Kdramas i've watched this year
Some of these are older dramas but i'm a procrastinator
Black Knight (2023): Loved this one! I have watched it probably 5 times now. Kim Woobin kicking ass is all i need!
Under the Queen's Umbrella (2022): I didn't watch this when it aired (no idea why). I was worried that the plot would be overrun by romance but thankfully i was wrong. Loved Kim Hye-Soo's performance (i cried a little).
Island seasons 1 & 2 (2022-2023): Honestly i only started this one for Kim Nam-Gil. I loved the cast, but the flow of the plot was a little off (don't know how, i can't put a finger on it). Was positively suprised by Cha Eun-Woo's acting, i think he needs more roles like this! Hot villain alert no.1! Sung Joon as a bad guy is either a blessing or a curse. Cgi could have been better.
Taxi Driver season 2 (2023): Loved the first season so of course i had to watch the second one. Love Lee Je-Hoon. Love the main characters. Love the plot and the message of this drama. A masterpiece. Waiting for season 3.
Weak Hero Class 1 (2022): Only heard of this drama wayyy after it aired (thanks tiktok) and god does it deserve every award there is! I was a bit hesitant because Park Ji-Hoon was the main lead, but boy was i wrong because his talent got me speechless (weren't we all). I cried, i cheered, i shadowboxed, i cried a little more and in the end i called my therapist. Thankfully season 2 is coming.
Bloodhounds (2023): Woo Do-whan and Lee Sang-Yi in the same drama beating people up? Yes please! The plot wasn't mindblowing, but sometimes just simple ass kicking is enough. Bromance was bromancing. Park Sung-Woong with another great villain character.
Revenant (2023): After dropping Mr.Sunshine i wanted to see Kim Tae-ri in other dramas, so when this aired i gave it a go. Her range is phenomenal! I have only seen couple spookier dramas, so i made a mistake and watched this at night (slept with the lights on). The eerie vibes and plot twists were well made. Hong Kyung had great chemistry with Kim Tae-ri and his cop role was refreshing to see after his performance in Weak Hero Class (if you know you know).
Flower of Evil (2020): Okay, this is one of the dramas i procrastinated hard on. It's been sitting on my "have to watch" list since it aired and i'm the only one to blame (i hype up a drama in my mind, then don't want to watch it because now i'm afraid it doesn't go the way i think it does and then i get disappointed blaablaablaa). This year i finally got over myself and why. didn't. i. watch. it. sooner!!!! It is all i ever wanted in a kdrama. 1. serial killers 2. a psychopath (but is he really?) w/ an effed up childhood 3. mindgames 4. marriage problems (but has a lot of soft & cute scenes) 5. Lee Joon-Gi. Also as a plus (hot villain alert no.2) the bad guy is kindaa (i'm sane i swear). I would be lying if i didn't say that i found the wife slightly annoying (might be me, but she went too much back & forth and sometimes i had to take a breather while watching), but all in all this drama will be hard to top and i fell in love with Lee Joon-Gi.
Moving (2023): Honestly one of the best dramas of the year. I don't usually really go for plots that have a lot of romance in them (if you haven't noticed), but i found this one to be really well balanced and the romance scenes weren't "cringy". Although Bong-Seok and Hui-Soo were great and had great chemistry, i looooved the background stories of the parents. Park Hee-Soon also pops up as kind of a non-villain villain. I hope there is a season 2.
Song of the Bandits (2023): Kim Nam-Gil again. 1920s Korea and gunslingers... what more could i need? After Mr. Sunshine left me with a disappointment (this might be an unpopular opinion) i craved for a drama set around the same time period, but with a little less romance (i know, i am defective). I think dramas should explore this time period more, but i understand it might still be a touchy subject. The skills of the cast were obviously great, Kim Nam-Gil killed his role like always, but Lee Ho-Jung as Eon-Nyeon shined with her performance (i am now a new fan). Hot villain alert no.3! I have seen Lee Hyun-Wook in Remarriage & Desires and seeing him as a villain made me feel things. If there isn't a second season i will cry.
The Killing Vote (2023): A "serial killer" in a dog mask making the public vote on punishing criminals and everyone suspects each other? Cyber crime? Chemistry between two cops? Major hot villain (no.4)? Sign me up. I love when crime dramas make you question your people reading skills (i have the tism so i really got none) and have all kinds of theories flying around. I liked that even Kim Mu-Chan and Joo Hyun had obvious chemistry between them it didn't overshadow the main point of the plot. I liked Seo Young-Joo's delivery and i hope he gets more bigger roles. Kim Kwon.... why does the psychopath have to be hot? He also needs more bigger roles. !spoiler! Also Park Sung-Woong killing (heh) yet another morally grey character.
The Worst of Evil (2023): Okay, first of all i have to say... the wife ruined everything (some agree and some don't). We get another bromance duo of the year with Wi Ha-Joon and Ji Chang-Wook. Loved the crime organization infiltration plot, heavily despised the romance plot (sorry Bibi baby). I was constantly on the edge of my seat and the characters started to get so morally grey that in the end everyone needs group therapy. Action scenes were chefs kiss. A honorable mention goes for Lee Shin-Ki as Seo Jong-Ryul (or Chief Seo, knife guy, the man has many names) and Bibi for her performance as Lee Hae-Ryeon.
Evilive (2023): Heavily underrated. Kim Young-Kwang doing what he does best, playing a psychopath. This combined with a bromance plot with the one and only bromance master Shin Ha-Kyun? I'm sold. The dramas literal title "villain story" really sums up the plot. Sometimes you are not sure who to cheer for. Sometimes you are not really sure about your own sanity. But to be fair, so aren't the main characters.
Vigilante (2023): Love it. Currently re-watching it. Needs more attention. Needs more episodes. I'm in love with Nam Joo-Hyuk. The best crime drama of the year, the title is all i needed to hear. Beating up criminals in well made action scenes is my favorite genre. No romance. One sided bromance? Morally grey characters (am i repeating myself now?). Yoon Ji-Tae as a beefy cop and Lee Joon-Hyuk as a slightly insane admirer? If we don't get a season 2 i will start a riot.

Blood bonds - A Suspicious Partner fanfic
Based on the KDrama with the same name Y/N is an English born woman living in South Korea and is best friends with Eun Bong-Hui. You get caught up in a murder trial and fall for a prosecutor who may or may not have slept with your friend.
Noh Ji-uk and reader.
(I know there isn't a massive call for kdrama fabrics but I wrote this so I hope you enjoy it.)
Part one
Arriving back in Korea felt like a dream, it had been too long since you'd been in the home of your soul. Nothing would stop you from leaving it again, no job offer would sway you another time. You were far from a native of the country but there was no other place that made you feel as comforted as the beauty of Seoul. Waiting at the gate for you was Bong-hui, your eldest and dearest friend. You were itching to give the girl a hug, she had split with her boyfriend around two weeks ago, potentially slept with a random guy and then started working for him. Her life had been a series of unfortunate events her whole life, but at least you were both entertained.
Bong-hui’s embrace told your muscles that you were home and you finally relaxed.
“Come on, let's get home.” she giggled and took you back to her small apartment. The two of you had been friends since your mother's met in the local supermarket. Dure you were a year older than Bong-hui but that never was a problem for the two of you. It had been like your souls had been sisters in another life.
Settling into her home took no time and you spent a few days cleaning it up whilst your friend worked. She appreciated the act of service, which had always been your love language. One afternoon you decided to meet her for lunch outside the prosecution office. There was a tissue hanging out of one nostril, a hint of blood soaking into it.
“What happened to you?” You giggled sitting next to her.
“A client. It was an accident.” She laughed back. As the two of you ate the sandwiches you'd bought with you, a couple walked up the steps. You recognised the man instantly as Bong-hui's now ex-boyfriend. She'd sent you plenty of pictures.
“Watch me cursing you. You better remember because I'll be sure to kill you.” She sang at the pair when they walked past. You nudge her in the ribs.
The woman huffed and turned back.
“Would you stop it?” She asked.
“Why? Is singing bad in this country?” Bong-hui quipped back at her. You had to stifle a giggle with a hand over your mouth.
“I know that you are singing this on purpose, so that we hear you. By the way, I heard that you threw yourself on the prosecutor to make a good impression. What right do you have to criticise us?” The woman scolded.
“That's enough. Her trick didn't even work. Try to wash your hair regularly though.” Bong-hui's ex said. Just as you were about to stand up and let out your anger at the pair a tall man in a flashy suit rounded the corner.
“Miss Eun, I've been looking for you.” He said. His voice matches his good looks and you couldn't help scanning his body. You were bold, blame your western routes, you laughed to yourself.
“I was about to go in. Give me a minute.” Your friend rushed to finish her sandwich
The man took a step closer to her, “I…I missed you.” he said, his face not entirely matching the words. Confusion painted everyone's faces as you all looked at him.
“It's only been a couple of minutes. Miss Sun, you are dirty, yet beautiful.” He tried to stop the grimace from taking over his face, “do people know that I fell for you at first sight?” He used words that you may have used describing him.
The awkwardness of the interaction made the couple sneer and walk away. You had caught on pretty quick that he was trying to help her in his own odd way.
“That was weird.” You commented when the pair were gone.
“I don't know what I'm doing.” The man said, sitting down between you and Bong-hui. His eyes looked round at you and he gave you a small nod.
“This is my friend, y/n.” Bong-hui introduced you.
“I'm Prosecutor Noh, Ji-uk.” He said calmly. He glanced at your face, taking in your smooth skin and the gentle scent of strawberries coming from your hair. He looked back at Bong-hui, his lip turning up a little at her greasy unwashed locks.
“Singing a song of a curse is not how you take revenge on your ex. Just ignore him. Be cool and live a good life.” Ji-uk said.
“Why are you suddenly so nice to me? Did you really fall for me at first sight?” Bong-hui panicked for a moment and Ji-uk’s eyes shot to you.
“I'm sorry. Of course you didn't.” She laughed.
“Run Bong-hui at least wash your face.” Did he almost laugh?
Your friend turns away to wipe her face but you continue to watch the man as he enjoys the fresh air. His eyes closed and face turned up to the sun. This was not good. This is the man she had been telling you about. The one who she'd pegged as a pervert and then propositioned in a restaurant, got drunk and woke up in his house. She still didn't know if they'd slept together or not. Now he was her boss and was making her job extra difficult. There was no way you could like this guy, you wouldn't allow yourself to even admire his beauty.
*********************
“Why are you standing at that window? It's getting cold in here.” Bong-hui laughed at you.
“Let's get snacks. I need a pick-me-up “ she sighed, grabbing her purse and replacing her glasses to her face. You pulled the window closed then followed her giddily out into the street. The weather was warm but a tinge of dampness coated the floors and walls from an earlier rainfall. Neither of you took much notice of the lights flickering off as you laughed and joked down the street. When you arrived at the little convenience store your phone began to ring. Staying outside to answer it separated the two of you.
“Hello?” You said into the device. It was a short conversation with another friend, or rather a friend of your father's. Mr Bahng often called to check in with you as your own parents were long gone. They had been killed in an attack when you were twelve and Mr Bahng had helped get the killer convicted. He had only begun working with the prosecution office a few weeks prior but you had been grateful to him ever since. The call finished as Bong-hui left the store, a bag of snacks cradled in her arms.
“I had to use cash, there's a massive blackout.” She explained, the two of you looked around at the dark buildings. Amused by the silliness of it you walked back to her apartment, almost being knocked over by a cyclist.
Entering the apartment building made your skin prickle; an eerie sensation that you hadn't felt in a long time fell over you like a shroud. A pile of garbage bags had been left in the main entrance so you took them out to the bins. Bong-hui went up to her apartment first. At the bottom of the stairs you were greeted by a neighbour who kept you talking for longer than you'd wanted. The prickling on your skin getting worse with each passing moment. You darted up the stairs as fast as you could and burst through the door.
Then, blood, so much blood. Bong-hui's screams hardly reached your ears as you dropped against the wall and sank to the floor.
********
The man sitting on the other side of the table eyed you cautiously as you fiddled with your fingers. The blood on your shoes was beginning to dry and you watched it in silence.
“How do you know Miss Eun?” He asked.
Your eyes flick up to his and quickly drop again. The urge to look back almost overrode your nerves.
“I, um…since I was ten. I mean our mother's…” words struggled to come out of your panicked mind.
“And how long have you been staying with her?” He asked.
“a few days. I just got back from overseas work.” You answer him. The man is silent which makes you look up at him, a pained expression on his face.
Your brain sparked in seemingly the wrong places as your eyes traced the lines of his face.
“What's happening? Why am I…? Do you think- I couldn't-” you start fumbling over your words again.
“No, I'm satisfied that you're innocent, there is a witness who places you elsewhere at the time of death. You'll be free to go soon.” He explains.
“I, can I ask you a favour?” he nods, “can you contact someone for me? Mr Bahng. He works at the prosecution office.” you ask.
“I know him. He is here” The man leaves and you wait in silence. A female police officer came in and asked to take your clothes for evidence and you changed into a sweater and sweatpants that they provided.
Not even thirty minutes later you were beside Mr Bahng. His sad eyes locked on your tired body.
“See what you can get out of her.” the previous man said quietly.
“Mr Noh, y/n has a lot of trauma surrounding stabbing. I'll see what I can do.” Mr Bahng gave him a short bow and led you out of the police station.
“They think Bong-hui killed him, don't they?” You ask once in the car.
“It's the only solution, all the evidence points to her.” He answered you from the driver's seat.
“Then why not me?”
Mr Bahng sighs, his hand on the steering wheel tightened.
“You have an alibi, the electric turned back on in time to catch you on a camera and your conversation with the neighbour. There was enough time for the murder to happen in that time.”
You knew nothing about how the law worked in these cases, you only knew your friend. It couldn't be true, but then there was enough time. Hadn't she said to you just the day before how she wanted to kill him, was it a joke? Or did she mean it? A new fear bubbled in your gut, perhaps it was an old one.
“No, I don't believe it at all.” You shook your head.
“I'll take you to a hotel close by

Suspicious Partner: My random thoughts
I’ve just completed 3 episodes of Suspicious Partner starring Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun and it’s kept my interest so far. It’s nothing groundbreaking, just your typical spunky heroine meets brooding hero and she falls in love but he’s still not yet there. But it makes me happy to watch. It’s the kind of KDrama that I need when all I want is something to make me smile.
I like Nam Ji Hyun here a lot better than in “100 Days My Prince”. She looked so much older in that drama and I couldn’t wrap my head around her relationship with the Crown Prince played by Do Kyung Soo. She just seemed so worldly wise and sure of herself while he just looked lost and much too young for the character he was playing. As lawyer Eun Bong-hui, she seems more in her element and a lot prettier. Maybe she’s just one of those actresses whose facial features are just too modern and totally unsuitable to sageuks.
This is my first Ji Chang Wook encounter and I must say I love watching him. He has that face that suits a broody type of character and his Noh Ji-uk is like a modern-day Korean Mr. Darcy. I think Ji Chang Wook has the kind of look that can swing from drama to light comedy and he’s really easy on the eyes. To me, he must be one of the best looking Korean actors and I find him more physically appealing than Lee Min Ho.
So far so good for me with this drama. I just hope it doesn’t disappoint me in the end. It played in 2017 so the way the story goes is already cast in stone so regardless of how I would feel after it ends, there’s nothing more that can change anyway.
In any case, it’s going to keep me partly occupied until next year when season 2 of “Kingdom” premiers on Netflix.

Okay I watched half of episode 11 last night but then got tired and had to stop halfway through so I’m picking it back up now ✨
I hit max tags with 20 mins to spare so another rundown wooooo:
Eun-Hyeok has come as Bong-Hui’s best friend and no. 1 supporter and they’re having emotions and their friendship means the world to me. They just understand each other so well I want to protect them with my life
Omg umbrella scene give me strength. Ji-Uk knows that there’s more going on but Bong-Hui is being difficult (ik it’s cause she doesn’t want the people she cares about the get hurt, but girl pls it’s worse when they’re in the dark)
Murder boy getting a liiiittle too close and Eun-Hyeok swooping in as he should. I think murder boy might know that our main trio knows and that makes me nervous cause they can all get hurt — and they WILL get hurt if it means taking hits for each other cause they’re stupid and self-sacrificing like that.
I- the foresight guy just got absolutely bodied by a car and murder boy is going after the other guy from the fight holy— ig he was right about two people dying soon 🥴 Ji-Uk is currently the definition of stressed™️ the fact that foresight guy fuckin held out until his girlfriend got there 💔
Damn, seeing a man die really made Ji-Uk sentimental huh — girl if you don’t start being honest with this man
#bam watches k-dramas#suspicious partner#eun-hyeok tried to run with ji-uk and he told him to go away and he looked so sad#but he is persistent. he will not leave his best guy friend alone#bong-hui and eun-hyeok’s friendship remains superior#two squishy little guys — one wingmanning the other to the highest degree#oh my god their families are buried in the same place 😭 crying sobbing throwing up#bong-hui’s dad has such a sweet little cubby 🥺#ffs they missed each other again. WHEN WILL THEY SEE WHAT A FAMILY FEUD THEY HAVE#okay dudes are having a fight in a cafe for uhhhh a reason ?#everyone ganging up on ji-uk to make him smile and be nice while he works lmaoo leave the man be#oh he’s claiming to be a psychic—#is- is he a psychic — TWO PEOPLE WILL DIE SOON HUH ???#oh my god ji-uk is just chilling with a picnic and a book. mourning his family 💔#and bong-hui is joining him and opening up about her dad I- I love them#omg train perv from the first episode is back 💀💀#she rammed him with her bike lmaooo — the fucking feud these two have is hilarious#omg perv saw what murder boy THOUGHT bong-hui saw brooo#they’re gonna find the rooftop body !!#bong-hui being an absolute menace to her enemy’s world I love it#bro one body has been in there for like 3 years at this point but apparently there was more than one#omg hand holding 💔 JUST DATE ALREADY#pls shes holding this confession response over his head he’s so excited about it — his smile is just 💛💛 girl how can you say no to that#they’re both prepping for this day like it’s the most important day of their lives something’s gonna go wrong 😭#FUCK she ran into murder boy and knows it’s him because of his music OH NO#she’s on top of the truth rn I’m so worried for her safety — if something happens to her or to ji-uk I will not cope#god she feels so guilty about making ji-uk defend this guy NOOO BONG-HUI IT DOESNT MATTER#omg ji-uk bought her flowers I’m going to cry#bro my heart is hurting she’s CAUSING misunderstandings on purpose and she’s hurting both of them#GIRL JUST TELL HIM YOU FOUND A FUCKIN MURDERER

Tkem novel 11
Chapter 14 - “Calling out your name”
Gon had asked Yeong to let Tae-Eul go for the day so she could have a few hours of freedom.
Seated inside the spacious helicopter, Gon looked out the window as the aircraft gradually gained altitude. Tae-Eul would be probably strolling through the streets of the capital by now. She would be discovering how different the Kingdom’s version of Busan was from the Republic’s version of the same city.
Turning his head away from the window, Gon fished through his pockets and pulled out his phone. As soon as he opened the browser, the recent search history popped up on the screen. He was happy to have this little piece of Tae-Eul with him, wondering what went through her mind while looking through the list of searched terms.
“Lee Gon”
“Lee Gon martial arts”
“Queen”
“Lee Gon’s ex”
Gon burst out laughing. Secretary Mo who was busy looking at reports— looked up, startled at the sudden sound. Not wanting to bring any more attention to him, Gon cleared his throat, his eyes focusing back on the screen. What he saw next made his jaw clench.
“Koo Seo-Ryeong.”
The internet was crawling with rumors about them, it likely led Tae-Eul to look up the current prime minister.
The last encounter he had with Seo-Ryeong left a sour taste in his mouth. Slightly worried, he hoped Tae-Eul didn’t get any wrong idea. He kept on scrolling, new search items coming up.
“Spicy fried chicken”
“Police officer wage”
“Kingdom of Corea map”
“Busan to Seoul KTX train”
It looked like she had been curious about a lot of things. Then again, he himself had spent days in a library during his stay in the Republic, reading dozens of books and immersing himself in the nation’s recent history.
Gon tilted his head at the word “KTX”, foreign to him. His face froze at what came up next.
“King Lee Ho”
“Prince Lee Lim”
These were words with heavy meaning, bringing to the surface painful memories. A grief so intimate yet shared by every single citizen of the Kingdom that Tae-Eul was now privy to.
Gon sat still and let the cold, artificial air gently blow through his hair.
——
Lost in her thoughts, Tae-Eul mindlessly walked toward her final destination, one of the main reasons she travelled the long way from Busan to Seoul. She could recognize the familiar streets of her neighborhood. If this was the Republic of Korea, there should be a convenient store somewhere near, but she didn’t see any.
There was one thing she was curious about ever since she set foot in Gon’s world. If this was truly a parallel universe, with people sharing the same face albeit with different personalities… then perhaps, maybe, her mom existed in this world somewhere. Perhaps this universe was a bit more lucky and had sparred her life.
If she was alive, Tae-Eul wished to see her, just once.
Instead of seeing the easily recognizable facade of the Taekwondo center, what looked like to be a traditional medicine clinic stood in place of her house. It was a whole other building altogether, with different colors and a different front door. The courtyard where Maximus had once taken shelter was gone too.
It was now dark out, the sun long gone and the chilly November air setting in. Tae-Eul was reluctant to leave. Refusing to give up, she finally rang the doorbell.
A woman she had never met before opened the front gate.
“Jeong Do-In. He’s a Taekwondo instructor at a Taekwondo center, do you happen to know him by chance?” Tae-Eul asked.
“I don’t know anyone by that name.” The lady replied, confused.
“Then… How about a woman named Ahn Bong-Hui? Do you know her? Her face looks really similar to mine… Have you ever seen her?” She tried again, voice wavering.
“Ahn Bong-Hui? No I haven’t. We’ve lived here for 30 years. Why? Did they say they lived here?”
Tae-Eul’s shoulders dropped in disappointment. A tiny, irrational voice in her head had hoped to meet her. She tried to reason herself. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Even if she had met her mom and dad, they would have been completely different people. They would only have the same face, but would be complete strangers to her.
Overwhelmed by the longing to see her mom once more, she hadn’t thought this all the way through.
A flashback of that fateful night came up to her mind. The complete stranger that was once Gon, crossing Gwanghwamun square in determined strides and taking her in his arms, eyes never leaving her face.
“… No never mind, thank you.” Tae-Eul said goodbye. She turned on her heels and walked away wearily.
——
Yeong swallowed a sigh and ushered Tae-Eul to KU building’s rooftop. Gon’s helicopter awaited them on the helipad, its propellers still in motion. Tae-Eul looked at the man who stood across from her, his coat flapping in the wind. His tall figure stood out in the dark, open surroundings of the city behind. Tae-Eul bit her lower lip. She didn’t expect to be so happy to see him, she almost called out his name. She really wanted to wave at him.
This. This moment.
Seeing him again almost made her forget about the vain search for her mom.
Gon joined her in a few short strides and looked at her in concern, his eyes roaming over her and making sure she was okay, worry evident. His expression eased once when he saw she was fine.
“I heard you were looking for me.”
“Yes.”
“Seventeen times.”
“Yes.”
Gon let out a small chuckle at Tae-Eul’s obvious embarrassment. He had no idea how she managed to find a way to reach him. He only knew that if it weren’t for his security team notifying him about the calls, he would have gone straight to Busan.
He had asked Yeong to keep a close eye on her so he knew she was safe. Still, as soon as he was told that Tae-Eul was looking for him, he turned the helicopter around. He was glad she called. It meant he got to see her sooner.
“I thought you were going to stay in Busan. Why did you come so far? Did you get to find Ahn Bong-Hui?” Gon asked.
How did he know that? Tae-Eul threw a sharp, sideway glance at Yeong.
“How long were you following me? You should have lent me more money if you were there all along.”
“Who is she? The person you came all the way to this world to look for.”
“My mom.” Her voice trembled. “If this is a parallel world… and since Na-Ri and Eun-Sup are both here, although I might not exist, my mother could still be alive. I know she is someone else, but I didn’t want her to be sick in this world… I only have memories of her from when she was five. So I just wanted to watch her from afar. Just for a few minutes. That’s why I came here.”
“You should have told me.”
“I was just curious. But she wasn’t there.”
There was no other person who could understand better the sadness left by an absent parent than Gon. He shared her grief. Even if he didn’t understand what she went through, he would still feel her pain.
“Anyway. I had fun today because of you.” Tae-Eul said brightly, changing the topic. She didn’t want Gon to look at her like that, with eyes full of sorrow. And she certainly didn’t want to bring down the mood with talks about her mom. She managed just fine on her own so far. She just wanted to make the best of her trip here and ease her curiosity.
“Is that why you searched for KTX? I was wondering what it was.”
“Search…?”
“The auto-save function told me. You were curious about a lot of things. Why were you curious about Lee Gon ex-girlfriend? Didn’t you think that I never had a girlfriend?”
“Why would you read that?”
“You looked up Prime Minister Koo as well.”
“That was because… because I heard she was the youngest female Prime Minister. I only looked up her name because I was amazed by that. Why? Do you feel guilty? Looks like you see her often.”
“I meet her every Friday.” Granted, it was only to talk about state affairs.
Tae-Eul swallowed the lump in her throat. It was her turn to say something back.
The wind blew sharply around them and the sound of an approaching helicopter could be heard, growing louder and louder. Sure enough, another helicopter landed next to Gon’s.
“Why two helicopters? Are we leaving separately?” Tae-Eul asked.
Gon threw a hard glance at the unexpected new aircraft and glanced back at Yeong in confirmation. Yeong was rapidly talking to his walkie talkie and nodded at Gon.
“Yes, it’s Prime Minister Koo. She probably got a report your helicopter landed in Seoul.”
It was exactly that. As soon as Seo-Ryung heard the news that the royal helicopter had landed on KU Building, she had menacingly ordered her staff to prepare her own flight.
Why would the King come to Seoul in the middle of the night when he should have been in Busan? Seo-Ryung’s gut feeling made her want to find out the reason.
The door of the helicopter opened, and Seo-Ryung came out wearing an elegant white suit. There was no hesitancy in her stride as she confidently came up to them.
“Did you have an appointment with her?” Tae-Eul asked, eyes focused on the charismatic Head of State.
“No way. I came to pick you up.”
“But I have to keep a low profile.”
Tae-Eul was right. Still, her words pierced through him painfully.
“If they see you, just who will they think you are?” He asked.
“Don’t worry. I’ll try not to look too suspicious.”
“You are a fool. The situation is already quite suspicious.” Gon was cut short by Seo-Ryung who stopped next to them and bowed down in greeting.
“I’m seeing you in an unexpected hour, in an unexpected place, with an unexpected person, Your Majesty.”
“You’re right. And you’ve put me in an awkward situation. This is a very personal occasion. I should’ve given you a heads-up since you would be notified of this. I’m sorry I kept you at work.” Gon didn’t try to hide his annoyance. She was clearly unwelcome here.
Completely disregarding Gon, Seo-Ryung let out a bright laugh.
“When it comes to the country’s affairs, personal occasions are business too, and you are my country Pyeha.”
It was a bit exaggerated. Gon wore a patient expression while Seo-Ryeong kept on smiling brightly.
Tae-Eul looked back and forth between the two of them. She could easily recognize the delicate gaze she saw on the pictures gracing the many news articles that came up during her brief internet search session.
This flawless, elegant woman that coveted Gon could not be compared to her.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Koo Seo-Ryung, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Corea.” Seo-Ryong turned towards Tae-Eul, meeting her gaze and extending her hand.
“It’s nice to meet you. I’m a big fan.” Tae-Eul grabbed her hand.
“I’m flattered to have such a young and beautiful fan. May I ask your name?”
“I’m just… I’m a traveler. I’m honored just to be able to see you like this. I’m leaving soon.”
Gon winced upon hearing that she would leave soon. Too focused on the conversation with Seo-Ryung, Tae-Eul didn’t notice Gon flinching.
“This is my first time in the Kingdom of Corea, I feel like I’m in a storybook.” Tae-Eul went on.
“It’s your first time here, but you speak our language very well.”
“Well… I studied liberal arts.”
Gon burst out laughing at Tae-Eul’s reply. This was unlike him. Seo-Ryung carefully appraised the situation. Gon kept staring down at Tae-Eul, looking like a very smitten man. Seo-Ryung’s instincts were right. This was no ordinary situation.
On the other hand, Gon was still trying to stifle down a laugh. He had made fun quips before, teasing Tae-Eul about being a liberal arts major, and this was how she made use of it.
“Let’s call it a day, Prime Minister Koo. I don’t have much time today.” Gon put an end to the night’s impromptu meeting.
“You have a long journey ahead. After you, Your Majesty. I will send you off.”
“Okay then, see you on Friday.” Gon said with a short nod.
Gon turned and walked toward the helicopter. Tae-Eul bowed down to Seo-Ryung and followed him. Under the full moon’s luminous glow, Seo-Ryeong glared furiously at Gon and Tae-Eul’s departing forms.
— —
Fully dressed in his Navy uniform, Yeong came into the dressing room with Tae-Eul in tow. She also looked like she was ready to leave. She had picked up her belongings and wore the same clothes she was wearing the night she came to his world.
Fully clothed in his Navy suit, Tae-Eul stared at Gon with trembling eyes. Keenly aware of her stunned gaze, Gon gave her the badge he had been carefully keeping for the past 25 years.
“I will give this one to you. It seems it was supposed to be passed on to you. I hope this doesn’t put you in trouble.”
Tae-Eul shook her head.
“So you were in the Navy?”
“I left the military as a Navy Lieutenant. I’m not sure if you’ll believe this, but I’m the Commander-in-Chief of the Kingdom of Corea.”
“I believe you.”
“Finally.”
They both smiled, ignoring the heavy atmosphere surrounding them.
“You said your country was about to go to war with Japan. So this is what was happening in the Kingdom of Corea.”
“The Royal Family puts on military uniforms at the most honorable time. It means we will certainly win. I will come back to you with honor. It won’t take long.”
Tae-Eul longed to grab Gon’s perfectly white sleeve. If he didn’t leave in the first place, there would be no reason to wait for him to come back. But she didn’t become a courageous police officer for nothing. She had to get rid of these kind of thoughts, it didn’t suit her. Tae-Eul swallowed nervously.
“… come back?”
“Will you wait for me?”
“See you again, Lee Gon.”
It felt strange and entrancing to hear his name aloud.
Tae-Eul, calling his name.
He would engrave this moment deep in his heart.
“I thought my name was not supposed to be spoken, but I guess it was only meant to be spoken by you.”
— —
Misc.
In the helicopter on their way back to Busan, Secretary Mo quietly observes the couple seated across from her and realizes the huge implications of Tae-Eul’s presence. This is the first time she sees Gon acting like this. When Gon grabs Tae-Eul’s hand and starts to write in her palm, Secretary Mo feels like she’s intruding a very private moment, and can’t help but look away.

THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH EP 5, My Appreciation and How It Made Me Feel
1 of the charm i found in this series was the acting of all actors. I have been in theater before and learn acting from my teacher who seems to teach us Stanilavski’s System of acting. I found it in each leads, they shows us this method and leads to a nice subtle acting which you will missed if you are not a person who likes to pay attention to detail. And also why for me, i falls deep into the characters, because they are so damn natural. As if i watching them not really as an actor, but as them. Very good.
For example with this particular scene where JTE was following Gon to basketball ceremony. You can see JTE actually impressed here but trying to keep her cool. Slight eyebrows movements and slight smile there, i saw 💕
I love startled JTE and playful Gon here. They make me feel butterfly as a watcher
As the series goes, the editing was getting better, i appreciate the effort to make the connected transition between 1 scene to another like when Gon are looking at his search history, he found out JTE was reading about Lee Rim and she knows Gon history now. The camera zoom in to the search page then moved to Lee Rim whicn now we can see him recruiting people that will benefit him for his plan. I swear to god i love Lee Rim, he is so creepy. He gave you offer you cannot refuse. The only thing you need to do is kills your other self. And this line of him is one of my fav, and damn scary with the music while throwing the 2G phone
Lee Rim “연락은 내가 합니다” (i’ll be the one who contact you)
Appreciation for PM flashback because they made it aesthetic. PM walking passing the pictures of her inauguration as PM by the King. I love how the make the transition. Smart.
JTE is roaming around Corea alone and found out many thing, like the rare mineral that Gon owns, yi sun sin statue in Busan, we get a glimpse of her being same face with Luna and JY knows, she saw PM on the street, she goes to police station (this scene shows how she acts inline with her detective background, the method that she use to prove that this is paralel world was practical, she is better than Gon. and also shows she was actually a soft person. Eventhough she knows every familiar faces here are a different person, she still have the same feelings and amount of respect to them) , last but not least what a cool scene where JTE and KSJ being in 1 place and time but different world
She basically run out of money and calling Gon, kind of cute. Its like real stuff you do with your boyfriend and probably because she only knows him in this world. I love the piano bgm everytime they are being lovey dovey 🥰 and the fact that Gon changeing direction to pick her up, makes me blushed 💕 i love how they shot JTE from below the building looking up and saw the helicopter.
I also love JTE and JY bickering here. Both are cute and i love protective JY, he is so cool.
This conversation in front of KU building also shows a good acting by KGE, as Gon asking who is Ahn Bong Hui, she explain it with smile but holding her tears, makes Gon feels and saw her so softly, call the ambulance because im dead. Here is my fav JTE line after Gon asking him who is the person that she looking for in this world
그래서 와 봤지” (my mother. If this is a parallel world, Nari and Eun Seob exist here, although i might not exist, my mother could still be alive. I know she is someone else, but i didnt want her to be sick in this world. I only have memories of her from when i was five. So i just wanter to watch her from afar. Thats why i came here”
This girl is seriously pretty here
Gon brought the topic about what he found in a searching page and teased JTE who look for his ex gf and PM. And JTE says “why you read that? Thats cheating” girl is definitely falling for him and very honest. I love her. And Gons smile as he looking at JTE panic face is everything
Then comes the trouble. PM is here because he saw Gon landed in seoul. I love how Gon describe his relation with PM as “금요일마다 보는 사이” (i think netflix did not translate it nicely, i dont know how to translate it either) and JTE refer her as IU 🤣 i love this line.
PM is a cool woman and very professional, i love her choices of fashion, i love her character. I actually hoping she is somehow will becomes allies. But ..
How it made me feel:
Happy. Most of the times, smile from ear to ear. As i said earlier, the main character of this episode is JTE. Here we can see her feelings grow fonder to Gon. I dont agree if people said that JTE only loves Gon because he is rich. Not at all. Even before coming to Corea she already missed his existence, and left marked in her heart, also if she did not slightly believe in Gon, she will not going to go to Corea with him. And arriving in Corea seeing how Gon is very affectionate towards her and took good care of her, also he is cool at work, makes her fall deeper. Its like crushing back to the person who had crush on you. Very normal.
The other thing i got from this episode is about Lee Rim recruiting people to be on his side by killing their doppelgänger. He inform us that up until now, nobody have ever refuse him. Lee Rim act as a devil who seduces human to be evil by pretending as God that helps them coming out from their problem instantly. Many people lives in an unbearable life they wanted to change it so badly and sometimes took a wrong way. Also here we were shown that greed is a common emotion that human has. Even JTE which we know is a good girl, has it. She is looking for her mother, she might be saying that she will just going to look for her from afar. But i bet, seeing her personality, she will probably hug or talk to her if she really exist in Corea. Probably will not let her go so easily. Just my assumption though.
I hope my eyes did not wrongly see, but i feel like they use a different camera filter for Korea and Corea. In Corea im feeling a sense of like being in the past. It gives an antique feeling. And Korea gave more modern feels. If this is true i appreciate it even more 💕
Last but not least, so far until episode 5, despite being a fantasy genre, i found real emotions and events related to real life here. Appreciate it so much 💕💕

Update on Drama Experiment: Revisiting 3 Dramas in my Queue
So I did it. I watched three VERY different dramas that have been on my queue for a long time with mostly positive results, and I think I’ve had success beefing up my current watch list until “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon” comes out at the end of February. :-)
Drama 1: Liar Game
This pilot episode was surprisingly fast paced and really well done. Sometimes it can be hard to judge a drama from the first episode alone, but the writing was well constructed and effectively introduced us to all the main characters and the plot within the span of the first episode --- avoiding the tendency to take several episodes to explain what was going on. Kim So Eun and Lee Sang Yoon are already compelling, interesting, and fun characters and regardless of the emphasis on suspense over romance, I really think I’m going to continue with this drama. Success! (9/10)
Drama 2: General and I
I could barely finish the first episode and what I did watch really hurt. That is not to say it is a bad drama, I’m just not sure that this is a drama that fits my attention span. The fact that it is so many episodes severely lengthens the pacing of the show and I’m just really not interested in historical politics or action sequences (I guess I should of guessed that), and the opening of the first episode is a sweeping battle. It is visually STUNNING and I could see myself watching episodes here and there and skipping around, this isn’t a drama that I’m likely to continue for the long haul. In general, I just don’t do well with long dramas, because it feels like it takes forever for something truly meaningful to happen. (3/10)
Drama 3: Rich Man, Poor Woman
A very nice first episode. While not as compelling as Liar Game, I think that is by design right now. It is necessary to really get to know these characters and their story for us to understand where they’ve ended up. While possibly painted as a “Cinderella story”, I think this is going to be more of a simple and dramatic relationship piece since both main leads seem to really be struggling with something fundamental psychological. Right now, I am interested in their stories, and was intrigued enough by the first episode to want to continue. (7/10)
As it stands, my current watch list will continue as follows:
Pretty Li Hui Zhen
Rich Man, Poor Woman
Liar Game
Missing Nine
Success!

“Programme Announced for the 12th London Korean Film Festival / 26 October – 19 November 2017
The London Korean Film Festival (LKFF) unveiled the lineup for its 12th edition today running 26 October – 19 November with multiple UK and International premieres, a special focus on Korean Noir and including everything from Indie Firepower and Cinema Now to Women’s Voices, Classics Revisited: Bae Chang-ho Retrospective, Documentaries, Artist Video, Animations, Mise-en-scène Shorts and a roster of very special guests in attendance.
Korea has been in the news more than ever this year with a South Korean presidential impeachment and a change in government, not to mention the current North Korean crisis. Thankfully Korean Cinema has maintained a positive news profile with Bong Joon-ho’s creature feature Okja becoming the most widely seen Korean film ever made. So it’s no better time for the 12th London Korean Film Festival to be back in London and across the UK offering another expansive selection of films from one of the most exciting film industries in the world.
This year’s opening and closing films complement each other as two highly acclaimed dramas presenting unique perspectives on non-traditional romantic relationships – and both star Actress Kim Saebyeok. The UK Premiere of prolific auteur Director Hong Sangsoo’s Cannes acclaimed, The Day After (2017) will kick-off the festival at an Opening Gala with cinematographer and frequent Hong Sangsoo and Bong Joon-ho collaborator, Kim Hyung-ku in conversation on the 26 October. Following bemused characters in matters of the heart, this is “a black & white comedy of missed chances… a Rohmer-esque monochrome comedy of confusion” (Variety). The festival closes on 8 November (in London) with the UK Premiere of emerging director Kim Dae-hwan‘s Indie relationship hit from Locarno, The First Lap (2017) (followed by Director Q&A), which sees a directionless unmarried couple wade through family encounters and a potential pregnancy, in a fresh verité style that is both funny and heartwarming.
Two out of the five Korean hits to grace Cannes Film Festival this year were crime and action thrillers typical of the booming Korean Noir genre, illuminating the dark side of society: The Villainness (following a female assassin trained from a young age, screening as a special preview at LKFF press launch 11 Sept) and The Merciless (2017, Studiocanal, premiering at LKFF 2017), the latest feature from Byun Sung-hyun, a Tarantino-esque moody neo-noir thriller following double-crossing gangsters. “South Korea has such a turbulent modern history ridden with violence and political, social upheavals… I think that may be why we are good at making thriller movies like this,” said Jung Byung-Gil, director of The Villainness” (Daily Mail). It’s fitting that the festival shines a light on the killer genre this year with a full range of crime capers both old and new.
The strand begins with an example of Lee Man-hui’s renowned anti-communist filmmaking, with one of his very early films in the genre, Black Hair (1964), which follows the loyal mistress of a gang boss, whose life takes a horrific turn for the worse after a violent rape is exposed. We are thrilled to be screening the newly restored The Last Witness (1980) that recently played in Berlin and Busan film festivals, with director Lee Doo-yong in attendance; the film is based on a crime novel by Kim Seong-jung and follows lone wolf detective Oh Byeong-ho as he goes in search of the murderer of a small time brewer.
Film Noir was thriving in the 1990s, and we’ll celebrate a strong selection from that decade: the darkly humorous Dead End (1993), The Rules of the Game (1994) following small town thugs trying to make it big and Green Fish (1997), the directorial debut by Lee Chang-dong who is now widely regarded as South Korea’s greatest living director.
In America, Director Lee Myung-Se was seen as Seoul’s answer to Hong Kong’s John Woo with his hit, Nowhere to Hide (1999), a highly stylised violent action noir and an influence on The Matrix. Kilimanjaro (2000) is the little seen, but highly accomplished feature from Oh Seung-uk, starring veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki and Park Shin-yang; an engrossing noir following a detective mistaken for his identical twin brother, a gangster. Die Bad (2000) is action maestro Ryoo Seung-wan‘s sensational debut made in 4 parts over 3 years, following two young men (played by Ryoo and Park Sung-bin) whose lives change forever after a deadly student brawl.
A Bittersweet Life (2005) is Kim Jee-woon‘s follow up to A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) a thrilling noir that shows the ultra violent consequences of falling for the wrong girl. A Dirty Carnival (2006) follows a low-level debt collector as he murders his way to the top, played by one of Korea’s leading actors Zo In-sung. New World (2013, UK Home Ent. release by Eureka) is the second directorial feature from Park Hoon-jung, the writer behind The Unjust (Ryoo Seung-wan) and I Saw The Devil (Kim Jee-woon), in which undercover cops and shady policemen plot to gain control of Korea’s biggest crime syndicate. Coin Locker Girl (2015) is a female crime melodrama from first time director Han Jun-Hee starring veteran actress Kim Hye-soo as the psychotic crime boss known as ‘mom’ whose unsavoury trade includes organ trafficking and loan-sharking.
LKFF has pulled together the best Cinema Now, Korean films that are making waves world-wide in cinemas and online. One such masterpiece is the European Premiere of In Between Seasons (2016) by first time director Lee Dong-eun, based on the director’s own comic book, portraying an intimate family drama following two young gay lovers as they grapple with family life. Master (2016) which took 50.5 million dollars at the box office (topping the new Star Wars Rogue One), is a slick new financial action thriller that follows an investigator who pursues the president of a Korean company that’s involved in fraud and corruption. It stars today’s biggest actors Lee Byung-hun, Gang Dong-won and Kim Woo-bin. Come, Together (2017) is Director Shin Dong-il‘s new drama about a family of three whose ranks are collapsing – a rare insight into Korean society’s highly competitive nature. Warriors of the Dawn (2017) is the popular Joseon Era drama filmed almost entirely outdoors, as a guerilla style road movie, following a group of mercenaries tasked with protecting the newly crowned prince. The Mimic (UK release in 2018 date tbc, Arrow Films) directed by Huh Jung is a chilling K-horror that follows a woman, haunted by the disappearance of her son, who is drawn to a local legend of a monstrous tiger that lures people into its cave. Crime City (2017) is an indie crime caper based on a true story, from director Kang Yoon-sung, that follows a detective (Ma Dong-seok), as he hunts down a Korean-Chinese gang headed by Yoon Kye-sang.
This is the second year of our Women’s Voices strand, showcasing four dramas and one documentary all from contemporary feminine points of view, films that are at the very heart of feminist politics. An extremely current and relevant documentary, Candle Wave Feminists (2017), deconstructs the misogyny and discrimination that was rife within the revolution that led to Park’s impeachment and her spiritual mentor Choi Soon-Sil’s arrest. The feature debut by writer-director Lee Wanmin, Jamsil (2016) is a rare look at two women’s transformative friendship, following a harrowing long-term breakup. My Turn (2017) focuses on pregnancy within the workplace, after a nurse becomes pregnant and tensions and backlash surface. Mild Fever (2017) captures the subtle rift between husband and wife, following a secret that surfaces from the past. Night Working (2017) follows a friendship between two factory workers, a Korean woman and a Cambodian immigrant.
Asian cinema expert Tony Rayns will introduce the UK to Korea’s Indie Firepower, a selection of films from the country’s most intriguing independent filmmakers, including a special focus welcoming Artist filmmaker Jung Yoon-suk, whose films have focussed on Korean social and political life. The Home of Stars (2010) is a sardonic cage of modern Korean history and Non Fiction Diary (2013) deals with Korea’s first serial murder case in the 1990s. His latest, Bamseom Pirates Seoul Inferno (2017) also screens at the BFI LFF (6 and 7 October), embracing nihilism, protest, politics and rebellion and a strong sense of humour following a young Korean, grindcore punk band. Also on show are two of his shorts, The White House in My Country (2006) and Ho Chi Minh (2007). This strand celebrates two other offbeat indies with Merry Christmas Mr. Mo (2016), an unusual tragi-comedy shot in black & white centered on a relationship between an ageing father (played by veteran actor Gi Ju-bong) and his semi-estranged son, and A Confession Expecting a Rejection (2017) a daring and witty film that follows on and off screen characters as they discuss subjects ranging from failed relationships to dodgy film courses.
Dr. Mark Morris returns this year with another finely curated selection of Classics Revisited, focussing on 1980’s veteran director Bae Chang-Ho, who began his career as assistant director to the great Lee Jang-ho (the focus of our Classics retrospective in 2016). Closely linked with the rising ‘People’s Movement’ which campaigned against the authoritarian government, his first award-winning film People in the Slum (1982) echoes the issues of the people at that time. Adapted from a series of vignettes written by Lee Dong-cheol, Bae Chang-Ho crafted a film echoing life at the bottom of society, and ended up having to adapt the social criticism in the script following hints from government censors, blending the tale of these three main characters into a melodrama. In this short retrospective we’ll see a key selection of his films: Whale Hunting (1984) is a much loved Korean road movie following two misfits and a woman wandering a snowy landscape, and The Dream (1990) Bae’s second period film that follows the affair between a young Buddhist monk and a beautiful young woman. Bae wrote the script for The Dream along with aspiring assistant director Lee Myung-se, who had been his AD since his Whale Hunting days.
Contemporary Korean Documentaries have arguably never been more vital in exposing insights into structural inequalities in South Korea, and advocating community building and political awareness. This year the Documentary strand focuses on the activist work of the feminist collective Pink Skirt whose films deal with LGBT and workers’ rights – including Goodbye My Hero (2016) and the diptych Two Doors (2012) and The Remnants (2016) that show the fall out from a demonstration in 2009 against the redevelopment of Yongsan in Seoul, which left 5 people dead and 3 protesters in prison. We will also screen the long overdue Premiere of multimedia artist Kelvin Kyung Kun Park’s A Dream of Iron (2012), an industrial film symphony, looking at the scale of industrial machines and processes involved in constructing huge ships.
The best selection from the Mise-en-scène International Short Film Festival this year includes: Tombstone Refugee (2017), which looks at alternative burials, Home Without Me (2017), which follows a young girl seeking familial love and friendship, Thirsty (2017), which follows a young man struggling to make ends meet, Between You and Me (2017), which looks at the behind the scenes of the making of a film, Dive (2017) about a boy’s love of water, The Insect Woman (2017) about a girl’s fascination and obsession with insects and 2 Nights 3 Days (2017), following a couple on the eve of their anniversary celebration.
For its second edition, Artist Video (a collaboration with LUX | Artists’ Moving Image), sees two ‘Artist in Focus’ programmes with two prominent Korean artists working in film: Lim Minouk and Koo Donghee. Drawing their inspiration from political activist cinema from the 1970s (Lim) and contemporary television and internet culture (Koo), their work is representative of the diversity and richness of contemporary Korean artists’ moving image. Six video works from Lim Minouk (2003 – 2010) include political and poetical work that sides with the vulnerable and those that have been displaced. Five video works by Koo Donghee (2003 – 2012) exemplify her highly staged portrayals of the banality of life, interrupted by accidental situations. Koo uses objects, spaces, animals – often aquatic – and actors who respond in real time, to unrehearsed situations.
Younger audiences will delight in the two Animations this year: Lost in the Moonlight (2016) following 13-year-old Hyun Joo-ri as a dreamy, shy girl who gets sucked into a fantasy world and Franky and Friends: Tree of Life (2016) an exciting adventure in the Fairytale Kingdom, as two friends Kwon and Pong create havoc by asking for more food than they can eat, learning a useful lesson about the perils of wastefulness.
