As someone new-ish (mid June) to Polin / LN and having tried to read up on everything L/N related since then, esp. all the proposed timelines, I’m tbh still getting confused about timelines and (for me new) info that gets shared in the comments that sometimes seem to contradict timelines/speculation I found myself agreeing with before so I’m helping someone can just clarifying some things timewise for me.

In your timeline, you mentioned believing N was dating someone (I assume E) until March/April 2023.

N & L were in Australia in April and after coming across too comfy/intimate, their teams put out a people’s magazine article about them only being friends and supportive co-stars and not dating, and N reiterating that by calling L friend and dude when she posted about their Austrialia stop (if I read some comments correctly?)

Then on May 5 (as per a comment) N shared the song Kaleidoscope …which I have only today read the lyrics for and oof…esp. the first part hits hard. Depending on perspective (delulu or not) this could apply to E (if we assume it was him she prob. dated) or L.

The part ‘And if you change your mind, I will understand, And it'll just take time, To go back to being friends’ made me think of E turning up again now promo is over and hanging out with N & her friends & JD as mentioned on this blog. Like they broke up, he went off to film Witcher, N continue on her Polin Press Tour and now they are back in each others orbit (as friends?)

Also if it was for E, the ‘just co-stars’ people article could have been not just to the audience but also to try and pacify E (& A)?

Though I think I remember reading you mentioning in one of your answers you thought all her song choices during the tour were about L. How would you interpret that song fitting into your timeline of things? Admittedly that line in the song about ‘crossing lines’ made me think about L. But then again that song would make it seem like L rejected her and chose A over her which a. doesn’t seem believable b. really doesn’t sit well with me.

And wasn’t it around the same time the ‘inStyle stunt’ happened in which L was an active participant (so it wasn’t just A)? Like he felt the article wasn’t enough and he wanted to hint at A being his companion (albeit having to stay in the bathroom)

Then to make things even more confusing it was mentioned that L and his team - after the inStyle thing - put out articles about him being single (not just not dating N) …which still makes no sense to me tbh.

Then Italy happened with the inital tension btwn L/N (including a clip you posted trying to lipread what they were saying, where I also read as her saying I fucking hate this & him responding [shut up] and smile. Followed by them looking all cozy again.

Then A turned up at the NY premiere with his sister/mom - which plus him taking her to the London premiere as well - kind of contradicts one of my previous thoughts (in trying to make sense of it all) that L was asked to hide or at least not publicize A during the press tour to sell Polin (bc they were worried with all of the hate Polin/NL apparently were getting since they were announced …which, I digress, I am really glad to have missed bc WTF). If that was the case, I don’t see Shondaland/Netflix wanting her to be at the premiere?

Then there was EKR chaos dinner and some DM article about L having kissed someone. I read before about EKR stepping in immediately and saying it didn’t happen, but I only just now read that he mentioned L having a GF and to take that down (again partly to pacify A like after Australia?). EKR knew about A and L having a GF (maybe L talked about her at the dinner seeing how she wants to be an influencer etc) and basically outed L as having a GF, all while his team had put out articles about him being single.

And then the games continue ending with the London pap walk and DM/Backgrid/People’s mag articles showcasing A and trying to sell her as his ‘rumored’ GF. (Which all don’t mention her age, while DM likes to post about N possibly dating a younger man.) Articles, even if they are from A’s team, L or his publicist (if he currently) has one, is not contesting or denying.

Meanwhile the SM games from L’s friends/A/S continue and make it seem like they are all trying to help A get a job/more exposure/ recognition. This latest trip seemed to be both to celebrate R’s bday and relax all together plus get some pics/hints of A/L and articles to get A’s name out there again…Still looking really awkward in those pap pics…’Passionate embrace’ indeed 🤦‍♀️ but from other pics I saw (involuntarily as they were posted on my twitter tl) he looked relaxed and happy celebrating R’s bday with A around. The group also - besides the first days of pap pics and exposure - seemed to spend their time on a boat privately together which I would imagine being very awkward if things were not alright/unraveling btwn them. I also don’t for a minute think he’s not aware of what A and his friends post and I do think he’s ok with it as long as they keep certain boundaries as mentioned by others in the comments.

Again two perspectives - the unraveling one, helping her get what she wants so L can untangle himself from her slowly, which I would prefer, or the other one, after her having to play stuck in the bathroom all year, him trying to be a caring BF, feeling he should make it up to her (also for still not wanting to officially claim her bc he probably knows it would create another shitshow for her and him, which would help neither of them careerwise) making it a priority to help her out with her career while waiting for fandom to get over pap walk and them being together (while still hopefully for his sake also trying to work on his career and not just hers).

Is that order of events correct or did I confuse/miss something?

Does it all still fit within your timeline and thoughts that the unraveling might be starting/coming sometime soon?

And do you think that N - if she was/is hurt or annoyed by L/the whole narrative since the London premiere, whether it is professionally and as close work friend or as more or if she herself is dating someone - will try to keep a distance from L (both on set as well as on her SM even during filming and promo) to not instigate more L/N talk (esp. if L keeps A around) and focus more on posting this season leads plus Claudia when back on set?

I recently read I Love Yoo for the first time and first off, wow what a series. as I've been diving into the fandom I found your blog (your analysis posts are absolutely amazing) and since you've been around the fandom a long time I was hoping you could help clarify a few things for me. obviously there's seven years of fandom and meta context I'm missing out on, but I keep seeing references to two planned time skips and seasons that I'm a little confused about. everything that's out now I think is still the first season? but I'm wondering what exactly the author has shared over the years of the planned timeline, time skips, etc. thank you in advance for any clarification you can provide! very excited to dive into more of your analysis in the future

I feel like getting to jump in and just binge ILY from this point is SO amazing - having this much of the story already out, so many episodes and being able to see how those threads connect and where they go! 🤩 The dream! (Also thank you!!!! I really appreciate that! Esp since I haven't made any ILY posts lately; they're in my head, I just haven't gotten around to finishing typing them out lol)

But to answer your question, quimchee has told us there will be two timeskips. The first is a short timeskip that will bring us to graduation, and the second is a much bigger timeskip of around 4 years or so. 👀 I have a little write up in the ILY Discord server about this that I should finally add to my blog today after work about how I think the timeskips coincide with Yujing's article - that is, I think she's likely working on two articles.

Now, this part is speculation and not from quimchee - she's only told us when the timeskips are and how long they'll jump us. But Nol's sentence is 120 days (less if he's good, as Yujing noted) and 120 days takes us to April. What else is in April? Shinae's birthday! Timing-wise, it depends on if quimchee is using a Korean calendar for school; after all, she did use the college entrance exams that Korean school systems utilize. In this case, graduation happens in February, but given that ILY doesn't strictly add to Korean or U.S. culture rules (quimchee refers to the setting as The United States of Asia lol) we might see this budged to adhere to a more U.S.-centric graduation era where Nol's release times up with Shinae's birthday (no way are we skipping over that!) and graduation. This is likely when Yujing will drop her first article about Nol, possibly exposing that he was framed for a crime he didn't take, made to take the fall, and most certainly exposing that he's the true legitimate heir of the Hirahara family by Mukoyoshi law. Yujing noted that Nol pleading guilty actually helps them/their case, and I think this is so because it isn't the first time he's taken the fall for someone else because he's the "other son"; it's heavily implied that the altercation that occurred between him and Kousuke was not Nol's fault/doing.

Now, the other timeskip will likely see our cast reuniting after Shinae finishes college. I think she will end up taking Yui's offer - whether because she's backed into a corner or because makes the choice we're yet to see - and I think we might actually see her come back as Kousuke's assistant to finish off her contract (or perhaps as part of the Yui trap). Nol will likely go to college abroad and Kousuke... well. I think we can see where he's headed 😭 This is also when I think Yujjng will REALLY go after Yui and Gun, what all those articles she was researching are leafing to.

Something quimchee mentioned on a patreon stream is that during the timeskip (and it wasn't specified which), she'd like to show the passage of time by showing the characters keeping in touch via letters, emails, texts, etc which I'm REALLY looking forward to!

In the past, we were told ILY would be divided into 2 seasons, and that season 2 would start after the big timeskip, but quimchee has said before that's not going to happen? However, sometimes a lot of us still refer to season 2 as "post-big-time-skip" for brevity lol. Maybe we'll still see it as s2 in the future but last I heard it won't be broken up into seasons.

I know this was more than what you asked but I always get so excited talking about the timeskips, I can't wait for them!!! I know the first one is SO close! I think quimchee was trying her best to get to it before her birth so she could do a little break before the first timeskip but alas. But we are SO close, I can almost taste it, AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

I keep thinking abt that article/interview w kate trefry where she (or someone else?) said that the story we get from “henry”(001) in st isn’t reliable but is from his perspective, and that tfs is from a different perspective… and so it’s like, okay, is tfs (at least partially) brenner’s perspective as he’s trying to feed henry a specific set of memories to get him to “cooperate” etc.

but now I’m even thinking that��� maybe it’s what we see in st that isn’t from henry’s perspective… I need to wait on more info before I even try to humor that in any real depth but like. it wouldn’t be out of left field for them to lie like that in an interview. and tbh I feel like it would make sense for the “broken and beaten” henry to have a more warped sense of his past after being fed lies by brenner for decades/brenner trying to feed el specific memories/lies to get her powers back rather than telling any truth at all

I think the writers strike is happening now (correct me if i am wrong), some of the people that i've talked to said that it could take 3-4 months (like the previous writers strike), and it could naturally delay some of the production.... but i am confused bc how is it gonna affect the filming for ST now bc the filming starts in may/june?

It is happening officially as of today and the WGA has excellent reasons to strike and I completely support it.

It def will affect ST production unless they really have finished writing the season, but, even then, they always do rewrites the whole time. Maybe bc they’re so close to filming, and (if rumors are true) are beginning with specific limited filming, they could start filming that? That’s doubtful though as not only is the season prob not finished, but the Duffers couldn’t revise the writing as they go along as they and the writers room usually do (think for instance of how the Byers brothers scene was added during filming and they also make lots of smaller rewrites too) bc that would break the strike. I don’t see how they could begin production without the ability to revise, so would need to wait until after the strike.

Then there’s the bigger question of what else constitutes breaking the strike. Do you do table reads during a WGA strike—aren’t the writers usually present for those? Doesn’t it feel anti union to hold them and proceed with filming as normal—esp bc SAG and DGA support the WGA strike (altho SAG is advised to keep working during it). How is filming not crossing pickets? IASTE and Teamsters I’m assuming will do the right thing and not cross picket lines.

tl; dr I don’t see how they can begin production.

So it depends on how long it takes for studios to come to the table and actually fix the problems that need fixing; the sides seem very far apart with the studios barely offering anything.

If anyone has read any good articles on how it affects streamers lmk—the stuff I’ve read is Sarandos saying oh we’ve got plenty of content, but nothing specific about shows about to begin production.

So, there's been a few articles in the past decade or so that express distaste at the comparison of Princess Diana & AB (and a fair amount of umbrage in misc comments on social media at any parallels being drawn whatsoever, generally, I'm not gonna lie, from C/oA stans...Catherine was the Princess of Wales, Catherine was the one that was popular and beloved by the people, I think these are the broader strokes they believe should be associated with her more...that Catherine was the older of the pair does not seem to matter, that Catherine was, like Camilla, the one that knew 'the prince' the longest doesn't matter, because Camilla was Other Woman and AB was Other Woman, and as such they were both hated by the public, they will never see past any other elements of the story/stereotypes than those, esp. because ultimately they believe all the animus directed at both of those women was/is entirely deserved and justified);

But what's interesting is it's not even so much on the grounds that there are always pitfalls in sanctifying people in general, it's generally pearl-clutching about how Diana deserves sanctification, deserves every possible iteration to be made of her life, and AB does not...the answer to the 'moral quandary' presented in the The Times' BSR review, "Anne Boleyn is being rebooted — but was the tragic Tudor queen a whore and a witch or the Princess Diana of the Tudor age?" by Alison W/eir was basically that she wasn't a whore or a witch, but again, her oh-the-humanity answer of "she wasn't a very nice person" and deserved her "unpopularity in her own time", and was so far from Princess Di, woe to those that popularize AB, somehow she omits herself from that list, how stupid they are to ever believe otherwise, etc

The implication of the above is more what's funny to me... she shouldn't be treated as Princess Diana, because Anne 'had a mean streak' (using "words as one would not address to a dog", from a source no less than above reproach than that of an ex-flame)... but, Diana didn't? The woman who pushed her stepmother down a flight of stairs? The woman who confronted her children's nanny with an entirely personal, private (and leaked, to her belief, although it was later revealed it was another doctoring by Bashir) medical document? Diana was sanctified because she died tragically; if she were still alive today, she would almost certainly be "cancelled"; famous (women, particularly...they are generally judged more harshly) people have been cancelled for much less.

And then we have author Vanora Bennett, who did compare them, but not favorably, and rather misogynistically (to other women, as well):

[Anne] didn’t have the knack for self-reinvention that has brought modern celebrities such as Victoria Beckham long-term success, or the tight-lipped compliance that saw Kate Middleton claim her prize after eight years of waiting for Prince William to propose.

If anything, Anne reminds me more of Princess Diana – both of them charming and glamorous, yet unable to maintain smooth relations with the royals around them; manipulative and sometimes vindictive, yet posthumously elevated to icons of victimhood; dying too soon and leaving young children to cope with their tragic legacy.

Unfortunately this assessment has also been given academic gloss, but luckily this has mainly been limited to GW Bernard's asinine, quasi-profound remark that since Diana had sex outside of her marriage, AB probably did, too.

Idk, I've honestly just been thinking about this because I've been thinking about fan reactions as I watch The Crown, puzzled by how Peter Morgan is so good at writing those royals, but so bad at writing these royals...

Because, really, I think there are elements of both Camilla and Diana's stories in AB's? On the surface level, you have ebullient, charismatic, cheated on by her husband, husband dated her sister 1st, (honestly, never not going to be a weird thing, it must have been borne out of...I suppose, both the utterly limited society of 'acceptable' people to interact with for those of extreme wealth and the entitlement and belief you're above such provincial concerns as ‘That's Weird’), which is probably what led to that being motif in the Kristen Stewart as Diana movie.

And then, Anne was unpopular, but it was said basically, that...those who knew her, loved her, and those that didn't were, at the least, captivated by her despite themselves.

How much of her contemporary slander was from people that had only ever glimpsed her? I think we forget that when we forget how late the sixth-finger and other misc. deformities were alleged. 'Goggle-eyed whore' is the mark of someone who saw her from enough of an distance that the only feature of note was those infamous, large eyes.

Often people confuse charisma with popularity, very often they go together but they are not interchangeable, not synonymous. Charisma can only take effect within intimate contexts. As such, it's true that Anne had one but not so much the other.

Who knows how she might have fared, popularity-wise, if she'd had the powers of radio, TV, etc at her disposal...they're creative reimaginings out of her control/remit, but she has those now and seems to have done better on that front in immortality than she did in mortality/life.

What we have basically is two elements -- "royal mistress" and "threatening the image of the monarchy", and maybe even a little “marrying for love [when royal]”. These are all broad narrative stripes that are seen as “scandalous”, all seen as disruptive, against status quo, so they are always going to inspire creators. At the end of the day, the hand-wringing over that inspiration rings ... insipid? Naiive? Take your pick.

Zac following V is HUGE for the fandom and locals (cause duh FEELS) but for him as an individual… she’s a part of his life no matter what tbh. I mean whether they are close or not during a particular season of life they go wayyyyy back. like the whole hsm cast is like that. even ashley posting hey buddy to zac on threads like they’re all connected to each other forever. ofc it’s up to them how they keep up that relationship etc but it’s always gonna be there. like with ellen pompeo and patrick dempsey. there was a looong season of life they weren’t talking to each other whatsoever but they are good now like they’re buds. tbh there’s not ONE article van does where they don’t say HSM and mention Zac’s name lol and Zac can do 100 diff things and ppl always say remember hsm hehe. so she’s honestly way more than just an ex bec their relationship isn’t solely based off just their romantic era they literally were best friends and a part of the hugest things of their lives + careers and growing up together and gaining fame together. that’s huge. like this is their version of army brothers for life LMAO haha. so it’s totally understandable. as to why now? we really don’t know but it’s not that surprising as well bec in today’s day and age a follow/DM is the best way to reach out to someone u know esp one who ur not in touch with on the regular and just show ur cool with them/silently supporting them or whatever that means but generally smth positive. that being said everything they do is like national and international news LOOL so it definitely magnifies the action but we can’t really say it’s JUST exes following exes etc and look at those social rules bec it’s not JUST that dynamic. I mean Austin and her yes they ONLY follow the exes dynamic bec they were only ever in a romantic relationship. nothing more. but i DEF also get why it’s extra wild bec Zac chooses to follow her when it’s literally YEARS after and post engagement lol & he’s single. lol. chaos. and 100%, usually i would feel she would follow back/not follow back someone regardless of being in a relationship however….. i feel like with the hate her new boy gets she definitely will think twice.

SO? -> ohhhh my god he's fr. he's just Like This. holy shit. i like him. what is going on" and get from is this a fucking joke? to i can't help but root for him in record time. and i'm kicking my feet and giggling imagining how this has to go. i don't even know i'm just picturing a bunch of different disjointed snippets and it's soooo amusing. i like to think they have some sort of improbably adorable rom-com meet-cute moment (ie crashing into each other, trent falling off something and ted catching him, etc) only it's not so much meet as they've had their unfortunate meet-ugly already and it flusters trent, as much as he wishes it didn't, especially when ted sticks around and keeps being nice to him (something something if trent took a fall ted sticks around INSISTING on helping him patch up) and somehow either ted cajoles him into a conversation (ted spotting that one journo with the cool glasses who asked that Particular Question: hmmmm. i should say hi! :D <- man who is going to charm that journo's pants off. not literally. ahem. for now.) or trent decides to use this as an opportunity to bug him for a quote only he is ANNOYINGLY (read: trent is loving this) clever with words and dodging verbal traps and such and it honestly becomes less "journo badgering gaffer for quote" and more "genuinely thrilling banter the likes of which trent hasn't had in AGES" (ted is also enjoying himself honestly, esp as the sharp-tongued reporter visibly mellows out and just starts enjoying the banter instead of actually actively trying to trap him/get an embarrassing quote, even forgetting to take notes, clearly just enjoying the conversation) and ted ends up leading him into giving up some of his own personal conversation and trent feels. a little embarrassingly outfoxed but again in a sort of thrilling way that, honestly, it's a little more embarrassing that he's enjoying so much. the banter might get sliiiightly flirtatious but just a little bit given ted's still married and trent's freshly divorced. ALSO SEE: again. just. trent somehow getting to see ted's utter sincerity, not just that he ain't stupid. like. oh. okay. he's just like this. (this definitely ends in the 'i enjoyed spending time with you today trent!'/'you....actually mean that don't you' exchange again). something something because it's in an unintentionally non-professional context (they still have to work within that framework but it's not literally an interview) trent actually being more honest towards the end and it's the start of a very bizarre (TOTALLY PROFESSIONAL) friendship (??????)

b) on one hand, the plot kind of hinges on rebecca not realizing ted's managed to charm trent before he actually publishes the article. so very funny if she doesn't notice until later and then when she's like "WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED" later ted's casually like "oh, trent! nice fella, i ran into him a little after that first interview and he's liek a hedgehog, you know? all spiky on top and soft underneath? sweet guy, very funny" and rebecca's like HOW IS HE FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE. WHAT. however, on the other hand, it's very funny if she does just straight up see them acting like good friends ALREADY from the get go. so like, just ignoring those larger plot implications for a second the hilarity of rebecca hiring the cuntiest journalist she knows only to look out the window like an imperious queen watching the preparations for an execution only to see said executioner giggling with the executionee is so fucking funny. i like to imagine he hasn't mentioned his accidental friendship with trent to beard yet just because it's been such a short amount of time (esp bc trent's still a bit of a hardass in the press room, bc it's his job, but i think there's more of a wry amusement to the question rather than a cat waiting to pounce, because he's pretty sure ted will handle it) so beard's like fuck, we've got this journalist coming, the one who said that thing, he's ready for war, and then he gets there and ted's making some dumb pun and trent crimm is badly hiding a giggle and he's like ?????? WHY ARE THEY ACTING LIKE FRIENDS. TED HOW DID YOU WORK THIS FAST

i was talking about how i like to have s1 trent get his brains kissed out (bc he deserves it) and also how if it's ted like. the earlier in the season it is the funnier it becomes. when you're not taking it too seriously. ANYWAY. and now i'm thinking about like. okay, so, ted charms trent pretty early. obviously. he wins him over in episode three, with the interview, but i think he was already at least a little bit reluctantly charmed by his second press conference in episode two. now, i've done plenty of scenarios where they meet pre-canon/ep1 for whatever reason, and i've done plenty where they end up kissing/become closer than in canon during s1. usually during or after episode three. however i am now thinking of what would happen if they somehow met, in a relatively in private, non-professional, one-on-one (or with only their kids, no other adults?) context, etc, between episode one and two, when trent's opinion of him is at the lowest it ever gets (and honestly, probably vice versa, too). and i am just... spinning that.

because, i mean. you know ted's gonna charm him. even if he isn't trying quite as hard without the interview giving him a direct reason, he's gonna charm him. just by being his kind, goofy self, he's gonna charm him, and without the interview to give context and reason to be talking professionally--assuming they are still talking and not avoiding each other, for whatever contrived reason--it's gonna put poor trent in such a snit. liking ted personally, so much, and not knowing how to handle it because as far as he's concerned, this is still someone who is putting the team and everyone who cares about it in a bad situation, but also, even after talking to the man for a few hours, it's already hard to believe he would do that. trent catching on to the fact ted lasso is smarter than he pretends, catching on to the fact that nice and kind and positive attitude is at least mostly if not completely and utterly sincere, and all that--just a little bit earlier. not enough to really make a difference in canon but. idk man. a) assuming this is a barely canon divergent thing it's just kind of fun to imagine that happening b) however back on my s1 trent gets kissed agenda i have literally no idea what circumstances could possibly arise to make that happen however i am CACKLING at the thought.

ANYWAY, back to the point: i just think there's something kind of compelling about that. between episodes one and two, when both of them have the lowest opinion of the other they will ever have, meeting in some innocuous way and being helplessly, unwillingly charmed. ted sees That One Reporter outside the press room only he's affectionately wrestling a frog hat onto a small child, grinning at her when she boops his nose, and can't help a smile at the reminder that even the coldest, rudest people are people, capable of kindness and goofiness, and he hadn't forgotten but it's still nice to see. trent, confronted with the full blast beam of The Lasso Effect right to the face and up close and outside of the press room, away from where he feels most confident, off duty and balance, sans notebook and pen, stumbling just a little into awkwardness, the edge of rudeness that comes from dislike that's tempered by some standard of british politeness and a hint of confusion and then quickly melted away entirely into utter bewilderment and oddly endeared charm, because what. trent crimm has no idea what to think of him. ted finds he actually likes trent, quite a bit--their conversation, however odd, had been entertaining, and despite their, uh, eventful, less-than-ideal first impression, ted may or may not have a favorite journo suddenly. because that sharp-cutting no-holds-barred journo from the press room is also strangely warm, and perpetually bewildered at the smallest kindnesses, and a good dad, nevermind that ted's heart is aching interacting with little kids like that.

idk man i'm just going in circles here i'm rotating and spinning because something something each seeing a better side to the other just a teensy bit earlier and it doesn't really change that much in the long run, unless it does; something something ted has only seen trent once, at his worst, being outright hurtful, and now here they are outside of that context, and trent has only reasons to think ted's incompetent, careless, greedy, an asshole, or some combination of the four, and yet here they are, and just. idk man! something

Satanic Temple leader used to be "male supremacist" bigot Mike Cernovich's book editor

Greg Stevens, a.k.a. Priest Penemue, is currently The Satanic Temple's Director of Ministry and Executive Producer at TST TV. But he used to be book editor for Mike Cernovich, the alt-right bigot and conspiracist.

That and a lot more is in our latest article: "Today is a good day for The Satanic Temple to release its finances."

OK, this is a long one, but we have split it up to hopefully make reading easier.

It's on Page 2 that we have what we think is brand new information.

The Satanic Temple threatened a lawsuit in part for a TikToker referencing the "long ago" friendship of Greg Stevens and neo-Nazi launderer Milo Yiannopoulos.

We didn't know that Greg Stevens spent more than 20 years and the vast majority of his adult life being part of the men's rights, anti-feminist, rape-apologist sphere until some point in his 40s when he claims he woke up and realized the error of his ways.

But, this was known.

What we didn't know, and what we don't think anyone has talked about, is that Greg Stevens a.k.a. Priest Penemue—“longtime leader in The Satanic Temple”, current “Director of Ministry” and “Executive Producer of TST TV”—was in so deep he edited a Mike Cernovich book in 2015

If this is already well-traveled ground, someone else should definitely correct us, but that level of familiarity is incredible, and largely seems to have been scrubbed from the Internet, esp. given the "male supremacist" Mike Cernovich's retroactive Twitter wipe.

We're not going to go deeper into what makes it so horrible a person would work with Mike Cernovich in 2015, but we do go into that a little also on page two.

Cernovich absolutely got worse, but he and Greg Stevens were also still on good terms till 2018

Okay, nobody cares about this, so I need to yell about it here.

The mystery originates from an addition to Compert Con Culainn found in RIA MS D iv 2, which I refer to as CCC-D because I can't type that out every time. Here's a snapshot:

Editing this text was my palaeography assignment during my MA. Eventually, I will finish tweaking this edition and do a proper translation and publish the damn thing, because it's about time this text got some more attention. In the meantime, here's that section (plus a little more):

Gist of it is that Ceat mac Magach shows up shortly after Cú Chulainn's birth and with him are his aide and his buime -- his foster-father and his foster-mother -- Srian and Gabur, and their baby son Laegh is with them.

Now, this has been raising questions for me for some time, because a) it seems to give Láeg a connection to the Connachta, which isn't particularly reflected elsewhere, and b) I couldn't figure out why he'd be connected to Ceat, or why Ceat would be connected to his parents specifically.

MEANWHILE this text and another text, Fled Bricrenn ocus Loinges mac nDuíl Dermait, offer some interesting evidence for the origin of Láeg's patronymic, namely the splitting of the name into two parts, (S)rían and Gabur. As I noted in my Quaestio Insularis article (it's open access! Go read it!):

the most literal meaning of the names is srían, ‘bridle’, or rían, ‘path’, and gabor, ‘a horse (esp. a white one), a mare’. It is likely that ‘Riangabra’ was originally an epithet designating a charioteer, which was interpreted later as a patronymic.

(There's more detail in the article about whether 'path' or 'bridle' is more likely.)

This is related, I promise.

Because today, in Lebor Gabála Érenn, a text in which Ceat sometimes seems to be allied with the Ulaid although he's Connachta himself, I came across this:

The wording's slightly ambiguous, imo, but the index was pretty certain in interpreting this as telling us that Ceat was a charioteer. ❕❕ 🤯 ❕❕ My eyes practically popped out of my head reading that, because I THINK THIS IS THE ANSWER.

Look, we are missing some pieces here. There are probably some lost texts that would supply them, if only they were not lost. But what I think we've got here is the root of Ceat's association with Láeg's parents:

"character is associated with charioteering" -> "character is associated with the term mac (s)riangabra" -> "mac (s)riangabra is interpreted as a patronymic" -> "character associated with charioteering is associated with Srian and Gabur"

Voila, an occasional charioteer becomes the foster son of the parents of the most famous charioteer(s) in the whole Ulster Cycle.

MYSTERY (kind of) SOLVED

Now I'm desperately curious how many other texts there might once have been in which this was the case, and what the relationship is between LGE and CCC-D. For now, this observation will be a single sentence at the end of a footnote in an article otherwise focused on Láeg in TBC, but you can bet if I ever publish that translation of CCC-D, I'm going to dig much further into this in the commentary...

Sometimes I complain about the editions of texts I have to use regularly and then I need to consult Lebor Gabála about something and realise I'm getting off lightly.
