There’s something poetic that Eva Duarte was murdered by her fae husband, and then one of her mortal daughters murdered her own fae husband, and the other was prepared to murder her fae husband.

Jude Duarte is first her MOTHER’S daughter, then Madoc’s
People always say Jude’s personality is a copy paste of Madoc, which to some degree is true. He raised her as a father and very much shaped her. But she was like that before too… just like her mother.
In TWK we get the snippet of Jude taking the training wheels off her bike and getting all bruised up while Taryn stuck to the side walks. And then in TCP we get Madoc’s short description of her mother as being clever and brave and unafraid if the face of Faerie.
She burned down the General’s house with a mother and unborn baby inside so she could get away. To protect the people she loved, Jude would have too.
So yes, Jude was polished by Madoc, but she was shaped first by Eva Duarte.

Madoc/ Oriana parallel
something about oriana cutting liris womb open to salavge all that is left of the woman she loves and madoc cutting down eva and taking the twins to salvage what he had left of the woman he loves, is what makes me love orianas and madocs relationship so much.
the parallels between a loving friend, using a blade to honor her close friends last wish, to protect and save the child whom she then protects with her life and regards as her own child,
and a general’s bloodthirsty, vengeful nature, of which tends to spiral out of control, using his blade to defend his honor, and then caring for the children of his victims as though they are his own, are just so fucking beautiful.
I could’ve worded this better but i will say this now and forever, holly black, you are a fucking genius.
and i am waiting on that madoc/ oriana book pls 🙏🛐
(Emptying out my drafts bc i have 82 of them but most are unfinished)

the way the catalyst (or at least an important piece in getting the plot to start and continue) for the plots in all the Faerie books is a Faerie falling/being in love
Roiben being in love with Kaye is why she didn't die at the Tithe, why she was able to bring down the Court of Flowers, it's why he trusted and listened to her advice even when he had no real reason to trust her
Kaye being in love with Roiben is why she wants to help him so much, why she declares herself to him and solves his impossible quest, and why she brings down the Court of Flowers to save him
Ravus being in love with Val is the only reason she gets help with her addiction and is kept safe from other Fae
Jack being in love with Hazel is the whole reason she goes to the moonlight revel and gets enough info to save Fairfield
Severin being in love with Ben is the whole reason Ben and Hazel have any interactions with him and get his help to fight the Alderking
Madoc being in love with Eva is the reason he asks her to come back years and years later and kills her when she refuses, the reason why he took Jude and Taryn to Elfhame
Cardan being in love with Jude is vitally important, most of his decisions are made because he loves her and trusts her
Vivi being in love with Heather is the reason she learns to respect and understand humans more than her sisters ever did, the reason she's willing to start all the way over with Heather just to be with her
Oak being in love with Wren is the reason he continues to trust and help her when she literally tries to kill him and locks him, why he risks his sister's trust and the High Court never letting him return to help her
Wren being in love with Oak is the reason she tried so hard to help him, the reason she makes such confusing decisions, she's confused, she loves him so much but she's supposed to let him die
there are tons of Fae scattered throughout the books who are trapped in servitude or prison because they had to save their lover, at any cost
(ofc familial and platonic love also matter and affect the Fae but in an entirely different way)
and the way this all connects back to that line in either Valiant or Ironside saying that Faerie do everything with their whole self, love and hatred, they can love and hate for centuries, promises will never be forgotten and heartbreak hurts deeply
a Faerie loves so deeply in this incredibly genuine way and when a Faerie is in love it thoroughly influences their actions
they tell the truth even in ways they may be unaware of (or deeply ashamed of)
(also also also the way most of these pairings are Fae being in love with mortals is soooo meaningful because like despite many of these characters hatred or distaste for mortals and the Fae's general dislike of mortals they can't help when they fall in love with one as naturally as if they were any other Faerie)

Do you think that Vivienne was aggressive like Madoc? That her redcap nature, though somewhat tempered by her human nature, played a role in her pre-Elfhame childhood? Was that why their parents and the other adults were so worried, apart from the cat eyes and fairy ears? Do you think that Eva saw Madoc in Vivienne's eyes and shrank from her? What about Justin? Do you think that they homeschooled her to keep themselves safer? Do you think that she was angry and ferocious at Madoc, then saw that he liked it, then tried to calm down and be nicer and go against her fiery nature and not learn battle strategies and swordplay in order to displease him? This isn't in canon or anything, but it's just a thought of mine.

So like, is Jude the best blade crafted by a mortal man?
Justen Duarte was offered the secret to learning the practice of a 100 years in a single day If " he parted with something important to him" or something of that nature and until like a week ago I had somehow interpreted that as " he needs to leave elfhame and successfully steal something important a.k.a Eva" I was wrong and it's just that he needs to let go of something important to him.
But what if I was half right ?! what if by escaping elfhame with Eva and giving up (at least momentarily) his life's passion of smithing ? (I can't remember the correct term for it at the moment) he fulfilled the requirements and created the most dangerous weapon ever to exist( Jude Duarte)

Every single time I read The Folk of Air, I get so mad at Justin Duarte. After everything he and Eva did to protect their daughters from Elfhame and cover their tracks, they are found because he brags about his ability to forge faerie blades. I know he’s a victim, but seriously?!

Justin Duarte’s bargain with Grimsen
Lowkey we never get an explanation for this, but can we talk about it for a sec?
When Jude meets with Grimsen, he tells her the following:
Tumblr media
So Grimsen doesn’t confirm or deny whether Justin actually made the bargain, but we can assume that he did. Because why would Holly Black even bring it up if Justin just declined it? It wouldn’t contribute to the story. So let’s say he accepted.
We can also assume that this wasn’t a straight forward bargain, like most faerie bargains, it must have been vaguely worded and obscure. Poor Justin probably didn’t know what he was gonna lose. And in the end, he lost his wife, then died himself, and his daughters got snatched away.
On the other hand, there’s also an argument for Justin not having accepted the bargain, because while he was an excellent blacksmith, his blades don’t seem to be renowned for being the best in the world. Nightfell is a good sword, but they never emphasise that it’s the best blade ever. So that might indicate that Justin didn’t receive Grimsen’s boon, after all.
