The hardest part of everything is knowing Kassandra has someone who cares about her now, and as such, she has someone who worries greatly about her. While in many cases she can afford to be reckless, it doesn't mean Emily is always going to see it that way. Especially once they found out that Kassandra could actually be hurt or even killed with a strong enough concentration of the Void. And she hates being fretted over as is, but to have someone genuinely worried that she would die? She worries more for Emily than herself. It feels so foreign to her.

Maybe Kassandra deserved better than the fate she was given, but she knows how stained her hands are. She doesn't always believe it herself.

In the time that Emily is away, Kassandra allows herself to rest, staying in the position she was left in. Not the nicest place to be, but rather she bleed out here than on the deck where any passerby could see her and her strange markings. Her eyes occasionally open, glancing at the clone Emily left to stand watch. "I know you can't hear me because you're just some... projection or something, I actually don't know how you work. But, if I ever do die from one of these wounds, I would want you to know you were worth holding on for." It's easier to say when she knows she's actually alone. Kassandra doesn't deal well with voicing some of the harder emotions sometimes. It wasn't something she did except with Roxana and... she ended that for her sake. Fear that she would lose control and kill her, back when her condition was new and more dangerous.

It feels like forever, which is saying something given her immortality. But after a while she lets her eyes fall completely shut, even talking to the clone doesn't do much to keep her entertained and Ikaros was keeping watch of the larger area and unable to keep watch over her directly. But a sudden sound, light as it is, breaks her from her near meditation, eyes opening to see Emily has returned to her. The real enemy, not the non-responsive clone. "I'm still here, love. You're not losing me that easily."

she thought about nat often but didn't do anything about it,, the thought of dating her was nothing more than a dream to jackie.

jackie made the first move (completely accidentally) by asking nat after soccer one day if she wanted to go look at CD's and records and casettes with her, that she wanted to look at some more of the music nat put on the mixtapes for her (is this a readable sentence??? idk its 3am)

they spent an hour in the store just talking and laughing as if they were already best friends for years

so i've been falling down the danmei productions (chinese censored productions of BL novels) rabbit hole and i've figured out the basic BL starter pack:

1. BANTER. the two protagonists need to make a ton of thinly veiled jokes at each other about being in love. because censors! so in order to get any of it aired it's all gotta be nudge nudge wink wink. let me insert an episode where everyone suddenly acts out of character due to magic! or let me make the shameless one dress as a woman for an episode! they will find any and every way to let the two leads f l i r t and make us all wonder: why don't these two just get married already?

2. YEARNING. because if one half of our main couple has not waited at least 10 years for the other to either show up in their life or resurrect from the dead, are they really in love?

3. OPPOSITES ATTRACT. we need the flirty one! endlessly grinning and touching and teasing the silent one! and the cold quiet one is only soft for the sunshine one! how else can we know that their love is true!

4. SUFFERING. and i mean SUFFERING. dead parents. entire families annihilated. torture. tragic backstories abound. these men have never known happiness until they've met their other half. and then all they want to do is watch the world burn together. (and can we really blame them for that?)

5. ACTS OF ("brotherly") LOVE. they were brothers, historians would say, but they're almost always nearly dying for each other, and longing after each other, and siding with each other against the entire world.

5.1 OH BUT THEY WERE IN LOVE IN LOVE. there's gotta be at least one scene somewhere when our two main protagonists speculate about their possible future together. especially if it's just before some incredibly terrifyingly intense climax of the story (where one of our leads may *gasps* die) they talk about running a noodle shop together, or roaming the world together, or travelling from town to town fighting crime together.

5.2 AND THEY WERE SOULMATES. the word soulmates comes up somewhere. it technically translates to confidant (or person who knows me) but. if the translators decide to subtitle it as soulmate who am i to tell them otherwise.

6. FOUND FAMILY. they also have to adopt a kid who's gonna follow them through their adventures. sometimes it's two kids, sometimes it's a whole baseball team of children (of all ages and genders, they are incredibly inclusive on this point in this way). these kids are going to represent every single viewer, watching the main leads flirt while wondering, why don't i have two dads? why must one always go away and leave me behind? why is it always the rich dad that's gotta go? please come back and feed me and my poor papa we are starving rich dad.

i could keep going but these are the main requirements in our basic chinese BL novel adaptation starter packs. oh also most of the budget goes into hiring the two most attractive main leads possible and you get to watch as the cgi gets worse episode after episode as the show loses funding through its run. but it doesn't matter because these two men are clearly in love and i'm still 100% here for it.

i saw this ask the instant it came in and i could not believe my EYES. trust when i tell you ive been typing FURIOUSLY in the meantime okay. okay headcanons. -dave has always been a little genderweird and vriska putting makeup on him when she was bored one night unlocked his third eye and now he cant stop putting red shit all over his eyelids -vriska has also always been genderweird and you can see where im going with this. -she steals his clothes ALL the time -he pretends to hate it when she gets her disgusting $5 perfume stink all over said clothes but you know he loves that shit (and she knows it too) -flaming bisexuals -once theyve been together for a while they are THE most "i am going to have the longest silent conversation with someone across the room you have ever seen in your life" -they both think they can read each other like a book but in truth its only about 60-70% accurate -the inaccuracies are always funny as fuck though and 9 times out of 10 its some entirely off the wall MADNESS due to their upbringings they think is entirely normal. the conversations that directly follow these revelations are legendary amongst the extended crew and every single one thats happened in a public memo has been screenshotted by basically everyone they know -speaking of which. i dont think they dm for basically anything ever. they either have conversations right in the GC (sometimes in the middle of other conversations, which karkat fucking HATES, especially when they flirt with each other) or they speak in person/over the phone. no in between -they flirt with each other all the time and its disgusting but its incomprehensible to literally everyone else. vriska tells dave she found some gnarly roadkill and sends coordinates and dave is like "babe stop not in front of everybody" -she used to send pictures too but that got shut down real quick and now thats really all she dms him for -i dont think vriska likes it for the same reasons dave does but he did absolutely get her into the weird and wacky world of vulture culture. dave likes the wet specimens the most but vriskas a fan of bones and taxidermy -speaking of which. this is more vriska/troll-centric but i love the idea of vriska being able to eat bones. dave gets the same schoolboy "oh my god this is so cool" kick out of it every single time -im well aware that music is a time thing but i genuinely cannot comprehend a world wherein vriska is not a music girlie. this definitely did a lot of the heavy lifting in The Early Days because when youre emotionally constipated sometimes you gotta let a song do the talking FOR you -vriska 100% introduced dave to crunkcore and he got way more into it than she ever did. he listens to 3oh3 religiously -dave samples vriska on his tracks all the time because she CANNOT shut the fuck up. he also likes taking pictures of her but even after years together he still kinda keeps those to himself and gets flustered when she finds one -man i just really love the idea of them being fucking obsessed with each other. they rag on each other ALL the time because thats just how they feel the most comfortable being affectionate but at the end of the day they snuggle up all soft and quiet and just enjoy being with somebody who understands how hard it can be to even allow that to happen in the first place -they ARE super casually affectionate with each other though, even in group settings. i dont think theyd like grand pda like kissing or saying 'i love you' in public but personal space just doesnt really exist for them. they hang off each other and sling legs over laps all willy nilly -they also stim on each other. dave likes to play with her hair while hes talking and vriska likes to play with his hands/fingers when shes bored this post is so LONG i could keep going for days. please always ask me about davris, especially if youve got more specific questions!!!

- something something something same birthday complete opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how they celebrate it

- wants his bday to be a nice quiet affair with the people he loves most, his little found family and maybe karina if hes feeling generous that year

- if u plan a party in any capacity hes gotta be part of the action! wants to hang streamers, balloons, any little things you decide on to spruce up your place for the event (please don’t call it an event he can’t handle the pressure)

- also u can’t have a cookout bday bc he will insist on working the grill the whole time. shark coded, will drown if he isn’t doing something 

- the party itself is extremely laidback, feels more like a big hangout. ordering 3 of his favorite type of pizza, bringing out beanbags and comfy chairs from other parts of the house so everyone can sit in the living room together. gabi and falco take the tv hostage to play video games and colt and bertholdt somehow get roped into it. it’s raucous, but comfortable.

- u and gabi collab on a homemade cake, but reiner is the baker in the family and gabi just likes the excuse to make a mess. end up making some easy cookies and buying a walmart sheet cake, and its a good thing, too, because just the sight of his name is enough to make him tear up. “you didn’t have to do all this” what, make a phone call to get ur name on a cake? the bar is on the floor unfortunately

- no presents because he can’t handle the pressure, but there’s a couple cards and his lip trembles over each one. zeke gets him a card that’s obviously for kids with stickers inside but he tears up at that one too because “it even comes with a little gift… so thoughtful…”

- rest of the party is spent doing more of the same, a couple beers are thrown back, maybe tosses a football around or something. very classic suburban white picket fence dream party. it brings reiner a quiet joy, one that he keeps close to his chest, a memory that he’ll look back on over and over.

- the guests start to filter out one by one until its just u and him, picking up paper plates, putting away leftovers. its all very domestic, it might actually be reiner’s favorite part. to just be with u in companionable silence, scooting around and putting the house in order. domesticity is something sacred that he never thought he’d have, and its a joy to share it with u.

- he INSISTS on sitting on the couch with u after, gives u those big eyes that he only gets when he wants u to pet his hair, falls asleep to one of his favorite comfort films with your hands on his head, totally content

- wakes up in the wee hours and carries u to bed like the big bear of a man that he is, not expecting anything of you, just wanting u to be comfortable. tucks u in and gives u a kiss like it’s your birthday or something

- and it’s not a gift bc reiner specifically requested no gifts, but if he wakes up to u wearing something special the next morning, something that leaves nothing to the imagination, i mean… maybe the party doesn’t have to be over quite yet

yeah my favorite part of mumbomaid is that no one knows what a gender is and they misunderstand in all different ways you put it 100% perfectly. Do you respond to comments? I try to. I don't always, but sometimes I'll sit down and just answer a lot of them in one go. Even when I don't respond, know that I read and appreciate each and every one, yes, including the ones that are just a string of hearts — I love getting the ao3 comment emails.

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? I only posted one fic which is unfinished as of this moment. The endings for all my wips are either happy or bittersweet. I don't tend to write tragedies, but I do love me a bittersweet ending.

There is a pretty angsty wip I abandoned where Harry ends up in Azkaban at the end of GoF that is pretty angsty all the way through, It's more of a psychological horror story, so the ending there is not super happy, but it doesn't end in tragedy either. So, that.

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? As I said, the one posted fic isn't done and I tend to write happy endings, but if we're talking unfinished abandoned wips, then probably the Gen one of Harry traveling back to the 1970s and most of the war is avoided.

Do you write crossovers? Not really. I tried to write a few, but I always find that they shift the focus too much from the story I want to tell. I found two old wips of attempted crossovers in my docs and neither of them passed the 1k words.

Have you ever received hate on a fic? Not on the fic, no.

Do you write smut? I cannot write smut for the life of me. I tried, but I can't do it. I can write the prelude to smut, the after-smut stuff, but the smut itself — my brain just won't do it.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Don't belive so.

Have you ever had a fic translated? No.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I have a beta (the same one for everything, she does not have a tumblr, but she has an ao3) who reads over what I write and helps with editing and brainstorming sometimes, but, I'm the only one writing my stories.

What's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? Most of them, unfortunately. I used to be pretty bad at finishing things, but if I had to pick one unpublished, never-to-be-finished fic it's one of the first fics I ever tried to write. It's a Gravity Falls fic, taking place a few years after the show, with a whole mystery I made up and everything. I tried rewriting it a bunch of times but I never got past the 20k words mark, so it'll probably never happen. Even if I like a lot of the bits I wrote there.

What are your writing strengths? Dialogue and pacing.

I know I'm good with getting how characters speak, their little mannerisms and (in the case of HP) witty remarks like the books have. And I love writing dialogue. As for pacing, I used to not be great at it, but I've gotten many compliments about it and I think I'm pretty good now at sensing when a scene should end, or how many scenes should be between events and such.

What are your writing weaknesses? Describing characters. Like, I can do it, but I'm never sure what i need to describe and what I don't. Often I just forget to write a description altogether, and then when I edit, I go: "oh, damn, I didn't describe what this guy looks like anywhere," so yeah. Like, I can do it, I just consciously balance how I describe characters in ways I don't do when I describe literally anything else.

Also, past-perfect my behated (my beta is constantly correcting me when I use past-simple/past-progressive instead of past-perfect).

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Like, when you gotta you gotta, I guess, it all depends on execution. I never really had to do it myself but I know I don't mind it when reading if a translation is given at the end notes of the chapter the dialogue is in.

Personally, unless I really need the actual words in the other language there for some reason I'd probably do something like: "'[some sentence in English]' he said in French" or "he muttered something in Spanish under his breath" if the POV character doesn't understand the language. But, that's just my preference for writing for my sake and for clarity 🤷‍♀️

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? Ehhh... I usually write for whichever fandoms I feel like writing (I have like two Gravity Falls wips form, like, 2016, haunting me) and I've been on a pretty consistent HP roll in the past years. I think I have one Batman comics wip somewhere, but it's pretty old. I would like to post more fics in general in the future honestly, but I want to finish A Matter of Chance first, so they'll have to wait.

I gotta HURRY UP with this one before reading your new fic (which I'm so excited about!!) so here goes my thoughts on chapter 13 because LORD I loved it!!

First off, Jaime was such an incredible character to read!! Effortlessly fitting in until a certain donut-stealing speedster tags along who ruins it all in the course of minutes😂😂, I really wonder how Jaime's day-to-day life looks like with having to hide Khaji Da from his groupmates, I hope it's not too much trouble but knowing Jaime I doubt it

But also the dynamic you wrote between them was really interesting! Jaime is forever a Mom Friend who will do anything and everything to make sure his friends are okay, even if it means frustrating whisper-fights during class or accidentally bringing his best friend to tears. Both times because of bringing up Owen (brilliant, by the way), I'm really curious as to how and why and when Bart told Jaime about his brother if it is such a sensitive subject and what Jaime's reaction was since he obviously thinks it's very important.

(I'd also very much like to know what the photo of Jaime and Tye is)

ALSO I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE WITH THE CIRCUS TICKETS, THAT WAS NOT THE REMINDER I NEEDED BUT HERE WE ARE (poor Bart lost in space and time)

about owen, it wasn’t a one and done kind of thing, it’s like some tidbits jaimes accumulated just by knowing bart for the past (what, 4 years?) but also knowing about his actual background from practically the get go. i always thought that it gives decent incentive for bart to be straightforward about his past and by talking the two can work through some of their respective things. so through a combination of offhand comments and just him out right asking he managed to gather some stuff. bart would talk about owen overcompensatingly casually but then with each conversation jaime starts to realise how he talks about owen compared to jenni is pretty different and some other context clues etc…

jaime and tyes picture is 100% from them fcking around at some point during the summer, totally wasted lol i’ll leave it up to yalls imagination on how stupid they could get 😭

I hate how everyone is just out there always questioning why he doesn't wanna settle down and we see other drivers making it work this might get long but hear me out people and you may disagree with me and it's okay that's just my personal take on it.

Lewis has said it multiple times he won't do it till he at least retires from F1. For various reasons he outed once that it's not fair for his partner or child to be on the run with him for 9 months of the year because both should have a life outside of his like imagine his partner having a career and her own life what she should give all that up for him? Yeah Lewis himself won't agree with it and having a child with it is definitely a no for him because it's a millionth time harder also he once said (a very important reason tbh) that F1 is a dangerous sport and life cannot be taken for guarantee you never know what happens and he can't imagine leaving a family behind him just because he wanted to pursue this sport in his life!! I actually loved him more for thinking this way. On a personal level, this man has stated more than once that he's not the best communicator, he doesn't know how to be vulnerable or weak with someone else, and he finds it hard to accept love and affection from other people I'm sorry but if he so far can't do that or still isn't willing to work on it then yes staying single is the best choice for him because when you're with someone you gotta be all in it's not like friendships or family relationships no that's your life partner you two supposed to be each other's home and I'm not saying that he'll never be able to do so but it's just not on his time preference now, and 100% he won't stay celibate his whole life ESPECIALLY a man like him😭😂 so him having all of these girls is kinda understandable and let's be honest half of them throw themselves at him and tons of them just used his name for clout without being involved with him for real, because i actually find it hard to believe that every girl that's been outed on gossip pages actually was with him especially when the "proof" they show could be related to anything. And for people who talk about the woman being slightly younger than him and im not saying this to defend him on it but cmon a 25 and above girl is not "young" she's supposed to be a mature grown up woman by that time and knows exactly what she's doing and lately the women im seeing being involved with him are actually 28 and above you have to understand it's not easy for him to find a girl his age or near his age that could accept such type of relationship she's either married or actually looking for something serious she won't agree on being his fuck buddy for like 5 years till he's ready to settle down and he might not even settle down with her but that doesn't mean him getting involved with some 20-21 girl isn't icky it's actually creepy because to me she's still basically a teenager and if some of these early 20's wanna leech off his name it's not on him tbh because why the hell are girls that young nowadays are obsessed with being arm candy for men??🫠 you should be studying and building your own life and making your own dreams but sighh literally the easier the better for them...

5 (+2) of my favorite games I played in 2024

In the past I've had a bit of a tradition of writing about my favorite games I played in the year. But by 2022, I kind of stopped playing games for a bit. 2023 was much the same and so I didn't end up writing up anything. But! This year I actually managed to play video games! Yay?!

Like usual, this list includes any games I played this year, regardless of their original release year. I also have TWO bonus mentions which are games I didn't really like but still wanted to write about!

(Dis)honorable Mention: Bowser's Fury

When Bowser's Fury released in 2021, I heard a lot of comments on how it was ushering in a new era of 3D Mario. "It's basically a new 3D Mario game!" "This is what the future of Mario looks like" "If you love 3D Mario, you have to play this". Well a few years after it released I finally rolled credits on Bowser's Fury and I gotta say... I'm not a big fan!

I love 3D Mario games but Bowser's Fury just kind of annoys me. For years I've been critical of Super Mario 3D World's limited controls and level design, because I always found the more free and expressive movement in other 3D Mario games to be way more fun. But I do have to give credit where it's due: at least Mario 3D World's level design and controls were developed in harmony with each other. Bowser's Fury is an intriguing sales pitch: the gameplay of 3D World but with way more open world level design. But it kept feeling like the controls were designed for a completely different game... because they were! I don't usually have to "fight the controls" while playing a Mario game, but this one is the exception.

I feel like the game also has a lot of little annoyances that add up. The game doesn't really encourage doing 100% completions of each little area all in a row, but instead encourages you to venture from area to area and slowly loop back on older ones to eventually 100% them all. But why? Why am I discouraged from playing like this? Why do I have to sit around and just wait for Bowser to destroy a block in every single area? Why do I have to manually leave a level to reset it, can't it just boot me back to the beginning like Mario 64? Since most level layouts are reused, it means I keep having to do the same linear platforming challenges over and over again for different shines.

It's an interesting experience but in my opinion it's always going to be an extra thing tied to 3D World instead of its own release.

Bonus Dishonorable Mention: Bionicle The Game

This year I played a couple of games that I was never able to beat as a child with horrible hand-eye coordination. One of these games was Bionicle for the Gamecube. This game is not very good, as one would expect. It's pretty short and I feel like it misses one of the main appeals of Bionicle: the world! Running through levels to defeat bad guys as a hero character is cool, but where are the villages?

In video games there is a weird pattern that a small fraction of players will follow that most developers will never even consider or account for at all. If your game has the capabilities, children will use your game as dolls. They will roleplay a completely different story with the on-screen characters. They will play house. They will find a way to do this.

I think Bionicle kind of lacks this capability though. The levels are a bit too linear and boring for this to really work. This is a very niche complaint but I think it's one reason why I didn't like this game as a child. (I mainly don't like it as an adult because. Well it's a low budget licensed children's game for Gamecube. There was no way this game would be good)

Now that some dishonorable mentions are out of the way… let's talk about the games I really did enjoy!

5. Splatoon 3 + Side Order

I finally beat the story mode of Splatoon 3 this year! The story mode on this game was mainly a "I'm waiting at the gate at the airport" type distraction so it took me forever to finish it. It was fun! I'm glad that they decided to replicate Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion instead of its original campaign but... it kind of felt a bit too much like a copy of it at times. Regardless it was fun, and the final moments were the kind of special wackiness that felt absent from Splatoon 2's main story mode.

I happened to finish this story mode right as Side Order came out so I played that too. And I gotta say... I kind of get why the hip thing in gaming right now is The Roguelite. I get it. It makes every moment of gameplay way more engaging because this could be the run that wins! I think this Roguelite treatment fits Splatoon's gameplay pretty well too. I am hoping that if there's a Splatoon 4 that it doesn't copy this roguelite formula for its story mode. But still! Very fun and if I was a kid with all the time in the world I'd totally try to 100% complete Side Order. As an adult? I'm happy just beating it once.

4. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

They made Vivian transgender. They put a transgender in my favorite childhood video game. :')

But seriously though revisiting this game on Switch was fun. I think there's this idea that remakes of games are low effort cash grabs. And it's definitely true that remaking a game is often easier than making a completely new game from scratch, I do think that people tend to underestimate the work that goes into a remake. All of the things they added or changed aesthetically in this remake are great. I especially love all of the concept art you can unlock which really gives you a look into both original development and the work that went into the remake.

3. Until Then

I initially heard of this game from a Godot engine showcase video. I have to say, while it doesn't matter to the player at all, I like what this game is built out of. It was a pleasant surprise to see that they also used Inkle's Ink to make this game.

Anyway, if you're looking to play a Makoto Shinkai-esque story set in the Philippines, play Until Then! I loved how explorable the game's social media feed is in particular. I don't want to spoil too much of the game so I won't go into much more detail, but I love all the characters in the game. I almost got faked out when the credits rolled for the first time.

2. Famicom Detective Club - Emio: The Smiling Man

It's been a while since a game announcement has actually made me excited. Maybe I've been burnt too many times. Maybe it's just that the Nintendo Switch has most of what I could ask for at this point.

When the mysterious "Emio" trailer was revealed to be for a new Famicom Detective Club game, I was in a good mood for the entire week. A brand new game in the series was at the top of my "most wanted Nintendo Direct announcements" for the last few years. And we finally got it!

And well, this game really is a brand new Famicom Detective Club game. I think it fits really well with the other two games in the series, despite the fact that they were made decades apart. I was hoping that the game might more fundamentally reimagine what one of these games with modern system specs, but it plays pretty much identically to the previous ones. So much so that I feel like a "demake" of the game to original Famicom hardware could be possible.

That's actually the only disappointment I have for the game. One of the earlier games in the series has a small maze-navigation minigame near the end and I was really hoping that Emio would deliver a similar surprise minigame that was a bit more advanced in gameplay. It doesn't, but that's not a deal breaker.

To be fair, Emio does deliver something that would have been impossible in the Famicom days and I think it's going to stick with me for a while. Like, one of the wildest post-games I've ever experienced in a game ever, and probably will ever experience. Buy Emio please they need to make more of these.

1. Quest 64 / Holy Magic Century

This one's really getting the number 1 spot on my list, huh?

I started off my games backlog this year by playing through Quest 64, a game that my family has owned for as long as I remember. Despite this, I've never seen very far into the game. I'd get through the first town and give up playing pretty quickly, and my family would pretty much do the same. But there was something about this game that haunted me over the years.

For some reason, I am fascinated by generic, yet more obscure and old JRPGs. I do not know why this is the case. I don't even really like JRPGs. But Quest 64 fits that mold and it called out to me. There is something thrilling about playing a game like this because it feels like you're truly exploring something that not many people have seen. There's a bit of wonder that comes from not knowing where this game is going. I dunno.

Holy Magic Century (the name that Quest 64 fans usually use because it sounds more fitting) is a very ambitious game. In many ways it's incredibly ahead of its time. This is a fully 3D JRPG where battles take place in the overworld (this isn't saying much, but Pokemon didn't achieve that until 2022!). And when I say it's 3D I mean it's fully polygonal 3D. No pre-rendered environments like Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy 7. Most NPCs have some kind of unique appearance, and there are many completely bespoke NPC models. The camera control is... fine for the time. There are not too many blatant glitches. The battle system is novel and has a fun learning curve. At times it feels like I'm playing a JRPG from the PS2/Gamecube era instead of the Nintendo 64. The moment-to-moment gameplay is surprisingly solid.

It seems like I'm praising the game to no end but let me be clear. While I think Holy Magic Century has impressive technical ambitions that rival or maybe even surpass what Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy 7 do, it's important to note one big difference: Ocarina and FF7 were actually finished. They have to resort to pre-rendered background environments, but those environments are at least fun to explore around! They actually tell a story! They add up to make a memorable game! I cannot say the same thing for Holy Magic Century's impressive but unfinished polygonal world.

Holy Magic Century's world feels like a barren wasteland at times. The pretentious part of my brain almost tried to interpret this as an intentional artistic choice ("is this a game that's about emptiness?") but as you play the game and research its development it's clear the world is shaped by the limitations of time and budget and overambition. As you get through the game these limitations become more and more visible. You see that the once-novel battle system starts to get old and tired once you've realized you've seen all there is to see with it and you're only halfway through the game. You can tell which characters would have joined your party if they managed to finish that part of the game. You can see other traces of mechanics that should be in the game but were never implemented.

I know a small group of people will defend this game to death and hate it when people say "Quest 64 doesn't have a story" but like... it's kind of true? There are hints of a story. Concepts of a plan. But as someone who was truly, actively trying to engage with the story... there was basically nothing here. The tiny hint of story we get at the end was a welcome surprise after basically nothing the whole time but that doesn't make up for the rest of the game.

And yet... I still kind of liked it? When I beat the game I kept thinking of all the things I'd do in my next playthrough. Which... is kind of wild? This game is disappointing but it's disappointing in a very fascinating way. I feel like I've never seen such visible scope reduction in a finished video game in my life before. You can practically see which corners were cut. Which mechanics are essentially just bandages covering up ambitions never fully realized. It's really fascinating to play through and it's going to be a game that will continue to haunt me even after I thought I was finally done with it.

...Oh god I really became one of those people who's actually pretentious about this game. Fuck.

There’s different sections for world building, storytimes, quizzes, fanfics (of other ppls DRs), tips & methods, nsfw storytimes (adults only plz), philosophy related to shifting, and discussions about shifting (idk why I didn’t just merge discussions with philosophy..). Don’t be surprised if some or most of the shifters here aren’t human! I scripted that all non malevont beings that shift can come here; this does also mean that the books are automatically translated into the language you understand best. Oh and the authors aren’t always going to be human.

This DR is my first ever DR; my original intent with shifting is to help get over my fear of men + people in general, especially taller people

Waiting Room

My waiting room is essentially an isekai manhwa mansion 😭😭 I scripted that there’s a serving cart with one of those 3 tiered afternoon snack things + milk tea, the milk tea has special properties that calm me down immediately when I drink it. My goal is to use the smell of the tea to know that I’ve shifted, and to drink the tea so I don’t fuck myself over and shift back to my OR 😭😭

no but i can't get over how actually well done the last few days were. announce a surprise and not 48 hours later we find out that 1) tour movie, the same thing taylor swift did a few months ago and now everyone wants plus we know it's a show they worked super hard on, 2) it's free, excellent for anyone who couldn't afford to go etc (we've all been there) and out literally right now on a (mostly) free platform (the very same one that they got started on but anyway) and perhaps most notably, 3) it's free with the hopes that you might instead of paying for it donate to gaza, and the links are right there.

like they could've charged us $20 each for the show and sent all their profits there themselves (with the hope that we believe they're being honest that it's 100%, for them of course we would but i know others have lied about similar). but instead they gave us autonomy over our donation just like. encouraged it. like cmon who wouldn't listen when ashton tells us to donate to something if we can? (also did anyone else say so, i'm not the best at keeping up with social media so lmk if there's more of them to give credit to here). anyway we gotta talk about it more. how perfectly this was done: we get a gift!! be it for christmas if you celebrate or just in general, that we expected we'd have to pay for. now we get asked, hey, if you have any money could you send it to these people who Really Need It So Badly if you can? I know not all of you do so we won't stop you from watching the movie if you don't but

also this is a really clever way to show their support for gaza. like they are (deliberately i think) trying not to be leaders in an area that they aren't experts in, and there has been a lot of misinformation around, a lot of misunderstanding, like yes they did stand up for ukraine last year but the media was a lot more black and white for that one (or should i say blue and yellow) but when it comes down to it they're not stupid and they're not fooled by whatever the country they currently live in is pushing and they've actually taken their time to not say shit to save face prematurely but actually do something that's, even if not big or dramatic, gonna be impactful? they've not put themselves out there campaigning for a ceasefire, yes, but they've posted links that are. they've not guilted us into donating but please tell me you're not at least feeling some obligation to. it's simple, it's actionable, it's right there in the caption and takes like 20 seconds. and if any of us in the fandom (global family or whatever they're building) are leading in the ceasefire decolonisation space we have our little encouragement to see that yes, these musicians we love aren't gonna sit there and do nothing. it's not monumental, but it's something.

and tbh i wouldn't be surprised if this was all planned like a week ago in a zoom call between australia and the usa when ryan texted to say that the film was done. like it was in their random spontanous lightheated style. i also think we can learn something from the fact that it's okay to not jump on everything the minute it comes out but actually every lasting impact is a long-haul effort that you've gotta sustain yourself for by doing what you love as well. and also sometimes the right opportunity to do something about what we care about comes and you just take it, don't think too hard, don't wait either if you don't need to, if there is a cause that needs your effort whenever you get an opportunity to give it will always be the right time. hopefully they've set a precedent for something--i have no idea if any artist has done similar but i'm really proud of them.

and that's why i don't get the fact that we've been talking about how horrific this genocide is and then going right to which songs they cut or kept. like i would like a live version of you don't go to parties! but i would like an entire fandom to donate to aid for gaza even more and be thinking about why we need a ceasefire and maybe doing something about it even more. i've been unwell yes and under financial and other stress yes but i'm not starving or freezing to death and so i'll take that L and i won't go home. i won't stop talking about what's important. i'm starting to find my voice again and this has been a big inspiration for it between all the discouragement.

have we not figured it out? they're not just dumbasses sometimes they do something towards a cause we really care about so let's give them credit for that. heck they even filmed bad omens in ukraine in 2022 have we forgotten about that? they don't put themselves out there as influential figures in any way but that's sometimes the best way to humanise the people we care about (and i think honestly they just do this naturally because when you're not chasing clout and you're trained to recognise talent and potential talent in even the worst situations, you'll automatically think like that). it's small in the face of everything going on, yes. so am i! and if i learned anything over the last 24 hours it's that small things can be meaningful. this has been to me and i don't doubt to the recipients of the donations of (i hope) an entire fandom.
