The Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx), ranges throughout the temperate and boreal forests and mountains of Europe and Asia. In fact: not only are they the largest of the four lynx-species, they have one of the widest ranges of all wild cats. Due to their wide distribution there are even multiple described subspecies of Eurasian Lynx.

While their current population in the wild ranges between 70.000-80.000, the Eurasian Lynx populations have been threatened in the past due to overhunting for their fur. However, nowadays they're no longer endangered, instead classed as Least Concern, due to the fact that, in all countries except Russia, hunting the Eurasian Lynx is now illegal, and in the 1960s and 70s their populations have also recovered due to their reintroductions into areas of their historical range in Germany, France, Austria, and Switzerland.

Fun fact: the Eurasian Lynx is Romania's National animal (similar to how Scotland's national animal is Unicorn and Wales' is a Dragon).

The Most Feared Cat in Europe | Eurasian Lynx

The Eurasian lynx ranges from central and northern Europe across Asia up to Northern Pakistan and India. In Iran, they live in Mount Damavand area.

Scientific Designation: Lynx lynx Endangered Status: Least Concern (LC) Lifespan: Up to 17 years (in the wild) Weight: 18-35 kg Length: 80-100cm Shoulder Height: 55-70 cm Tail Length: 15-25cm Mating occurs in late winter and early spring in most areas, usually February and March. The female is monestrous, and the receptive period can last 4-10 days. Dens are located at the base of old trees, in rocky areas, or in dense vegetation.

Diet The lynx feeds on small ungulates (hoofed mammals) such as roe deer, and smaller prey like hares where the former is scarce. Habitat Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, boreal forest Lynx are long-legged, large-pawed cats with tufted ears, hairy soles, and a broad, short head.

Eurasian lynx are often larger. In all species males are larger than females. Nocturnal and silent except during the mating season, lynx live alone or in small groups. They climb and swim well and feed on birds and small mammals.

Threats The main threats to the Eurasian lynx are hunting and habitat loss. Although the population has benefited from the ban on legal international fur trade, illegal hunting still represents a major threat. Captive Eurasian lynx in sanctuaries have been known to live to up to 24 years.
