the way some of you treat sevika is a bit sad, I know she's unbearably hot, but she's way more than just smut, tough girls deserve to cry, be taken care of, be emotional, cuddle, and not just be your knight in shining armor

So if I were to take away from this moment something deeper than “man Sevika's a freak”, I'd point out that we've seen the same tactic not long before.
Tumblr media
What does this say about Caitlyn? She's fighting dirty. She's fighting like a cornered rat. She's fighting like a Zaunite.
And first of all there's hypocrisy. Caitlyn's been calling these people animals and monsters and whatnot but when placed in an identical situation she responds identically. Case in point: getting so mad at Jinx for terrorizing people out of grief that she goes ahead and starts to terrorize people out of grief. Sevika's expression afterwards is mostly “joke's on you I'm into that” but there's some surprise there too — you wouldn't expect that move from a Piltie.
Then there's desperation. Because she needs revenge; she needs it or she'll never ever forgive herself for what happened. So she'll throw away her morals and her dignity and just do whatever it takes to achieve the goal, whether it means chomping on someone like a feral raccoon or becoming a military dictator… which puts her in the same mindset as Zaunites, all of whom are desperate to survive and a lot of whom could never afford morals and dignity in the first place.

also it seems like a giant fuck you to introduce sevika as someone who is tired of playing nice with piltover and wants zaun to defend itself and then narratively punish her for it over and over. she loses her arm repeatedly. she loses nearly every fight. she’s never happy. everyone close to her dies brutally and nobody even tells her. her community does not respect her. she is ignored every time she tries to rally her community and make change. she does not want to fight in piltover’s war but her people die in enforcer uniforms anyway. all for her ending (with no dialogue!) to be: accepting a position on the council to play nice with piltover.

Some in the Arcane fandom think they are being helpful when, regarding Mel having romantic relationships, they say "She's a strong, independent woman who doesn't need a (in this case) man", but they really aren't. Even if they don't mean to, or were being genuine, the statement is still riddled with many undertones because the "Strong Black Woman" trope is often placed on so many black female characters to often deny them the opportunity of love and care and protection that they, in fiction and real life, are often not given or given right off the bat in comparison to their counterparts, to the point where they don't even get the choice either, as well as to push them aside.
It's not even a compliment because, oftentimes, when this term/trope is used, it doesn't even take into account the amount of stress it takes to be strong, let alone strong and alone. Another thing, which also makes it very backhanded, this trope really rears its head regarding Mel from a lot of JayVik fans, some who I will give benefit of doubt while others know exactly what they are doing. Using this term to brush off the fact that, whether you ship them or not, Mel and Jayce shared a bond with one another and she would obviously be saddened to hear of his demise (unless some of you are still running with the trope of her being heartless or just like Ambessa, and even that loses weight when you see Ambessa call Mel her literal weakness). Like, apply this to real life, why would you automatically assume that a black woman doesn't need love just because she's strong? Why do you think she doesn't need to be held or consoled? Why don't you think black girls and women want to see black female characters who are, not only, strong and have power, but also loved and cherished in the same breath?
To add on, there's this trend in fandom of labeling a female character as a "girlboss" or "queen" or just any of these terms, but not doing/adding anything else to her character besides "She's strong!" but will write 1000 word essays on the male characters within the same media. Do you see the problem here? This happens with Mel so much to the point where people don't even know who she is as a character. People (specifically toxic shippers) said that she's just like Ambessa, but the show went out of its way to show you again and again why she is not. Or did you just ignore it/watch with your eyes closed?
#mel medarda#arcane mel#anti jayvik#but more so their toxic (& sometimes racist & misogynistic stans)#mel deserves so much better than to be redused to a trope let alone one that can also cause harm#some of you in this fandom aren't slick whether you like it or not#watch me drop an arcane fic that accurately portrays mel and shows her love in the same breath#arcane#it reminds of how some in the voltron fandom interacted with allura especially k*ance shippers#like idk what's worse--- people outright hating on these (woc) female characters or attempting to mask it with “girlboss!”#both are terrible#or especially with bonnie bc you would try to ship her with other male characters especially ones with questionable morals and for some#reason the fandom & producers who is quick to ship the yte female characters with these same men#but as soon as it came to bonnie it was “oh she's too morally good for them” but elena and care who are held in the same regard aren't? 🤨#it's also important to note that while people ship mel with other female characters like sevika#some specific people within the fandom (not just with her either) with ship a female character with another only if they view them as an#obstacle to their m/m ship & u can tell it's not genuine bc they don't do anything more to add to this f/f ship that they said they suppose-#dly love now all of sudden or that is “better” than the og f/m that they were saying was so “bland” but can't give more for this f/f ship?#you aren't slick and this isn't even good f/f rep bc you can tell that they weren't being genuine

I also think the humor this season mostly fell flat.
In season one it wasn't this over the top, in your face humor. It was something like Vi asking Deckard "Just a taste?" and then hitting his face with the bag full of goods he wanted so bad. It was subtle gags that made sense in universe and then in turn gave us character insight and gain a general understanding of the world.
this season just threw all of that away. I'm still not over that stupid, idiotic bit with the enforcerer and Jinx, I just really do NOT get it at all. Did I giggle, well yes but the more I think about it the weirder it gets. At first glance it does seem like a thing Jinx would do but no actually, she wouldn't.
The joke with Jinx trying to hold up her middle finger to Sevika landed way better and felt way more in line with season ones humor and it made me and still makes me genuinely smile.
Not even the fight scenes felt good anymore. There are two I liked this season and it's Smeech vs. Sevika and Jinx and then of course Jinx vs. Vi.
While I still think Smeech wasn't necessary for the Plot and could easily be removed, the scene he gave me was amazing. Even though some of it still felt like a pointer to the audience instead of to the characters, it wasn't too bad.
Just to put it all together, I needed the subtlety and the in universe elements back, that didn't feel like I was in the office with characters pointing at me and screaming "well laugh, now, it's funny"

Okay, no offense to Sevika but why didn't Ekko get a place on the council...?
He's the chief of the largest surviving faction of Zaun..? And the most willing to cooperate too like.. He sacrificed everything for his people, he's the most capable person for that position.

and per the post i just reblogged about the wonderful black/POC characters of Arcane, i need to get this out of me now because that post got me on a tangent.
Sevika never worked for Vander, nor did she ever work for Silco. She works for Zaun.
Which is precisely why when she left Vander to join Silco in the first place, it wasn't betrayal to her. Vander had compromised, choosing to sacrifice the Nation of Zaun for the sake of his children and due to the immense guilt he probably had for what happened at the bridge. He was no longer truly for Zaun. Therefore, she no longer aligned herself with him. This explains why when Vi called her a "traitor"(which is incredibly ironic once we see the side Vi ultimately chooses), Sevika simply replied with, "Vander had his chance." Because he did. And he failed.
It also is why, when Silco asks her if she was tempted, she specifies that she wasn't tempted by Finn PARTICULARLY, since Finn was a power-hungry crime lord who had no care for the Zaun or the cause. However, had Finn actually cared about Zaun, that meeting would have gone a whole lot differently.
That entire scene was essentially Sevika warning Silco to get his shit together for Zaun and the cause in the most respectable yet threatening way possible. Dare I say, in that moment, she was the leader?
This is also why I think that having her team up with Jinx is literally so accurate to her character, because it just solidifies the fact that she's not just lackey for whoever sits in the chair, she is a fighter for her people, whom she will ALWAYS PUT FIRST, even if it means helping Jinx, since she is now, apparently, a "symbol" of rebellion to her people, and perhaps a symbol of hope. Or so they believe...
good heavens there's so much more i can say about her(ESPECIALLY the deep down desire for validation i believe she lowkey shares with Jinx. 🥲)
but all of this to say, as horny(metaphorically) of a mf i am i will not let it consume me, and neither should yall to the point where you miss the bigger picture of the person.
Sevika is such a complex, multifaceted character, and I wish more people spoke on it.
Also she better not fucking die.
