My headcanon is that he's from an elite tribe of chameleon ninjas with extremely high standards, but was actually not great at being a ninja (only compared to their standards because they're unreasonable), and so he ended up striking out on his own because he didn't feel like he was good enough and to sort of prove himself.
And then he met Vector who was like "you know what your family sounds like jerks you're my kid now actually" and now he's slowly unlearning his unhealthy perfectionist mindset.
