Chapter 12: Scream Queens & Kings

The next day, Luke woke up with a feeling as if he had forgotten something very important and he knew it was related to the supposed conclusion of the UBrite case. The first thing his mind remembered as soon as he woke up was Richard's stolen kiss which, in his words, was an appropriate farewell for them and Luke couldn't be a hypocrite in saying he hadn't liked it. To contradict his mind, he brought the Tartosian's selfie to the surface and the detective found himself laughing, still hugging the pillow. He was relieved to wake up with that spiral of thoughts more than the ones he had been having. And once again, the feeling that something was missing returned. While taking a shower, Luke thought about what he would do that day, starting with a visit to Julia, who had already woken up and was stable. Then he would talk to the police officers who found the alleged evidence in the house where Blake was, who was still missing and consequently became the focus of the media as an alleged helper of the sadistic Demetrius Troyer who drank the blood of his victims. He would try to contact Dominic Ward again and ask more questions about his affair with Troy and his alleged presence at the Forgotten Hollow Horror Tour at the time his cousin was present. Luke remembered very well the nightmare the influencer had spoken about being chased by a sinister city, and if the detective managed to solve everything without drawing Richard's attention, he would finish with a visit to Luca, who had sent him a message in the early hours of the morning saying that she wanted to meet him as soon as possible. And so the redhead began his day, thinking of the last part as a prize.

Even with the reporters' insistence on Luca and Riccardo, they preferred to finish college on campus. Luca no longer gave interviews at the suggestion of his father and lawyer who were still suing Sierra. The Tartosian always said the same phrase in a dramatic tone before getting into the car, when the reporters ran up to him: "You will know my version, after you read my book." Unlike Riccardo, who simply ignored them. The news only talked about the arrest of Demetrius Troyer and his supposed assistant Lionel Blake, and the contrast to all this was the future book that Luca had promised so much.

…With the end of the curfew, Will was able to attend more meetings of the Order of Enchantment, learn more about how to please the Spirits and get to know the members better, such as Ruth, Lars, Myra and the newcomer Regina, who Will was shocked to learn about. The leader, Reece Mayfield, took possession of Blake's old podcast, which planted evidence in the house by placing Esther's old costume and dagger, and began calling it The Order of Enchantment and talked about second chances and starting over, while the true creator remained missing and hunted by the police.

…Which took Detective Luke by surprise when, after speaking to Julia at the hospital and making sure she didn't remember her tormentor's face and also speaking to the police officers who found the evidence at the house where Lionel was, who stated that Reece revealed that he had been finding Lionel too suspicious since he saw him quickly hiding things when he arrived at the dormitory they shared.

…Dominic breathed a sigh of relief after getting into the taxi on the way to the airport, where he caught his family's jet and returned home. He just didn't expect that as soon as he set foot in Windenburg Castle, where he lived, his father wouldn't welcome him with all the love and affection he had imagined. Dominic's concern would no longer be recovering the sponsorships he had lost when he was considered a suspect in the case, but how he would live without all the perks he received from his parents.

…In the short time they were together, Luke imagined himself in a relationship with the actor and him having a normal life, perhaps as a personal security guard with benefits. Pushing those thoughts away, Luke said goodbye to his affair with a kiss and returned to the police station as if he was floating.

Luca and his cousin finished college, and Riccardo began helping his grandfather manage the famous line of fancy restaurants “Gatti’s” and later Luca returned to study Languages ​​and Literature - but at a distance - and finally released his book entitled “Scream Queens & Kings” which he dedicated to the victims and detailed facts about the UBrite case. The actor even addressed his relationship with the detective and the book became number one in sales. The book became Luke’s favorite, who managed to solve the StrangerVille case in time to return and get an autograph from Luca during the book’s promotion, which praised the redhead and his skills…

REIMAGINATION: CHAPTER 2

Summary: A dark reinterpretation of the events of the Mr. Hopp's Playhouse series.

Chapter summary: Esther Mayfield has been having nightmares for weeks. Her intuition won't stop warning her something bad is happening this Christmas.

Esther Mayfield hadn't realized she was screaming until she stopped.

Her lungs were burning like she'd been inhaling ash, and despite it being (a terribly snowless) winter, she had once again found herself kicking off her blanket, sweating, and unconsciously tugging at her pajamas in an attempt to cool herself down. For well over a week now, Esther had been practically waking up in a pool of her own sweat somewhere between 2 and 4 in the morning every single night, and waking up every child in the Blacklands Manor Orphanage with her. Out of the corner of her blurry vision, she saw another girl bury her face in her hands- disappointed and annoyed, no doubt.

"Esther!" Molly Caswell chided, green eyes narrowing. She felt like burying her face in her own hands, too, just to hide from the embarrassment and Molly's piercing gaze. "We are trying to sleep!"

"I'm sorry," Esther murmured. "I don't mean to be disturbing everyone."

"Well, you are!" Molly pushed. "We need our beauty sleep!"

Esther snorted, despite herself, at Molly's accidental self-sabotage. "Yeah, you do."

"Ugh! Esther, you are just the worst!"

"Now you're keeping us up, Molly!" Isaac Nguyen chimed in. "Everyone just stop trying to make each other mad and let's go back to sleep."

Grumbling something about obvious favoritism, Molly conceded, burying her face under her blanket again. A few sighs echoed throughout the room, and most of the other children contently returned to bed.

Not Esther, though. Esther wasn't going to risk another nightmare. She wasn't going back to sleep.

Well, she wasn't sure at what point she fell back asleep, but it had obviously happened, because she awoke a few hours later to a knock at the bedroom door.

"Breakfast is ready!" A voice that Esther was just a little too groggy to recognize called. She nodded and mumbled something in response, as though the woman was speaking only to her and not to a room of twenty-four children, and began to push herself out of bed.

In one of the bathrooms- though she didn't suppose it mattered that much if she changed in the bedroom, it still felt terribly inappropriate- Esther abandoned her stiflingly hot pajamas for something more comfortable and appropriate- a purple dress and matching headband, clean white socks, and her rosary necklace. The necklace was much less comfortable, but far more appropriate, and Esther knew she would be punished for "refusing" to show her faith. She'd had this rosary for as long as she could remember, anyway- her story had always been that it was the only thing her mother left her with, true or not.

She brushed a few loose strands of her ashy brown curls that simply refused to be caught by the headband out of her face and behind one ear to the best of her ability, collected her old pajamas, and returned to the bedroom. She knew she should fold the clothes before she put them back in her drawer, but that was the least of her worries. Half-heartedly shoving them in would do for now.

Probably.

“Esther, you woke us all up again!”

Esther sighed, preparing herself for another repeat of the same barrage of complaints she’d been getting every day for the past two weeks. “I’m sorry, Molly,” She said, as if that was going to prevent it.

“Did you have a bad dream again?”

The empathy behind the question would have been surprising if she’d thought for even a second it had been Molly who had asked. Instead, when she turned back from her dresser, there was Isaac Nguyen right behind Molly, looking at her with concern.

Esther sighed again, not annoyance this time but defeat.

“It’s not just a bad dream, Isaac,” She complained. “It’s the same dream every night, and it’s horrible.”

Even the mention of it was too much. She squeezed her eyes shut, scrunching up her face to try to rid her mind of the image of the screaming girl, skin bubbling and sloughing off, eyelids melted shut, drooling helplessly as her body tried to create any protection against the heat of the fire that surrounded her, baking her alive like an animal to be eaten.

“Maybe it means something?” He offered.

“What could it mean?”

“Maybe it means you’re going crazy,” Molly quipped. “And you’ll make the rest of us crazy too if you don’t stop waking us up!”

“I am not crazy, Molly!” Esther cried. “I don’t want to talk about this right now, okay? Maybe after breakfast.”

“In that case, we’d better hurry up,” Isaac added, seeming more than ready to end this argument. “It’s now or never when Sister Beverly is feeding us!”

Esther snorted, again. “Either you eat now, or you don’t eat!” She mocked in her best impression of the old nun’s raspy voice. “You’re lucky you even have food on your plate! If you don’t like it, you can just go to bed hungry!”

Molly laughed too this time, and despite their constant clashing, Esther felt a lightness in her chest hearing Molly laugh her jokes. The same way she felt when Isaac reached out to her. That light, easy feeling of friendship and comfort was rare here, for Esther, but finding it always came with an extra twinge of pride. The thought of the nightmare seemed to set itself aside for now.

“Come on, you two!” Isaac grinned, waving them toward the door. “I’m starving!”

The trio hurried down the stairs toward the dining room, and the smell of cooked eggs grew as they ran. Esther loved eggs. She was never a picky kid, but no matter what she disliked, she’d never turn down anything with eggs. It was just a quirk of hers- the way that Isaac always ate so fast he almost choked, or Molly was prone to take anyone’s leftovers (often without asking), Esther was always certain to eat without problems as long as she was given eggs.

Three plates carrying quiche slices remained by the time they made it to the dining room. They were spaced out oddly, as the other kids obviously hadn’t considered where the absentees would want to sit, but after a bit of complaining, the trio conceded and split up to eat their breakfast in solitude.

Now without her friends, it was a bit hard to enjoy her food without her mind crawling back to that dream. The way the girl’s skin bubbled and peeled remained in Esther’s mind. Her screams-

Not that it mattered. Esther pointedly took another bite of quiche. It wasn’t real. Everyone had bad dreams from time to time. That wasn’t cause for concern.

“Esther!”

Molly said her name a bit too cheerfully for Esther’s liking. She glanced at her suspiciously. Fork in hand. Bad sign.

“Yes, Molly?”

“You’re not going to eat all of the rest of that, are you?”

As expected, as Molly spoke, her fork reached down to Esther’s place, ready to steal a piece of Esther’s food.

“Hey!” Esther swung her fork, knocking Molly’s out of the way. “Molly, I’m not finished!”

“I was only going to take a little bite!” Molly cried.

Esther glanced up again.

“You may have one bite, Molly.”

“Oh, thank you!” Molly lunged forward, throwing her arms around Esther as she grabbed a bite that was just too-big enough to get on Esther’s nerves. “You’re the best friend in the whole world, Esther!”

“I’m sure you can imagine what she said to me when I ate too fast for her to steal from me,” Isaac remarked.

Esther smiled, again. A bit less so this time. Even as she forced herself to finish what was usually her favorite meal, its aftertaste was bitter in her mouth. Something was wrong today. She wasn’t sure what.

Her suspicions were confirmed when Sister Beverly cleared her throat loudly.

“Children, in the spirit of the upcoming Christmas, some members of our local church have come together to give you all something special.” Even when sharing what sounded like it was meant to be good news, Sister Beverly still sounded condescending and bitter. “Matron Ruth will hand out toys from the donations now. There will be no crying and no complaints. If these toys are left on the floor outside the bedroom, they will be thrown in the trash. If it becomes a disturbance, I will keep it in the staff wing and you will not see it. If you whine about the toy you were graciously given, they will all be thrown away. No one needed to give you these gifts. You had better not ask for something better.”

Any excitement Esther had felt at the prospect of new playthings was immediately taken away by Sister Beverly’s harsh rules. She was quite good at that.

Molly, however, was not so disappointed. She clasped her hands together joyfully. “New toys!”

Esther vaguely watched the others’ gifts. Eerie new girl Desdemona (Dessie for short) had received some kind of cloth doll. Rambunctious American immigrant Billy had gotten a football. Triplets Anna, Maria and Linda had gotten hand puppets. On and on, Esther’s eyes followed excited housemate after excited housemate being handed baby dolls, toy trains, stuffed animals, so on and so forth. She barely even paid attention to Molly’s stuffed panda and Isaac’s already well-worn tiger.

It wasn’t until a toy was placed in front of her that she was snapped out of her haze.

It was a rabbit; grotesque looking, in an odd sort of way. Mostly grey cloth, it sat at about ten inches tall- which struck Esther as just slightly abnormally large for a stuffed animal of its type. Its torso was far too firm and hard to hug, with an obvious plastic box placed inside. Around the back, she found a small ring attached to a thread. A music box. An odd choice for a stuffed animal like this. And its face…

In the center of its oddly shaped head, cheeks far too full to resemble a real bunny, was a plastic face. Smile lines and dimples were molded into the plastic, but the small crevice it had for a mouth had obviously been painted in. Its eyes were yellow, pointed in starkly opposite directions, and its pupils were horizontal, slanted like a goat’s.

“Oh! How adorable!” Molly cooed. “He’ll be best friends with Miss Bo and Mr. Stripes!”

Esther just nodded along, knowing she was probably supposed to know who Miss Bo and Mr. Stripes were.

“What’s his name?”

“Um, Mr. Hopp,” Esther replied dumbly as her brain barely managed to string together the quickest combination of the last piece of information she’d taken in- Mr. Stripes- and the fact that Mr. Hopp was obviously meant to be a rabbit that it could. Stupid name, absolutely terrible, but there was no taking it back. She had to be in the moment. Not say anything about this rabbit reminding her of that dream that had woken her up screaming every night for weeks.

She barely remembered to mumble out a thank you, ma’am before Matron Ruth could decide she didn’t want the toy after all and take it back, so dumbfounded by this thing that had just been placed in front of her that all she could do was stare. She had to force herself to blink.

When she did, Mr. Hopp blinked back.

E mais uma vez, a sensação de que faltava algo voltou. Enquanto tomava banho, Luke pensava o que faria naquele dia começando com uma visita à Julia, que já acordara e estava estável, depois falaria com os policiais que acharam as supostas provas na casa onde Blake estava, que ainda estava desaparecido e consequentemente se tornara o foco da mídia como suposto ajudante do sádico Demetrius Troyer que bebia o sangue de suas vítimas, tentaria entrar em contato novamente com Dominic Ward e fazer mais perguntas sobre o caso dele com Troy e sua suposta presença no Tour do Terror em Forgotten Hollow na época em que seu primo estava presente, Luke se lembrava muito bem do pesadelo que o influenciador falara sobre estar sendo perseguido por uma cidade sinistra e se o detetive conseguisse resolver tudo sem chamar a atenção de Richard, ele terminaria com uma visita à Luca, que lhe mandara uma mensagem na madrugada dizendo que queria encontra-lo o quanto antes. E assim o ruivo começou seu dia, pensando na última parte como um prêmio.

Mesmo com as insistências dos repórteres em cima de Luca e Riccardo, eles preferiram terminar a faculdade no campus. Luca não dava mais entrevistas por sugestão de seu pai e advogado que ainda processavam Sierra, o tartosiano sempre dizia a mesma frase em tom dramático antes de entrar no carro, quando os repórteres corriam até ele: "Vocês saberão a minha versão, depois de lerem meu livro." Diferente de Riccardo que apenas os ignorava. Os noticiários só falavam da prisão de Demetrius Troyer e seu suposto ajudante Lionel Blake e o contraste de tudo isso, era o futuro livro que Luca tanto prometia.

…Com o fim do toque de recolher, Will pôde frequentar mais reuniões da Ordem do Encantamento, aprender mais a agradar os Espíritos e conhecer melhor os integrantes como Ruth, Lars, Myra e a recém chegada Regina, a qual Will se chocou ao saber. O líder, Reece Mayfield, tomou posse do antigo podcast de Blake, o qual implantou provas na casa colocando o antigo traje e a adaga de Esther, e começou a chama-lo de A Ordem do Encantamento e falava sobre segundas chances e recomeço, enquanto o verdadeiro criador continuava desaparecido e caçado pela polícia.

…O que pegou o detetive Luke de surpresa quando, depois de falar com Julia no hospital e certificar de que ela não se lembrava do rosto de seu algoz e também falar com os policiais que acharam as provas na casa onde Lionel estava, os quais afirmaram que Reece revelou que estava achando Lionel suspeito demais desde que o viu escondendo as coisas rápido quando ele chegava no dormitório que dividiam.

…Dominic respirava aliviado depois que entrara no táxi a caminho do aeroporto, onde pegou o jatinho de sua família e voltou para casa. Ele só não esperava que assim que pisasse os pés no Castelo de Windenburg, onde vivia, seu pai não o receberia com todo amor e carinho que imaginou. A preocupação de Dominic já não seria mais recuperar os patrocínios que perdera quando foi considerado suspeito no caso, mas como viveria sem todas as regalias que recebia dos pais.

…No pouco tempo em que ficaram agarrados, Luke se imaginou num relacionamento com o ator e ele tendo uma vida comum, talvez como um segurança pessoal com benefícios, afastando aqueles pensamentos, Luke se despediu de seu affair com um beijo e voltou para a delegacia como se tivesse flutuando.

Luca e seu primo terminaram a faculdade, sendo que Riccardo começou a ajudar seu avô na gerência da famosa linha de restaurantes granfinos "Gatti's" e mais tarde Luca voltou para cursar Letras e Literatura - mas a distância - e finalmente lançou seu livro intitulado "Scream Queens & Kings" o qual dedicou para as vítimas e detalhava fatos do caso UBrite, o ator chegou a abordar o relacionamento dele com o detetive e o livro ficou em primeiro lugar nas vendas. O livro se tornou o favorito de Luke, que conseguira resolver o caso de StrangerVille a tempo de voltar e conseguir pegar um autógrafo de Luca durante a divulgação do livro, o qual enaltecia o ruivo e suas habilidades…

Gabe consolidou sua carreira de modelo e manteve uma amizade forte com Luca, sendo considerado um dos melhores amigos no famoso 'Squad' do tartosiano e não demorou para se tornar uma celebridade A-List assim como Luca e seu 'Squad'.
