forreal tho the whole Point of durarara as a work of art is thhat nobody is wholly good (obviously) OR wholly bad, people are complicated and their relationships with each other and the world are complicated as well

izaya as the closest thing to an antagonist the series has, ALSO serves as mikado's foil- he's the bad end to mikado's story, explicitly becoming that way because he had no true friends- shinra only cared about celty and his parents were never around and thats kind of all he had. he was a young boy with clear mental problems, to the point where his father instilled that people love into him in order to prevent a worse outcome and help him be more normal. the way this is framed, as a young boy exhibiting a concerning disconnect from other people to a point where it scares a usually neglectful father into acting- is very reminiscent of media depictions (and real life examples) of parents worrying that their child is a sociopath. this could very well have been intentional, and narita EXPLICITLY makes a POINT to state that izaya is the way that he is because he has a fragile heart- any sort of genuine effection and a betrayal of it could shatter him. i really dont think the takeaway here was "lolllll hes suchhh a loser" OR "omggg hes so scary hes iredeemable." it's another piece of the central theme that humans are nuanced and messy and conplicated and oftentimes in very unglamorous ways that make them unsympathetic to most people. durarara AS A SHOW is about shining a light onto these people and inviting the viewer to sympathize with them, and if someone doesnt get that and is just disgusted by most of the characters then durarara is not the show for them

also vis a vis izaya and mikado being foils- the reason mikado got a happy ending was because of his friends- because of the connections he has with other people. izaya did not have those connections, hence his own instability drove him farther and farther down into a death spiral that culminated in his CRIPPLING, a major loss of freedom from someone who valued it so much, and i'm saying that as a disabled person

I feel like Avery has a natural beef with Robin due to the nature of PC's relationship with them.

Avery finding PC cute, finding them endearing with how they act during parties, dinners, or dates. Adoring with how willing PC flaunts their body for Avery to take. A beautiful and perfect doll for them to spoil.

Then, upon encountering PC walking with this kid they don't know, the doll they know suddenly feels so human. How softly they hold Robin's hand and how natural their laughter looked. How PC's gaze immediately softens when looking at Robin. How naturally Robin goes to hug PC when they meet in front of the school, showing no discomfort to the act.

Realizing how PC was putting up an act for Avery, everything down to the detail of their appearance in order to get the money Avery treats them. PC is not some "whore" Avery paid for, however, somehow, the relationship feels more artificial than hiring some random whore from the brothel.

Their first act is denial, denial about the reality of their relationship with PC. And so they begin treating PC outside of weekends, flaunting their wealth in front of the student body.

But PC would start denying them, choosing that orphan to walk with instead of a ride with Avery. The soft gaze they cast on Robin becoming more loving. How PC and Robin looked like the world didn't exist around them when they are together.

Robin has nothing—a mere orphan who PC pays for, Avery has everything—they can grant PC a luxurious life, and yet, when it came to PC's affections, Robin has everything, and Avery has nothing.

A Taste of Gold and Iron is so funny because Evemer goes from thinking that everything Kadou does and says and looks like is a sign of his weak character and immorality and flightiness while Evemer literally grows in rage with every little interaction.

And then by the end of the book Kadou is mounting his horse with “breathtaking grace”, filling Evermer with pride with every tiny action, and making Evermer want to fall to his knees and press Kadou’s hands to his forehead in worship of his Lord.

I was working on my commission rates post when I realized I'm in desperate need to update my portfolio. Oeps. While I have a lot of fully rendered stuff, my simpler drawings and sketches are all over the place style-wise so I need to get consistent with that. This piece is more or less how I'm gonna handle sketch commissions (if I ever get any).

Fandom-wise I'm completely OOTL so I don't know what's going on here lol. I've watched Ahsoka, TBB too, I dropped Acolyte after episode 2 because I was busy but I don't feel like returning to it yet 😅 Also House of The Dragon and KDramas have completely possessed me. I kinda want to draw HOTD and Game of Thrones fanart too.

I'm trying my best to finish my commission info as soon as possible but I kinda got stuck doing 10 different things at once because I'm desperate to earn some money. I'm broke.
