Currently consuming: a cab sauv i picked up specifically because it was $6.99 and had a cute name. the reigning theory that my wine crimes are due to me not actually liking wine. has some weight

I do not know a lot about film theory and such like, but I've noticed while watching young royals that they do have kinda a yellow and blue theme going on. I first noticed it in the outfits

this, for example, or the "I dont want to be anybody's secret scene". I cant find a picture, but I remember Wille wearing (again) all blue and Simon wearing a blue/yellow checked shirt (if I remember right)

I also noticed how it's in the lighting (especially important scenes).

just a couple of examples.

also the first time they sleep together. when Aufust films it, the light is cold and bluish, the scene when they wake up after and make out it's warm and yellow(ish).

first I thought it was like a nod towards the swedish flag (and maybe it is, as ridiculous as it sounds?) - I mean Red White and Royal blue is literally called like the colours of the British and the american flag, sooo....

I also considered it to be just for the atmosphere tbh. idk

but then I rewatched Skam (S3) - the OG - and I noticed the same thing.

it's not that much/or obvious in the outfits, but in the composition and mainly in the lighting, most times its really subtle, but then there are scenes like the party or the underwater kiss that are very blue and then the reunion for example that is warm and yellowish again.

idk if it's just a thing with lighting that's pretty common to set the scene or if it has some deeper meaning and/or symbolism.

but I just thought it was an interesting parallel, and it might have played subconsciously a role why YR reminded me so much of Skam...

Timeline/Pacing Concerns

I haven’t been sharing the same timeline/pacing/storyline concerns I’ve seen a lot of >>previous post about same topic here<< since I think David and Matteo parted on good terms on Saturday to give Matteo time before reaching back out to David (and was reaffirmed via text on Wednesday).

To help alleviate some of the fandom angst, it helps to compare the scenes/pacing in OG episode 9 (which seems the best comparison at the moment) and Druck’s current episode 8.

OG:

Friday: Even’s breakdown, Sonja tells Isak to leave him alone

Sunday: Isak googling, asks Even to stop contacting him (and Isak’s mom says she’ll always love him after he came out via text on Friday)

Tuesday: Isak tells boys about Even’s MI, peptalk from Magnus

Wednesday: Pacing, unsure if should contact Even and eventually gets voicemail, talks with father about going to mass with mother and comes out

Friday: Even sends (goodbye?) text to Isak telling him he loves him, Isak realizes Even may be in a bad place and runs to him, cue most beautiful epic scene gifted ever

Druck:

Saturday: David comes out, Matteo says he doesn’t know what to say and David gives him space and to let him know if or when he’s ready to talk

Monday: Matteo googling, phone call from mother but scene cut off 

NOTE: same two day difference as OG

Tuesday: Ping-pong with boys, grill him about David after they left Friday, Matteo is elusive and Jonas asks if everything’s okay, Matteo says he’ll tell him later

Wednesday (clip only): Cue lube-gate origins lol 

Guru Hans is an angel, about to teach Matteo the birds and the bees before Matteo tells him about David

Hans teaches Matteo that outing is wrong and violates the person’s choice to share/protect their sexuality/gender/etc orientation

Matteo’s confused about where he fits/what his attraction to David means 

Similar to how he’s spent majority of the season struggling to find his place to belong somewhere since he doesn’t belong with his family, or his friends, or with the ignorant “flamboyantly gay” stereotype he applied to gays in general (and Hans…but boy he was properly schooled and Hans later stepped up to help Matteo along the way)

Hans asks him what he likes about David (and Matteo gushes) and says that’s the only thing that really matters and everything else is secondary

Wednesday (text): Matteo asks David if it’s okay if he needs more time and that he doesn’t want him to think he’s bailed on him, David thanks him and says to take all the time he needs

As you can see pacing is pretty on point with OG with only big difference is Druck breaking up Isak telling the boys about Even’s MI on Tuesday to two scenes: 1 - boys ping-pong with no substance (which worried a lot of ppl, but it was def intended to be filler teasing Hanna + Jonas and Abdi + Sam storylines) but IMPORTANTLY did not out David and 2- Hans guru session (which filled Magnus’ reassuring role)

Another part that is different is that Matteo hasn’t had any contact with his family (outside of mother’s recurring religious themed texts) so the coming out to his mother and father storyline hasn’t started whereas Isak had already told both and they responded positively.  This is where the added time of week 9 for OG vs week 8 for Druck stands out and where Matteo still has a long way to go.  They may plop in the coming out text Isak sent to his mother at the end of ep 8 in Druck’s version (also in ep 8) this week.

Yet another theory

I've seen many people suggest Matteo is going to have some mental illness because there are many indicators that the Even and Isak roles are switched around in a way. I don't think completely but at least partially.

Matteo seems to be really miserable and I don't think that comes only from hiding that he is gay. I think he might be seriously depressed or something like that.

I think David is going to be the one who figures it out and encourages him to see a therapist/get professional help because David has struggled with mental health issues too before figuring out who he was/coming out/transitioning so he knows what it is like and how to get help.

Hell week in Druck

I’ve been thinking how Druck will handle that aweful comment of Isak, and Even distancing himself. As we know: Druck does everything their own way, so based on some other theories, I made my own theory how this will turn out.

Matteo is showing symptoms of depression. We don’t know whether he actually is depressed but the possibility is certainly there. So what if he says he doesn’t want to have “crazy” surrounding him not because of insensitivity but because of self-care. It can be very dangerous to be close to other people who suffer from mental illness if you struggle yourself. You can pull eachother down on an endless downward spiral. This doesn’t need to happen of course, but there’s the risk. And that is what Matteo tries to protect himself from. But Matteo isn’t the master of communication so he probably won’t explain his reasons for that comment right away. And this is where David’s interpretation of that comment comes in.

David might be Trans. So if this really is the case, maybe he thinks Trans people are “crazy” people to Metteo. Therefore, Matteo doesn’t want to have him around. Of course that’s not what Matteo means, but communication is still hard for those two, so the possibility is big they won’t be able to resolve that misunderstanding soon.

This theory would provide a way better base for a healthy relationship. Isak/Matteo doesn’t have to go through a change of his mindset and wasn’t insensitive. In this case it is all based on miscommunication and misinformation which can happen quite easily at the beginning of a relationship.

grindr in skam and other things

so someone pointed out in another post(here is an updated version i think of that post, it’s really clever too) that they think Martino’s season is gonna focus more on external homophobia and struggles, while Isak’s season focused on his internal struggles and internalized homophobia - which I think would make sense in the Italian context, bc Italy is famously homophobic. 

These shots below really capture and exemplifies that shift in narrative. 

That they physically arranged the characters so that in Isaks case he is in between Emma and Even, to show that he is stuck in an internal battle between what he wants and what he thinks society wants from him

and in Martinos case, Emma is placed between Niccoló and Martino to show that something external is keeping them apart.

So I wanted to add on, 1) that I think that that point is also exemplified via the very firsts clips opening montage/shot. Where they broadcast stories of young gay people being mistreated by other people showing us that there are present outside forces, and additionally giving us some background info on what it’s like being LGBT in Italy. 

 and 2) I just wanted to pipe in with something from yesterdays clip that I haven’t really seen talked about, Martino downloading Grindr. 

I found it interesting that there is such a difference between the two portrayals of Grindr in skam Italia and the OG skam.

 Isak downloads Grindr to find Even but it instead gets him a bunch of really sexual messages, which overwhelms him and causes him to pull back.

 This is used to show that while he is edging closer to self-realization, he really just wants Even, and is maybe willing to realize his feelings for Even, but he isn’t ready to do “everything else” he isn’t ready to come out, or to be gay - the part all the sexts represents, because a nasty ( but very present) stereotype is that gay men are inherently sexual and/or predatory - and he feels disconnected from that. 

Martino’s version wasn’t as meaningful as isaks, but thats okay, it still tells us something. 

In this version, we are introduced to Grindr as a pretty, dare i say it, lame place. It’s not violently sexual, it’s actually pretty casual. There are a couple of shirtless pics but it’s not a lot, and it definitely has a more calm vibe.  This is showing us that some of Martino’s early experiences with the gay community are positive (also counting his convo with Filippo)

Martino is being told that gay men actually are just normal dudes, and that hopefully helps to not create that disconnect from the ‘identity gay’ which was a present theme in the og season 3. 

And then the finishing touch is him being interrupted by another person and quickly closing down the app. To show us that he is scared of being found out by other people and that the conflict comes from the outside = there is an external conflict.

SKAM Remakes

So I don’t know why this is just occuring to me, it might have been said already but it might help those who aren’t keen on all the remakes.

Every remake is just a parallel universe.

From Isak and Even’s POV, it answers so many questions.

Would we be together if we were in a different country? Would we still meet? How would the culture affect us? What about our friends? And of course, what if the curtains were yellow? grey? green?

If the producers were clever, there would be details that are small but different that would mean the world to the fans.

For example, Isak’s character would be up at night watching Moulin Rouge rather than Romeo and Juliet in Austin, when he would be thankful to go to Paris, Texas nevermind Paris, France because of his home situation.

Or in Berlin, Even is discussing with the British hotel receptionist how much he loves British film and bragging about how gorgeous his boyfriend is.

Or in Amsterdam, Even would have a nightmare making cheese on toast, he left the edam out and it’s gone all hard. But they’d still have all the herbs and spices and laugh over how bad it tastes because it’s Isak and Even and even in a parallel universe, they’d be together somehow.

…I’m probably going to write a fanfic about this soon.

I think the story behind the Even casting was that he was meant to be a brown Muslim boy but Henrik was the best. So instead of 'he read the Quran while manic to cure himself' it probably would have just been 'He was Muslim and manic'. It kinda sucks that they didn't stick with casting a brown boy but I hope they do it for SKAM Austin! Or another POC.

Do you know that moment? When your craved ship becomes canon? And you're waiting for the next season to see if you get more sweet sweet content of them? That fear of not being 100% sure of whether you're going to see them kiss again or not? Constantly checking the twitter accounts of the show makers to hear LEGIT any news about them? Bitch me too

I just…why is Ismail always so cagey and vague about their feelings for Lou? Why are they incapable of simply stating outright how they feel, either to Lou’s face or to somebody who asks? They have been asked several times by several people and not one time have they given a truly straightforward answer. 

Sascha asks, and Isi’s response is “yeah, I guess?” and then they go on to say they like that she’s straightforward. (Take lessons, Ismail!) Fatou asks, and the response is “I don’t know” then mentions they just like hanging out with her. Zoe and Kieu My ask how things are with Lou, and Ismail said it’s weird with her and Constantin. They ask if Isi is jealous and they say “not really”. Then to Constantin they say “maybe I like her too”. Why the maybe? Why are they not sure yet? On top of that, they always appear uncomfortable when asked. Yet look at the two times that they are praised for a possible relationship with Lou (by Zoe and Nora). Them saying how “cool” Lou is. Isi looks happy and kinda revel in the praise (don’t even get me started on some of the possible theories for that whole thing). 

Now contrast that to what we see with Constantin. He has been straightforward from day one and we have known that he is into Lou from the moment he met her. Ismail is also aware of this. Again, don’t get me started on some of these implications. Constantin has never been anything but upfront with his feelings for Lou. He likes her. End of. 

At this point in other seasons, we had evaks, spiderwitz, kieutou, noorhelms already in love, kissing, etc. But we can’t even get a straightforward answer from Ismail if they even like Lou? And why wouldn’t they know themselves by now?
