A/N: this fic does not follow the storyline of AHS Cult, it follows an entirely different plot.

It would be a very, very cold day in hell before Kai said no to Karina leaving the house, especially when Meadow was her reason for wanting to leave. All he asked was she takes a trusted (by his standards at least) Cult member every time she left the house, if she wasn't with him.

Kai especially wasn't a fool, he'd known Karina hasn't been feeling well, yet she'd decided she wanted to go out until he'd gotten home. He could either wait to ask her, or be impatient and call her and demand an answer.

Which is why Karina wasn't surprised when her phone began ringing while she drove. "Winter, answer that for me." Karina asked and the younger girl quickly did as she was instructed, becoming nervous as soon as she heard her brother's voice.

"He wants to talk to you." Winter says, looking at Karina.

Her green eyes locked on Winter before returning to the road. "Put him on speaker." She told Winter and she did as Karina told her to do.

"Hello?" Karina answered, finally locking completely on the road.

"Where are you?" Kai demanded, his usual 'public' tone of voice in play.

"Heading to a mall outside of town, why?" Karina asked, patience dripping from her voice like honey.

A very tempting honey that Kai had a hard time fighting.

"Why'd you ask to leave the house?" He asked, Karina could hear talking in the background.

"Meadow pissed me off and it was either leave or make an example of her." Karina said simply, smirking at the way Winter had to hide her snicker.

"Alright. We'll talk about it later when I get home. You'll be home by seven, right?" He asked gruffly.

"That was the plan, m'lord." She jokes, knowing Kai enough to know he rolled his eyes.

"Very funny, Everleigh." He said, and her face scrunched up in a cringe.

"You know I dislike my middle name." Karina pouted as she stopped at a stop light.

Kai chuckled, and Karina could only imagine the grin his face must've been sporting. "I know." He cooed.

She took him off of speaker and pressed the phone to her ear, her voice softening as she spoke.

"I love you, darling." She said, her tone gentle and a small smile threatening to pull at her lips.

On the other end of the line, Kai could've swore he could almost feel his pupils dilating whilst listening to her speak. He almost disliked admitting even to himself that he adored her as much as he did, how could he be a strong leader if he was obsessed with a simple ginger haired woman?

Well, he had time to figure that out. For now he couldn't stop himself from giving in to her. He really couldn't complain, she didn't ask for much.

"I love you, too." He whispered, a small playful smirk adding so mirth to his voice.

It was barely there, but it made Karina happy.

"I'm sure you have to go, but would it be okay if I brought you some chapstick? I think Meadow used your last one this morning." Karina asked.

Kai cringed, rolling his eyes and fighting the urge to gag.

"If you wish. Make sure you and Winter eat, okay?" He said, making her nerves spike.

Had he noticed she hadn't been eating?

"Yeah, I'll bring the chapstick to you after lunch. Or during your lunch, whenever. I know you're at a campaign right now." Karina said, pressing on the gas as the light turned green.

"Whenever works for you." He says, tone still guttural but held a certain softness for Karina.

"Okay, stay safe." Karina chirped, and he chuckled before bidding her goodbye and ending the call.

The girls giggled as they left Bath and Body, Karina pulled a wagon with their things in it and they discussed what store they wanted to go to first.

That is, until they both noticed a trio of men with hungry, glazed over eyes. Pupils completely dilated in lust, they barely tried to hide the fact that Winter and Karina were their next victims of choice.

Winter was quick to use Karina's phone to secretly snap pictures of them and Karina slipped a ring onto her left ring finger, Kai had bought it to try to deter anyone from flirting with her.

Winter and Karina kept walking, almost as if they hadn't even noticed the men, until they reached the darker part of the mall where a very run down Spencer's was, an emo teen working the register.

Karina quickly grabs Winter protectively as the three burly men surrounded them, sweat glistening on their skin and discolored t-shirts.

"What's a couple of pretty girls doin here alone, eh?" The biggest one asked, disgusting brown eyes not leaving Winter. Wrong move.

"Shopping and waiting for my husband and his friend." Karina said, hoping the men would be smart.

She was an idiot for thinking a man like him would actually have common sense.

Instead, he stepped closer, yanking Winter out of Karina's grasp. Before he could get far, both of his friends had been knocked out with bloody noses and the barrel of a gun pressed to his head.

"Let her go, or I'll kill you."

Karina and Winter made quick work of leaving that mall, loading everything into Karina's SUV and taking off down a back road to get back to town quickly.

"He's gonna notice." Winter said, doe eyes still dilated in fear.

"At this point Winter, I don't care. I hope he notices and I hope he sends Ally and Ivy and Harrison after them. Or even does it himself." Karina growled, her fists gripping the steering wheel until the skin around her knuckles turned white.

"No one touches you." She continued, and Winter knew the best thing at the present moment would be to let Karina calm down before they reached town, and hope Kai wouldn't notice Karina's limp.

"Talk about something. If I show up in public like this I'll cause a scene." Karina said, her grip on the steering wheel slacking slightly.

"What flavor chapstick are you making Kai try this time?" Winter asked, making Karina crack a small smile for a moment.

"I'm not sure yet. It can't be something too horrendous or he'll take mine instead." Karina muttered, remembering the last time she'd gotten him a flavor he abhorred.

"Where we going for lunch?" Winter asked, her stomach growled and Karina huffed out a laugh.

"Wherever you want, I still have plenty of money." Karina said, sparing the girl a glance.

"How about that one Cafe we've both been wanting to go to?" Winter asked.

Karina's eyes lit up, and most of the anger was replaced with a longing for a treat from the Cafe. "Samuels brought me a crepe from that Cafe the other day and oh, it was to die for." Karina said, nearly drooling at the thought of the treat she normally couldn't stand.

"I thought you hated crepes?" Winter asked.

"Exactly. It was so good I actually enjoyed it." Karina beamed, leaving out the part of her hurling it back up mere moments after consuming the treat.

Karina parked out front of the Cafe, grabbing her wallet, phone and vape before stepping out of the vehicle. Winter followed her, both girls stepping into the building.

They both peered up at the menu above the counter, soft music played in the background and the scent of sugary treats was strong but not strong enough to be bitter. "Michigan wind, eh?" The man next to Karina joked.

He was easily 5'10", a shaved head, khaki pants and a white long sleeved polo shirt with Hey Dude shoes on.

His shirt was lightly wrinkled, and Karina could smell the sweat and excessive Axe cologne wafting off of the man in waves. Karina gave the man a tight-lipped smile, glad she didn't take the ring off.

She was only 4'10", which played into her favor as she placed her left hand on the counter and leaned up to tell the barista her order.

"A mocha latte and a peanut butter crepe with chocolate drizzle and a small cup of strawberries, please." Karina said, knowing she'd regret the crepe.

The barista smiled and put the order into the computer before pulling up the charge, as Winter had already ordered herself.

"Twenty-three seventy, please." The barista said, and Karina swiped her card, using her hand to hide her pin from the man who kept leering over her.

"It'll be out shortly, take a seat anywhere." Karina smiled at the barista, silently wishing Kai were here to ward off the man who wouldn't take the ring on her finger as a hint.

Karina limped back over to where Winter sat at a table with two chairs. The white-haired girl gave Karina a pointed look and Karina rolled her eyes, knowing the man was still following. He pulled out her chair for her, his hand brushing her ass.

Karina whirled around, ready to rip him a new one.

"Listen, I don't know you, neither does my sister-in-law, you need to leave us alone. Especially after touching me." Karina said, green eyes as hard and cold as Kai's could get.

"There's no way you're married. You carry yourself too confidently." He says, brown eyes burning holes into her.

"If you were my wife, I'd break you into a submissive little bitch." He continued, reaching for Karina. She slapped him, the entire Cafe going silent.

"Get away from me before I call the fucking cops you pervert." Karina growled.

The man growled, making another move this time to lunge at Karina, but Samuels was much faster.

Samuels was in uniform, likely coming from Kai's campaign. "Sir, I'm going to need you to vacate the premises." Samuels says, tone dripping in authority.

Karina spares a look at Winter, noticing her gripping her phone until her knuckles turned white. An apologetic look crossed Winter's face and Karina's gaze softened, silently telling her it was okay.

After finally being able to eat, Karina and Winter stopped at a gas station and got gas, soda, and Kai's chapstick before heading to town Square where the campaigns were holding an event.

Upon parking, Karina spots Kai sitting in Samuels car smoking a cigarette, the elder detective stood some twenty feet away with two other officers, keeping watch over the public.

Karina and Winter get out, approaching the car.

Karina knocked on the window quietly, Kai's deep brown almost black eyes instantly whirling in her direction.

Karina steps back and Kai steps out of the car, allowing her to engulf him in a tight hug. He simply pats her back three times, and she does the same. A code Winter still didn't understand.

"I brought you a chapstick and a lemon water." Karina said, handing both items to him.

His lips twitched, amusement gleaming in his otherwise cold orbs. He nods before his eyes turn cold again. "Samuels informed me of an incident an hour ago. Were you harmed at all?" Kai asked, and Karina felt a pang of anxiety crawl down her spine.

She'd already been the reason behind at least six murders in the past month, and if he found out about the mall incident that day he'd have at least four more victims instead of one.

"No, I wasn't." Karina said, secretly enjoying his way of fussing over her.

"Bullshit, you were limping." Kai growled, tilting his head slightly and glaring at her.

Karina wasn't a fool, the love in his eyes outshined anything cold and negative he could throw her way. He was misogynistic yes, and despite her issues with that she couldn't really care. He took good care of her.

"Unrelated." Karina said simply, trying to brush the subject away.

"So more people put their hands on you?" Kai growled, becoming increasingly angry.

Karina sheepishly shrugged, Winter behind her nodding.
