Finished the live action avatar
It’s not a perfect adaptation, I think the biggest thing is they have taken a lot of the fun out of it, Aang doesn’t wanna go do kid stuff, Iroh is way more serious, BUT I don’t necessarily blame like the series itself as much as I blame the current state of tv being in constraints of like 8 episodes and wanting people to binge it in the first few days and everything.
I hope they let Azula be as scary as possible next season, I think they just wanted her introduced a bit earlier since everyone was gonna be waiting for it, I hope they let Iroh chill out a bit more, but in general from my point of view if you see people bashing this series with as much vitriol as the movie then they’re being super dramatic. There are parts that could absolutely be better but like I said those issues go hand in hand with issues with all of tv right now. I think it’s decent at least, I know it’s a beloved series but some people are being HARSH
#bring back filler and characters just hanging out#and stop expecting people to watch shit in the first 30 seconds before you cancel it#for reference I think it’s a better adaptation than the new Percy Jackson tbh#same kinda vibes in the exposition dumps and kinda treating the audience like idiots but avatar just slightly bumps above percy for me#other minor issues are the acting at times but some of those times are literal children#a lot of people seem pissed at the zuko portrayal but season one zuko is dramatic af a lot of the time#and I think Dallas Liu just turned that up a bit and made him angrier which I’m not mad at#I wish katara was a little snarkier I saw someone mention her rage being kind of hamstrung and they were kinda right#it’s not entirely gone but it’s not there as much as I’d like#cgi is kinda whack at times too but that’s everything atm as well not avatar specific#the martial arts pretty good too esp fire bending they still clearly took from Shaolin kinda styles#I do wish they’d speed aang up a bit though#both in general but also stop using slow mo when he’s doing shit#anyway#I’m not super mad at it#if they don’t fuck up toph and do some better characterising of azula and iroh we might actually see it to the end#and some more episodes for like actual development but I feel like that’s wishful thinking with Netflix rn#even like 10-12 would be better and then sokka could’ve had his development with the Kyoshi warriors#and aang can show more of his reluctance and fear because he’s a twelve year old pacifist#avatar#avatar the last airbender#avatar live action#atla

You grew up close to the Royal Family due to your father's position as a General, but you ran away from home after the agni kai against your best friend, Zuko. Now, you've joined the Gaang and plan on doing your part in ending the 100-year war.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6

(except my mc i guess) like comment reblog if ya like... enjoy! about 1785 words
⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙
We’re standing on a sand-colored platform of a structure currently being renovated or changed to fit Fire Nation standards. The usual for when they occupy lands that don’t belong to them. Aangs in front of me, with Sokka to my left and Katara to my right. We form a triangle and I'm thankful for the partial covering.
I’m thinking of the best way to summarize the threats ahead of us, just in case they try to change the plan. There’s a good chance this will go south.
“Mai, in the center, has good aim with her blades, but it’s Ty Lee, on the left, you should keep an eye out for.” I try to give my friends the run-down on my, I guess, old friends one would say. But we’ve only got so much time before all three of them realize that I’m here.
They lower King Bumi from the top of the building using a metal crane. They’ve got him in a coffin-shaped cage with only his head showing.
“You brought my brother?” Mai speaks first, breaking the silence between the two groups. She squints at the sight of me, but I’m too far away for her to be sure it’s me.
“He’s here.” Aang solemnly replies. “We’re ready to trade.” In these moments, he’s got the grace of a 112-year-old.
Suddenly, Azula speaks to Mai in a hushed tone we can’t quite hear. Fine is never fine with Azula, nothing is ever the way it should be with her. There’s bound to be some trick up her sleeve that only feeds into her misery.
“I’ll help with the girl on the right, she’s the most vicious,” I warn them. I briefly make eye contact with Sokka. We haven’t talked about what was said and now wasn’t the time, but I couldn’t help but yearn for his gentleness. A reminder that I wasn’t like the enemies in front of us, but someone new. Someone he couldn’t hate.
Then, Mai steps forward. “The deal’s off.” With a lift of her gloved hand, King Bumi is raised once again by the crane.
“Bumi!” Aang cries out for his old friend and starts heading towards him, defying the laws of gravity bestowed upon the rest of us. It’s enchanting to see an air-bender. It’s so different from the rest of the elements. He looks like he’s flying.
As he does so, Azula strikes, and I see her blue flame for the first time. She must’ve perfected her oxygen levels for complete combustion; but if she’s the Azula I’ve always known, I know how to beat her. This time, I won’t go easy. I won’t make that same mistake again for nostalgia.
Aang’s head covering flies away as the air moves around him and his arrow is exposed.
I look down at Azula’s reaction and she’s close enough now to hear.
“The Avatar. My lucky day.” The princess smirks, re-organizing her plans for Omashu in her head.
“Remember, don’t let Ty Lee touch you!” I warn Sokka and Katara and dash toward Azula, offering Aang some support against the crazed fire-bender.
I follow her upward, burning the knot on the pulley to cause the rope to lift.
Azula can see me through the grids as the ropes pull us to the top of the building, and I can see her in real-time realize who I am.
“Well, if it isn’t the Royal traitor. Seems like you and Zuzu still share a brain.” She gloats.
“Leave the Avatar alone, Azula. I mean it!” We break through the ceiling made from wood and reach the roof of the building under construction.
She attacks Aang with a blue blast, causing him to break the metal chain. Aang instantly heads downward with King Bumi. He cushions their fall with an air bubble, and they land on the well-known ramps of Omashu. Azula quickly follows them using a cart, and I’m on her tail. If only I had Sokka’s boomerang right now, it makes so much sense to carry one in these situations.
We catch up to Aang, giving Azula the chance to strike him and Bumi.
I distract her with my own fire-blasts, making sure to lean forward and crash into her cart.
“Out of practice?” She questions.
“Out of patience.” I growl, punctuating my sentence with a blast from my right hand.
As we continue our fight by speeding through the ramps, I see Appa in the distance. Relief washes over me as I conclude Sokka and Katara must have gotten away from Mai and Ty Lee.
Aang attempts to lift Bumi onto Appa’s saddle with his bending, but he miscalculates and Bumi’s off to land on the ground. But his friend won’t let him go on his own. Together, they land on another ramp and head down to ground-level.
Azula’s right behind them, and I’m right behind her.
She attempts another attack, but a rock blocks her offense and bursts her cart into dust. I leap off mine before the impact breaks my cart too and we both land on our feet, an homage to our identical upbringing.
She lets Aang go for a reason I can’t quite put my finger on until she turns around to face me. We're still standing on the ramps.
“The key to never losing is knowing when you’re beat.” She says with her hands in defense, signaling that she’s waving the white flag.
I’m still in fight mode. I’d never let my guard down around her, not now, not ever. “You’ll always be beat as long as I’m here.”
She pauses to truly grasp my presence. It’s been three years since we’ve seen each other, and everything’s changed. We used to be on the same team, never friends but bonded by our birthplace. It’s the first time we no longer owe each other pleasantries. Azula, however, uses sweetness as a weapon. “Where have you been, Y/N? You’re missed at the Royal Palace.”
“I doubt it.” Zuko and his mother haven’t touched that home in years, making it impossible for anyone there to actually miss me.
“Your father misses you.”
“I know you’re lying, Azula.”
“You’ve never trusted me; I’ve never liked you. Now we don’t have to pretend do we?”
“Leave us alone,” I get in my fight stance. “Got it?”
“Fine. Loud and clear.” She dashes away in her infamous run toward the unfinished building, probably to catch up with her friends.
Fine isn’t fine. It’s I’ll get you somehow. I think to myself.
I watch her figure fade into the distance, when it hits me: “Seems like you and Zuzu still share a brain.”
Did Zuko abandon his ship?
Is she lying? She would have no reason to lie about something like that, other than to get to me or Aang. I can’t pinpoint a motive. I still won’t believe her 100 percent, but I’ll keep it in my back pocket.
I slide down the ramp Aang took and find the both of them at the very end, standing on a platform in another unfinished building. Once I’m off and my two feet hit the floor, Bumi bends rock to lift his metal enclosure up the ramp in a fit of laughter.
We both watch him go. “Your friend is very… eccentric.” I tell Aang, as he’s standing with Momo on his shoulders.
“Yeah.” I turn to face him, something’s wrong. He’s disappointed.
“He’s not going to teach you earth-bending?” I assume.
“No, he has to stay here to protect Omashu. I guess I got to find another teacher.” Now, he looks like a twelve-year-old boy with the weight of the entire world on his shoulders. There’s no way he’s meant to do this alone. I’d rather be here helping him than with Zuko.
“We’ll find one in no-time.” I reassure him.
“Who were those three girls?” He changes the subject.
“They were old friends too. Azula is Zuko’s sister.”
“Wow.”
“I know.” I sit on the edge of the platform, waiting for our ride with my feet dangling. Aang sits next to me, and for now, we’re just two kids talking, staring at the beautiful Earth Kingdom in front of us.
“What was it like… to grow up with them?”
“It was easy with Zuko. Azula… not so much.” I wince.
Aang’s face contorts, as if he’s remembering a distant memory. “Was Zuko good? Yaknow, back then?”
A smile creeps up on my face. “He was.”
“Do you think he still could be?”
Aang and I stare at each other. We’re choosing to live in the moment before my answer. The moment in which the possibility of Zuko changing his mind, realizing his mistakes, and helping us stop his father exists.
“I don’t know.”
☆
The heat and the prickly bushes are upsetting him further with each and every single step. Looking for food when you’re used to someone cooking for you is daunting, Zuko realizes. How is he ever supposed to live like this? How did Y/N?
As he’s walking back to let Uncle know he couldn’t find anything edible, he touches the side of his hair. It’s grown back a bit since cutting it, slicing off his ties to the Fire Nation. Trading in the red for green, hoping to camouflage with the land and the Earth Kingdom people.
What a stupid idea, he thought. How could anyone ever confuse him with anyone else with the scar on his left eye?
But it seemed to be working so far. His sister hadn’t found them, and they haven’t been arrested for their crimes against every other nation.
In the humid morning, on his long walk back to where his uncle was staring at a tea leaf, he thought about the Northern Water Tribe.
He wondered if Y/N was okay from his strike. Maybe the water-bender girl could heal her, and she’d be okay again. He didn’t mean to. He’s been this hard and heavy with everyone else for the sole purpose of returning home, he forgot Y/N was his home. He’s been in fighting mode for so long, he’s forgotten to turn it off.
She wasn’t home, though. She was with the Avatar. Defending him and betraying her nation. How did she get there? He wondered. He had so many questions about everything. Zuko’s sure she had just as many questions for him.
Could he find her now that he was labeled a traitor?
Where his mind led made his empty stomach drop.
If he found her, he’d find the Avatar. Then, he could go home. But if Y/N was not there, would he still want to go back? Did his father’s acceptance matter above all else? It didn’t for Y/N, but she was always braver than him.
Zuko wasn’t ready for that thought, so he pushed it away.
It wasn’t hard to do when your stomach was louder than your thoughts.

to me, zuko’s relationship with toph is so antagonistic on his behalf because she’s the one member of the gaang (outside of suki who he simply doesn’t consider to be in the gaang tbh) who he least empathizes with, at large and in relation to her trauma. the reason for this is that unlike aang’s, katara’s, and sokka’s traumas which he sympathizes with + connects his trauma to in various ways of arguable aptness, zuko is uncomfortable with the striking closeness of toph’s trauma to his because of how class and privilege factor into their both of their trauma. aang, katara, and sokka are not privileged in any real way, esp not one that reminds him at all of his situation re status and privilege.
zuko finds aang, katara, and sokka's trauma relatable on a level that makes him feel equally victim of the fire nation; that's why he draws lines between kya being murdered in an ongoing genocide to protect katara and ursa, who was certainly not anti imperialism from anything we've seen of her, disappearing to protect him from his abusive father and grandfather. both situations are unpleasant and involve maternal sacrifice, but one is a domestic ordeal while the other is an act of racial violence and genocide. the connection exists, but the context is radically different. still, zuko likes that he can draw those parallels between his trauma and katara's. it allows him more room to feel like a better victim and arguably a bigger one in the context of the war, despite the fact that his status means he did in many ways benefit from his family and country being the perpetrators of it and his own personal role in it throughout books 1, 2, and 3.
i will give the obligatory disclaimer that zuko is a child soldier and he does side with the oppressed in the end, but he himself is not oppressed by the fire nation's genocidal war as a fire nation prince, let alone when he is the fire nation crown prince. he is someone who directly benefited from this war. yes, his father was abusive, yes, he was exiled for 2 and a half years, but he was still afforded many privileges because of the war. that does not negate his domestic suffering or his political exile, but those privileges still came about because of the suffering of others, including the gaang.
this is a nuanced situation. it is extremely complex and hard to accept the simultaneous truths at play here, even for adults, let alone for an extremely traumatized, black and white thinking 16 year old boy. zuko needs to be a victim in the context of the war as well as his family to alleviate his guilt about his participation in it prior to joining the gaang. he needs to relate his trauma to theirs. i will say that he doesn't ever seem to attempt this with suki nor does she offer her trauma to him, but that's more about both the writers and zuko not caring much if at all for her as a person.
but toph receives clear rejection from zuko when she tries to relate to him. her attempts to endear herself to him and to open up to him are shot down. why? surely toph suffered because of the war too. she's from the earth kingdom. but she never suffered a personal loss that zuko respected or related to. toph is not given any dead relatives. she was abused but not in a way zuko would understand, and her abuse did not negate that she lived a relatively comfortable life for being in the earth kingdom during the war. she was rich, she was cared for, she was shielded by privilege in many ways. while zuko is of course far richer than toph, he doesn't want to confront that reality. he doesn't want her privilege to make his obvious. he needs to focus on his suffering, his abusive father, his struggling to fit in as heir, and his time in exile and poverty. he can't accept the idea of those struggles coexisting with his privilege, so he can't accept the idea of toph's either. she has to just be whining about nothing. she has to be a nuisance not to be taken seriously. otherwise, he has to turn and face things about himself he doesn't want to be true.
could he grow to care about her and face his own privilege in the future? sure. but he doesn't in canon.
#atla#zuko#toph beifong#zuko critical#maybe? idk i don't dislike this abt him as a character i think it's really interesting#but it is a shitty thing to do to a 12 year old like omg let her live

Thoughts on what the Gaang would call Iroh post canon? Toph obviously would stick with Gramps, but I'm not sure about the others. I feel like just calling him Iroh might be too informal, but I don't know that any of them would feel close enough to call him Uncle for a good while yet. (Other than Zuko, of course.) There's always General Iroh, but I think that's a title he'd like to put behind him. I cannot remember for the life of me how any of them address him the few times they're all together.
ooh so what i remember of the instance in canon of the gaang referring to him:
sokka calls him iroh when detailing the plan to rescue katara and zuko and try to take down the dai li in tcod, and katara calls him general iroh in sozin’s comet. there might be some other instances (i feel like i remember at least one instance of aang referring to him by name but i could be wrong), but mostly i remember them calling him “your uncle” whenever zuko brought him up in the latter half of book three.
with that in mind:
sokka still definitely calls him iroh. onlookers might indeed find this too casual, but neither of them care, lmao. though he would do just do this anyway, part of it is because of iroh's history, and while i think sokka does trust by the end of canon and especially post-canon that he is a changed man, his pragmatism insists on that distance a little bit. but i also think they come to quite like, understand, and respect each, though sokka still just calls him iroh because he would prefer to just refer to people by their names in general. this works out for iroh, who would much rather people call him by his name or an affectionate moniker than any sort of official title these days.
i think katara might still refer to him as general iroh directly proceeding post-canon (she means, as i believe she did in sozin's comment, it as a reference of respect to iroh's actions trying to make up for his past wrongs, a la leading the battle to take back ba sing se with the white lotus.) he eventually tells her that she doesn't have to, though. it's a gradual switch, as she still catches herself doing it a lot, and though she wouldn't be the first one in the gaang to do so, she'd probably occasionally call him uncle iroh as they come to know each other, but mostly calls him iroh.
does toph call him gramps in canon? i don't remember, but if so, ADORABLE, and regardless, i can totally see it. he does not mind this at all, he gets that it's an Affectionate Nickname. if they're in a more formal setting that calls for something (like a summit or something) she might call him iroh, but really, it's mostly gramps.
i think aang might call him general or even prince iroh - mostly because it stood out to me that he called hakoda 'chief hakoda' when meeting him - but the second iroh says he doesn't have to, it's all uncle iroh all the time! (he is the first, outside of zuko, to call him that.)
i think suki would probably stick to iroh for a long time, mostly because she didn't know him very well in canon, but once she and iroh do grow to know each other well enough, she might use uncle iroh occasionally.
i have to include my buddy zuko, even though we know he mostly calls iroh 'uncle'. he does sometimes still call him uncle iroh, which we see a couple of times (esp in book one i think) in the show, but that's mostly just in casual settings. one notable thing is that NO ONE is allowed to call iroh just Uncle like zuko does. that's his uncle, excuse. (no one ask me or zuko to explain why it's different when they call him uncle iroh. it just is.) though this is entirely unspoken. aang tries this once and receives a glare from zuko so strong that he refers to him only as "zuko's uncle iroh" for a month straight, including to iroh's face. lmao.

u know what. im in the mood to piss ppl off. heres my ranking of the 10 strongest waterbenders in atla and lok (not including avatars, and im not including anything from kiyoshi or yangchen’s era. i havent read those hehe. sowwy. strictly going off the shows).
now im doing this bc waterbending is by FAR my fav form of bending. and in MY OPINION!!!!!,,, people overlook some pretty important facts and feats and decide based more on who their favs are. this is my opinion anyways so im sure i inevitably did that too! but anyways. here we go.
10 strongest waterbenders:
honorable mentions: kya- listen. she is my GIRL. and also she is very strong, but at the end of the day, shes a healer. she has very little combat experience, and she was up against some real monsters in tlok. and shes known to be a great healer, but we dont even see that much of that. for this reason, she cant be top 10:/. eska and desna- they are GOOD. and their synchronized waterbending is super interesting. unfortunately i just kinda think everyone else in the top 10 is stronger. and i feel like the reason they are so strong is because they’re a unit. if they were separated, i have doubts.
10. tonraq- right off the bat im wondering if im going off biases LOL. but i love him. i love his style of bending. he is arguably my fav waterbender to watch waterbend. but unfortunately, in most of his fights, he’s kindaaaa getting worked (im on s2 of lok rewatch now. so i may be forgetting some stuff. but the big fights that stick out for me are him vs unalaq where he gets worked and him vs zaheer and korra where again, he gets kinda worked.) very clearly strong, but does not have all that much to show for it in the show. but he fights with all the big shots for a reason, and he led the water tribe army or something like that. so. hes good.
9. huu- i honestly don’t remember a whole lot of him, but swamp style of water bending is super interesting, and he clearly does it the best. i know we dont see a whole lot of him, but i cant overlook that he is THEE swamp bender.
8. pakku- obv. hes a member of the white lotus and was the master waterbender of the northern tribe. a slayer for his time but i do think he is outclassed by most waterbenders we see in tlok. cannot deny his strength tho. he was the goat at one time for a reason!
7. hama- as far as we know, she is the first blood bender. aka the strongest aspect of waterbending. she is a LEGEND. but again, i think she was a master for her time, but would have trouble holding her own in modern day bending esp without a fully moon.
6. ming hua- the way she uses waterbending as an extension of herself is clearly masterful. and i feel like we never see anyone utilize waterbending anything like how she does. unfortunately, she cant be any higher bc we dont see any extraordinary sub-water feats (healing… i think???? don’t remember lol. bloodbending, spirit healing). but clearly, she was an insane threat to everyone around her.
5. unalaq- so like. MAYBE he should be 4, but i really hate him lol. but i cannot deny he is an EXCEPTIONAL waterbender and pretty much no other waterbender (that we see in s2) can even TOUCH him. hes got the spirit healing, and hes got the skill. somethin somethin vaatu vaatu. idk. i hate him and i dont rly like this season lol. moving on.
4. katara- ok. she was the best in atla. no ifs and or buts. HOWEVER. she gets outclassed in lok and i think we know why. BUT. she was a complete prodigy as soon as she started training with pakku. there was no extension of waterbending that she could not do. she clearly thrived learning waterbending how she did, in such a fast paced, high pressure, and high stakes situation, and thats not even HER PRIME! she was waterbending for under a year when we see her. and we still got the greatest waterbender of that time. there was no one like her, and no waterbender could hold a candle to her by the end of atla. and once again, was only 14. only waterbending for a year. whos doing it like my sis?!
3. tarrlok- unfortunately for katara, the bloodbending family, without a doubt, outdoes her. bloodbending without a full moon? done and done. sorry! i believe katara COULD bloodbend outside of a full moon given the extensive training tarrlok and noatak were given but unfortunately, we will never know, so i cannot in good conscience put her any higher than 4. tarrlok was a master waterbender in itself and pretty much a master blood bender.
2. yakone- he bloodbent. a whole courtroom. with his mind. we dont see anything else from him, and we really dont need to. sorry. it is what it is.
1. amon- he bloodbends with his mind. and learned to take away someone’s bending ability with blood bending. katara, the best healer in the world, could not restore korras bending. granted, she was probably going about it wrong, but the point is, she couldnt do it. taking away someones bending with bloodbending just takes the cake. that aside, even in a combat setting, when he wasnt even trying he was wooping on all other benders of all kinds bc he was controling their movements w his mind. imagine him openly using waterbending AND having his mind control technique?! he would be unstoppable. im ngl i dont love how lok handles waterbending/bloodbending in general. i kinda think they made it TOO strong with little reasoning). also we do see him do an awesome lil water tornado at the end. so. not that we needed that, but its a cute lil cherry on top to his waterbending. hes the strongest waterbender. sorry!
want to finish this by saying had katara learnt to bloodbend outside of a full moon, she would be number one. and i do believe she could have learned. but she didnt. so she cant be first.

You asked for vat7k hot takes uh
I posted this one publicly anyways so I'm not going anon lol but I HATE how ppl make Nuru mother around Varian and Hugo. She's 16. They're 18 and 19 respectively. Yes, she can be a mom friend - but shes still younger than them and a kid. She's not responsible for them or their actions.
I honestly more so think ppl should show Varian and Hugo playing a guardian role for both Nuru and Yong more - they're the adults of the group. Nurus and Yongs parents (esp Yongs bc hes 12) entrusted them with their kids safety and well being. If anything they should be the ones taking charge and making sure the two minors don't get themselves in serious trouble.
Please I beg I need content of Varigo desperately attempting to "parent" and having no clue what they're doing lmao
People need to stop making Nuru what the atla fandom thought Katara was. Idk what it is about people assigning the "girlie girl" of the group the mom friend title like Nuru doesn't even have any canon characteristics beyond like two thing and people still find somehow to fit her into a fake gender norm bc heaven forbid a found family not be nuclear.
I agree that varigo should be taken on a more parental role (I would argue mentor/babysitter role tho) bc its way more realistic and ALSO FUNNIER. WHERE ARE MY MOM HUGO FICS. Where are my fics where Hugo is like "I'll never be a brat to Donella again (lie)" bc Nuru and Yong burnt down another forest plsss I need it SO BADLY and I need "only child with mommy/daddy issues" Varian to ALSO be an over confident bossy mom friend who is so way in over his head that even Hugo is like well this can only end badly AAAAHHHHH

I have so many thoughts on Sokka during TSR, because why did katara talk to aang at the end but not Sokka? I understand why her and Aang spoke, but it made no sense for Sokka not to be more involved. This is Kataras episode, and for that reason I would've thought there would be more Sokka because he is one of the biggest parts of her life. What she said to Sokka about their mother, I understand it and don't blame her, but it was cruel and you can't tell me that Katara didn't feel horribly guilty after, that she wouldn't apologise. Throughout the series they don't have really a positive conversation regarding Kyas death once (not that the topic is positive, but by that I mean it is always either brought up in an argument or katara isn't talking to sokka about it) and the way Katara is shocked when she overhears Sokka talking to Toph kind of implies she and Sokka haven't spoke about it, which does make sense. Sokka tends to shut his deep feelings away, and wouldn't want to 'burden' Katara with them bc of his whole protective thing, which is a reason I agree Sokka probably would've argued further to stop Katara going more than Aang, because in regards to his character, he sees Katara when he thinks of Kya because she sacrificed herself for her. Katara feels the need to honour this sacrifice, whilst Sokka feels the need to keep Katara safe, and Hakodas words encouraged those thoughts. From a plot standpoint I get why he didn't fight it, but I would've thought he would've. He has always been vocal against Katara putting herself in danger, so the time when she is about to put herself in the MOST danger, he's just.. weirdly quiet about it. This episode missed a big opportunity to focus less on Aang and Katara in the background, and more on Sokka and Katara. Having a conversation regarding their mother's death; regarding Kataras survivors guilt and her need to feel worthy of that sacrifice, Sokkas repression of her memory despite remembering the raid clearly and feeling a need to keep Katara safe, would've helped them both, and given a lot more insight on their characters, esp Sokka who has never really been a focus in the series. In my dreams, they talked to each other after the episode ended. I think all of the faults of this episode lie within the writing tbh (Zuko bluntly asking Sokka about his mother's death which was.. insensitive, Aang saying about Appa instead of the death of his people) but yeah.. this has gotten way too long 😭 I just have lots of thoughts about Sokka & Katara
Yeah, I think it would have been a lot better if Katara and Sokka had an actual conversation about this, because I think you're right. I don't think they ever talked to one another about it. Katara was too busy trying to fill their mother's shoes (at eight!) and my guess is that Sokka was too busy trying to emulate their father so he could fast track becoming a warrior to help protect the remainder of the tribe. I honestly think that if the episode had put Sokka and Katara as the secondary focus instead of Aang and Katara, it would have made it so much better. I feel like Sokka would have tried to stop her at first, but then they would have argued and Katara would lash out and then Sokka would realize just how much this means to her, to be able to do this, and how no matter how much he wants to, he can't protect her forever (and hasn't been in a lot of senses, for a while), and it would have just been such a good growth point for both of them. I imagine he'd have this revelation and instead of the scene starting with Aang saying, "I forgive you. Does that give you any ideas?" we have Sokka saying, "I'm coming with you." Katara could tell him no, this was something she had to do herself, to keep the primary relationship reconciliation between her and Zuko, and Sokka would feel bad, but understand and not push the point.
Everything else doesn't have to change—I even understand Zuko bluntly asking Sokka because he doesn't know the extent of what happened, just that Katara said the Fire Nation took her mother away from her, and nobody else in camp would know the answer. Forefronting Sokka and Katara as a secondary relationship that grows and is repaired would have made so much more sense than Katara and Aang's fracturing with no on screen resolution after.

I despise it when Kataang shippers say that Kataang "defies heteronormativity" because Katara is older than Aang and he is shorter than her. Like, no, the creators just have this weird fetish for mommy girlfriends so they made Katara older than Aang for that reason on purpose. They outright said it themselves that they like that Katara is Aang's babysitter. And of course Aang is shorter than Katara when he hasn't even hit puberty? He ends up the tallest guy in the Gaang when they're adults anyway. And a lot of what Kataang shippers claim about Aang being "not stereotypically masculine" is such bullshit since he's just a goofy 12 year old kid, not that he's more "feminine". He has a very traditional marriage with Katara where he is the husband often away from home to work while she ends up as a housewife who has to raise their two oldest kids like a single mom because Aang is too busy with his Avatar duties and favors the youngest son because he's an airbender. Kya's bio says she barely even knew her own father and she resented Tenzin because he's the only one of the kids who spent lots of time with him.
Yeah hes not a “macho guy”… because hes literally a baby when we know him lol
God I hated how traditional and conservative they made everyone in the LOK, esp the family dynamics of Aang and Katara. The sons/airbender being favored, her becoming just a quiet mother, her whole story and passion for being a warrior and helping people (highlighted in the painted lady episode) being shut down in favor of Aangs important big boy adventures in republic city… toph being a cop, like ewwww, take it away! I like how they made it kinda realistic, like it makes sense of Aang to not understand a healthy family dynamic since he never grew up with one… but it was too much, like a huge bummer! Like lighten up, we can have a show geared for older teens and not make it insanely depressing… the tarlock boat scene genuinely disturbed and scarred me😬

ATLA Live action esp 2
UNCLE HE TOOK MY DREAM JOURNAL!!!!
I knew they cut out the pirates scene and had Gran-Gran give Katara the water scroll but what, hear me out, what if the scroll was originally Hama's and Kanna kept it after she was captured. She planned to give it to the next waterbender but it was stolen in another raid and ended up with pirates where Katara steals it back.
Gyasto's funeral 😭😭😭
RIP where we're going we don't need pants
RIP marble trick
Sokka don't ask your sister for help in the middle of shooting your shot.
OK Katara and Aang's little water fight was cute
Wow guys I can't believe Sukka invented the "spar to get closer to my crush" trope.
SUKKA BATTLE COUPLE!!!
Zuko would not stand there and try to burn an unarmed, untrained person already hiding from him. #notmyzuko
Kyoshi showing up was pretty cool ngl
"Thank you Sokka for bringing the world to me" AAWWWWW
And she left him her fan!!! ❤️❤️❤️
So they need to go to the NWT to stop the battle not to train.....
okay
THE NWT CAN TRAIN YOU TOO KATARA!!!!
Oh my God Ozai!!! Ok that ending gave me chills.
Yeah I liked episode 2 a whole lot better.

I just saw the last of the Netflix ATLA trailers. Cutting for a spoiler!
It looks pretty cool tbh
I've thought there was something kind of off about Katara's costuming or something, idk, but I'm warming up to her—there's something really charming about her actress's demeanor thus far
Morbidly curious if this will spawn fandom discourse comparable to original ATLA, which I avoided for years because I knew it only by its fandom's terrible reputation (I thought Zutara was an actual character in it for a significant length of time)
KYOSHI!!! Despite my annoyance with the fanon treatment of Kyoshi, I absolutely adore the original, and I'm delighted she's in the show, even if her appearance ends up being brief.
I don't know, I was really wary after Bryke left (esp as someone who loves LOK as well) and such but between my /eyeroll at uncritical fandom meltdowns over jokes and fake articles and just liking the general vibe, I'm willing to approach it in good faith.

atla movie/atla natla thoughts from my adhd scrambled brains
I think it's silly to say the atla 2010 movie doesn't exist though I can't be mad at the silly memes that come with it. but it has a great zhao death.. and some good aang/gyatso flashbacks i mean aang made him the amulet? thats precious as shit.. tho them burying gyaso in natla is agood additon.
NATLA is not horrible or great it's simply.
OKAY..
it has a interesting tone.. going from Grim as shit to DisneyCornball vibes.. it def got me to think about how many died in the north during Zhaos attack silly me thought everyone lived
I do wish katara and aang hugged in the end it seemed like they were afraid to let the kids hugs and i dunno whyyyy...
but is it terrible? no it just.. Expostion, boring, clunky, Dallas was very good, Sokka got a few good lines, i hate that the trio kept getting seperated. aang/sokka are suppose to meet jet/bumi at the same time.. everyone was doing solo missions and it felt off.
avatar aang cgi was super uncanny valley goofy to me.
Momo was cute/Appa was fluffy i'd love to see em more esp momo.
Yues wig in the movie was better
Jet is hot
hmmm... Ozai burning zukos face was metal as fuck like brutal man. And dallas crying when ozai comes to say he's banishing. s2 zuko is gonna be sooooo goooood.. Dallas brought his A game
Gordons goofyside is wasted i hate that they deny it to us but maybe will see it in s2
I can agree that aang in the animated series going from finding gyaso body to playing on kyosih island tone is rather jarring.. so the idea of aang grieving /not being in a super good mood makes sense but really it doesn't help when all the dang avatars tell him to be friendless..
Kyoshi was the worse her characzation suckkkkeed.
Bumi i could understand on some aspect wehre he was coming from even if he annoyed me. at least him being sore/broken down from the war /being mad at aang makes sense. Kyoshi had no reason to blame aang when she knows its on Roku the war started
anyway i dont think it deserves super hate nor do i think its super great its just. okay... i get it i aws angry at it for a bit but the more i thought of it the more i thought there are bits i liked .. like dallas/Ian /momo/ so there was a bit of savalage stuff for me..
so if people love its that cool. i see zero issue or a reason why we need to be BUT acuatlly to people who loved honestly that's great. Let em love it thecast worked hard on the show. people are free to enjoy things we don't it doesn't make us better than them it just a matter of opinion
but atla fandom oh you love love.. not letting people have opinions that don't agree to yours. this fandom is so.. toxic.. critsizing is good but don't be mean to fans who enjoy things..

latest antikataang take katara has to teach aang how babies are born proving he's far to immature for her in the real world it would be gross. how can people not understand that katara is far to old for aang.. . nevermind in 6th grade 12 year olds are usually in sex ed class learning about the human body (at least thats when i had sex ed) but to this day as a woman i have no idea how the birthing process goes either and as someone who had crushes on younger boys im so tired of antis screeching about 2 years being creepy/gross with kataang they act like katara is 40 and aang is 2 and treat someone like me as if i was a creeper when my crushe was only 2 years younger than me. im so sick of these guys their takes are supposively based on false real world standards while ignoring that in reality zuko is in juvy /maybe prison?? for invading kataras home/village/ burning down another village/ kidnapping katara/sokka/aang/ /hiring an assisaan to kill a 12 year old.
using real world to prove a point that your ship is better is pure nonsence.. in a show a bout people bending elements.. esp when you ignore everything zuko did in the show would end up with him in jail in the real world.
im tired of these people so damn tired.
"Real world" my ass. I don't know if the whole "12-year-olds are innocent little babies" it's just americans being americans, but it sure reeks of it. A pre-teen is not the same as a baby for God's sake. I had some veeeery basic notion of how reproduction worked when I was around 8-9, and I got some pretty detailed sex-ed when I was ten. Sure, I was too young to even be interested in sex, but I still knew what it was and how it worked.
Most 12-year-olds are NOT "innocent", because that's literally the point in life in which you have hormones coming out your ears. Yet most would still have a G-rated romance like Kataang, even with someone 2 years older, not because of "immaturity" or for not knowing sex is a thing, but because BOTH of them are still just kids.
These people talk about Katara like she's in her 20's and the babysitter Aang had a crush on, which is ridiculous.
They were peers. They were friends. The age-gap between them is literally the same as the one between Zuko and Katara. And while Katara is clearly at a point in which she feels attracted to boys (Aang very much included, no matter how Zutara fans love pretend that's not the case), nothing suggested she is at a stage where she is already thinking "I'd like to have sex with that guy."
Once again, it's projecting. The people who say that likely had pretty intense crushes on Zuko (which is normal), so when they saw the "main girl" not only showing zero interest in him, but also demonstrating her attraction towars her actual love interest in a way that didn't involve a forbidden romance, non-stop bickering (or straight up ugly fights), and a TON of teenage lust, they just couldn't accept it. Because it wasn't something that resembled their pre-teen fantasies.
The fact that Zuko was constantly sucking face with Mai and was even subtly implied to have had sex with her in Nightmares And Daydreams must have made them sooooo mad too. Like, yeah, Zuko is already interested in doing more than just holding hands and making out (pretty normal since he is 16/17). He is just not interested in doing that with KATARA, just like she never had any interest in him.

FINALLY a man with a backbone, good on Zuko, hopefully he'll take the time to make sure his promises stuck before crawling back to Katara (but I do hope he crawls back lol) (also I hope Kiyi kept texting Katara during the breakup period like "Zuko's cool but you're way cooler, can we still hang out?" and Katara kept texting her back bc as much as Zuko hurt her, Kiyi is a bright young girl and Katara wants to keep her on the right path (esp since she lives with Ursa 24/7 and has no break from that nonsense))
There's a light at the end of the tunnel from Kiyi! My sources tell me she's getting accepted into a wonderful university three hours away from home. She'll be close enough to visit on the holidays, and far enough that coming home every weekend would be unfeasible. Or so she'll tell her mother.
As for Zuko, she feels bad for him, but her last text to him after Ursa told her that Katara dumped him was something along the lines of "fix this, or else!!!"

i dont feel like discording right now so your getting this here instead.
what the fuck was that
i mean it was amazing in the sense that your an incredible writer and you captured all the traumatic shit perfectly and whatnot but still whatthefuck
you are just trying to completely trying to isolate sokka arent you?
Like its zukos turn to get some type of emotional support (even if it is by iroh 🙄😒) but atleast its there. But Sokka is just pushing everyone away.
i mean i dont blame him for lying, i probably would to in this situation.
and i dont think either of them are in the wrong this chapter, like i think they both have every right to be as angry as they were in this chapter (esp sokka bc katara is acting a tad bit shady)
surprisingly i dont want to strangle iroh this chapter. so that was a weird expierience (actually semi enjoying reading him)
Its like your trying to murder us all but like,, in a very artistic and lovely way.
because liab is horrific (affectionate) and stuff but its also really good and i love it.
i think you should let sokka go batshit and actually attack someone (preferebly iroh) but just my thoughts .
i still dont forgive you for the whole shen situation. i think about that atleast once a day. ive never had a fanfiction haunt me and i didnt even like shen that much but did you care? No you ripped my heart out. (idk what im saying here)
on a different note
you always do such a good job at capturing trauma and the effects of it. also the longevity of it. like as much as i hate reading sokkas slow descent into madness its also very nice and i love it. and as much as i hate seeing zuko tortured over and over and over and over again (leave him alone jfc) its war and its accurate for a prince that got turned over into the wrong hands (of course, who at this point is the right hands for him at this point since sokkas a litttle bit insane and ozais obiously a douche bad and irohs a twit). (i feel like your really trying to push the whole 'iroh is the best thing for zuko rn' thing and while i very reluctently agree, i still dont like iroh. he'll never get my approval).
I got off track.
anywho
even though its taking so long for both of them to actually be maybe sane, i think the little bit (we might) get by end of liab will be worth it because its taking so long??? idk.
i want to say i trust you with that but i dont
is it going to be perfectly executed? Yes. Definitely.
is it going to be happy? Who knows.
i think thats all for now
if your having trouble following my train of thought so am i but its your fault so.
the last portion was intended to be nice idk if it came across that way.
I’m not trying to isolate Sokka! He is doing a damn good job of that without any effort from me.
Katara & Sokka we’re just doing what siblings do, fight. But one is exhausted and emotionally drained and the other is in fight mode and ready to cut anyone down (even if it’s accidentally his little sister)
Shens death was sad, but he was laid to rest soooooo…. Positive moments??
Awwww thanks for the compliment - I’m glad you enjoy the way I capture the longevity of trauma because it’s not going away but time & support will help them heal slowly. Although after what they experienced they will never be “back to normal”
There will be a happy ending for those of the characters that survive, but there will always be lasting trauma. It doesn’t just ‘go away’ unfortunately.
Your ask was really sweet I’m surprised!! I feel warm & fuzzy MAXXXX!!!! you’re amazing. & I’ll make sure to stuff liab full of iroh content JUST. FOR.YOU. <3 (& Zuko cause he needs his uncle right now)
#max this was a really nice ask#I’m pleasantly surprised#you’re always really nice though#in your own spicy way haha#but yeah iroh wasn’t bad last chapter#he was too emotional because he and Zuko had a moment#& he wasn’t there for most of katara pov#which is fine she learned A LOT#I’m excited for next chapter though#:) thanks for the nice ask max#I enjoyed seeing you in my inbox#even though I miss you in the server <3#liab#ITF#maaaxx#ask

i want to give my 2 scents on that infamous shipping video bryke put out in i think it was what 2008/2012??? im unsure.. anyway my thoughts are this... One it was def immature/ not great to use kids artwork to demean them.. As a lazy artist taking peoples art to insult them really bugs me.. its why i hate when people here grab zutara art and bash it.. artists put their heart int their works. talking about it in ims is one thing but posting it/bashing it is just meanspirited.
what im saying is i totally can understand why people were upset with that video..
personally as an azulaang crackshipper i thought that part was kinda funny.. but i enjoy weird darkships. and as mutliszutara shipper i obv dont think people shipping it are dooomed. while i find it a bit amusing it was def meanspirted/uncalled for.. beause at the end of the day they are adults and you dont bully children over ships. its why im mad at grey for bullying kids some years ago/ and being very weird to em in general.. im happy her adult va is gonna be different.. im hoping one day daph will too.
BUT anyway its been what 14 years now? i see no point in still being bitter over that video after 14 years.. i see zero reason to be bitter over a ship for that long.. doesn't seem healthy its more fun to just enjoy your ship and not act like the creators robbed your house and stole everything you love. this fandoms attachement to being robbed/ is riduclous.. the creators didnt owe me zutara at 2008 back when i shipped it its their show.. they can have whatever ship they want. I wanted danny/valerie i got danny/sam.. it sucked but it wasnt the end of the world.. plus Butch acutally sucks as a person..
i think its just time to let the bryke hate die cause .. its been like 14 years. and without em the show wouldn't even exist. there be no zuko/no katara... there be nothing.. ive never see a fandom hate a creator so much its just insane to me.
esp with a bazillion other writers involved. who shockling wrote for kataang/maiko. . zutara was a fun crackship but thats all it was man.. a crackship no one was robbed.
#atla fandom problems#anti zutara fandom#so they dont complain#tho they are the ones that really need to let go#like it seems so unfun to hate people after 15 years to me#except jrk cause shes disgusting
