"Seemingly inconsequential moments that nonetheless alter the trajectory of future events."

ONE SERENDIPITOUS MEETING is all it took for Esperanza and João to become tied to each other forever. A year after that first meeting, they suddenly find themselves back in each other's lives again, something which they once believed would have been impossible. With each closed door, they seem to find another opening to bigger and better things — back to each other.

hi guys! i’ve been wanting to write a joão fic for ages but i never really had the motivation, until he moved to chels (i’m a chelsea fan btw, and yes i am depressed). so here it is! there are hardly any good joão fics and it really annoys me bc he’s literally the love of my life 😭 i know i definitely won’t be the only one who’s frustrated about the lack of joão content, so for all those people, i hope this fic makes up for it!
i’m currently in my gcse year at school, so updates probably won’t be frequent sorry! i have to revise unfortunately 😒 but as soon as i leave school in summer i’ll be writing pretty much every day. i’m so excited i have so many ideas for this fic 🤭
anyway, i hope you enjoy reading sliding doors! please don’t be a ghost reader, if you enjoy, a like or a reblog would mean a lot to me ❤️ happy reading!

Re: technology being great:
When I was in Spain on the Camino, I stopped at the winery outside of Estella that has a wine spigot for pilgrims.
When I got there I pulled out my phone and sent a message to the group chat asking if anyone was awake and sent the link
Because the winery has an old-school webcam!!
I got to wave at loved ones from Spain! How cool is that!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only thing better was video-calling my partner from the square in front of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela the day after I arrived!
Like. I talked to someone on the other side of the planet. On video. While sitting outdoors in a square surrounded by centuries-old buildings. :O
Sometimes I love our interconnected world.
A few weeks ago, I saw a picture on the BBC website of an adorable manatee mother and child. I loved it, and I wondered if I could get a print. I looked up the credited photographer, and found him at his university. I emailed a query.
He emailed back from a different address saying that he keeps his photography and his employment income separate. (Excellent work, good job, sir!) He said he DOES sell prints. He has them custom printed by a museum-quality print shop, and that I could have basically any size I wanted.
So I said yes, absolutely! How can I pay you?
He replied that he usually sends the print out first and if the customer is satisfied he sends an invoice. He also noted that communication might be spotty because he is on a photoshoot of endangered animals IN THE FUCKING AMAZON.
I said absolutely no problem are you fucking kidding me. The print arrived today, it is gorgeous, stunning, absolutely museum quality. He is going to email me the invoice tomorrow if his internet holds out because UPRIVER IN THE AMAZON.
So I, in Minnesota, ordered a print from a researcher in Florida that I saw on the BBC that was printed for me in Washington D.C. and the invoice is being emailed to me from the Amazon.
Whenever I feel down about the dystopian nature of the planet, I think about shit like this.
Humans can be pretty goddamn great, and so can technology.

Run Forrest, Run! Tales from the San Fermín Festival
Week 8
With only two more weeks left in my program, I'm already feeling sad about having to leave soon. I like the routine I have with work, I know old town like the back of my hand, and most importantly I'm never let down by my favorite spot for icecream (shoutout Boulevard!). Like the true San Sebastián local that I am, I did a mix of things around the city this week. There's a really cool building called the Tabakalera right by the river and train station that I ended up visiting several times. It used to be a tobacco factory but has now been converted into a cultural center which features exhibitions from local artists, a library, co-working spaces, gastronomy lab, and beautiful view of the city skyline from the top floor. When I was there working on a drawing, I met a woman named Rosalia who does illustrations in her free time. She had something like 60+ drawings on procreate of her comics, and we had a really nice conversation about our shared hobby and how she plans to publish a book of her work in the fall! She also complimented my spanish which really made my day, and I plan to keep in touch with her :).
Tumblr media
The main lobby of the Tabakalera! I could spend hours here (more than I already have)
Passing time in Pasaia
Later on in the week, Jayashree, Deidra, and I embarked on a hike from San Sebastián to Pasaia which was around 3 hours total. There was an elevation gain so it was neat to see the city from that vantage point, and the walking itself went pretty smoothly. The trail is part of one of the routes for Camino de Santiago so we crossed paths with some backpackers and had the markings on the trees to guide us. We saw an abandoned fort, cliffsides, bunches of hydrangeas, and a fortress! Sadly could not go up since the path was blocked off. Sorry Rapunzel, we're unfortunately not your rescue crew. There was also a suspicious looking bridge that Jayashree bravely crossed and Deidra slapped a random plant on her arm, but besides that, we all made it out alive. The last time I was in Pasaia I had been stranded with the Penn State kids so this really was a trip down memory/nightmare lane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jayashree really does not have an ounce of fear in her body. Can't be seen as well from this pic but the drop from the bridge was pretty steep
Knights of the Wine Table
On Saturday our advisors from the university organized a daytrip for us to a small town called Estella, a monastery, and wine tasting tour at Bodegas Monjardín. We weren't in Estella for very long, but it's special due to having a lot of centuries old medieval architecture. Near the river, we found a super angled bridge (pretty much in the shape of a triangle) which I don't know why it was built that way but interesting nonetheless. The monastery was very intricately designed and had also clearly seen many seasons. Oddly enough, it featured a wine fountain and I have to say that it didn't taste half bad. For an official rating from a self-proclaimed amateur wine enthusiast, 6.5/10 taste and 8/10 experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, onto the wine tasting. When we first got there, we were welcomed with a glass of the Monjardín rosado and given an introduction to the history of the winery. Everything was in spanish so I really got some listening practice in, but for my friends in the group who didn't know it they just had to rely on catching keywords lol. It was interesting to hear about the fermentation processes and methods of how to make the different wines, such as chardonnay, roble, espumoso etc. In the storehouse area, we got to see some bottles older than us, along with some random taxidermized boar heads. We were then led into a room where the tour guide gave us a spread of bread, cheese, walnuts, olive oil, and two wines to try. It's safe to say that all of us thought the wine was really strong, but Izzy and I made a valiant effort to finish our glasses. At the end of our tour, we left with high spirits for sure.

Dazed and Crazed in Pamplona
Sunday was the last day for the Running of the Bulls festival in the city of Pamplona. In order to watch, and for my friends who wanted to actually run with them, we had to get there absurdly early. Took the 5 am bus to get there around 6, and stepping out of that bus station felt like entering a separate reality. It was like literal Gotham City or some sort of apocalyptic fallout wasteland with the amount of people passed out, still wandering around drunk from last night's party, and in general just being creatures of the night. Along with that, there was a very noticeable stench wafting through the streets. The best way that I can describe it is an unholy combination of trash, alcohol, smoke, garbage, and pee. One of those smells that you just really can't forget no matter how hard you try (and I've tried). When we made it to the route where the running would take place, I split up from Mateo, Jayashree, Riky, and Ian to claim a spot at the barricade so that I could have a good view. I was on Calle Santo Domingo right across from the town hall, which is one of the first areas that the encierro (running) takes place at. The full route is 875 meters long, and goes straight to the arena as the ending point. My friends were posted up closer to the end so that they could run into the arena and try to juke out the bulls so I unfortunately couldn't watch them. However, being front and center on the fence was very worthwhile since I was able to clearly see the bulls and people run past. It was quite the experience seeing guys do their stretching routines, bless themselves, and throw up right before it all started. Take a look at my POV below:
Tumblr media
The runners prepare for battle...
Corre, Corre!
You might be wondering why so many people are wearing the exact same clothes. That's because the official colors of the festival are red and white and you would really stick out if you wore something different. Traditionally, runners usually wear the pañuelo (red bandana) along with the fajín (red sash). However, you don't have to be a runner for that and it's encouraged to wear the full garb. I really ended up taking this to heart and started out with just one of the bandana and sash each, but came out with 3 bandanas and 2 sashes. I fully evolved in the spirit of San Fermín!
Tumblr media
The fit is fireeeeeee
I met up with my friends after the events ended in the arena and luckily all of them ended up being okay. Riky got his shirt torn and his side kind of cut by the bull's horn, Mateo saw a guy get trampled behind him as he was running, and Jayashree got pushed into the barricade (and came out unscathed but with someone else's blood on her shirt). I have so much respect for them because I know that I would've ended up worse if I did that. After walking along the streets, seeing some shops, and getting a quick bite to eat, all of us were super exhausted. For a little bit we went to a park and just laid down in the grass to pass the time while waiting for our bus to get there. To summarize this undoubtedly crazy experience, I enjoyed getting to be a part of the festival and see the famous encierro!

personally, I believe that classical literature books have a lot of LGBT+ subtext
like, great expectations? philip was in love with both estella and herbert
besy? pyotr most clearly had quite the obsession and love for nikolai, there was nothing hidden there
les miserables? courfeyrac and marius were boyfriends, the classic “oh my god, they were roommates” thing
dom casmurro? bentinho was completely obsessed for escobar and, even more, was rotten in love with the guy; what he had was envy of capitu and jealousy of escobar

Sept 12 - Los Arcos, 21 km
Last night I stayed at Alda Estella Hostel. Just 4 people in a room but with a shared men's bathroom for the whole floor. Otherwise clean and located in the old town. Close to lots of restaurants. Unfortunately I had 1 of my 2 t-shirts taken from the clothes line. Maybe I'll wear a t-shirt one day and go without the second?? Recommended based on location and cleanliness.
Once again a hill as I left town. Up 300 m and then back down into Los Arcos. At about 2.5 km out of town I was pleasantly distracted by a wine fountain. After climbing for about 2 hours I stopped for a coffee in Azqueta and reapplied foot balm. Continuously drying my feet and reapply for balm is critcal in managing foot pain and blisters.
Most of the day was spent walking in open fields. It was a 30 degrees and tiring. I needed to have a couple stops to rest my overheated feet and enjoy a snack. I shared my wine from the wine fountain with other pilgrims. Today I was their personal jesus, providing wine with their bread.
I arrived in Los Arcos at about 2 pm and checked into my pension. Time for a shower and to wash ymy soaking and stinking clothes, then enjoy a beer in the plaza. Today I learned a new term "Good Smellers". This refers to people that pay to have someone transport their backpacks so that they don't have to carry them and stink.
Los Arcos is a quaint old town with beautiful old buildings, an old church and horrible food (the worst so far). Dinner was an impromptu meeting of English, Scotish, Korean, Dutch, Danish, and Canadian pilgrims. We shared bad food, good wine, and some laughs.

You laughed as you watched Frankie dance. Dancing had never really been his strong suit. He loved to do it, but he wasn’t the best.
“Jesus Christ, pendejo,” Santi muttered taking in the scene. He had just come home to find you on the couch with your baby girl, Estella and Frankie dancing around the living room to ‘Feliz Navidad’.
“What?” Frankie asked. He stopped dancing to face Santi.
“How the fuck are you still such a terrible dancer?” Santi asked with a grin.
“I’m not that bad,” Frankie argued.
“You’re terrible,” Santi reiterated.
“I was dancing for Estella,” Frankie pouted.
“Well, move and let me show her how it should be done,” Santi insisted. “Can’t have her learning your moves. She’s lucky one of her dads knows how to dance.”
“She’s lucky one of her dads is good looking,” Frankie said.
“Yeah, that would be me too,” Santi laughed. Frankie just shook his head.
“Essy loves my dancing,” Frankie said, crossing his arms.
“That’s because she doesn’t know any better,” Santi laughed. He turned to their angel. “What do you think, Estella? Who’s better at dancing? Daddy or Papí?”
“Mama!” Estella laughed in delight, clapping her chubby hands together. You laughed and hugged her close.
“Looks like I’m the best dancer,” you said.
“You’re almost as bad as Frankie,” Santi teased. You scoffed and stood up, holding Estella on your hip.
“That sounds like a challenge,” you said with a playful scowl.
“Let’s do this then,” Santi replied. Frankie turned up the volume and the three of you started dancing around the room, singing at the top of your lungs. Estella laughed and danced in your arms. Santi really was a good dancer. You and Frankie…well, you at least looked like you were having a blast. By the time the song was over you were all breathless and laughing.
“That was fun,” Frankie huffed. You nodded in agreement. “What about you, Essy? Did you have fun.” The one and a half year old nodded.
“Dada, up,” she demanded, reaching for Frankie. Frankie gladly snatched her away from you and cover her in kisses. She squealed in delight.
“Papa, up,” she put her arms towards Santi. Santi pulled her into his arms, hugged her tight, and kissed her head.
“I missed you today, princesa,” he whispered against her dark curls. “Where you a good girl for mommy and daddy?” She nodded, a solemn look on her beautiful little face.
“Me good,” she promised.
“That’s my girl,” Santi said with a smile. “You hungry?”
“Nuggies!” She screamed. You laughed and shook your head.
“You can’t live off chicken nuggets,” you told your daughter.
“Nuggies,” she insisted.
“Alright, alright,” Frankie relented. “Nuggets it is.” You sighed at your boys. Estella had them wrapped around her little finger. Santi placed her down in her gated play area and walked back over to you and Frankie.
“Hey, baby,” he said softly. He pulled you into his arms and kissed you. “Sorry I didn’t greet you properly when I got home.” He pulled away and turned to Frankie. “Got distracted by this one over here.”
“Sorry you can’t keep your eyes off my sexy ass,” Frankie smirked. Santi rolled his eyes and pulled him in for a kiss.
“Don’t get a big head,” Santi warned. “You may be a sexy motherfucker, but you still can’t dance for shit. Do you even know how to move your hips?”
“I move my hips just fine when it counts,” Frankie said hotly. Santi groaned and you felt your core clench. Frankie definitely knew how to work those hips where it mattered.
“Will you two knock it off and help me make dinner?” You cut in. If your conversation kept going down the path it was on, you would all end up naked and Essy wouldn’t get her nuggets for at least another hour.
“You got it, babe,” Frankie said. You started walking towards the kitchen.
“You know,” Santi said thoughtfully, “even though you two aren’t the best dancers, it’s still hot as hell watching you.”
“Really?” You asked over your shoulder.
“Yeah,” Santi replied. “I’ll watch you shake that gorgeous ass any day.” He turned and smacked Frankie’s ass. “You too, hot stuff.” Frankie laughed and put Santi into a headlock.
“Behave boys,” you warned. Essy was starting to copy everything she saw. The last thing you needed was your baby girl slapping people on the ass and putting them in a headlock.
“Sorry,” Frankie said sheepishly. He released Santi and followed you into the kitchen.
“Let’s make Essy her nuggets, and then we can teach her some more dance moves,” Santi said.
“Sounds good to me,” Frankie agreed. You smiled at your unconventional little family. Most people didn’t understand it, but it was absolute paradise for all of you. You sighed in contentment as you pulled the chicken nuggets out of the freezer. Never in your wildest dreams had you ever thought you’d be lucky enough to have one, let alone, two amazing men like Santi and Frankie. They were the best dads and husbands a girl could ever ask for.
