chance if you have the time. As always, leave the author some kind of feedback to let them know that you appreciate their work and creativity. Love and kindness makes all the difference in having a positive fandom experience! Caryling on to our next rec!
