Seeing Green Ch.3
Well, here we go guys, a double chapter in one. I would like to thank everyone for having patience with me.
Marinette smiled to herself after her date with Damian. It had been so wonderful, he was wonderful, a perfect gentleman. His smile had sent her heart fluttering, something that hadn't been accomplished since… Since Adrien.
Mari's smile dimmed slightly, but she shook her head. No! Adrien would not ruin this for her. At least this guy, this wonderful, handsome guy had an actual romantic interest in her. It would be different, she wouldn't be chasing a dream, she'd be chasing a reality, something within her reach.
"Tikki, I think I want to go out for a bit. Clear my head before bed. That date with Damian… I'm a bit restless now." Marinette stretched, now dressed in comfortable pajamas. The teen headed to her hotel room window and opened it. She winked at her Kwami. "Alright, Tikki, Spots on!"
As Ladybug leapt into the night, pulling herself to a ledge cross from her room. She knew she shouldn't be Ladybug, not in Gotham, as she should be in Paris, but it just felt so odd not to be out on patrol. She thanked whatever god there was that she had gotten Viperion and Ryuko back on as full time heroes. It had made her stress of leaving Paris on this trip a little less stressful, and having Klaaki helped when she had to purify the akumas.
As she landed on the rooftop, she barely avoided landing in some kind of white substance on the ledge. She frowned at it, silently noting that this must be a popular place for birds, before she took that moment to step onto the center of the roof and take in the city. It was such a condensed place, full of tall buildings, of noisy cars and pollution. It was worlds away from Paris.
So lost in her thoughts, she almost didn't hear the sound of someone landing on the roof behind her. She turned and spotted a red and black caped figure. Her brows rose as she realized that this was one of Gotham's vigilantes. She wracked her brain right quick, and a name came to mind; Red Robin.
"Can I help you with something?" He began advancing towards her, and Ladybug's defenses went up. Shit, she wasn't supposed to be spotted. His frown was more evident as he drew near, crossing his arms. "I don't think I've ever seen you around Gotham before."
"Please, I… I am friendly. I just came to America for a small vacation." Marinette groaned mentally at the lie as she held her hands up, showing she wasn't armed. But she could see he had weapons on him, and that made the hairs on the back of her head stand on end. She could probably take him in a fight, but she didn't want to risk hurting one of Batman's partners, especially since he was part of the Justice League. Whether they believed her situation in Paris or not, she still needed some help. "A- and to speak to Monsieur Batman. I am Ladybug, a hero from Paris. We really need help, things are getting out of hand!"
"What do you mean? What's going on in Paris?" He was silent the entire time Ladybug spoke, explaining in detail what had been going on for the past few years. She could feel as Red Robin glanced her over, calculating something. He then tilted his head, as if listening to something, before he uncrossed his arms and they dropped to his sides. "Well, Ladybug, while that tale seems hard to believe… Batman will meet you here tomorrow. If you get up to any funny business, we won't hesitate to take you out, understand?"
"Oui, Monsieur. Merci." Ladybug's shoulders sagged in relief. It had been a split minute cover story, but now it had probably given her the opening she had so desperately needed. She smiled at him, and he brushed past her, heading towards the ledge facing the hotel. "Oh, be careful! I think some birds made a mess there, you wouldn't want to step in it!"
Red Robin froze and glanced down at where he was about to step. He stared for what felt like several minutes, before he tensed and let out a curse that made Ladybug flush. He knelt down, holding what she saw was a cotton swag, swiping up some of the substance, then putting it in a glass vial attached to his belt. Without another glance back at her, he was gone, leaving Ladybug standing there, very confused. With a shake of her head, she turned around and went back to soaring across Gotham with her yo-yo.
…
Nino frowned as he watched his girlfriend sitting across the table from him. He had wanted a nice dinner with her, at the hotel's restaurant, but here she was, either typing away on her cell phone, or telling him about something new Lila had told her. He felt himself getting a headache. It was just non stop with his girlfriend and Lila, the world never seemed to go still, it was constantly in this spiralling vortex.
"I mean, I can't believe she's help Batman! THE Batman!" Alya exclaimed, her eyes lit up with excitement and eagerness, as she finished posting the story on the Ladyblog. She didn't notice Nino's blank look as she squirmed in her seat, beaming. "Imagine helping in take down Two Face in such a way, Nino! She's so awesome, I just can't believe she chose me to be her best friend! I mean, she could have chosen anyone, but she chose me! She's even going to let me do another interview with her tonight, about the time she got all streamy in a hot tub with Damian and his brother Tim…"
"Alya, babe… Can you please put the phone away? I wanted to have a nice dinner with you, it's been forever since we had a nice date." Nino reached out and took her free hand, giving it a light squeeze. Alya gave him a warm smile and set her phone aside, and they both glanced at their menus. "See anything you'd like?"
"Oh, steak frites would be nice. Did you know Lila has an uncle who runs a farm that gives every high end restaurant their meat? She's met all of the world famous chefs, maybe next time she can get us into a fancy restaurant for another date!" Alya grinned at Nino, who felt his headache worsen. They rarely had alone time together, but even when they did, Lila always seemed to somehow come up, whether it be in conversation or her calling them in the middle of the date.
"I think we can manage without Lila, babe. I think the salmon would be nice." Nino looked up from his menu, only to see Alya back on her phone, hearing the notifications dinging frantically. "Babe, your phone.."
"Hold on, Nino, Lila's just telling me that Damian's going to take her to a high class party tomorrow night! She's sooo lucky, having him take her to the fanciest restaurant in Gotham."
"Alya, can we-"
"Do you think maybe she'll introduce us to him? I'd love to get an interview with THE son of Bruce Wayne! I'd be the first to get his photo, the Ladyblog would blow up on a national level!"
"Alya-"
"Maybe I could get interviews from.the entire Wayne family! And when her and Damian get married, Lila will let me cover their wedding-"
"ALYA, ENOUGH ABOUT LILA!"
A pin dropping could have been heard in that restaurant. Nino had jumped to his feet and trembled with visible annoyance, while Alya sat there, clutching her phone tightly in her hands. She frowned and opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Nino stormed out of the dining room, leaving its patrons staring in his wake.
Once out of the dining room, Nino felt like crying. He had planned a nice evening, he had combed his hair back, had dressed up nicely, but it still wasn't enough. He didn't feel like enough for Alya anymore. She always seemed to be grasping for whatever big and shiny thing came next, whatever would make the most tantalizing news story.
He soon came into the bar area, leading to the hotel lobby, when he spotted Miss Bourbon. She was sitting at a table, nursing a glass of wine as she looked miserable. He hesitated, telling himself to continue back to his room, to cool off. He had never actually talked to the TA personally, but he thought she seemed nice, though very tough. He had felt bad when Lila had told Alya that the woman had been trying to escape Canada, to escape a scandal with sleeping one of her male students. Boy, that rumour had spiralled out of control and had nearly cost the woman her job, but soon seemed improbable when it was found out she worked at an all girl's academy.
Nino found himself walking over to her, meeting her inhumanly purple eyes as he took a seat across the table from her as she sipped her wine.
"Mr. Lahiffe, is everything alright? You seem rather miffed." Eva set down her glass of wine and sat to attention. It sort of surprised Nino at how quick she was to come to his aid, that she actually did care, despite the poison Lila had spread. He clenched his hands ever so slightly, looking down at the table, frowning. "Nino?"
"Miss Bourbon… You know Lila is lying, right? I've known for a long time, but she made Alya so happy, but when things got out of hand and I tried suggesting things might be false…" Nino shut his eyes tightly, letting out a shuddering breath. "I don't recognize my girlfriend anymore. I'm just so drained all the time, and I feel like my thoughts and interests don't matter anymore."
He opened his eyes again, when he felt Miss Bourbon take his hand and give it a small squeeze.
"Have you told anyone else about this, Nino?" Eva's voice was soft, non judgemental. "Now, usually I'd say try talking to her about it. But from what I've seen, she brushes you off, huh?"
"I tried talking to Adrien, but he keeps saying that it'll turn out, that since we really love each other, we'll make it through." Nino glanced at the glass of wine between then, and sighed, putting his head in his hands. Silence hung over them for a long time.
"Now, I don't have a track record of relationships I can give you advice from, but I think you already know what to do, Nino. You don't need me to tell you."
Nino glanced up and smiled at her, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. The duo never knowing a certain Italian girl watching them from the lobby.
…
The next morning, Marinette was still grinning as she made her way down to the lobby. She practically skipped her way out of the elevator, her mood slightly lifted more when she saw that some of her classmates were already there, meaning she hadn't been left behind again.
"Good morning, Alix." Marinette grinned as the girl spotted her and headed her way, though her steps faltered slightly when she spotted Kim, Juleka and Rose were headed her way. She tensed, dread clawing its way up her spine as they were upon her. "Oh.. Hello, everyone."
Their expressions were unreadable, before Rose's eyes flooded with tears and she threw herself into Marinette's arms and began to sob. It was then she realized that their expressions were not guilt ridden.
"I'm s- so-o sorr-ry Marinette!" Rose blubbered out, the tears dripping down her sweet face rapidly. Marinette opened her mouth to speak, but found herself speechless.
"We were really stupid, Marinette." Juleka spoke up as she awkwardly rubbed Rose's back, meeting Mari's gaze. Then her voice trembled as when she spoke again. "We were horrible to you, over something that could be easily disproved."
"We all did some very stupid shit." They all glanced over to the elevators, just as Nino stepped into the lobby, his face clouded with shame. "I was the worst, dudette… We've known each other for so long, but… I threw that all away, didn't I?"
"We all should have listened to you, Mari. You'd have no reason to lie, we just all thought it was because if Adrien at first, but then things escalated so fast." Kim muttered, running his fingers through his hair, looking rather distressed.
"Yeah, you all should have listened to me." Marinette finally spoke after a few beats of uncomfortable silence. She gave Rose's back a gentle rub before she stepped away to cross her arms, closing herself off to them. Her expression hardened as she glared at her classmates. "Most of you had known me for years, yet you thought I'd act that way? While I appreciate your apologies, I'm not forgiving any of you. Yet."
Tikki was proud of her Chosen in that moment. Marinette knew she had grown a spine, she wasn't going to be the people pleaser anymore, she had started thinking for herself for once.
"I might, keyword being might, forgive you guys, eventually. But right now, nothing has really proven you guys won't turn on me again. I mean, honestly, look at Alya, Ivan, Mylène, Nathaniel, Max, and Sabrina. They're still lapping it all up, and one of them used to be my best friend! So I'm sorry, but I'm not going to forgive any of you just yet." Marinette shrugged at their slightly crestfallen expressions, ignoring the guilt in her gut. "But you guys actually have some redemption, at least you guys didn't know since the beginning, like Adrien."
The following silence as almost deafening, then Alix grabbed Marinette by the shoulders, her expression murderous. Marinette flinched, feeling her skin bruise under the girl's fierce grip.
"That son of a bitch knew this entire time?" Alix's voice was soft, but deadly, promising whoever would face her fury would taste blood that night. Marinette merely shrugged once again, looking indifferent to the fact.
“He’s known ever since she came back to school. He told me to not expose her, that her lies would expose themselves.” She set her hands on her hips, a cold smile spreading across her face as she met Alix’s eyes. “Well, they’re sure as hell taking their time to expose themselves.”
Alix and the others looked as if they were about to explode, but it was cut off by the arrival of Lila and her court that were still trapped under her spell, while she hung off of Adrien’s arm.
‘Funny,’ Marinette smirked at the ground, raising a brow ‘,for a girl engaged to Damian Wayne, she’s very friendly with other guys.’
“So Damidarling took me to this amazing restaurant, the lobster was absolutely divine!” Lila cooed, while her noticeably smaller court showered her with praises. She soaked it all up, beaing, though her eyes narrowed when she saw the people surrounding Marinette. Marinette could see the girl sharpening her claws as she sneered at them, “Oh, Marinette, how was your date with the intern? I hoped you enjoyed whatever rundown café his salary could afford.”
“I don’t think they even went to a café, they probably ate out of the trash.” Sabrina chuckled, with Alya letting out an amused snort. This was all white noise to Marinette, so she turned away and met Nino’s pained gaze, and it was obvious what he was going to do, once he got up the nerve.
“Good morning, everyone!” Miss Bustier strode in, beaming at her students as they watched as Miss Bourbon followed soon after, looking exhausted and drained. “Now, I know you’re all rather excited to be in a new city, so I thought that since we’re not leaving for Gotham City Park until around lunch time, I made arrangements for us to go to one of the shopping malls, so you all can have a morning of free time.”
Many faces lit up with excitement, and Mari couldn’t deny that the thought was really enticing. She had wanted to see the fashion of Gotham, maybe see if she could get any inspiration for some new designs, maybe something gritty and rock ‘n’ roll for Uncle Jagged.
The class soon arrived at the mall ,Miss Bustier giving them a time and place to meet at so that they could go to their planned picnic.
Marinette wandered off on her own, not wanting to be stuck with listening to Lila and her tales of Damian Wayne. She felt bad for the guy, she’d hate to see him meet Lila at the gala and get taken in by her lies.
“Marinette?” Damian had just stepped out of a store, his eyes widening a fraction, before his face melted into a smile. He strode over to her, carrying a wrapped box under one arm. “Good morning, Angel. I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
“D-Damian!” Mari’s cheeks burned red and she grinned, stode towards him, letting out a giggle as he pulled her into a hug. “My teacher decided to let us have a free morning. I’m glad she did, now that I got to see you.”
“You’re making me blush, Angel.” Damian’s smile widened, his cheeks going faintly rosy. When Marinette hooked her arm with his, she bit her lower lip when she felt the muscle through the material of his shirt. She felt bad, she was practically ogling him, but it was a physical attraction, right? Something completely natural. “Well, since you’re here, how about I accompany you until you have to leave? Maybe a fun little morning date?”
“I’d love it.” Her heart fluttered, walking with him towards a clothes’ store. She shyly watched him from the corner of her eye as they entered. “I was hoping to see the fashion of Gotham, maybe I could make a new outfit design out of it.”
“You’re into fashion design, right? I mean, last night you said you had designed some stuff for Jagged Stone, right? I looked it all up, you’re really talented, Marinette.” Damian’s voice was warm, gentle. He leaned down, kissing her softly on the cheek. At her look of surprise, he chuckled. “I never got to kiss you back last night, thought I’d return the favour. I hope I didn’t cross a line.”
“No, not at all! I really liked it.” He smelled nice too, whatever his cologne was. Mari pressed her hands to her burning cheeks, trying to calm down the blush, only to nearly run into a mannequin. She squeaked, then took a step back .Her gaze sharpened slightly, and she pulled a sketchbook out of her purse, much to Damian’s surprise. God, she was adorable, with the spark of inspiration that lit up those blue eyes of hers. “Gotham fashion has a lot more dark colours, it’s more elegant, yet practical.”
Damian smiled as he watched her sketch and mutter to herself, feeling himself feel content simply watching her. He had never felt this way around another girl before, he found most girls boring and annoying, as a matter of fact. But Marinette, she was different, he had never had the urge to kiss a girl before, but he found himself want to kiss her until she was breathless, but also to protect her from any harm. But he knew for a fact he shouldn’t rush into anything, that could be a grave mistake, he wanted to know everything about her first.
“Marinette, I see you called your intern boy toy to join you!” Lila stepped from behind a rack, her smile sharp, ferocious, with Alya and Nino close behind. She fluttered her lashes at Damian, smiling prettily. “Wow, Mari, you must be really desperate to get Adrien’s attention if you decided to call an intern here.”
“Mari, girl, this is getting a bit ridiculous. You need to learn that Adrien isn’t interested in you, you need to stop using guys to make him jealous all the time.” Alya rolled her eyes, then returned her gaze to her phone, typing away frantically. Nino scowled at her, but said nothing.
“I know how you must be feeling, Marinette, having both Adrien and Damian Wayne after me, but this jealousy of yours has gone too far.” Lila sneered down, her green eyes glinting with cruel intent. “But I guess a girl like you does deserve an intern, you both kiss ass to get where you want to be.”
“Lila, that’s enough!” Adrien was storming up to the group, roughly shoving Damian away from Marinette, before taking the girl’s arm and pulling her close. “And you, leave Marinette alone! She’s not going to fall for your ploy, pretty boy. I won’t let you hurt her!”
Adrien dragged the protesting Marinette out of the store, Damian and the others close behind. Adrien held Marinette close, then beamed down at her.
“Don’t worry, I won’t let anyone hurt you, ever. That guy won’t make you another notch on his belt, I promise.” Adrien smiled and cupped Mari’s cheek, failing to see the fury flaring in her eyes.
“Adrien, you have crossed a line…” Marinette whispered, fury radiating every from every word. She grabbed the wrist that was near her face tightly, squeezing it so hard that Adrien winced. “I don’t need protection, I am quite capable of taking care of myself, thanks.”
“Marinette, stop hurting Adrien!” Lila screeched, drawing eyes from everyone. She soon burst into crocodile tears, leaning to Alya for support. “Alya, someone, stop her! Her jealousy is getting out of control! I knew she was bitter about me dating a Wayne, but this is too much!”
“You’re not dating Damian Wayne, you little twit.” Damian snapped at Lila, advancing towards Adrien, his green eyes now ice cold. Marinette wrenched free from Adrien’s grip, only to rush to Damian, trembling in his arms as he pulled her close. He met Adrien’s gaze. “You’re Adrien Agreste, correct? I will have to have a talk with my father about having business with your brand in the future…”
“Who the hell do you think you are? I don’t even know you!” Adrien snarled, his hands clenched into fists. That was HIS lady, HIS princess. Every part of him wanted to claw the boy’s eyes out and take Marinette somewhere safe, someplace private. She had been in love with Chat Noir once, she’d definitely love him again.
“Do you not recognize a Wayne when you see one?”
Marinette blinked at the unfamiliar voice, seeing the horror on everyone’s face, then froze as she felt cold steel press against the back of her head.
“Now, which one would be a better target? A Wayne, or his pretty little girlfriend?” Two-Face sneered down at the teens, while his goons had Lila, Alya, and Adrien at gunpoint. He slid a coin from his pocket and flipped it into the air. He caught in one hand, then grinned down at Marinette, then grabbed Damian and held a gun to the boy’s temple. “Rich boy it is. I must say, I’m surprised to see Damian Wayne out in public like this. Your girlfriend must be really special…”
“Damian Wayne?” Mari met Damian’s eyes and felt the blood drain from her face. He was no intern, no… He was Damian fucking Wayne. She would have laughed, if not for the current situation. Her mind racing, her eyes quickly darted around the mall plaza. There was nothing within arm’s reach of her, so she had to deal with her smarts. But first, she had to get everyone else out of here. While Damian was shouting at Two Face, Marinette took the opportunity to tackle the only damned henchman the villain had brought with him, and pinned him to the ground. She looked up and met Alya’s face. “Go, get out of here, now!”
Alya was immediately in gear, grabbing Adrien and Lila’s wrists, taking off towards the exit. Marinette’s relief was short lived when the guy smashed her across the temple, sending her crumpling to the ground.
“Marinette!” Damian shouted and tried to struggle from Two Face’s grip as he watched the blood ooze from his angel’s temple, spilling across the white tile floor.

Somebody to love; Brian May x reader
*Author’s note*
Now this isn’t really a part 2 to Soulmates through music fic but I couldn’t help myself and write a little fluffy piece for this oneshot. Now I’ve already written pt.3 and I just need to do pt.2 hopefully before my schedule gets too crazy with all the research papers I’m going to be doing till May. So again this is just a cute little side shot for pt.1 of a three part oneshot that I had in mind for our loveable astrophysicist because I will tell you guys right now, the next part will be pretty angsty so enjoy the fluff while you can.
Now I’ve changed up some stuff in regards to who wrote what, and since Somebody to Love has been my all time #1 fav. Queen song, I thought about reader-chan writing the song for the purpose of this fic so please NO HATE. Freddie will ALWAYS BE the genius for writing this song. Enjoy my darlings :) don’t forget to reblog and comment.

*Nov. 11th, 1976*
I was just digging through some of my old boxes my mum had brought over to our place. There were photos that either belonged up on the mantel or never deserved to see the light of day and I have no idea why my mother would think Brian should ever see these photos. Just because we’ve been married for 4 months now, doesn’t mean he has to see everything about me.
That’s when I came across a medium sized shoebox that was labeled.
SONG BOX
Oh my god, I had not seen this thing since I was a teenager. I opened it up for shits and giggles and took out every piece of paper that was in that box. Soon the table was practically covered with old songs that I had written growing up.
I picked up one song that I had written at 15 that I for whatever reason I titled, “Swag King”. I cringed as I set it aside and unfolded another one that was called, “”. How I ever got by these song titles I’ll never know. I smiled widely and softly laughed remember how each song was made to about the time I could start song writing at like 13-14 years old.
“What’s got you so happy?” my smile got wider as I felt the familiar arms of my husband Brian wrap around my 6 month baby bump.
Oh did I forget to mention that part. Well apparently Brian and I had gotten so drunk during the after party of the tour that we ended up having unprotected sex and the next thing I knew as I was trying to find me a wedding dress with Veronica, Mary and my mum, I raced to the bathroom and started puking my guts out. Shortly after going to the doctors, it turned out that I was about 8 weeks pregnant.
God I was soo terrified to tell Brian, I mean yeah we’d agreed to have a wedding right after the tour but we weren’t ready to raise a child just yet.
Queen was bigger and more famous than we had ever been, gaining more fans worldwide, albums selling out as soon as they hit the market and songs going straight to #1 on the charts. A child into the mix at this height of fame just wouldn’t be right for us, or our baby.
But bless him when he had found out, he held me that day as I wept hysterically and told me that he still wanted the baby and that no matter what we were gonna be fully supportive of our baby, and he was going to try and be the greatest dad he could be and he told me I’d be the greatest mum to our baby girl. Of course that soon started a debate between us scientists until it finally turned into a bet on what the gender would be.
When it came time for the gender reveal that we wanted to know at the appointment, it turned out that Brian was right so once our baby girl is old enough for camp, we’ll be sending her off the space camp as per request of Dr. Brian May. While if we had had a boy, then we as a family once he was old enough would travel to Africa and go on one of those safaris that I’ve always wanted to go on.
But whatever the gender and no matter the bet, I’m happy that we’re gonna have a baby girl. I’ve always imagined Brian being this overprotective father to his little girls, embarrassing them to no end, but also being the shoulder to cry if they needed it. I know he’s gonna be a great dad to our little princess when she comes out.
“Just looking through some stuff my mum brought over.”
“What kind of stuff?” he asked as he began to softly kiss up and down my neck.
“Just some old photos, home movies she’d thought we’d need to watch and….my box of old song lyrics.” He stopped kissing my neck and said.
“Really, may I have a look?”
“Absolutely not. Just because you are my husband doesn’t give you the right to snooping through my stuff that I’ve kept hidden during my teenage phase.”
“Ohh come now love, I’m sure they aren’t that bad.” He then reached out for the “Swag King” on and read it. I bowed my head into my hands as he said, “I was wrong, this is terrible.”
“Brian!”
“I’m joking! It’s not that bad. I mean ‘Call him the Swag, because he don’t make me gag’. It’s good.”
“You don’t have to lie to me I know that song’s horrible.” I pouted as I sat down on the chair.
“No, no darling I think it’s cute. What’s this one here?” He then reached out for another piece of paper and unfolded it as he placed his head against mine kissing it. “Lovin Elvis?”
“I was 13 when I wrote that give me a break. I was extremely hormonal and you know how much I loved the King. All my friends were crazy about him.”
“Maybe I can have the lads look over this one. Maybe even have it put on the “A day at the races” album.”
“You even take one of these papers and show it to them I swear to god Brian Harold May you will never know what happened to your red special.” That got him to shut up as he put the song away and sat down.
For the next several minutes we went through every song I ever wrote from the time I was a young teenage girl, to about the time Smile was beginning to form.
“Hey (y/n),”
“Hmm?”
“When did you write this one?” Brian said as he flipped the page over revealing the lyrics.
“Is there not a date at the top?”
“No I’m not seeing one.”
“Here hand it over.” He gave me the song and I looked at it to see it titled; “Somebody to love”. I searched for the date and like Brian said I couldn’t find one until it hit me, “Oh wait now I know why. I never dated my songs until after they were complete. But I know this wasn’t written over 10 years ago, in fact I think I wrote this for Smile. Maybe even as Tim was forming Smile back when it was just the two of us.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, but when I ran it by him he told me the concept wasn’t ‘Rock and Roll’ enough. To gospel he said.” He looked over the paper once more and looked at me before taking my hand and suddenly leading me towards the piano we kept in our living room. “Whoa, whoa Bri not so hard you do realize I’m six months pregnant with your child, anymore stress like that and I could burst and we’d have a child on our floor.”
“Sorry love, but I was wondering if you’d play the song for me?”
“Right now?”
“No in the next 10 years, of course now.”
“But Bri it’s not finished, I always hated singing incomplete songs, especially when left in the dust for so long.”
“Just please try, for me my love? For our baby girl? You know she loves it when her mummy sings to her.” He said as he lowered himself down to the ground and wrapped his arms around my bump and leaned his head against it, being sure to look up at me with those puppy blue eyes of his.
“Dick move using our daughter for your personal gain May.” I chuckled.
“But it works every time, don’t it?” I smiled and shook my head at him and agreed to it. I opened the lid to the piano keys and had the sheet music in front of my on the stand and looked at it carefully. I warmed up by playing a few chords and key changes before I dived right into the song.
By the time of the third word, my voice slightly cracked as I said.
“Oh Jesus I forgot how high I wanted that note to be.” And as I sung the last note as low as my voice could go, that’s when the piano playing began to pick up. Like greeting a long lost friend, there was this connection and passion I had back when I had first written this song as my voice grew with a more passionate crescendo as I kept singing the song.
By the time I finished the chorus, I stopped playing and panted heavily. I turned to Brian and he was just in awe at me.
“Well…..what did you think?”
“I think—we just found our literal Queen’s next big hit.” He leaned forward and captured my lips with his as we began to make out right there by the piano.
The next morning arriving at the studio, I had the song in my hand and I was nervously fiddling with it.
“I don’t know Brian what if the guys don’t like it?”
“Then they’d be bloody insane. I mean we were forced to put Roger’s car song on the last album and this song as at least three times as better than that song. They’ll love it darling, just like I did.” He said as he placed his hands on my arms rubbing them comfortingly. I sighed deeply and said.
“Okay I’m sorry. Guess pregnancy heightens my insecurities.”
“It’s going to all work out love, come on before Roger throws another coffee machine for us being late.” He wrapped an arm around me and we both entered the studio.
“About time you two showed up, thought you two would’ve been shagging or something.” Roger teased.
“I’m already pregnant with one child there Rog I don’t suddenly need another seed sprouting this late in the game.” I pointed at him.
“(Y/n) my darling, I swear you just keep getting more radiant with each passing day.” Freddie said as he came up and kissed both my cheeks.
“Oh stop it Fred, you jest.”
“I jest you not darling. The sun can’t compare to the shining light that stands before me.” He praised as he swung my hands back and forth.
“Lads, (y/n) actually has a future song ready for us.” Brian made the announcement.
“Really?” asked Deacy.
“Yeah I….well my mum brought in a bunch of old boxes from my family home and one of them happened to be my old song lyrics box. Filled with all the songs I’ve tried to write since I was 13 and Brian came across this song. It’s not finished and probably needs a lot of work but he says it’s Queen’s next hit. I don’t see it though.”
“Oh don’t be hard on yourself darling. Come now play it for us and show us what you’ve got and then we’ll see where to go from there.” Freddie said as he gestured me toward the piano. He helped me sit down and I thanked him as I set the song on the piano stand and turned toward the boys who were all staring intently at me.
Brian nodded to me and gestured for me to breathe. I took a deep breath and proceeded to play the song for them, just as I had done for Brian last night. Once I was done singing, Deacy, Roger and Freddie were all in deep thought and they all silently looked at each other.
“Well there’s something definitely wrong with your beginning statement before introducing us to this song. And that’s the fact that you don’t think this could be a Queen hit.” Roger stated.
“You’re serious.”
“As serious as he can get, yes it will need a bit of workshop but this song….I’m already hearing the bass for this song in my head right now.” Deacy said.
“Alright my dears, let’s get to work.” And it was then we immediately got to work on recording, ‘Somebody to love’.
“Okay so what I’ve got in mind is that this whole verse here is great, but it’s out of place. I think it should go somewhere after the bridge maybe even the third chorus.” Suggested Freddie.
“Okay I can see that, but then what would the second verse be?” I asked.
“How about this?” suggested Deacy as he held out a piece of paper. I took the paper and saw.
“‘I work hard ((s)he work hard) every day of my life. I work till I ache my bones.’ Yeah I love it Deacy, but why did you put the he/she part in there?”
“Depends on whose singing this song of course.”
“Oh there’s no doubt, (y/n) will sing it. Won’t you darling?”
“Oh no, no, no, no Fred I—”
“Nonsense darling, this is something you clearly wanted to see come to life and I couldn’t sing it with as much passion as you give it. Well I could but I don’t want to.”
“Fred I don’t know, it’s rare when the fans allow a song to be sung by other than you. I mean you are the lead singer after all, they get all credits to singing.”
“Unlike most bands darling we share equal rights to songs. I didn’t reject Brian to taking the main leads to ‘39, hell I suggested you two take lead vocals for the chorus of that song. And I sure as hell wasn’t going to touch Roger’s sexual car song.”
“It’s a metaphor Fred!!”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night dear.” He said as he turned to Roger before turning back to me and placing a hand on my shoulder, “The point is darling, take this as your time to shine as the actual queen of Queen. Do it for us, for my future goddaughter.”
“Did you teach him that?” I said as I turned to Brian who only shrugged but he had that guilty look on his face. I sighed deeply and said.
“Okay, but you guys have to stop guilting me like that. I mean it, you all are just too cute for your own good when you guilt trip me by using my unborn child as an excuse.” Freddie cheered and planted a kiss on my cheek and so it was official that I would be the lead singer for this song.
The song took a few days to record ever instrument and every playback so that our voices sounded like a choir of 100 singers. I had to practice which vocalization techniques I wanted on the repeated phrase of “fine me somebody to love”. I ended up trying over 10 until I was finally proud with one of them.
*May 18th, 1977, Houston, Texas*
It was like any other concert, not quite as stressful as a tour where you’re managed like crazy in order to keep a schedule and then move onto the next city, here we were just performing for a couple of days. I had just gotten done with maternity leave about a month ago after giving birth to my daughter, Chloe Franklin May.
And Brian was over the moon the second he got to hold his daughter in his arms. The boys were so happy for us and they fawned over their niece and spoiled her rotten, mostly Freddie of course. I had Chloe back home with my mum while I had to get back to the boys but I knew this concert was going to be broadcasted so I hope they were watching the telly back home.
We had just gotten done with playing Bohemian Rhapsody when Freddie spoke into the microphone.
“Thank you. Featuring (Y/n) May at the piano.” The spotlight shined on me and I waved to the audience who cheered, “We’ve missed her dearly since her maternity leave, but we’re glad to have her back. Right now we’d like to play a song written by (Y/n) when she was still a single gal, probably dedicated it to a certain man who’d soon become her husband.” I flipped Fred off and he chuckled at me, “It’s currently rising at the tops of the singles charts thanks to you. And featuring on lead vocals herself the true queen of Queen. Here’s (Y/n) May with her song ‘Somebody to love’.”
I played a chord of the piano and I began to sing the song. I first started off softly much like the record and then the boys backed me up on the low note for the word ‘love’. I picked up on the piano as Fred came and sat down beside me joining me until it became a brief double piano duet.
But then Freddie allowed me to take his mic stand as I now stood up and sung the first verse as I walked to center stage. The spotlight shining on me as I finally reached center stage, just a few feet away from Brian as the boys joined in behind me. By the time the second verse kicked in, my voice grew with passion as I allowed my throat to give some of the notes that sudden growl that I did on the record that no one not even the boys saw coming when we recorded it.
By the end of the 2nd chorus, I was so into the song, that my body suddenly lost control as I was lost in the rhythm of the song. I even undid my bun and allowed my long hair to fly outwards which got some cheers from the crowd and I threw my scrunchy toward the audience as I sung with more passion.
Finally Brian’s guitar solo came up. He came right up to me, serenading me with his guitar which never failed to send shivers up my spine. Much like how a male emperor penguin who serenades his future mate with his love song.
I smiled at Brian and the two of us touched our foreheads together as he kept playing his solo and I vocalized into the microphone before resuming the next chorus before the bridge that originally was the second verse that I had written.
The boys and I put all of our passion and heart into playing and singing the song and then once the repetition part of ‘find me somebody to love’ came on, I led the audience into clapping to the rhythm of Roger’s drumming and said.
“I want to see every single person in this room, see every single pair of hands. Three! Four!” We then began singing the mantra and I could hear the audience singing along as I began my vocalization while the boys sang the mantra. Letting my voice both slide or slowly crescendo then decrescendo as I adlibbed some speaking lines and then once the last part of the mantra began I was already belting out an “ahh” vocalization.
Suddenly I felt Brian’s arms around me and as I turned his face was right up close to mine. As I softly crescendo my last solo I wrapped my arm around Brian’s neck and as I sang the decrescendo vocalization of the word “love”, Brian slowly dipped me and I leaned my head backwards, feeling his nose softly graze my neck.
When he pulled me back up, our lips met and Roger and Fred took over the last few lines as Brian and I swayed softly in each other’s arms. Our foreheads leaning against each other’s and once the song had ended, the entire stadium roared with applause. Suddenly I was snapped out of my trance realizing that we were performing a concert.
I hid my face into Brian’s shoulder but he took me out of his embrace and held my hand upward and gestured to me and the audience seemed to cheer louder, chanting my name.
I couldn’t help the wide smile that spread across my face as I took in the fact that a song that was once criticized by my brother as too gospel, was now Queen’s next big hit among its fans.
After our performances in Houston we were now back home in London. Brian and I cuddled up in bed just shortly after putting Chloe in her crib by singing her to sleep since she enjoyed both her parent’s singing to her. My head resting on Brian’s bare chest as his hand stroked through my hair.
“You know what I had realized, about when I wrote Somebody to love? Well it was more like after I stopped writing it.”
“What?”
“The next day, that’s when Tim had introduced you as Smile’s new guitar player.”
“The day we first met.” He muttered. I nodded and raised my head up and placed it against my palm as I stared up at Brian.
“Guess that song was magical even with its incompleteness.” Brian smiled and stroked my cheek as he said.
“Glad I found it among those other songs. I love you (Y/n) May, you are my somebody to love.”
“And you are mine, Brian May.” I leaned down and captured his lips with mine and we both kissed each other softly but with so much love until finally we cuddled close to each other and went to sleep.

BTS Speak Yourself MetLife Day 1 Fanaccount
Holy shit they went above for Dionysus. There were these silver blow-up leopards that inflated as the song began and then there were the columns and everything else and god I love that stage.
Their intros. OTL Taehyung called himself a good boy and they purpled us, Suga said we were such a pretty crowd it was like a dream, Jin called us their wings and Jungkook said it felt like they were flying. So much cheese and it was only the beginning.
Hobi threw so many hearts during Wings and he was just walking attractive swag during Trivia: Just Dance.
During Euphoria, as Jungkook was getting hooked up to his platform thing to fly around, he heard the fanchants and couldn’t hide his smile.
Jimin was also all smiles during his solo, and it got bigger when we sang parts of the lyrics for him and ended with a hand heart.
Namjoon started Trivia: Love with a hand heart.
The Army Bombs were rainbow for Boy with Luv.
The old songs they performed were like rock remixes and I need them on all on an album together.
Fire... Jimin was literally on FIRE and it was pain.
Namjoon sprayed so many bottles of water over the crowd, the section by him had to be soaked lol.
Taehyung, that man is too powerful by far. His performance was absolute sex, but like sex where you’re laughing the whole time as you lose your mind. He’s so charismatic, but in an entirely different way from say the rapline or the dance line and I don’t know how to explain it.
THE FUCKING ADLIBS DURING THE TRUTH UNTOLD LIKE ALL OF THEM DID IT AND IT ALL SOUNDED PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!
I am changing my sexuality to the rapline’s looks during Outro: Tear. They’re that powerful.
There were these bouncy slide/cushion/playhouse things for Anpanman and they had so much fun being idiots on them. Jin tried jumping onto a seat but absolutely failed and fell off multiple times, then came and pushed Yoongi off when Yoongi sat down. Jin and Hobi slid down the slide together, as did Jimin and Jungkook.
THEN!!!!!! these dorks, as they were going back up the catwalk to the main stage following the camera, they decided it was a great idea to shake their butts/twerk at the camera.
During So What Jin, Namjoon, and Hobi were messing around being super dumb with the camera, Taehyung was filming all the members with a selfie stick, Yoongi and Jin then filmed Taehyung, and Jungkook pretended to golf with a selfie stick.
Jungkook said we were the light to their night.
They all had their own color microphones and ear pieces. Jimin had gold, Namjoon blue, Taehyung green, Hobi sparkly blue, Jin sparkly pink, and Jungkook and Yoongi both had black.
Jimin kept adlibbing Make it Right when they went to take the photo and Namjoon called us all beautiful..
They made us do the wave with the lightsticks, Jungkook being a shit and showing us how to do it, but the techs turned off the lights the first time lol. When we finally succeeded, Jin said “Yeah Armies, babies! You made it, Army!” So dumb lol.
Taehyung said we’d be forever his her.
Jin’s ending: “It was a busy night but thank you for coming. When you’re at school, there’s a lot of stress so I hope this was a stress relief, screaming is the best stress reliever (and of course the maknae line had to start screaming into their mics while waving them). Everyone please be happy til we come back.
Yoongi’s ending: (He got distracted by chopper flying over the stadium before he even began). NY transportation is stressful but tonight’s performance relived that stress. NY knows how to play. Thank you for coming. (He made us scream for him multiple times, the shit).
J-Hope’s ending: Such beautiful weather for a beautiful concert with our beautiful Army. You are beautiful, it’s a beautiful day.
Taehyung’s ending: My time, good boy. I sttill can’t believe I’m performing this wonderful event. Yesterday I ate *something* but it was a lucky charm to see this moment with Army. We always purple you. Good boy, good army.
Jungkook’s ending: (he looked so cute with his hood up) When I came to stadium, I wanted to be with you guys, and I imagined it being amazing, but it was beyond imagination and only possible through your love and support. I hope this was an everlasting memory to you, I love you.
Jimin’s ending: Did you have fun? I had fun. This field is very beautiful now so I don’t want to go home but I have to go, but I’ll never forget the beautiful day here, I promise. Thank you and love you all (He made a heart with his arms and did a cute little turn).
Namjoon’s ending: (Taehyung put glasses on him and said he looked like superhero, and Hobi sang the Boy with Luv line “You’re my teacher”). New Jersey, we got lots in common, the same initials and when I was 13 I stayed- (he laughed and didn’t finish his thought). This is truly the most beautiful stadium we’ve ever seen and back in the day, 5 years ago, we were at our show in Broadway(Playstation Theater, I WENT TO THAT CONCERT AND WAS FOILED OF MY ONE CHANCE TO MEET THEM) and we couldn’t do the encore because of stuff and I still remember that. And then, we were truly nothing and they use this phrase a lot ‘from nothing to something’ and tonight I realize we did become something because you guys became our something. I love you guys. Lesson over! Army, let your light shine on us. You’re the stars and lighthouse that lead us through the night.
Namjoon got everyone to turn their army bombs off and put on their cellphone lights instead and it was beautiful.
Jimin ran around the stage yelling “I want to see you” and “I love you” at the end.
The Kim brothers plus J-Hope did a bunch of hearts together.
Jin somehow got a paper heart to pull out for the final goodbye bow.
Jimin wished us all a good night.
Let me put it this way for y’all: I am very proud of myself I didn’t cry I had such a good time.

Yoongi Min as a Boyfriend
-Both in personality and in the zodiac. Yoongi is a Pisces.
Are you ready for that D-boy swag? You not ready…
-Having to be quiet while he’s sleeping because the slightest thing wakes him up.
“Ay, why are you so loud.”
*Realizing you’re in the living room with a bag of chips and he was dead sleep five minutes ago with the door closed.*
-Constantly having your picture taken, whether you know it or not. Yoongi loves taking photos, it’s a passion of his, and why wouldn’t he want pictures of the closest person to his heart?
“Turn your head to the left. I want the sun on your skin.”
“Yoongi! Take the damn picture this is the third one.”
*Him giving you those ‘don’t get loud with me woman’ eyes*
-As a Pisces, Yoongi is many things. Compassionate, gentle, wise, intuitive and musical. Some aspect of his personality fills his day to day to life. He would certainly like to be with someone who has some of his traits as well.
-He’s also fearful, prone to sadness, and being a victim. Keep this bun close to your heart, and even though he looks tough, you might have to be the one rescuing him.
-His gummy smile
-Him being annoyed that you keep talking about how cute his gummy smile is.
-Secretly, he loves it and even when he’s just looking at you, he can’t help but think of it and smile.
-He isn’t too big on pet names. He doesn’t mind if you call him one just don’t overdo it. When you’re alone though, he calls you something sweet and simple like baby, babe or woman. (lol srsly, he’d do it just to annoy you)
-Enjoys holding hands in public. If no one is around he’ll kiss your lips, otherwise, you can expect him to kiss your hands.
-Being a Pisces means that deep inside, Yoongi is a romantic, he’s unconditionally generous to you. It is deep inside though, so don’t go expecting the works in front of others, he’s subdued about it.
-Yoongi shows his love through actions. He may scold you often or give you looks like he’s annoyed, but he wakes up and pulls the blanket over you. He buys you dinner when he knows you’ve been working all day. Rubs your feet without being asked.
-Yoongi knows what he wants from the relationship. He isn’t subtle, nor does he hide how he feels.
-He’s honest and blunt. He’s not trying to hurt your feelings but if something isn’t right, he’s going to speak up about it.
“How do you like these shoes?”
*sighs because you don’t really want to know, you just want to hear him say it’s good*
“I don’t know why you ask me when you know I’ll give an honest opinion.”
-Motionless Min is real.
-He’s vegging out, snacks all around him, it’s 12 pm and this is his second nap. Don’t fight it, and don’t F with his vibe, just join him.
-Couples naps!
-Yoongi is the type to fall asleep holding you, but turns over and just snuggles his back against yours during the night.
-Actually prefers being the small spoon, because he likes it when you kiss his back.
-Pisces is a passionate lover, short-term relationships don’t do them well, so when he gets into it, know that he plans to stick this out.
-Blindingly loyal. He trusts you, doesn’t check up on you all the time, gives you, your space because he knows who you are. Why would you change?
-Because of that, he’s also prone to be being taken advantage of. He’s been hurt by others before. Of course, he knows that you aren’t them, but he doesn’t want to be hurt again. Be as open and honest with him, as he is with you.
-Yoongi is a leg man. Do you have some long legs? Shapely too? He’ll find himself staring at them, probably wondering what they look like wrapped around him in a shorter skirt.
-That’s probably how you met, sitting at a table, legs crossed, and he was just staring.
“Look any harder and they’ll come off.”
“Really now? Where would they go? I know a few places, I’d like to see them.”
-Surprised by his answer, and high-key feeling his confidence.
-Yoongi is not the type to start sweating over flirting. He’s casual and cool, and that’s what attracted you to him.
-Pisces can be very expressive an open with the people they call a friend and that they are closest to. He may be slow to warm up but once he is, it’s a fire that you enjoy burning in.
-Doesn’t let anyone talk shit about his girl. If you’re his, everyone better respects that. He doesn’t take kindly to any discrimination nor shit-talking. Period.
“You know what they’re saying Yoongi, about me, cause I’m black and this is Korea…”
*placing his hands on your face* “Who are you dating? Korea or me?”
“You.” *Closing your eyes as he kisses you*
“Then fuck what they say, I’m with you until you don’t want me.”
-Knowing that won’t be true. EVER
-He’s warm with you. Not detached or withdrawn. He can be quiet and introspective, but, he won’t make you feel like you’re alone.
-He loves basketball. Can you play? No? That’s fine, he’ll teach you. Can you? Then square up baby cause you’ll be playing one on one a lot.
-Speaking of one of one, he’s a bit of a dominant.
-Suga probably enjoys body praise and giving instruction. He enjoys watching his baby girl writhe under his touch and beg for more.
-Doesn’t enjoy loud places or places with a lot of crowds. He’s private and rather be walking in a park than at an amusement park.
-He’ll enjoy taking you out for quiet dinners in small cozy restaurants rather than big name chains.
-When he’s in love, he’s in love. He’ll even write music about you and get embarrassed if you start to cry.
-He’s a cuddler when he’s awake. Probably likes to lay his head on your stomach or butt. Especially if it’s soft.
*moves your butt like he’s fluffing a pillow*
“What are you doing Yoongi?”
“Getting comfortable.” *lays his head down*
-TONGUE TECHNOLOGY!
-He has a thing for rubbing his tongue across your lips, down your neck. He’s talented with it, and you nearly die every time.
-Pisces are hard working and goal oriented. Money is great, but accomplishing their dreams is what’s important. Yoongi will want you to be supportive of his dreams and help him make it there. He’ll always want you to do, what you feel is best.
“If this is your dream baby, I’m behind you, you know that.”
*pouty face* “Why are you so good to me?”
*shrugs* “If I’m not who else will put up with you?”
-Can be a bit sarcastic, and a little mouthy.
-Curses a lot.
-Doesn’t mean to, it just happens.
*Surprises him on his birthday with his family* “What the fuck?”
*Children in the room* “What? Oh sorry, don’t curse kids.”
Basically, you have a boyfriend with a heart of gold. Yoongi seems cold but he a softy. He isn’t so good on sharing his intimate feelings, but give him time and watch how he opens up. This tongue talented rapper is a once in a lifetime catch!

Jess Connelly does not believe in barriers
Photos by Anna Cerezo
When I met Jessica Connelly in an isolated office somewhere in Magallanes, she was the same person I exactly imagined from her Instagram feed. Her hair brushed up, her face contoured but not heavily made up, with just the right shade of rose gold painted on her lips. She was wearing a shirt thrice the normal size for her built, the word ‘dime’ written on it. It was partnered with baggy pants, high-cut pink Converse sneakers, and a Gucci clutch bag with a strap.
It may look distasteful for some, but with Connelly’s face and confidence, the whole ensemble weirdly, just, fits.
The confidence that exudes from Connelly though isn’t like what Nicki Minaj or Demi Lovato surmise. Despite the street wear and the swag, Connelly’s presence is not intimidating. Beyond her social media façade, she’s all-smiles, and quite bubbly, in real life.
“I really don’t feel comfortable wearing what is the norm, you know what I mean? I know people are probably thinking that I’m weird ’cause I like wearing big, baggy pants and big t-shirts and sneakers all the time. That’s what I’m comfortable in and that’s okay. I’m fine with that,” she says.
Growing up, Connelly was not this self-assured and strong-willed. When she was still in high school in Australia, the Fil-Aussie remembers being a loser, that when she left school to be a singer, people in her school were surprised that she actually sings.
More than anything, it has always been Connelly’s goal. There was no Plan B. It was neither just a dream nor a hobby. Looking back, she owes this mentality from her parents, who never, not even once, told her that she couldn’t.
“I think that’s really honestly what it is. I remember my half-brother asked me, probably when I was six, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?,’ I said I want to be a singer. And he said, ‘what if you don’t become a singer, what are you going to be?.’ And I was confused. ‘What do you mean I’m not going to be a singer?’”
Her parents exposed her to music at a young age. Coming from Wollongong, she and her mother would go to Sydney every weekend, an hour drive from where she lives, so she can take singing lessons and know what it’s like to record songs in a music studio. Her mother thinks that the local singing school isn’t good enough for her, even though she thinks that as a child, her voice was horrible.
Growing up, she listened to Britney Spears (until before the pop star shaved her head), Aaliyah, Boyz II Men, 2pac, The Notorious B.I.G, and Nas. She considers Sade as an inspiration. While everyone was listening to Fall Out Boy and using eyeliner, Connelly was vibing with soul, hip-hop and RnB classics.
From Wollongong to Manila
Coming to the Philippines was not really something that Connelly had planned. What seemed to be another annual vacation in Cebu with her family turned out to be a one-way trip.
“I ended up loving it,” she says. “At first I would cry but then I made friends and then I moved to Manila.”
“In Australia, I was not anything like I am now. I think why I love Manila so much, and I know so many people give up on it especially at a time right now, it’s because I definitely grew into the person that I am now from the local music scene that I am in.”
Connelly’s popularity didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it was years in the making. If you search her name on YouTube, random clips from the reality TV show “Pinoy Big Brother” would show a younger her, sporting long, black hair, singing parts of songs like Tamia’s “Officialy Missing You” and Brandon Hines’ “Look Me In My Face.” She was told that it was the only way to make it: become an artista (actress) first before you’ll get the chance to record an album.
But throughout the whole show, snippets of Connelly singing were never aired on television. Instead, after getting evicted in the house, she went on to act small parts in shows like “Angelito: Batang Ama” (2011) and “Paraiso” (2012). It didn’t last before Connelly decided to make her mark in the music scene on her own.
Making people know that she’s a singer and not just another half-breed mestiza trying to make it in showbiz was probably the most frustrating for the 24-year- old.
“I never wanted to be a leading lady. I was very young also when I did that. It’s just not appealing to me. ’Cause I wouldn’t be happy. For what? For people to tell me that I’m pretty? I’m okay. I’d rather people tell me that they love my music,” she quips.
Connelly started as the front woman for the band “Synima.” Three days into joining the band, she did her first gig ever in Route 196 in Katipunan, Quezon City. It was a bad performance. She forgot the lyrics of the song and was too shy to entertain the expectant crowd. She recalled staring at herself in the adjacent mirror from where she stood, doing nothing.
But from there, she has come a long way. After deciding to go solo, Connelly has collaborated with different local producers whom she also considers as friends. Lustbass, crwn, and eyedress among them.
Last year, Connelly released “How I Love,” a four-track EP in collaboration with crwn. When I told her that the project was bitin, she said that was what they’re aiming for: to give the fans enough material not to forget she’s in the game, and to leave them wanting more.
The Connelly-crwn duo started in a Bacolod festival where both of the artists were set to perform, and through mutual friends, the two came up with “Under Blankets.” The song gained Connelly a relatively strong following. It catered to Filipinos who are into low-key, edm-ish soul music, who often search their music in Sound Cloud and YouTube channels like Majestic Casual, Eton Messy, and Regal Bass. Connelly’s music has deftly obscured the line that distinguishes local to international music, which, in her opinion, does not need to exist.
She says, “The masses would benefit so much from being exposed to real music and real artistry and I’m not throwing shade here. [There are many local artists] creating their own content, making their own music, all of that stuff. I see that everyday with my friends and that’s what I’m fighting for.”
Being her own songwriter, manager, promoter, and publicist, her strong opinions that she often air through Twitter, become avenues for non-supporters to hate her. But Connelly knows herself more than anyone — a self-discovery that she owes mainly to the Philippines. “Screenshot this shit,” she tweets at one point. “If you refuse to want to understand and dislike me for petty reasons without knowing me, then stay off my page.”
Smooth, vibey, and chill
Connelly likes creating moods through her music. Imagine a late-night drive at 2 a.m. with your friends, windows rolled down and you are all just smoking. Imagine hanging out by the beach in La Union, the waves kissing the sand over and over and over again. Or imagine drinking at someone’s beach house, with more chilling and less rowdy dancing. It’s with these kinds of vibes that the singer connects her songs.
Her lyrics are nothing deep, but are usually conversational. But it’s Connelly’s sexy and melodic lower register, her Fil-Aussie accent, together with on point productions that put her listeners into a daze. Connelly usually writes her songs at home or on the spot while working with producers. She considers herself her worst enemy, and going through her lyrics over and over again will only make her hate the whole thing. Like any perfectionist, she tends to overanalyze her music.
Luckily for fans, Connelly likes to randomly go back to her tracks that she ended up not liking during the first cut, and maybe, she’ll be releasing some of them. The singer is in the process of creating her next EP to be released some time early next year. This time, with more tracks.
She will also be performing at this year’s Wonderfruit Festival in Pattaya, Thailand, happening this February. Together with producer Lustbass, Connelly will be representing the Philippines and will be performing with an array of musicians from all over the world. The most exciting part? They’ll be performing a “sunset set.” This is going to be her first international gig, and from the looks of it, the first of many.
Before we end the interview, Connelly poses for a few shots with our photographer. She has perfected the smize, and knows when to work her jaw angle. But it’s her smile, the candid ones, that really light up the room. Connelly’s brand of aesthetic — the looks, the slurs, the music, and the vibe — has finally come full circle. After the one-way ticket from Australia, the PBB stint, the bad gigs, and everything in between, Connelly has found her way home.
