Dai-Long Lang > Da-Long Lang - It's the same.

Jack Cameron > Alf Aldown - Better, only because it's a Deid Mann tier awful name rather than a boring realistic name.

Turnabout Target > Turnabout Trigger - Better, sounds more like a presidential assassination attempt.

The Imprisoned Turnabout > The Captive Turnabout - Better, less long-winded.

The Inherited Turnabout > Turnabout Legacy - Better for same reason as above.

The Forgotten Turnabout > A Turnabout Forsaken - Sounds more pretentious, but probably better because less confusion with The Lost Turnabout, where Phoenix forgets.

The Grand Turnabout > Turnabout for the Ages - Worse, I think. It sounds cooler, but doesn't have any chess connotations. They should have called it "The Grandmaster's Turnabout" or "Turnabout Checkmate", I think.

Also, have updated case cards to help you get used to the new names.

EDIT;

Some extra things:

* iFly Airlines in AAI1 has been reverted to its Japanese name of "GoYou". This was probably done because iFly is the name of a real Russian airline with global sanctions against it since 2022.

* As a result, Hugo Ifly is now Ugo Hughes and the tanuki called Mr. Ifly is now Captain Ugo.

* Moozilla is now Taurusaurus, which I think is a better name.

* The Grand Tower is now the Bigg Building, suggesting that Big is not merely its size, but a Mr. Bigg is its proprietor.

* The Zodiac Hall galleries are now referred to as seasonal "Wings" rather than "Palaces". Makes more sense.

* Edgeworth Law Offices is now referred to as Edgeworth and Co. Law Offices, the Co. being Eddie Fender (aka Ray Shields). Again, makes more sense.

* Rocky the bear is now Teddy, since his owner is now already Rocco as a Rocky reference.

* Anubis the hunting dog is now Helmut, a lame pun on "hell mutt".

* Astique the elephant is now Azea, like an "Asian" elephant.

* Ally the alligator is still the same. Regina Berry is not very good at naming animals.

Remaining new names in the official Investigations 2 Localisation - Cases 1-3

This is the 68th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 13 days left until release!

Today's topic: the remaining new names in the official Investigations 2 localisation from cases 1-3!

Thanks to the release of the demo of the Investigations Collection and some very hard-working people we now know of all the remaining new names for the characters and cases in the official I2 localisation. Since there are so many names to discuss I'm going to divide this into two posts, one for the cases 1-3 and one for cases 4+5, because most of the names we already know of (that I discussed in previous countdown posts) are from the first two cases. First, the names of the characters:

Bastian Rook (for Ethan Rooke): His last name was already known and I've talked about how I don't like that it's just the name of the chess piece he's supposed to represent, I prefer the fan translation for that one, it's a little bit less on the nose (same with "Knight" and "Knightley"). His first name sounds similar to bastion, a fortified building, which fits what the rook is and Rooke's job as a bodyguard protecting his "king". His first name in the fan translation has a similar connotation meaning "safe and strong". Between those two I don't really have a preference, they're both good choices for his first name.

Samson Tangaroa (for Jeffrey Masters): A very drastic change! His official name has a more elaborate meaning with both parts referencing mythical figures: Samson to the judge in the bible who lost his superhuman strength and was subsequently imprisoned, fitting Masters' own imprisonment, and Tangaroa to a Māori god of the sea, fitting the nautical theme of his chocolate desserts in the contest. In contrast, his fan translated name is a play on "master chef" (even going as far as giving him the nickname "Master Jeff") and not much more. Purely from the meaning his official name is obviously better but I prefer the sound of his fan translated one. It sounds more like a complete name instead of two that just got stuck together, though that might change once I read his official name in context a few times.

Judy Bound (for Katherine Hall): In this case the name puns are about equal, the official localisation goes for "duty bound" referencing her loyalty to Masters whereas the fan translation goes for "catering hall" (even more so with her nickname "Kate") keeping the mansion reference from her Japanese name and the chef theme with Masters. However, I vastly prefer her fan translated name because it's so much more elegant! Her present design doesn't fit "Judy" at all but it perfectly fits "Katherine", her past self might fit but it also fits "Kate" perfectly, and I love the contrast between the two and how much of her personality gets conveyed through it. I hope her official full name is "Judith" or something similar to get a little bit of the same sentiment across.

Carmelo Gusto (for Dane Gustavia): For Gustavia's name the change isn't as drastic but still significant. His official first name is a shortened version of "caramello" which is Italian and translates to caramel referencing his candy making. "Gusto" comes from Latin "gustus" which translates to taste, very fitting considering his business and his taste issues, and doing something "with gusto" means doing it with a lot of passion which is exactly what Gustavia has for his goal of becoming the greatest pastry chef alive. His fan translated name has his last name going for the same association with taste, "Gustavia" sounds similar to "gustatory" which comes from the same Latin source. "Dane" is a reference to "danish (pastry)", the English name for a type of pastry from Denmark keeping to his pastry chef theme. I also like the interpretation of his name referencing Gustavus Swift who apparently invented the first refrigerated railroad car which is wonderfully hilarious considering what Gustavia does in the case. I don't really mind his official name, it's a good choice, but I slightly prefer the fancier sound of "Gustavia" from the fan translation.

Delicia Scone (for Delicia Scones): Not much to talk about with this one, the names are almost the same and just use her Japanese name without changing much (referencing "delicious scone" like the British quick bread). I don't think the change from "Scones" to "Scone" makes any difference and I like that both the official localisation and the fan translation chose "Delicia" as her first name, it fits her well.

Artie Frost (for Isaac Dover): The meaning of his official name is pretty obvious, "Artie" referencing his job and talent as an artist and "Frost" referencing his work with ice and his corpse being frozen. His fan translated name focuses more on the "ice" part with "Isaac Dover" being a play on "iced over" which is, again, the type of dessert he uses in the contest (sherbet) and how his corpse was hidden. I hate to repeat myself but yet again I slightly prefer his fan translated name because it sounds more serious and mature and not like a nickname. (Artie? Couldn't they at least have gone for "Artus" or something and have Delicia use "Arty" as a nickname?)

Paul Halique (for Pierre Hoquet): With this name they couldn't change around too much because the initials still had to be "PH" for the signet ring to make sense. The official localisation just used an alternate spelling of his Japanese name (Paul Holic) while the name in the fan translation doesn't have any meaning associated with it that makes sense in the game's context apart from just sounding nice. In that sense the official localisation easily wins with this one.

And now for the case names (my discussion for the new name of the first case is here):

The Captive Turnabout (for The Imprisoned Turnabout): Nothing to complain about here, "captive" and "imprisoned" mean almost the same thing. They both sound great as well, I don't prefer one over the other.

Turnabout Legacy (for The Inherited Turnabout): Wow, that official name is amazing! I love the fan translated name, don't get me wrong, and it fits but the official one has such a weight to it - Legacy - you really feel how significant this case is, to Miles in particular but also to the series as a whole. Its impact cannot be overstated and the official name absolutely does it justice. Perfect choice for one of the best cases in the entire series!

BRAD MEHLDAU with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, SHELDON CONCERT HALL, 16 NOVEMBER 2023

I got to see this venerable band virtually from drummer Jeff Ballard’s left shoulder in the second row. So great sightlines for bandmates’ smiles. Larry Grenadier had several wry smiles when they found some way to move things around; BRAD MEHLDAU’s smiles seemed more rueful—an indecisive last chord (chill, Brad, nobody noticed), modest pride at doing something exquisite which is more frequent than such smiles.

He is a formidable player with lush unexpected harmonies that even better than the remarkable things he does with melodies. The encore was Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After All These Years which, like his album of Beatles songs, takes such rich material and finds even more in them and that served as the proper confection on the evening. The closer was Here’s That Rainy Day and it too took apart a familiar song and put it back together several ways each better than the last. I very much liked their take on All The Things You Are which was by turns comfortable and surprising. I didn’t know When I Fall In Love as well but that was the other standard, depending on how you sort John Coltrane’s Satellite (a contrafact on How High The Moon and, by gad, I thought I’d broken my Name That Tune losing streak). There was plenty of jazz.

The originals developed patiently and deliberately. They don’t rush. The mood is a little bit down and there is some of that major chord thing that Ethan Iverson attributes to a Midwestern aesthetic that includes Ornette, Jarrett, Hersch, Metheny, Haden. I heard more of Jarrett in him than I imagined I would, particularly on Father Walk With Me but on his tunes that we powered by left hand/bass vamps. Befitting that approach to the piano, this rhythm section was remarkably adept at flavoring things. Grenadier was the connector. His rhythmic and harmonic solidity gave both bandmates space, both used it well but Ballard’s sonic conception was remarkable. We were close to him so yes the mix was off, but he shimmered and pulsed and accented. There was a samba in there that he used rims and cymbals as steel drums.

It is probably just awkwardness, but it’s a shame that Brad Mehldau just doesn’t seem to be enjoying the beauty he creates. I sure did.

Ethan Hawke seems to be everywhere these days: playing John Brown on the TV series The Good Lord Bird (2020) and King Aurvandil in The Northman (Robert Eggers, 2022), hiding behind a mask as the Grabber in The Black Phone (Scott Derrickson, 2022), making the double lives of Oscar Isaac's Marc Spector difficult as Arthur Harrow in Moon Knight (2022), and narrating and directing the well-received documentary series The Last Movie Stars (2022), about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Not that I'm complaining: Hawke has become one of our finest actors, able to more than hold his own in the company of a wizardly performer like Isaac, and it's good to see his energy hasn't flagged in the least. It's worth going back to watch some of his earlier films to see how he has grown as a performer, deepening his voice and gaining confidence. In Gattaca (Andrew Niccol, 1997), for example, there is still something callow and lightweight about him in comparison with his co-star Jude Law. I think he makes Ray a more credible character than Ewan McGregor, no slouch as an actor, does of the half-brother Raymond. The problem with Raymond & Ray is that it's not a movie that gives either actor much to play. It's a trifle, a would-be black comedy that isn't black enough or funny enough, depending mainly on the improbable discoveries that the mismatched half-brothers make as they uncover the secrets of their late father's life. Hawke and McGregor get good support from Maribel Verdú as the father's landlady/lover and Sophie Okenedo as the nurse who tended him as he lay dying, women privy to some of the surprise truths about his life. And the movie makes some nice hits at the insincerity behind the pieties of the funeral business. But Raymond & Ray is the kind of throwaway feature that used to be made when there was a demand to fill theater seats. The equivalent today is the film that gets a perfunctory theatrical release before swiftly heading to a streaming service, which is exactly what happened to this amusing but forgettable movie.

I absolutely despise the way Jeff Davis and the Teen Wolf writers/producers kept diminishing other characters to highlight Scott. They really had Derek claim “Lydia would never run or hide because of Scott” when 1) Derek and Lydia barely interact throughout the whole show 2) Lydia Martin has more power, charisma, personality, talent, and leadership skills in her pinky than Scott will ever have in his entire life 3) the right answer would have been “Lydia would never run or hide because of LYDIA”

Jeff tried to push his gross ‘Scott made Lydia a better woman’ narrative down our throat again using Lydia herself – LYDIA: Not all monsters do monstrous things. MEREDITH: Like who? LYDIA: Like Scott McCall. They propped Scott up at the expense of canon and of everyone else in the cheapest, most blatant case of Tell Not Show that I’ve ever seen These are the two Lydia messages? Yes? I hope so, so I’m putting them together. They started with this concept in S3a, making it blatant in the episode “The Girl Who Knew Too Much” when Lydia randomly starts telling Scott how much she trusts him to help her find a way to prevent the deaths that she keeps predicting. Then they did the whole holding hands thing, which....what? I’ll be honest, the introduction of Kira in S3B as a love interest for Scott really surprised me, because it very much looked like they were trying to build up a romance between Lydia and Scott. Jackson had just left, and we know Scott’s original desire from the start of the show was to have what Jackson had. Since Allison still wasn’t getting back together with him, Lydia would be the next best thing. And it wouldn’t be the first time that they got together while Scott was without Allison. Plus there was the storyline of her falling for the ‘bad boy’ serial killer werewolf, and how that would’ve been flipped on its head if she then dumped Aiden for being ‘bad’ and fell for Scott because he was ‘good.’ But I’m kind of off-topic. I agree that it was super frustrating. The whole show took pains to point out that the growth of literally any character had to be in some way caused by Scott. Derek couldn’t grow until he learned to let Scott take control. Stiles couldn’t grow without Scott to keep him on the ‘right’ track morality-wise. Ethan and Aiden gave up their murdering ways because Scott was so inspirational, yadda yadda yadda. When the truth is, Lydia was the way she was from the beginning. From the start, Lydia didn’t run or hide. Half the time she didn’t have the option to, because she was cornered or surprise attacked, but Lydia faced her issues head on. When she got dumped, she freaked out in the hall, and then she tried to move on. When she was called out by Allison for kissing Scott, she took it in stride. In season two, she tried to make amends with Jackson and be chill about their breakup. She didn’t hide from the other students even when she started having episodes in class. And from the fucking BEGINNING of S3, without any interaction with Scott, Lydia was fucking strong as hell. She took her own initiative in her relationships--and I STILL stand by the opinion that she never would’ve dated Aiden if someone had fucking told her what he’d done instead of her getting a tiny little glimpse when he helped kill Boyd--and she stuck by all of them when Scott got sick. She helped Stiles save Boyd, Ethan, and Isaac, and saved both Stiles and Scott in the end. Lydia has NEVER run away from her problems. Yeah, she suppressed a lot of trauma and hid her feelings from Others, but that’s not the same thing. Lydia has always been headstrong and brave loyal, and Scott has nothing to do with that.

Kristina and ethan do one and the fans eat it up. They’re beyond supportive which made grayson like the idea of you two doing it at some point. You were both pretty serious about this relationship -- you guys had been together nearly a year now, so really it was a good time to start introducing you to the channel. You really didn’t mind being in videos. At the start it was only little cameos, like making lunch by the kitchen island or walking down the hall but you loved it nonetheless. 

“camera’s ready baby” grayson said sitting down beside you. You were both sat at the kitchen island, you in a harry styles jumper and your hair in two braids that kristina did for you. Grayson (of course) was shirtless and his hair was having a major party of its own. “i’m ready when you are” you grinned making grayson lean over and peck your lips.

“so this is my girlfriend” Grayson said smiling so wide he looked over to you and bit his lip. “feels so good to finally say that” he yelled causing to break out into a fit of giggles. Grayson just knew as you were interacting with the video that the fans would adore you. And they did, as grayson would ask questions you would make funny faces or pretend to do bunny ears on gray when he wasn’t paying attention.

“how did we meet?” Grayson asked his face already heating up as the moment came back to him. you just chuckled to yourself kissing his temple. “well we met at this new cafe - cliche i know - and grayson was so cute, he came up to talk to me in the line and he was stuttering and told me his name was jeff” you laughed as grayson groaned walking out of the frame.
