the parallels between aegon and rhaenyra this episode really do contextualize how paramount it is to safe-guard figure heads during times of war.

we have aegon begging, pleading to be let out onto the battlefield, yet being denied due to the dangers only being held slightly at bay. how criston tells him he’s too important, how alicent tells him to sit and do nothing. we have rhaenyra announcing upon her arrival from the sept that she will answer lord staunton’s call for aid, that she will leave immediately to help them. aegon refuses to listen and see reason behind why no one wants him actively fighting, rhaenyra heeds her council’s words on the opposite, specifically rhaenys’ and jacaerys’, and allows rhaenys to go in her stead. two sides of a mirror, each with different outcomes.

a brash and egotistical decision leaves aegon burnt beyond recognition, betrayed by his closest blood in said brother’s pursuit of the throne he covets. we have a logical and cautious decision which still ultimately ends in tragedy, yes, but the black’s cause still has meaning behind it; rhaenys’ sacrifice will not be in vain, unlike aegon now being bedridden for the foreseeable future, unable to rule. this obviously puts a damper on the green’s own pursuits.

The way the writers turned Daemon into a petulant man child just to indulge in their desire to write out their fantasies and punish the F&B audience is grating.

I know that F&B doesn’t really have a huge amount of characterization beyond a few key areas, so it was fine when this part of his personality was introduced to a light degree - constantly seeking affection, running off when he realized he did something wrong and being spiteful about it, etc. It was ok, because that didn’t make up the entirety of his character.

In S2 though, that is all he is. Absolutely nothing else characterizes him (beyond Ep8, where they seem to have reverted him to a more F&B/S1 personality, because the writers probably don’t want to be accountable for what they wrote in later seasons). He doesn’t seem to have any military strategy despite his capability being established in Ep3/10; he’s been hanging out in Harrenhal for half a year, doing nothing except sulking and giving empty promises; he has no care for his children/family despite being obsessed with protecting Rhaenyra and having children as established in the show and F&B; and he is getting roasted by the writer-insert Oscar Tully because the writers want to bash the character they themselves made.

There is no reason for them to be criticizing Daemon so much when he is only the way they made him; they just want to use him to punish the audience who said the book was better, and to start their portrayal of Team Black as a misogynistic, dark, and fanatic group so that Team Green doesn’t look as terrible in comparison when they get their more book-accurate personalities.
