In a sea of holos, Eight squinted up at the sky. Her eyes needed a break from the constant techno flashes which had practically already blinded her. It was a miracle anyone had their eyesight left at all as the city was a great luminescent pile of holographic lights that flashed eternally.
A small chirp irritably alerted her eyes back down to her reality.
 How she hated robots.
“Look, get me to the East gate, or I swear to you I will not hesitate to rip out your wirings.”
The android merely blinked in short comprehension.
“I am afraid I cannot allow you the necessary clearance to leave, Eva Eight, Sanctuary 573, identification number 056101. You are not permitted through these gates because you do not have a cleared card. In this case you have one too many unresolved holds that interfere with your registration to one of our New Attican airships.”
Eight pressed her lips together hard, certain they had turned a blue that matched her hair to the hue.
“And what ‘unresolved holds’ are those, you lanky piece of cheap scrap metal?”
The droid's fans whirred, processing the insult no doubt.
“Your Sanctuary-born status disallows your departure and contains limited authorizations-”
With an electric snap, Eight watched the android’s eyes go dark as she tore out its metal plate with a crackling snap. The assemblage of multi-colored wires spewing from the exposed compartment mimicked that of spilled guts.
The lifeless body fell to the ground with a small thud and Eight scoffed, still holding its protective metal plating in her right hand.
“I wasn’t joking.”
Eight tossed the plate onto the ground, shaking her head at her unfortunate misfortune. She knew she wouldn’t have gotten anywhere, even if she were allowed on those fancy airships that were so elaborately made they didn’t even look aerodynamic anymore. The ships were a magnificent feat of ornamentation- the engineering was another story. They only took passengers to the outskirts of the city, and from there, there were absolutely no chances of making a getaway. As long as she was a proclaimed New Attican citizen, she was trapped.

Spoiler Warning For the Wondla Books
...Ok, so are we not going to talk about how Eva Eight dated Hailey's dad (Evan Seven)? Are we going to gloss over that? And that he didn't abandon her, he got eaten by sand-snipers? And Eva Nine and Hailey were almost adopted siblings?

WondLa really had Eva's life long goal of finding other people like her turn into hey actually my real friends are a coyote boy with an airship and an alien with a backpack and all you people are mean
and Then WondLa went hey you have an older sister who technically had the life you thought of as perfection and she got what you never had because of Bastille but Then Eva 8 goes yeah sorry but my childhood sucked ass and I wasn't allowed to do anything until I was 18 and got sterilized!? and so I resent our robot mom forever because of that.
They really said- the tragedy you went through brought you freedom. Community cannot be manufactured.
that was such a madlad move to put in a middle grade trilogy

ok i've watched the first three episodes of the apple WondLa show. Here's my thoughts (minor spoilers ahead)
my biggest take away is that, despite aging Eva up to 16, the tone is much lighter than the original. I do love the montage of her growing up with Muther, I really do, but starting with that instead of "Eva Nine was dying, waiting for her body to shut down from snake bite" (even if the latter was just a simulation) just sets such a different vibe.
Besteel's still scary, that's good, but we don't see him butchering Otto's herdmember right in front of everyone; Rovee's knife cuts through ropes like they're cobwebs instead of having to saw through; we first see a baby sandsniper in distress instead of a mother looming ominously in the distance; ep 3 invents a whole silly character and a rather bland "gamble so we can get money" subplot. There's no blood, no cuts or rope burns or anything. The landscapes are still beautifully alien, but there's something a little more pastel and whimsical about them.
the animation style, particularly of the landscape, Eva and Muther, has something just a bit...plastic-y about it. I don't really understand why Eva and Muther's redesigns are so drastic, though I can imagine some bits and pieces of them that might be hard to animate I suppose?
and otto...my boy otto what did they do to you??? he is not supposed to be the comic relief animal sidekick guys, this is not my otto!
I'm not saying the show is bad, though.
Rovee was always my favorite character and they've really nailed him, both in design and in vibes. Seeing Hostia's family was wonderful (though I haven't see the migration mural yet, which is kinda important...?) and Muther, despite the redesign, talks and acts and reasons like Muther does. They're hammering home the themes of family really well, especially with Muther's thing about not being human.
Introducing Cadmus earlier is a change that I think has a lot of potential, and I don't have a problem with hinting towards Eight leaving the WondLa for Eva. Did I see Hailey's name in the Sanctuary hub? I admire how closely they're sticking to the plot and the slow pace with the episodes directly being adaptations of chapters. Also, why do they keep saying Eva's name like that??

A Hero For WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi
[Goodreads]
Sequel to the previous book in the series, The Search for WondLa, and pretty much the entire plot of this is huge spoilers for the last one.
In this book, Eva Nine travels to the hidden human city of New Atticus, hoping to find her true home once and for all, but discovers instead that New Atticus is something of a gilded cage. The immortal ruler of New Atticus keeps the truth about the outside world from its inhabitants, who are biased against the few humans who live outside the city, content to wallow in shallow pleasures and ignore the strict curfews and how absolutely everybody is kept careful track of. Things are further complicated by spoilers:
The presence of Eva Eight, Eva Nine’s long lost older sister who, while she has been waiting for her sister for years and years and instantly loves her the moment they meet, is hurt and bitter over her own past and generally has a bunch of psychological issues.
Alongside her sister, Eva Nine discovers that the ruler of New Atticus has a plan to invade the rest of Orbona in order to gain control over a hidden terraforming device, and is being assisted by an evil seer with a monstrous plan of his own.
Generally enjoyable. Found the False Utopia setting most of the story is set in to be less compelling than the roadtrip-through-alien-environment of the previous book, but it builds well upon what the previous book established.

I benefit so much from media showcasing the reality of sisterhood. Which is why I believe that my love for Eva Nine and Eva Eight is so strong. They represent the transition of growing up in similar circumstances but dealing with them differently. They represent using the breaking down of childhood and choosing to create their adulthood from the ground up because of their past. They represent navigating a changing sister relationship through those transforming adult desires and wishes. And that’s where the divergence come in.
There is so much you have to let go of when you become your own person, and that includes relationships. Sometimes diverging paths lead to a different type of bond, and that is so hard to go through when you realize that you are no longer good for each other, at least in the forms you used to be. I think that everyone who experiences sisterhood (through blood or through close friendships) deals with this in one way or another, and that is why seeing this type of thing represented in media is so important. Learning how to cope with the person you thought you had everything in common with metamorphosize into someone who doesn’t need you to play the role you always have in their life is soul crushing but somehow so beautiful.

Eva Eight sketches from a while ago. Not particularly good or bad- just practice. Trying to master her in my “style” and drew her in varying ages. Still hate her hair.

I am aware that many people think about Eight differently, but she is baby. I can’t get over her. Everything about her character is lovely.
Eight is hostile, and bitter, and even better, she is a vulnerable piece of work. She is maternal and protective but also harsh, brash, impulsive- imposing. Even with all those defining ‘vices’ she is still a character who we can support and learn to empathize with.
It’s a slow progression as we learn more about her and the versatility is so good.
Many times when readers see a character with more downscaling characteristics, they are quick to dismiss their duality and simply jump to the over thought conclusion that they are ‘less than’ their identified morals/ the identified morals of their world, and I have noticed that kind of conversation happening with Eight. She did the things she did because she was directly affected by her world- not the other way around.
And most importantly, Eight is a direct contrasting and paralleling figure of Eva Nine. She is the antihetos. Eight is the woman Eva Nine would have become if her circumstances played out differently. Eight is the kind of version of a person Eva would be destined to grow up to be- but for Eva, she chose a different path and that is where their stories diverge. Eva chose, Eight accepted. And we are shown that deviation of Eva through Eight.
The conflict of Eight is a vital part of Eva’s becoming and many toss that away from their analytical lense of thought when talking about her.
Anyway, my girl deserves better. Because the one thing I hate most is that she is either never brought up or she is extremely misunderstood by fans.

Eva Eight, part one
She hates forests
Based on this

Hi! For the WondLa questions, do you think Eva Nine ever returns to the Heart of the Forest to see Eight and tell her how she ended the war? Maybe Eva even makes the visits a regular thing, seeing her sister at least once a year and checking on the Vitae Virus generator? I also wonder if Eight becomes even more tree-like over time and loses her remaining human features. Eva Nine could still communicate with her with her powers of course though. Sorry if that’s kind of a sad one I just think their relationship is really interesting.
Best wishes for college, rooming alone sounds hard please take care 💛
Don’t apologize at all, Nine and Eight’s relationship is a good one… albeit sad. I have thought of this so much to the point where I cry inside, because the way I see it, yes, Eight would become more tree-like as time goes on. I think her ability to have those human features and characteristics would be taken away because she simply wouldn’t need them anymore - the forest knows that Eight’s nature is changed, and with that comes her loss of the last few remaining features that connect her to the human world. That ‘taking away’ could be seen as a negative thing, but I view it as her final form, which is completely and utterly one with the earth in every sense. I still think Eva would check on her sister regularly, and they would have many pleasant conversations, with Eva telling her of newfound peace and newfound friendships. Honestly, I feel their connection would be even stronger than it was before Eight’s transformation. It’s actually very beautiful 💚
I also see an elderly Eva still going to the Vitae Virus generator and becoming a sort of protector and overseer of it, which allows her to visit her sister often.
Thank you for the questions and the best wishes ♥️♥️ It is going smoothly so far, I just had a small panic and didn’t know what to do with myself :)
