oh how i love this quick little scene where buck bumps into tommy during the basketball game. it's just SO endearing to me – buck being caught off guard because he did NOT expect tommy to be in that spot, and then just staring at him in that silly little pose while tommy tilts his head at buck... GOD, can they get any cuter?

It’s the way that Buck’s view on Tommy was so so so similar to Buck’s initial view of Eddie. Man doesn’t know how to deal with his attraction so he runs in the opposite direction and “hates” them (but can’t stop talking about them) until things finally blow up (injured Eddie —> kiss Tommy) or don’t (you can have my back any day)

Buck left his muddy sneakers at Eddie’s house. Eddie is sitting on the back of an ambulance watching a gurney roll away, watching vaguely familiar faces trying to keep it together for him, watching his hands shake.  A voice somewhere says, “He’s in shock.” Another bites back, “Wouldn’t you be?” And none of it matters, because Buck left his muddy sneakers at Eddie’s house. * The first twenty-four hours are the hardest.

when i tell you i imprinted on the feeling i got from reading this MASTERPIECE. i haven't looked BACK baby. k knows what she's DOING. this is like one of the first 3 fics i EVER read for the 911 fandom. before this, i was a casual viewer of the show. i was the general audience going haha sexy firefighters i should keep watching a la february 2021 can you believe?????????

Taking a deep breath, Eddie forced himself to walk. One foot in front of the other, taking the path that he knew by heart, a path he wished he had never had to walk. Finally he found what he was looking for. Eddie had meant to stay standing but the second his eyes settled on Buck’s named carved into the stone he fell to his knees, the weight of his grief, of his pain making him fall. Evan knew how to do his own basic car maintenance, of course, he loved to know things and be self-reliant, but he also liked Tommy to show him things. So he did his regular checks with Evan pressed up against his side, watching closely. They deemed it to be in good shape, then he pointed toward the bucket and pile of sponges and cloths he’d set off to the side.

“And now, for the fun part,” he announced grandly.

“Y’know, if you wanted to get me wet, all you had to do was ask,” Evan teased him.

Summary:

“What?” He finally gives her the response she wants.

“Look, I’m glad you’re my friend and I love you,” she starts.

“Thanks,” he says, truly meaning it, though he’s sure this conversation isn’t going to turn out the way he wants to.

“But if you’re toying with my brother’s emotions, that’s it. Friendship over.”

Eddie wants to say he’s not sure how he got in this position, but he knows all too well the sequence of events that lead him here. It started with a party on an all too sunny day in his friend’s backyard, with Maddie squealing when she saw him and holding him tight. He never makes it out to any of the events she invites him to.

“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.” He smiled back at her and shrugged his shoulders. It was understandable that she would think that. Maddie’s the first friend he made at work and they’re close enough for her to know that Christopher is the reason he doesn’t come out to events that often. He wants to spend time with his son uninterrupted. Working shifts at the hospital that are long enough to where he gets home when Chris is leaving, or Chris is sleeping, or he’s not even there, motivated him to stay at home when he could. Eddie could tell that Maddie was beginning to question their friendship a bit, stating that all she knew about him was that he had a kid.

He knew he could be a bit reserved when he wanted to, but he considered Maddie a real friend and wanted to make sure she knew that he valued their friendship outside of work as well. “Come! Meet my brother and my boyfriend!” He was led around with a tug on his wrist to some lawn chairs where a long-legged man with blue eyes and dark blonde hair and a nice beard squinted and rested his hand on his forehead to block the sun from getting in his eye. Chimney, Maddie’s husband, was there as well. Chimney was holding Jee-Yun, the photos did depict how adorable she was, but her cheeks looked even more squishable in person. He waved at her, shaking her tiny palm, and greeted her father with a handshake as well.

He could feel eyes at the side of his head, and turned to say, “I’m Eddie.” He’s reluctant to say it felt like the type of meet-cute described in books and shown in movies, but the way his breath hitched as the man said,

“I’m Buck,” with a smile that made his stomach flutter felt like an exact replica of any rom-com he’s ever watched after being “forced” to do so by his sisters. He returned the smile, head tucked towards his chest, and took a seat next to him.

OKAY I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING

I keep watching the scene where Eddie, Ana and Christopher are eating breakfast together. And the fact that Eddie says to Ana, ‘Maybe you should go home first’ just makes me think of a moment where Buck is getting ready to leave Eddie’s apartment after hanging around for dinner. He helps Eddie clean away the plates and puts Christopher to bed before getting ready to head out the door. But suddenly he feels a familiar touch on his shoulder, gently but firm. He turns around to see Eddie, his head low and his lips twisted as if his contemplating on what to say.

“Stay,” Eddie says, finally. His voice almost a mere whisper. He combs his anxious fingers through his hair before looking up at Buck. “Please.”  There was a surety in his words this time, he knew what he wanted and hoped that Buck would want the same. 

However, when Buck did not say a word, Eddie couldn’t help but think that perhaps he had said something he should not have. But then he noticed a smile appear across Buck’s lips and watched as he shut the agape door swiftly closed before turning back to face him.

“Okay, but only since you asked nicely.”  Buck teased. 

Eddie scoffed and soon they both began to chuckle, removing any sense of awkwardness from the room.

okay but how many nights did they spend sat next to each other in bed on facetime to christopher 😭

oh i'm so soft 😭 they try and facetime chris every night they're not working and even sometimes when they are on shift they call from the station anyway when it's a slow night.

it's really hard the first couple of weeks, chris is upset that he can't see his dad and eddie can't stand being away from him. buck lets them talk alone for most of the call and jumps in towards the end to try and lighten the mood and say goodnight. during the first week, after the call one night, eddie sets aside the tablet and turns away from buck so that the other man can't see how close he is to falling apart. buck is having none of it, he gently lays a hand on eddie's shoulder and says, 'hey. you don't have to hide from me.' eddie turns, gives him a little nod and then just kind of collapses against buck's side, doesn't quite cry, but just lets buck take some of the weight of his sadness.

it gets easier after that and buck becomes more involved in the calls, which become longer and longer and after a while, they both sit in bed together under the covers, taking turns to read chris his bedtime story each night. sometimes, when eddie is tired, he allows himself to fall asleep to the sound of buck's voice, his head pillowed on his shoulder. buck is so happy that he can hardly stand it, but he never says anything, just allows eddie to lay there, basking in his warmth. he misses it more than words can express when eddie finally goes back to his house. and eddie misses it too, thinks more than once about asking buck to just move in.

(the apartment isn't exactly a private place, but hen and chim tactfully pretend they can't hear the hushed pillow talk and the face time calls, for some semblance of privacy. but both of them wonder just how long it's gonna take their friends to get their heads out of their asses and realize they're already a family)
