A former opera singer and actress, she was featured in the short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”, published in July 1891. Adler is one of the most notable female characters in the Sherlock Holmes series, despite appearing in only one story. While not technically a criminal and bearing no malice towards Holmes, she outsmarts him and evades his traps. Sherlock Holmes refers to her afterwards respectfully as “the Woman”.

Thinking about Evelyn kind of blamed herself for not warning Ruby about the type of man Don was even though it wasn't her fault.

Part 1: Transmigration Gone Wrong
Tumblr media
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Evelyn barely dodged the spear directed at her ribs as she shakily blocked the sword aiming for her neck. She quickly distanced herself from her attackers to catch her breath. The sounds of colliding swords and clanging armor echoed in the background as Evelyn and the three masked figures drew to a standstill. She braced herself for another barrage of attacks as she raised her sword in front of her.
The red figure threw a dagger at her head, prompting her to sidestep the projectile. The other two figures immediately resumed their attacks, and Evelyn retaliated. The following moments felt like a blur as she exchanged blows with her attackers, slashing and parrying. The exhaustion slowly caught up to her.
Though she managed to incapacitate the figure wearing red and the one wielding a spear, the figure with a sword knocked her off balance not long after, sending her sprawling on the ground while her sword fell beside her. Evelyn tried reaching for her weapon but was kicked on the side before she could do so. She let out a grunt of pain as she rolled onto her back, clutching her side as she blearily looked up at the figure holding their sword over her chest.
Evelyn clenched her eyes shut as she awaited the final blow.
Instead, she heard a scream of pain and felt a splash of something warm on her face, the smell of iron filling the air.
Her eyes snapped open as she was hauled up by her arm and stumbled as she tried to balance herself on her feet. She stared as the puddle of blood under her assailant's corpse grew. It was only then that Evelyn realized that the now cool liquid on her face was the attacker's blood. She quickly brought her sleeve up to her face to wipe off the slightly dried blood.
"You alright, Eve?"
Evelyn turned her head and was greeted by the sight of Cassandra holding her spear in her hand. If Evelyn thought she was drenched in blood, then Cassandra was practically soaked in it – though she was pretty sure none of the blood was hers. Cassandra was the skilled one between them, so she wasn't that concerned.
"I'm alright. Thanks for the save, by the way." Evelyn crouched down to retrieve her sword, lying in her assailant's blood. She grimaced as she lightly shook the blood off its blade before returning it to its sheath attached to her hip.
Cassandra scowled as she distanced herself from the corpses of their attackers, prompting Evelyn to follow her out of the alley.
"Tsk, we're training when we get back to the barracks. You clearly need more training if those low lives managed to disarm you. Let's head back."
Evelyn grimaced as she recalled how easily she went down during the ambush. Though her skills had improved drastically ever since she woke up in this era, she wasn't nearly strong enough to put up a good fight. Maybe she could enhance her strength by lifting heavier loads? The ones she typically used were heavy, but she wasn't struggling with them as much as she did when she started the routine. Sparring with Alexander more often might help increase her speed, given how fast he was.
Lost in her own thoughts, Evelyn failed to notice the concerned look Cassandra was giving her. Cassandra's concern only increased when Evelyn nearly walked into a nearby tree if it weren't for her redirecting Evelyn away from it.
The Cerise Knight only sighed as she tried to catch her friend's attention.
"Oi, Evelyn, snap out of it. If you come close to another tree, I'm not stopping you from walking into it this time."
Evelyn jolted as she was pulled away from her thoughts. Her eyes narrowed as she turned to look at her assigned partner. "Well then, do you have any suggestions that might help me improve my skills? This era isn't exactly one I'm used to, Cass. I'm usually assigned to deal with cybernetic revolts and palace intrigue, not medieval skirmishes."
"Running laps around the training area and going through your sword forms might make them less atrocious. We've been in this era for half a year, and I'm still repulsed by your forms."
Evelyn scowled as she slapped her friend's arm and scowled harder when her hand stung from the action.
"I'm 80% sure the higher-ups want me dead; this is the fifth time I've been sent to the wrong era. AND BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING - they couldn't have gotten me mixed up with another traveler because I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in my damn résumé that I only worked with futuristic periods and palace intrigue."
Cassandra's eyes furrowed as she gave what her friend said some thought. Her eyes widened when she remembered that their fellow travelers had similar complaints in the past, albeit less dramatic.
Evelyn could only yelp as she was suddenly grabbed by her shoulders and turned to face her friend. "I think I know what's wrong with you, Evelyn."
Evelyn frowned in confusion as she carefully removed Cassandra's hands from her shoulders as if she was wary of suddenly being attacked.
"...That's great, I guess? I already knew I was dropped as a baby, but okay-"
Cassandra rolled her eyes, and Evelyn barely suppressed an offended (fake) gasp. "That's not what I meant, you idiot. I'm trying to say that I think I know why you've been sent to eras not listed in your résumé."
Evelyn visibly perked up and smiled. "Well, why didn't you start with that, Cass?"
Cassandra wanted to facepalm but didn't because she was more sophisticated than that. "About 10 years ago, Xavier told me he was sent to the 18th century-"
Evelyn's jaw dropped. "Doesn't he usually deal with the 20th century and Elizabethan era, though?! He's one of the agency's best travelers; shouldn't the higher-ups have been more careful with his missions?"
A hand quickly plastered itself onto Evelyn's mouth, and her eye twitched in irritation.
"I was getting to that. Just let me finish talking, Eve." Cassandra lowered her hand from the other girl's mouth and continued her narration.
"Now, Xavier wasn't the only one who the higher-ups nearly screwed over; the same thing happened to Lilith a few months after-" Cassandra paused for dramatic effect.
"She was sent to The Three Kingdoms Period."
"Holy shit-" Evelyn wanted to find Lilith and give her a hug.
Lilith was well known in the agency for her ruthless work style and perfect record. Every mission assigned to her was completed with the best possible outcome; the only exceptions were the three missions she received in quick succession 10 years ago. If she was ruthless before those missions, her work-style was even more ominous nowadays.
Cassandra placed her hand on Evelyn's shoulder. "Those two were sent to missions where the chances of succeeding were close to zero, and it was because they weren't used to the settings they were in. They were both at their 20-year marks of service when they first got those types of missions, at least that's what they told me."
Evelyn frowned for a split-second before she gasped in realization. "Both of them had drastic improvements to their work ethic after that, didn't they? I reached my 20-year mark five months ago, and that's when I first got assigned to settings I wasn't used to..."
Evelyn started pacing as she tried to articulate her thoughts; Cassandra rubbed her temples as a headache started to form.
Evelyn didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
"Is this the agency's way of helping us expand our areas of expertise?! Cassy, I nearly died several times while on those missions, and I was with at least one or two travelers who specialized in those settings at that rate!" She paced faster as her thoughts continued rampaging in her head.
Cassandra wanted a drink; she was decidedly not drunk enough to deal with this. She groaned as she held her head in her hands. "That means I'll have to deal with something like that in six months..."
"I swear on my honor and dignity-"
"There's not much of that left, Eve..." Cassandra mumbled tiredly as she continued to massage her temples.
Evelyn ignored her friend's jab and continued, "-that if you end up in a setting, I'm stationed at in the future, I'll help you in anyway I can."
"Thanks, Eve..."
Evelyn stopped pacing and strode towards her friend, quickly grabbing her by the shoulders and lowering her to see her eye-to-eye. "For now, can you please help me while I'm here? The Medieval Ages and the 17th century were the periods listed in your résumé, weren't they?" A near manic look was on Evelyn's face as she spoke.
Cassandra let out a sigh as she shrugged off Evelyn's hands. "Aren't I already doing that? Come on, we need to get back to the barracks so I can help improve your pathetic fighting skills."
Evelyn spluttered in indignation as she tried to keep up with the other girl, who was by now pointedly ignoring her presence.
"Excuse me?! I am VERY adept at using polarized plasma rifles and barbed whips, mind you!"
Safe to say, it was a long journey back to the barracks.
