Eurovision 2006 - Other Recommended 2006 Songs

Some other songs that just failed to make my top 64, starting with Lordi's Finnish rivals in metal - Kilpi with Toinen minä (Another Me).

This was the song of their two that was eliminated in the heats. Their other song came sixth overall in Euroviisut.

Turning to something completely different, some bosa nova with a hint of fado and Natalie Insoandé.

The title is Durmo com pedras na cama (I Sleep with Rocks in My Bed). Ouch. Natalie ended up in fourth place in this year's Festival da Canção.

Moving to Belgium (again, they're in double-figures for 2006 now) and Laura D who's been given the job of reverse parking history.

In an extremely competitive Belgian competition this year, Laura didn't make it out of the heats, finishing in fourth place in the same heat as Kate Ryan.

Lastly there Gunesh in Belarus, a singer who I've think may make it into a future top 64 list.

In 2006 she's trying to connect hearts, but could only connect enough of them to finish fourth in Eurofest 2006.

Eurovision 2006 - Number 13 - Gosia Andrzejewicz - "Dangerous Game"

This is an incongruous place to start a major music career. In the Belarus national final for 2006, Poland's Gosia Andrzejewicz already released her self-title debut album the previous year. She'd also been to Eurovision once before, accompanying Poland's 2005 entry by Ivan and Delfin - although not as a backing singer, but she was there in the background with an accordion. 2006 would be the year that she wanted to try for herself.

For whatever reason, she did this not in Poland's national final, but in that of neighbouring Belarus. Belarus's national final has only been going for three years at this point and maybe it was seen as the easier path for a new singer to get to the big event.

The song was Dangerous Game written by Gosia herself in conjunction with Artur Kamiński and it was being released on her second album - an extended version of her first called Gosia Andrzejewicz Plus. It's a piece of sultry pop or at least it should be. I'm not sure how big her team was for the national final - or whether that team are the two men in vests pretending to play the drums. Alexandra Gaiduk at least got her guitarist to go completely topless. The entire production, mixing, and staging of this gives the impression of being a last minute rush job.

Still the song's good. It's not too far away from a trap beat, again a bit of a novelty for Eurovision - when did Belarus get to be so experimental in its music offering for its national finals? Over the top of that are the airy vocals of Gosia doing her pop thing and not quite meshing with her backing vocalist. The composition and Gosia's look and voice give hints as to what this wants to be but is struggling to escape the limits of whatever is going on behind the scenes. It resulted in two random vest-clad men to skulk in the background, both strangers to a bongo.

Unsurprisingly this came second last. Fifteenth of the sixteen songs, anchored to the bottom of the televote by that lethal combination of being too different and too under-rehearsed. It wasn't quite the launchpad that Gosia needed.

That came with her next single, Pozwól żyć (Let Live) which hit number one in Poland. As did the follow-up Słowa (Words) and the one after that. Gosia was voted discovery of the year in 2006 for her domination of the Polish singles chart. The album went gold. Three more albums and many more singles followed (several of which also got to number one in Poland), making Gosia one of the most recognised singers in Poland throughout the 2010s

This wasn't quite her final brush with Eurovision either as she did submit a song for Switzerland's 2010 entry, but that wasn't selected.
