Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980) X “Polynomial-C” (Aphex Twin, 1992)
Ken Russell’s exploration of a respectable scientist’s obsession with breaking through to other planes of existence through psychedelics & sensory deprivation blends well with Aphex Twin’s hard and dreamy track Polynomial C, named for a mathematical function equally applicable to chemistry, physics, and social sciences. The film is based on experiments by psychonaut John C. Lilly, and (underrated) filmmaker Ken Russell adds his indelibly stylish visuals and Cronenberg-y body horror to make a great cult film, which is expertly made but too weird for the masses.

Stanislas Merhar in Almayer's Folly (Chantal Akerman, 2011) Cast: Stanislas Merhar, Marc Barbé, Aurora Marion, Zac Andrianasolo, Sakhna Oum, Solida Chan. Screenplay: Chantal Akerman, Henry Bean, Nicole Brenez, based on a novel by Joseph Conrad. Cinematography: Rémon Fromont. Production design: Patrick Dechesne. Film editing: Claire Atherton Lots of movies -- think of Sunset Blvd. (Billy Wilder, 1950) and Inside Llewyn Davis (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, 2014), for example -- begin with an incident and then flash back for the rest of the movie to explain it. So Chantal Akerman's Almayer's Folly begins with the camera following a Malaysian man into a nightclub where another man is lip-synching to Dean Martin's version of the song "Sway" as a group of women dances behind him. Suddenly the man who entered the club is on stage stabbing the lip-syncher. The music breaks off and all of the dancers flee the stage except one, who continues to perform the hula-like hand movements as if nothing had happened. We hear a voice call out, "Nina! Nina!" but she continues in her trance-like state for a while until she stops and begins to sing Mozart's setting of "Ave Verum Corpus" as the camera holds on her in closeup. The movie then flashes back to reveal that Nina (Aurora Marion) is the daughter of the European Almayer (Stanislas Merhar) and a Malaysian woman, Zahira (Sakhna Oum). Almayer has come to Malaysia in search of his fortune -- he has heard of a gold mine ripe for the taking. Zahira and Nina live with him in a house by the river until one day his fellow European fortune-hunter, Captain Lingard (Marc Barbé), arrives to take Nina to the city to be educated: Almayer wants her to have the benefits and privileges of a European lady. Though Zahira and Nina flee into the jungle, Almayer and Lingard capture the girl. Nina is intensely unhappy at the school, scorned by the European girls, and when Lingard, who has been paying her tuition for Almayer, dies, she is expelled. She wanders the streets of the unnamed Malaysian city (the movie was actually filmed in Cambodia) and finally returns to Almayer's home. There she's seduced by Daïn (Zac Andrianasolo), a shady young man who is supposedly helping Almayer find his fortune. Almayer recognizes his defeat and allows Nina and Daïn to leave together. Unlike Wilder and the Coens, Akerman doesn't return to the opening scene at the film's end, but instead leaves us with two of her characteristic long takes: The first shows Almayer, Nina, and Daïn arriving at a sandbar where the river meets the sea to await the arrival of the boat that will take the two young people away; the camera lingers in a long shot as the boat arrives and Nina and Daïn swim out to it, then Almayer and his servant, Chen (Solida Chan), push off into the river for their return home. The second long take is a closeup of the haggard, obviously very ill Almayer as he sits brooding in his decaying home, with Chen standing out of focus in the background. At the beginning of this take, Almayer says, "Tomorrow, I would have forgotten," a sentence that he repeats at the end after we watch the sun play across his face -- moving much more swiftly than it would in actuality -- and he talks about how the sun is cold and the river is black. By now, we have realized that the lip-syncher was Daïn and that Chen was his assassin. As for Almayer, we can only assume that he has died. Almayer's Folly, which Akerman loosely adapted from the early Joseph Conrad novel, is clearly a fable about the tragedy of colonialism, but she's not intent on laboring that topic. It's as much an attempt to prod the viewer into contemplating the mystery of character and identity as her more celebrated Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels (1975) was, and by using less radical variations on the same techniques -- extended takes, minimized action -- she used in that film. Akerman developed a compelling and identifiable style, but there is a point at which style becomes mannerism. (We all want to be thought "stylish," and none of us want to be thought "mannered.") I think Almayer's Folly nears that point but doesn't fully reach it, largely because of the compelling performance of Merhar as Almayer, and because of Akerman's use of the setting, with the help of Rémon Fromont's cinematography and Claire Atheron's editing. She also makes fine ironic use of the Dean Martin song and the Mozart hymn, as well as the only non-diegetic music in the film, interludes filled with the erotic longing of Wagner's Prelude to Tristan and Isolde.

Hello tumblr!
I’m here to just talk about this book my husband wrote, I want to help him promote it!
If you’ve ever worked in customer service, especially a call center. If you relate and love science fiction this book is for you! It is SO funny and clever. It genuinely made me laugh out loud multiple times and it’s not just dumb humor. He wrote, edited and formatted the book completely on his own. I am beyond proud of him and want to help share this book with the world!
I’ll add a website link but it is available for purchase on Amazon, and his website at ethangrimes.com. Thanks for reading!

Okej så massor av frågor för the writing ask meme: 4, 5, 6, 11, 17, 20, 21, 22 and 23!!
oooooh, I love getting so many!! *rubs my hands together*
4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)
Camilla was a ghost.
She was the ghost of Castle Krakenburg, that resided in the walls and could be heard giggling or running down through the hallway when a lonely maid found themselves all alone in the hallway. Servants whispered to each other in the corners, stealing a moment or two to chat away from the eyes of their superiors, and they talked about the crown princess that had died at a young age a hundred years ago and that still resided in the walls, looking over the court that never had become hers. Ladies in waiting tried to scare each other over tea with stories about a woman that had wrongfully been executed for a crime she hadn’t committed, the crime changing every time the story was told, and since then haunted the castle, seeking revenge on her long dead executor. The guards tried to best each other with the scariest story about the butcher’s twins that had been found dead in their room some forty years back. To the kitchen servants she was a concubine looking for her noble lover that had betrayed her, to the gardeners a noble’s unwanted bastard child, and to some… to some she was just superstition. The tales that surrounded her were endless. Camilla listened to all of them, perched in a sofa during teatime, overheard them while on her way to her next lesson, coaxed them out of the soldier in charge of overseeing the training weapons. She loved them all, loved hearing about the fear that she struck in people, and how completely off every theory was. No one seemed to connect them to the princess with purple hair. Yes, Camilla was a ghost. She was the ghost of Castle Krakenburg, everyone and no one at the same time.
But she was also a ghost in other ways. She was a spirit that couldn’t get rest, who was condemned to tread through the same hallways, the same halls, the same days for eternity. She walked the same ways, from lesson to lesson she was supposed to attend, from library to music hall, and then down to her daily tea with Mother in the west drawing room. She was a tolerated presence, but she wasn’t much else. She was a princess, which gave her rank and status, but she was also the daughter of a court sorcerer, not a queen. She was someone and no one, a ghost caught in the world it once had inhibited but no longer had any place in. To servants she was someone to envy, her beautiful dresses and lavish dinners so far from their own world, like the dead envying the living. To nobles she was someone to scorn, her very existence a blight on the royal family, a subject to be sneered at like the living despise death. She was dead but alive. Alive but dead. A ghost with a heartbeat, a heart pumping around blood she didn’t deserve in her unworthy veins.
---
This is a bit long, I admit, but I’m very proud of it and I feel like the two paragraphs are so connected I couldn’t have one without the other. This is from my wip Inseperable about Fe Camilla’s childhood. I think she’s a very interesting character, even if canon doesn’t give her enough space or depth, and I wanted to explore how her childhood could have looked like. It’s a character study, I suppose you could say, as well as a look into how the actions and sins of others can shape your life before you have even been born. I have been working on this piece for quite a while, but it’s also progressively becoming longer and longer than I first anticipated... Heh.
Speaking of, this ask is turning longer than I anticipated as well, so I’ll put the rest under a read more!
5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?
Hmn... Lawrence, I think. He’s an oc of mine, and even if he’s not my main character in the story, I believe he’s the character in the story most inspired by my own emotions and my way of viewing the world. Lawrence has to put on a pleasing facade, and his livelihood is dependent on others liking him. It’s only through writing that he is able to express what he truly thinks and feels, and even then he’s forced to do it in a subtle way or tone it down because his peices must always be entertaining as the first priority. My own situation isn’t as dire, but it’s certainly something I identify with.
6. What character do you have the most fun writing?
Oh, Dominic, without a doubt!! I really love writing him, not only does his personality, struggles and his relation to both Ethan and Rayne lend themselves to very interesting scenes and a joy to write, but they also leave room for sweet moments, hilarity, and a good amount of sass if I want to~ Not to mention that he inherited my love for big buff loyal men and I can live out my romantic fantasies of being carried bridal style through him,,,
11. What do you envy in other writers?
The ability to create a plot, no doubt. I’m rather good with one shots, but when I try to write something longer like a multichap or something I tend to get lost in the details. I’m getting a bit better on it, though, because I have learned a few ways of making drafts and outlining and such, so it’s a tad easier. But one shots are still my forte, and I want to brave out in longer stuff.
17. Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?
Hmn... Now this sure was an interesting question... The most things I have heard about this is people being confused or surprised about the topics I decide to write about. It’s a tad darker and angstier than expected, I believe, haha. It seems blood and gore doesn’t really fit with the soft aura I have, and that surprises people. But this is what I’ve heard from friends and such, and I don’t know if that’s something that would surprise those who know me by my writing, not my personality or appearance.
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
Ohohohoho~ *rubs hands together* happily!
While writing Inseperable there’s a lot of meta, actually, mostly callbacks (callforths?) to canon or building up to things that happen in canon. Canon shows that Xander has gone through many changes to mold himself into the perfect crown prince, but what I know it doesn’t talk much about how Camilla’s personality was as a child, and how she grew into what she became to be. So the most part of meta is building up to canon, like events mentioned in canon (like the concubine wars), but mostly how their personalities and bond has changed from childhood to the adults they are in canon. There I work a lot with how the past changes the present, even the past we had no control over, like who our parents are.
In Madame Guillotine, however, the meta is a bit different. There I work a lot with circles, “what goes around comes around” and repeating history. For example, Rayne that shackles Dominic to him, and uses threats and punishments to keep Dominic in line, while remaining unknowing that that’s what his father did to his mother at the beginning of their (arranged) marriage. Or how Rayne’s father stabbed Dominic’s mother in the back and then publicly executed her without giving her the chance to defend herself and her country in battle, and then ends up meeting the same fate - betrayed, and publicly executed in front of a cheering audience, with no way of defending himself from Dominic’s revenge. It’s a bit of the characters sealing their own fates, pushing each other into craving vengeance, and then being surprised by the knife in the back it gives them. All of it is connected, everything a circle, going on and on...
21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
Well to be honest with you I wish I could make Inseperable into a film or something. There are a few scenes that I think would just be better on screen, that need a motion that is much harder to capture in words with the same emotion.
22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?
Oh, yes, many times! It’s good to look back on old works, to find old ideas I had and see if there’s something I can recycle or, if the work is unfinished, mature into a improved version. I can also find inspiration there, older works I’m still proud over can fuel me to continue on on the projects I have. And I can always look back on them and see how much I have improved. When I read them I find myself editing the text in my head, which shows how much I’ve improved since I wrote it, and that I still am improving. It’s very refreshing to look back on older works.
23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
Hmn... This one is a tricky one, because most of the ideas I have in my head are things that I have for daydreaming, and it’s few that I actually have intention of writing. The story idea I’ve had in my head for the longest would probably be what would become Insperable, I think? Ever since I learned of the concubine wars when playing the game for the first time I wanted to explore that, as well as how the nohrian sibs grew to become so close despite that. But it took time for the plot to actually grow, and for the longest time it was just a vague idea of “I wanna write on this topic”, so I don’t know if it counts...
This was really fun! Thank you so much for asking~!

Ethan P. Flynn - Everybody’s Dying to Meet You
“If this is the B side whats on the A !“ frågar någon på hans Bandcamp och jag undrar detsamma.
Spellista #1.

“The Satanic Temple Fact Sheet” (Essay by Reverend Joel Ethan)
The Satanic Temple is a self described "Yes Men" styled satire/activist group that uses satanic-themed imagery and language to get media and public attention. They are not Satanists, do not have shared “deeply held beliefs” and are unrelated to Satanism, a globally recognized religion founded in 1966 by Anton Szandor LaVey.
SOME FACTS TO CONSIDER:
In 2013, Spectacle Films ran ads looking to cast characters for a mockumentary about a fake religion, that film was to be titled “The Satanic Temple” — the casting director was listed as “Lucien Greaves.”
[newsbusters.org | doubtfulnews.com | miamiherald.typepad.com | ritualabuse.us]
Launched in 2013, The Satanic Temple’s (TST) website claimed to believe in and worship a literal Satan. The TST trademark filing contains documents that have these claims as well.
[web.archive.org | bizapedia.com]
TST Co-founder Malcolm Jarry (not his real name) has stated that TST was originally conceived as a backlash to US President Bush-era “religious protections.”
[nytimes.com]
Now credited as co-founder and spokesperson, “Lucien Greaves” is in fact a character that has been played by several people, including an unnamed actor, Shane Bugbee and currently by Doug Mesner (not his real name). Shane Bugbee was paid by Spectacle Films for his work with TST. There is a yet unnamed 3rd TST co-founder.
[shanebugbee.com]
In a 2013 Vice interview “Doug Mesner” says that TST is satire and states that it is “like a darker Yes Men.”
[vice.com]
In a 2014 Village Voice article “Malcolm Jerry” is outed as the filmmaker Cevin Soling, owner of Spectacle Films.
[villagevoice.com]
Spectacle Films has documented most major TST public events.
[duckduckgo.com]
10 years before TST, “Doug Mesner” produced illustrations for an edition of Might Is Right, published by Shane Bugbee (who was a Church of Satan member at the time) with an introduction by Anton LaVey, founder of the CoS, and afterword by Peter H. Gilmore, current High Priest of the CoS. Originally published in 1890, Might Is Right is cited and paraphrased in LaVey’s 1969 book The Satanic Bible, which is universally accepted by religious scholars as the founding document of the religion Satanism. In the following years “Mesner” would often appear on Radio Free Satan, an internet radio show closely connected to the CoS.
[archive.org | shanebugbee.com | cimminneeholt.com]
The original TST website listed Neil Bricke as the founder. This was apparently a smear campaign that was removed a few months later, as Neil Bricke is actually the founder of SMART, who has had a longstanding public feud with “Doug Mesner,” an alias used since the mid 1990’s by Douglas Misicko.
[ritualabuse.us | returntothepit.com | ritualabuse.us | web.archive.org]
“The Satanic Temple” is a registered Trademark of United Federation of Churches LLC, which is listed as registered to Douglas Misicko, 519 Somerville Ave., No 288, Somerville, MA 02143-3238. Reason Alliance LTD is a religious non-profit also registered to Douglas Misicko at the same address.
[bizapedia.com | bizapedia.com/ma/united-federation-of-churches-llc.html | irsexempt.com | taxexemptworld.com]
Reason Alliance LTD paid bills for, and provided 501c3 documentation in support of, TST’s After School Satan Club in Seattle, however their own website claims they do not believe religious organizations should be tax exempt.
[judicialwatch.org | judicialwatch.org | freebeacon.com | afterschoolsatan.com]
Original TST “High Priest” Brian Werner states in his 2014 resignation video that TST is a political organization that has nothing to do with Satanism. Werner claims the actual people behind TST have no interest in or connection with Satanism, a claim echoed by Bugbee.
[youtube.com | shanebugbee.com]
TST spokespeople are on record saying you do not have to be a Satanist to join TST, you simply need to support their political efforts.
[brokeassstuart.com]
The Oklahoma 10 Commandments monument case was won by ACLU representing two Christians opposed to the monument. TST and its Baphomet monument were not involved with the case, however they claimed victory publicly, an intentionally confusing narrative picked up by many media outlets. This tactic has become MO for the TST.
[acluok.org]
BACKGROUND CONTEXT ON TST
Misicko aka “Mesner” (as “Lucien Greaves”) has claimed The Satanic Temple has no shared lineage with the Church of Satan, though he was publicly associated with many Church of Satan members and projects in the decade before The Satanic Temple launched. TST uses imagery and language obviously inspired by well-documented Church of Satan publications and trademarks, that are different enough to avoid legal issue but similar enough to cause public confusion. Indeed, The Satanic Temple is often referenced by the media as the Church of Satan, and there is evidence of people joining The Satanic Temple thinking they have joined the Church of Satan. (youtube.com). Occam’s razor would suggest this is not unintentional. It should be clear by examining their site and public statements that The Satanic Temple has no consistent nor “deeply held beliefs” and is not practicing the globally-recognized religion of Satanism established by LaVey in 1966, rather it uses the term Satanism and popularly associated imagery as a means to get attention from the media. It’s also entirely plausible that Spectacle Films is still in production of the feature length mockumentary for which they began casting in 2013.
SATANISM AS A RECOGNIZED RELIGION
Satanism as a religion and philosophy was first codified in 1966 when Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan. Prior to this, the terms "Satanist" and "Satanism" were used primarily as insults and a means for condemnation as heresy by Christians without any specific definition. Religious scholars are in agreement on this point and while many people have claimed knowledge of long standing “secret Satanic traditions,” no evidence has ever been put forth to confirm these statements. These claims have been researched and carefully examined and are considered fraudulent by the academic community.
As Satanism is a recognized “New Religious Movement,” it's important for an understanding of what is and what is not Satanism to be maintained. “The Satanic Panic” in the 1980s-90s is evidence of a willful distortion of this religion as the concept of a conspiracy of murderous “satanists” was promoted primarily by evangelical Christians and taken-up by the media worldwide. Law enforcement debunked the claims of the evangelists but not before many people had become victims of false accusations of ritual child abuse, sacrifice, and kidnapping.
Some Christians—despite the five decades of a clearly defined belief system called Satanism expounded by a worldwide organization—still use this term to reference any acts or beliefs they consider to be “evil” or simply contrary to their own beliefs. Ill-informed members of law enforcement agencies and journalists, often believers in some form of Christianity, also continue to misrepresent the religion of Satanism. If the definition of Satanism is not kept clear, any unstable or insane person working from a Christian context could claim their actions were due to self-termed “satanic beliefs,” thus criminally implicating actual open adherents of Satanism to the public at large, people who are not generally familiar with the beliefs and tenets of religious Satanism. The recent case of murderer Amanda Barbour, who along with her boyfriend murdered one person but claimed to have murdered many others as part of an interstate “satanic cult,” is another example.
The Church of Satan works publicly to maintain a clear understanding of the atheist, individualistic, and law-abiding nature of Satanism and regularly consults with law enforcement as well as journalistic researchers and academicians to this end.

Paint You Wings ~ Ethan Dolan {Part One}
[A/N: Okay so I literally could not think of a summary that didn’t sound completely stupid, but when I do I’ll edit this and post it lmao sorry]
Looking at the clock was a bad idea. I didn’t need to be reminded of the fact that the most important meeting of my career was in less than five hours and I hadn’t gotten a single minute of sleep. It only added more stress.
As if sleeping in dead silence wasn’t difficult enough, a bloodcurdling screech was heard from the other side of the wall. Without thinking twice, I jumped out of bed with an Exact-O knife and ran out of my apartment and pounded on the door next to mine several times.
It opened slowly, revealing a tall guy with a strand of purple hair in a black hoodie. He was gripping his right bicep and wincing. “Yeah?”
I went blank for a second. This guy was attractive to say the least. His features were extremely defined and his hair cropped his face in the perfect way. “Huh? Oh, um, I heard a scream.” I shook my head and held up my Exact-O knife.
The guy laughed, then opened the door a little more. “Sorry, my brother and I are filming a video. He just tased me.” His smile shifted to one side as he leaned against the doorway. “We didn’t mean to, like, alarm you.”
I shook my head. “No, no, you’re fine.”
We stood there for a solid ten seconds.
“Uh, I’m Ethan by the way.” He stuck his hand out. I stared at it for a minute before realizing I was supposed to shake it.
“Oh! I’m Averly. Nice to meet you, Ethan. Um, I should, uh, go get some sleep.” I gestured over my shoulder and turned around slowly.
He scoffed. “Sleep? It’s only, what, nine?” He laughed once more. His laugh was loud and contagious, but its authenticity made it okay.
I couldn’t help but laugh myself as I turned back around. “Try three in the morning.”
His jaw dropped slightly. “Are you kidding? Gray! It’s three AM! We need to freaking finish this!” He shouted the last part over his shoulder. “Uh, yeah, sorry about scaring you, Averly. I’ll see you around, maybe?” He smiled at me again and I swear I almost melted.
“Yeah, maybe. Bye Ethan.” I turned around and walked back to my apartment. After I put my Exact-O knife back in its box, I crawled back into bed.
Surprisingly enough, I managed to drift to sleep fairly easily after that. The next thing I remembered was my alarm going off. It was hardly even a struggle to wake up, I felt fully refreshed.
After I showered, I had a mental debate about which dress to wear: Navy blue with long sleeves and gold accessories, or sleeveless violet with a floral print cardigan and silver accessories.
I wound up choosing the violet one, then curled my hair. As I left the apartment, I grabbed my keys, phone, and portfolio. When I opened the door, the guy from last night - Ethan - was leaning against the railing, looking down at the parking lot.
He turned his head to see who I was once I closed the door and a small smile crept onto his face. “Hey, Averly, right?”
I smiled and nodded my head. “Uh, yeah. Ethan?” I’m not sure why I asked. I knew it was Ethan.
“Yeah, yeah. You look nice.” He complimented, looking me up and down. I laughed and glanced over myself once more.
“Oh, thanks. Important meeting.” I shrugged. He tilted his head barely. “Um, I’m trying to get some of my pieces into Art Pour L'âme.” I gestured with my portfolio.
His mouth fell open. “You’re an artist?” That smile came back slowly.
I couldn’t help but laugh quietly. “Yeah. I should get going. I’ll see you around.” I smiled and started to walk towards the stairs.
“Yes! I mean, yeah. Totally.” He waved in small motions as I left. A few seconds after I reached the steps, I heard his door open and close.
I put my portfolio in the backseat, then set off to the gallery. On the drive over, I mentally reviewed the way I would explain the names and meanings of all of my pieces. I came up with about seven-billion for each piece, but couldn’t decide which ways sounded less pretentious and douchey.
Finally, I arrived at the gallery. It took about thirteen mirror pep-talks before I could get out of the car, and twice that to set foot inside. Luckily, I walked in just as the executive display director, James Clifton, was coming to meet me.
He was dressed in an all-black suit with a yellow tie and handkerchief. He smiled at me, then gave me a kiss on both cheeks. “You must be Averly Dixon, yes?”
I smiled and nodded my head. “Yes Sir. I just want to let you know that I’m very grateful for this opportunity and it’s a complete honor just to be here.”
He nodded his head and smiled. “The honor is all mine, Miss Dixon. Now, let’s have a look at some of your pieces. These aren’t the originals, right?” He pointed at the portfolio.
“Um, n-no Sir. You said to take photos of the pieces, right?” Instantly, I started to regret every decision I’d ever made in my entire life.
He nodded his head, then opened the portfolio. “Yes, yes.”
I nodded slowly, but held my breath as he started to glimpse through the pictures. His face showed… Dissatisfaction. Almost like he was expecting me - a seventeen-year-old from Dallas, Texas - to be a Picasso Mini-Me.
He clicked his tongue slowly, then slid the photos back into the portfolio. “Miss Dixon, you have an impeccable style. It’s all very unique in one sense, but I feel like I’ve seen all of these before. Like you’re a garage-band making covers of popular songs, but with art. Do you understand?” He put a hand on my knee and pouted.
I nodded my head slowly. “Yes, I understand.”
He slowly took his hand away. “But as I said, your style is simply breathtaking, so I’m going to propose an idea. I will give you a month to give me something I’ve never seen before, and you will earn not only a display, but quite possibly your own exhibit.”
My breath hitched in my throat. My own exhibit? Not possible. “Really?” Mr. Clifton nodded. “Thank you so much! You won’t regret it.” I stood up, shook his hand, grabbed my portfolio, and went back out to my car. This was my real chance, and I wasn’t about to squander it.
Rather than going home, I drove straight to my studio and searched for inspiration. Only, I couldn’t. If I looked at another piece of work, I knew I would inadvertently “visually cover” it. I had to be careful if I ever wanted any of my work in the Art Pour L'âme.
My mind raced back and forth. LA, Dallas, family, friends, urban, rural, male, female, light pallet, dark pallet, and everything in between. I sat in front of a blank page in an open sketchbook for two hours, and it stayed just the same. Not a single pencil stroke or even mental map of an idea. I was completely blocked.
Never had I ever been blocked before that moment. I always found something to create. Then again, everything I had made up until this point was just a twist on something everyone’s seen before.
After convincing myself that discouraging thoughts and white blank pages were getting me nowhere, I closed my sketchbook, changed out of my art-clothes, and went back to the car. Instead of listening to music on my commute, I let the silence take over, hoping it would give me answers.
It didn’t. Ten minutes in the car filled with boring nothingness, all to no avail. I walked up the steps, then down the way to my apartment, only to find a blue sticky-note with sharpie on it.
(123) 456 - 7890 - Ethan :)
I pulled the sticky-note off the door and took it inside with me, then sat my portfolio in the living room. I wasn’t ecstatic about how the meeting went, but I could recover. I knew I could.
My phone started buzzing on the table. It was a call from Ellie, my fourteen-year-old sister.
“Hey, El. What’s up?”
“You need to come home.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. After our dad threw me out, there was no way I was going to go home. “What makes you think I need to do that?”
She sighed. “It’s Dad.”
“What about him?”
She was quiet for a minute, which was never good. “He wants you to come home, Av.”
I shook my head, despite the fact that she couldn’t see me. “Ellie, he isn’t my dad anymore. He kicked me out, remember? He doesn’t want me to come home. He wants to stop feeling guilty. I’ll talk to you later, okay? For now, I’ve gotta make an important call.”
“Averly, don’t be like that.”
I almost scoffed. “Like what, Ellie? I promise, he doesn’t want me home. I’ll call you tonight. I love you.”
She hung up without another word. I sat my phone down on the table once more and stared at it. Part of me hoped she would call back, but another part - the more sensible part - knew she wouldn’t. She worshiped the ground our dad walked on. Hell, she thought he hung the moon. She was naive and it killed her quite often.
Instead of letting my thoughts overwhelm me like usual, I picked the phone back up and dialed a number. Not Ellie’s. A number I had never dialed before, but I knew I would in the future.
Thank y’all so much for reading! I think I’ll try to update every week in the Saturday-Monday range :)

If I may: I would not presume to suggest what categories to cut during the Oscars show but – Cinematography and Editing are at the very heart of our craft. They are not inherited from a theatrical tradition or a literary tradition: they are cinema itself.
Även förhandstippade Alfonso Cuarón stämde in i kritiken:
In the history of CINEMA, masterpieces have existed without sound, without color, without a story, without actors and without music. No one single film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing.
Markerar mina tippade vinnare i fetstil.
Best Picture:
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice”
Den tidigaste förhandsfavoriten var publiksuccén »A Star is Born«.
Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Lead Actress:
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” Glenn Close, “The Wife” Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born” Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Supporting Actor:
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, “Vice” Marina de Tavira, “Roma” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
Director:
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War” Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” Adam McKay, “Vice”
Animated Feature:
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson “Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Animated Short:
“Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine “Bao,” Domee Shi “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall “One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
Adapted Screenplay:
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen “BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins “A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
Original Screenplay:
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader “Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “Vice,” Adam McKay
Cinematography:
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
Se den, så förstår ni.
Best Documentary Feature:
“Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu “Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen
Best Documentary Short Subject:
“Black Sheep,” Ed Perkins “End Game,” Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman “Lifeboat,” Skye Fitzgerald “A Night at the Garden,” Marshall Curry “Period. End of Sentence.,” Rayka Zehtabchi
Best Live Action Short Film:
“Detainment,” Vincent Lambe “Fauve,” Jeremy Comte “Marguerite,” Marianne Farley “Mother,” Rodrigo Sorogoyen “Skin,” Guy Nattiv
Best Foreign Language Film:
“Capernaum” (Lebanon) “Cold War” (Poland) “Never Look Away” (Germany) “Roma” (Mexico) “Shoplifters” (Japan)
Film Editing:
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman “Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito “The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis “Vice,” Hank Corwin
Sound Editing:
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst “First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan “A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl “Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Sound Mixing:
“Black Panther” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “First Man” “Roma” “A Star Is Born”
Production Design:
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler “First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton “Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim “Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Original Score:
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard “Black Panther,” Ludwig Göransson “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell “Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat “Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
Original Song:
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
Kvällens mest givna vinst?
Makeup and Hair:
“Border” “Mary Queen of Scots” “Vice”
Costume Design:
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter “The Favourite,” Sandy Powell “Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell “Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne
Visual Effects:
“Avengers: Infinity War” “Christopher Robin” “First Man” “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

Check Out Limited Edition Prints At The Chicago Printers Guild Publishers Fair Saturday
NORTH CENTER — The Chicago Printers Guild is moving its publisher’s fair to the Constellation venue in North Center this year.
The guild is a nonprofit trade organization for Chicago-area printmakers interested in the promotion of print culture.
On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the guild will host over 30 artists at Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave., for its free Chicago Printers Guild Publishers Fair.
“We started the guild in 2009 and it was small group of like 10 printmakers,” said Rachelle Hill, one of the event’s organizers. “Back then there were so many printmakers in Chicago, but no one really knew each other. So we started opening up our spaces for people who do letterpresses, design, screen printing. It started out as a place where you could bounce ideas off of each other.”
As the guild has grown, its programing has grown to include lectures, workshops, field trips and art exhibits for its members. An archive of its members’ work is also now maintained at the Harold Washington Library.
“Our work in the library archives was studied by YOUmedia students. They looked at our work from the guild and then students picked one printmaker to inspire them,” Hill said. “After they did research on that guild member, the students created their own art.”
Because the guild want to cultivate future printmakers, it’s also inviting the recipient of the Chicago Printers Guild Student Award, as well as students studying printmaking at Harold Washington Library’s YOUmedia program, to showcase their work as well.
The first fair the guild organized was in 2016 in Logan Square. Hill said the decision to move the fair to North Center this year was partially to have it be more accessible for people with disabilities.
“This year there will also be framing available on site at the fair from The Frame Shop,” Hill said. “It’s nice because a lot of people buy prints and they just let it sit in the closet. I do that sometimes. So it’s exciting we’ll have framing available at the fair.”
Hill says the fair allows people a unique opportunity to chat with artists and learn about the Chicago area’s rich tradition in printmaking, and the majority of the work showcased is extremely limited and likely to sell out.
This year the fair will also have on display the large-format steamroller prints created by printmakers at the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative’s 2018 Steamroller event.
Featured Artists at this year’s fair include: • Alexandra Blom • Andrew Mullally • Anna Hasseltine • Ben Chlaplek • Bob Scheffler • Buffalo Buffalo • Chimera Press • Chloe Firth • CROOKEDPAW • Cul de Sac Press • Current Location Letterpress & Curiosities • Dan Grzeca • Deborah Maris Lader • Dylan Roberts • Emma Bilyeu • Ethan D’Ercole • Fata Morgana Press • Hoofprint • Katie Chung • Michelle McCoy • Pegboard Press • POWER WASHER ZINE • Rachelle Hill • Ryan Kapp • Sonnenzimmer • Tabor Shiles • Victoria Marie Barquin • Wes Beeler • Wesley Kramer
