maaaybe bucktommy isn’t endgame but i don’t think it’s necessarily just a plot device for bucks development either..the showrunners purposely chose to reintroduce an existing character that has positive established relationships with other main characters besides buck - they don’t want viewers to dislike tommy!! while he is the catalyst for bucks sexual awakening, he also has a nuanced backstory that they’ve already expanded on (in regards to gerrard and his time at the 118) and have numerous other routes to take his character on (reconciling his behavior with hen and chim). his reintroduction has implications for the development of numerous characters, most important of which is himself.

also..the show runners know how shipping works. fans don’t ship their faves with random side characters- they ship them with other mains!! to give any relationship for buck other than buddie half a fighting chance they had to make his partner someone we already know and enjoy, which gives me some hope for the future of bucktommy. it’s also apt timing to bring on another series regular if bobby really is going to leave after this season (if not for the relationship then think of all the procedural possibilities that tommy brings to the table).

tldr tommy is good people!! and his character has many possibilities outside of his relationship with buck
