Even in the Japanese version of TTYD they don't misgender Vivian anymore. Her Japanese tattle goes:

Everyone had been having a good day.

For about five minutes, litteraly every being in the zone was having a good day.

Then, the news alert had appeared.

It had happened while Vlad was on his way back home,

Blaring sirens echoing through the zone, emergency shelter doors bursting into existence. The sounds of panic and confusion quickly overwhelming the silence.

“What in the zone is going on now?” Vlad muttered to himself and he quickly made for his portal, only to stop dead in his tracks as an observant’s face- or, the projection of one- materialized from the mists, calling out in a clear, almost bored voice,

“Local child triggers apocalypse because he cheated on a test. This is not a drill. Have a good doomsday.” Before blinking out of existence.

There was a moment of true, and utter silence, before-

-Meanwhile-

Danny had been having a great day.

He had just turned in his test, and, ok, maybe the grade he would get on it wasn’t really earned, but sue him! He had been having a bloody awful week and when the answers to his problems had almost literally fallen into his hands-

So he’d turned it in and had just picked up his bag to leave when the ground began to shake. The walls, the windows, the air itself seemed to tremble as the voices of the entire collective ghost zone (PLUSE VLAD) reverberated through the dimensions:

アニメ - animated cartoons in general (incl. Western ones). anime - animated cartoons from Japan - sometimes extended to international works considered to be in a style similar to Japanese animation how to translate the English loanword back to Japanese: I wasn’t sure, but the corresponding article on Wikipedia for English ‘anime’ has the rather cumbersome title アニメ (日本のアニメーション作品) [anime (Japanese animated work)]

���画 - comics in general (incl. Western ones). sometimes a specific tradition within comics, i.e. 劇画 gekiga attempted to distinguish from 漫画 manga of the era with more serious, dramatic stories, a different drawing style etc. manga - comics from Japan - sometimes extended to imitators. other countries comics may be referred to according to their own terms e.g. manhua = Chinese comics, manhwa = Korean comics how to translate back to Japanese: 日本の漫画 (Japanese manga)

作画 - drawing, and more specifically, hand-drawn animation in general (which can be good or bad). bad animation is termed 作画崩壊 sakuga houkai. sakuga - specifically ‘good’, impressive animation. in some contexts (like ‘how do I draw sakuga’), more specifically flashy fight sequences in shōnen anime. the object of interest for ‘sakuga fandom’. how to translate back to Japanese: contextual. for ‘sakuga fandom’, 作画 works fine (c.f. sakuga wiki). for ‘good sakuga’, I’m not actually sure which specific adjective would be used. if anyone knows, I would be interested.

変態 - strange, weird, transformation. used for sexual perversion as an abbreviation of 変態性欲 (hentai seiyoku) hentai - illustrated/animated porn in an ‘anime’ style, not necessary all that ‘weird’ in content how to translate back to Japanese: エロアニメ and エロ漫画 (erotic anime and erotic manga). Ｈアニメ (here H is pronounced エッチ etchi), スケベなアニメ - both translating roughly to ‘lewd anime’. similarly for manga, VNs, etc. 18禁アニメ (R-18 anime). 成人アニメ (adult anime).

ワイフ - loanword of the English ‘wife’. waifu - used in English-language fandom, particularly imageboard-adjacent, to describe a favourite fictional character who’s an object of special devotion and attraction, but usually with a strong element of irony. (this is therefore a loanword of a loanword back into its source language with a different meaning!) how to translate back to Japanese: @kbnet writes: The best equivalent is 嫁, but they don't use it as lightly as we use "waifu." + a good situational translation of "waifu" for vtubers, idols, or seiyuu could be 推し – or 神推し for your very favorite.

メカ - abbreviation of メカニック mekanikku, as in for example メカニックデザイン. mechanical things in general. a mecha designer on an anime might be as likely to design a bike as a giant robot. mecha or mech - a large, typically humanoid robot, usually piloted from inside and used in combat. the subgenre of anime featuring such robots is called ‘mecha anime’ by English-speaking fans. sometimes extended to phrases like ‘mech suit’. how to translate back to Japanese: ロボット robotto is used to refer to robots. ロボットアニメ robotto anime is used to refer to what English speakers call ‘mecha anime’, and メカアニメ would be considered a foreign term.

少し - adjective: ‘a small amount of’. a skosh - noun, a small amount. thanks to @mystacoceti for pointing out this one! how to translate back into Japanese: describe what it’s a small amount of.

any more like this? none are leaping to mind just yet. sayonara in English also means ‘goodbye with a note of finality’ with a connotation of like, hey look at me I’m speaking Japanese, but it’s still not that far from the original.

The Wonders of Nature can Beckon the Youngest of Minds

You know, even as 19 year old me has become technologically obsessed par the course of this, I’ve always had a fascination to the outdoors to where I would call nature a friend and a character in its own right. Which is why when I see or play media that takes place in a luscious, quiet outdoor world, best ex. Breath of the Wild, I feel a bit at ease and immersed in the simple yet varied beauty that lies before me. So when I see Hilda, based on the comic with the same style and look to it, I can’t help but feel relieved and joyous of this honest “feel good” series.

With a cuddly deerfox as the cherry on top like... yes

Now, the animation... it's BOSS. It’s only honestly the first cartoon I’ve seen where the drab colors make it pop the most. The fact that it captures both the muted fall color palette and the etchy character lining from the books are one thing, with the character designs looking softer than the books which is a great touch, but having Mercury Filmworks animate this season brings a tear to my good eye. I will keep saying this, Mercury is the best company to go to when you want a cartoon to feel animated, and this is no exception. It has the perfect blend of snap and jump to it, and the first episode was enough to keep me watching. You gotta see it to believe it.

I especially love the grand scale it gives from time to time, really giving you the ‘wide’ in ‘wide world’

Speaking of first episodes, let it be said that the tone or mood of the first can set things for the rest of a season and I love the tone Hilda has for itself. Serene, peaceful, sometimes somber, with a looming sense of mystery hiding underneath. The first seven minutes of the season captures the whole season in a way that if you removed the dialogue, it would be a perfect example of visual storytelling, something I’ve grown to love in the 5+ years of being a cartoon reviewer.

Just saying, “a picture’s worth a thousand words” isn’t some deplorable artistic idiom

But really, what can I say about this series that I haven’t already said about True and the Rainbow Kingdom? (coincidentally both Netflix shows) I mean I could go on about how surreal it can be or how it has those tender moments or how it’s “Gravity Falls meets Over the Garden Wall” like I’m a simple ass normie, but pbbt. Of all the hyperactive or zany stuff I’ve seen this year, it’s just nice to have that one series like this where you can relax with what you’re watching. It’s simple folklore filled adventures with a girl, her friend, and her deerfox companion, what else is needed? Not to mention, like Gary and his Demons, it felt complete. I could applaud for a season two, but I don’t feel it’s necessary; as an adaptation, it did its job superbly and I’m fine with it either continuing or stopping after one.

Tho as long as Mercury’s still on board, I would be down for a season 2

Like True, I just…felt at peace, happy watching this, and this happiness resonated with me and it’s something I feel everyone should know and hold dear. This show is ‘peaceful’ in every sense of the word. This lifted my spirits in a way that feels refreshing and for the fall season, I say Hilda provided the necessary starting point and is a great, timeless seasonal series worth remembering and watching.
