To my fellow Germans:

Please stop thinking that we loose at esc because people supposedly hate us.

Was our entry better than the last couple of years? Yes! It wasn't the most generic sh!t ever and our lead singer hit most of the keys he sang (all by what I noticed actually).

Was it a good entry? No! It was a sh!t esc entry. No front to the band, no front to the song, no front to the fans. Ask yourselves however: will you remember this song unprompted in a year or two? If you had heard this song for the first time and someone would have played this song to you and named you literally any other modern dark metal band as the creator, would you not have believed them?

The song is not catchy, the song is not innovative in any way, the lyrics aren't breathtaking and the chorus is straight out forgettable. I am not judging taste here, a couple of songs I like match that description. But how would anyone remember this song after listening to 25 other songs, with quite a bit of them being quite memorable?

We need to stop half a$$ing the decision who's representing us with what song and start comparing us with the other competitors.

It's really dumb to keep thinking its because people supposedly hate us when Israel, one of the most hated countries in the world keeps performing so much better than we do in both jury and public votings.

You know what people really hate? Sore losers, and we've really been acting like the person who didn't practice for something and than complains that everyone just sucks when we end up predictably failing.

I do think Lord of the Lost are a nice bunch of people from what I know, I get why people like their song and while I wouldn't rate their song S-Tier metal, I don't think it's bad. But it's not for Eurovision.

SUMMARY. being transgender with dysphoria was painful for y/n but ethan was always there to make it a little bit better.

CRYING FILLED THE bathroom’s silence as Y/N L/N stared at himself in the mirror. This is something that had gone on for the past couple of minutes; he was feeling insecure, more than that honestly. He was unable to pinpoint what triggered these feelings this time but all he knew was that it sucked. He hated getting this way so often but it really wasn’t something that he could control.

Being a transgender male was difficult for a plethora of reasons and the dysphoria did not help matters. He had only recently been starting the process of transitioning. He had started Testosterone, which was exciting to him, but he hated that he had to do it in the first place.

Why was he born in such a feminine body? It was a question that he asked himself too often. There wasn’t many parts of his body that he actually didn’t mind and he didn’t like saying ‘my body’ because he didn’t feel like that’s what it was. Why would he?

The days when he just stood in front of a mirror and cried were not good for his mental health but sometimes he didn’t see how things could get worse. He really did try but the bad days just brought him down so much.

However, he felt lucky that he had such a lovely support system in his boyfriend and their friends. Ethan Torchio had been such an angel to Y/N, even before he came out to anyone. The Italian was so respectful and genuine. He was always ready to share his clothes with his boyfriend which Y/N greatly appreciated.

He was the one who kept Y/N going during these difficult times. The male didn’t know what he would do without Ethan and he didn’t want to think about it since it gave him anxiety.

Speaking of, the brunette had just gotten back home from recording at the studio with the band, which his boyfriend hadn’t realized. The sound of the H/C haired boy’s cries could be heard from their bedroom and it broke Ethan’s heart. He wished that he could take every ounce of pain away but he sadly couldn’t. However, that didn’t mean that he never tried.

The Torchio soon made his way into the bathroom and frowned at the sight of his lover. He didn’t completely understand what Y/N felt but he would always try to and he would always listen.

“Amore mio, what’s wrong?” The words were soft and gentle, not wanting to startle the other male, even though he was in plain sight.

The L/N sniffled. “Everything about me is just wrong! My face is too feminine, my hips are too wide, I’m not tall enough. I will never be able to pass as a guy. It freaking hurts.”

Ethan walked closer to his boyfriend, his body towering over Y/N’s slightly. “Can I touch you?”

He didn’t want to make his lover anymore uncomfortable but he wanted to calm him down, show him love, make sure that he was not alone no matter how much it felt like it sometimes. Once he saw the male nod his head, he gently wrapped his arms around his boyfriend, Y/N’s back to his chest.

“I know I don’t understand what you are going through but it hurts me to see you like this. I hate how you constantly put yourself down. Things will get better and I hope that your dysphoria becomes less severe as time goes on and as the Testosterone starts doing its thing.”

“I’m here for you every step of the way. I know you have anxiety when it comes to surgery and being put under anesthesia but if you decide you need top surgery or anything else, I’ll support you. You’re not in this alone.” Ethan kissed the top of his lover’s head.

He continued what was now becoming a speech, unable to stop himself. “I want you to also remember that it’s okay to take your time. You don’t have to come out to anyone else if you’re not ready and you don’t have to make decisions about surgeries and stuff if you don’t feel comfortable.”

His comment about coming out was referring to Y/N’s family who weren’t all that supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was something that also brought Y/N down but he tried not to care so much, although it was hard since it was his family; his parents, his grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins.

Ethan then placed his head onto his lover’s right shoulder. “When I look into the mirror at you, I see nothing but handsome boyfriend who I love with my whole being. You are the most important thing to me and I will never let you forget it.”

Y/N turned around in Ethan’s arms to look at him. He reached a hand up to wipe his tears, feeling a little better because of his boyfriend’s kindness. “Thank you,” he was quick enough to say before his brain started thinking of just how grateful he was for his relationship.

“Of course, like I said, I’m always here for you.” His reassurance made Y/N feel better. He always loved knowing that he had someone who genuinely cared and wanted the best for him.

Ethan didn’t take long to add, “Now, do you want to go watch ‘Grease’ and cuddle? I think that will take your mind off of things and stop you from spiraling.”

“I’d love that,” Y/N L/N spoke softly.

AUTHOR’S NOTE! if you are someone who does experience dysphoria, i’m so sorry. you are strong and beautiful! i have personally gone through it as well but not to a severe level; but i’ve still cried over it and felt terrible, so i hope this can give at least one person some sort of comfort. i love you all, whoever is reading this.

Ok I thought it'd be irresponsible to talk about Eurovision without speaking about Israel, I excluded Israel in all these rankings because no matter what you support you have to admit that they have broken international law and brought this years contest into disrepute (the reason they disqualified Russia in 2022) by harassing other delegates and if the EBU wants Eurovision to continue I think we need Israel banned until this horrible conflict is over and sorted.

It’s EUROVISON 2024 AW YEAH, time for semifinal 1! (which was yesterday, I'm just getting around to posting)

My rankings for Semifinal 1, best to worst: Croatia & Ireland (tied); Finland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovenia, Serbia, everyone else

And all seven qualified! That never happens. Even better, there weren’t any acts i couldn’t stand - nobody ranked lower than “eh, it’s fine”. That’ll probably change with semi 2 but I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

Notes on all the acts behind the readmore:

Note that all this is based purely on the semifinal broadcast and zero research, just initial thoughts.

Cyprus (qualified): I understand you don’t want your backup dancers to upstage your outfit, but please consider something a bit more than “what I could grab off Target’s discount rack”? Overall a decent if not memorable entry.

Serbia (qualified): I’m not usually a fan of ballads, but this isn’t bad, and the Hot Topic On a Rock (affectionate) staging put it a cut above the usual.

Lithuania (qualified): Outfits from the Talking Heads Factory Outlet on Arrakis (affectionate). Slightly 80s new wave vibes, in a good way. Not my absolute top choice, but I would absolutely not be mad if this wins.

Ireland (qualified): OH SHIT THIS SLAPS SO HARD. Love a good scream session. Top pick. Very likely to be my “I’m super mad this only got two votes” entry.

Ukraine (qualified): Ukraine loves them a mid-song rap breakdown, which isn’t always my fave but much like in 2021, they make it work for them. Singer has a heck of a vocal range. Won’t be mad if it wins.

Poland (did not qualify): Good staging, mid song. Singer keeps saying she built this tower, which seems somewhat disrespectful to the stagecraft crew. Unless she did help, in which case I retract my objection.

Croatia (qualified): OH SHIT THIS SLAPS SO HARD. I was expecting Peak Eurovision Nonsense out of Croatia, but this just straight up slaps. I’m bad at predicting but I honestly hope this has a chance in the finals.

Iceland (did not qualify): Iceland heard they were gonna be in Sweden and sent the ABBA they had at home. It’s a perfectly cromulent example of what it is, but I’m not vibing with it.

Slovenia (qualified): Reminds me of Loreen, but not in a bad way. Tick off your “sheer bodysuit” bingo square. Overall a good pick.

Finland (qualified): Most Peak Eurovision Nonsense of the semifinal. Love it.

Moldova (did not qualify): Look it’s fine, but I have expectations for Moldova based on past performances and this did not meet them. Also a huge waste of a violin solo.

Azerbaijan (did not qualify): If you told me Azerbaijan was going to bring a ballad to Eurovision, this is exactly what I would have expected. It’s fine, but I’m not sad it didn’t advance.

Australia (did not qualify): I kept going back and forth on this one. On the one hand, it gave big Prime-Time TV Appropriate Message energy. On the other hand, didgeridoo? Overall, not mad it didn’t advance. Especially since Australia will never win Eurovision (sorry Australians, you know it��s true tho) so if they’re going to take a finals slot they better bring it.

Portugal (qualified): As ballads go, it’s decent. It is still a ballad. Points for not being in English.

Luxembourg (qualified): I don’t think this will win the final, but it does have a shot at taking the obligatory “conventionally attractive young woman shaking her ass to a pop song” vote (not derogatory, just, it’s a specific eurovision category). I don’t hate it, it’s a bop, I prefer Cyprus’s song in that category but Luxembourg’s staging is better.

Bonus already-qualified songs:

UK: Homoerotic boxing match in zero-G is a staging choice and I’m here for it. Too bad the song doesn’t live up to it. It’s fine.

Germany: Staging: [this is fine dot gif]. Song: I have never heard a song be more Eurovision Bait (derogatory) in my life. Boring. Try harder Germany, I know you can do it.

Sweden: Bland white boys in the Borg cube. The lyrics are “she’s unforgettable” which is ironic as I’ve already forgotten the song.

With Eurovision only a week away the use of #eurovision has emerged. The hashtag is being used to create a community for fans to share their excitement. #eurovision has been used on multiple platforms such as twitter and TikTok to promote the competition. As seen on TikTok a number of trends have been shared such as ranking the songs for 2023, as well as ranking songs that have previously won over the past 10-15 years. Throughout the weeks leading up the artists all share posts about who they are and what country they represent using #eurovision. Likewise, this year on Instagram all the artists can be seen reviewing their top 5 Eurovision songs. Engagement like this encourages the audience to participate and comment their favourite songs.

The use of the #eurovision can help promote awareness to artists and their cultures. Eurovision has the ability to increase the profile of artists that go on the show. The 2021 winners Maneskin went to number 9 in the global charts and were trending over multiple streaming platforms. They are currently going on a world tour in which they are performing at the O2 arena in London. Likewise, artists that have not won still can benefit from Eurovision for example, Rosa Linn from Armenia placed 20th in the competition however has the second most streamed Eurovision song ever with 623 million streams on Spotify.

Along with artists #eurovision can promote different cultures. Each country is able to promote themselves through a variety of means. Each country has the ability to sing in their native language. Once a song goes viral it can help promote language learning. Duolingo tweeted that the week after Maneskin won Eurovision there was a 56% increase in the number of new learners for Italian.

#eurovison can also promote cultures by showing off traditional clothing worn on stage, as well as any cultural references made within interviews.

Another reason to favour #eurovision is the deeper meaning behind some of the songs competing. For example, Russia’s entry in 2021 was called Russian Women, performed by Manizha. Lyrics featured in the song express many stereotypes that Russian women face, such as appearance, age and growing up without a father. However, Manizha challenges these stereotypes singing “Every Russian woman needs to know you’re strong enough to break the wall!”. This was a controversial song for Russia however, the use of #eurovsion was able to spread a message on behalf of those facing these stereotypes.
