Plant of the Day
Sunday 26 May 2024
In my friend’s lovely garden she has created an informal hedge with Libertia grandiflora (New Zealand satin flower). Strong-growing, evergreen clumps of leaves line the entrance and now are covered with white, bowl-shaped flowers. In the autumn the flowers are followed by round seed pods which turn black when they mature.

It starts with the low call of the mourning doves.
The day is the coolest it will be and the shadows creep along the street as they run from the sun. It's always a distinct smell that lingers in the air, but one that can only be described as summer. Harkening back to the days of your youth, to long days spent doing nothing while complaining about the heat, to laughs shared with your friends while doing stupid shit, to tears shed because of sunburns and exhaustion.
Your body carries with it memories that you have since forgotten, memories that can return at the drop of a hat thanks to the specific combination of the sun on your skin and the call of the doves and the intro to that hit song from years ago. The particular sound of ice clinking against your cup or the feel of juice dripping down your chin after biting into a piece of your favorite fruit or the smell of chlorine or salt or dirt, mixing into a body of water that hits you just right.
It starts with the low call of the mourning doves, piercing your heart with stunning precision, knocking the breath from your lungs, even if just for a moment.
#there's this specific combination of sensations that just#take me back to when i was six with my cousin playing in front of his friend's house with trees that shaded the entire street#as the caw of a crow came moments before the call of the mourning dove#and another wherein i remember visiting my sister at the house where she grew up when i was four#the old stuffy feeling of the glass displays with porcelain dolls not meant for children and how everything was tinged blue#the call of my sister before she dragged me out of the house and into the sun (and man i've always hated the sun)#the scrape of my knees on the pavement as i tripped and the laugh of the best friend who she no longer talks to#the smell of the evergreen hedges that bordered the property offering nothing but home to spiders and lizards and the like#then falling asleep in the park as a teenager as i waited for my friend to come out; the feeling of safety that has since been torn from me#the grass prickled the skin of my arms and legs and the heat was unbearable but it was worth it and i would've done it time and again#and they're all so fucking visceral as though happening only yesterday#x:ix

Myrtle
Myrtle is more foliar than floral. Old landscapes of the Victorian Era may still include myrtle, Myrtus communis. It is quite a survivor. It had been popular for centuries because of its resiliency. It is very conducive to the sort of formal hedging that was popular during that time. As formal hedges became old fashioned, so did myrtle. Yet, it is still more sustainable than more popular…

Plants are so fucking weird dude. Im sitting here thinking about red vs evergreen huckleberries and how the plants themselves are so incredibly different and we must just call them both huckleberries because their fruits look similar because theres no way they can be that closely related but no. Theyre in the same fucking genus. Like sure its a big genus but my animal obsessed self just cant wrap my head around it. Utterly unreasonable. Thats like if cows and bison were in the same genus
#anyways if you live in the pnw PLANT RED HUCKLEBERRIES#they are so so delicious and native and good for wildlife and also nothing is funnier than how goddamned pink the berries are#'red huckleberry' no. those bitches are highlighter pink and we all know it.#you can also plant evergreen huckleberry and they make great hedges but theyre not as tasty imo

Euonymus Green Spire
Makes a lovely evergreen hedge.
Plant with bonemeal for root development & feed with growmore fertiliser, which has a high nitrogen content.
"Euonymus 'Green Spire'" is a popular variety of Euonymus fortunei, known for its upright, columnar growth habit, making it an excellent choice for hedging or as a structural plant in garden designs.
It is characterized by its small, glossy, green leaves and its ability to maintain a dense, bushy shape with minimal pruning.
Key points about its care and characteristics:
Light: Thrives in both full sun and partial shade, though it may exhibit the best leaf color and density in well-lit conditions.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but is quite adaptable to different soil types, including clay, sand, and loam.
Watering: Needs regular watering, especially in dry periods, but is relatively drought-tolerant once established.
Pruning: Can be pruned to shape in late winter or early spring, though it naturally grows in a compact, upright form.
"Euonymus 'Green Spire'" is appreciated for its versatility and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for gardeners looking to add evergreen structure to their landscapes.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 14 April 2024
A useful small-leaved hedging plant is Lonicera ligustrina var. pileata (box-leaved honeysuckle). This low spreading evergreen shrub responds well to clipping and has small tubular cream flowers in late spring, followed by purple berries.
