XXXIV - EL POZO El pozo! Platero, ¡qué palabra tan honda, tan verdinegra, tan fresca, tan sonora! Parece que es la palabra la que taladra, girando, la tierra obscura, hasta llegar al agua. Mira; la higuera adorna y desbarata el brocal. Dentro, al alcance de la mano, ha abierto, entre los ladrillos con verdín, una flor azul de olor penetrante. Una golondrina tiene, más abajo, el nido. Luego, trás un pórtico de sombra fría, hay un palacio de esmeralda, y un lago, que, al arrojarle una piedra á su quietud, se enfada y gruñe. Y el cielo, al fin. (La noche entra, y la luna se enflama allá en el fondo, adornada de volubles estrellas. ¡Silencio! Por los caminos se ha ido la vida á lo lejos. Por el pozo se escapa el alma á lo hondo. Se ve por él como el otro lado del crepúsculo. Y parece que va a salir de su boca un gigante, dueño de todos los segretos. ¡Oh laberinto quieto y mágico, parque umbrío y fragrante, magnético salón encantado!) - Oye, Platero, si algun día me echo á este pozo, no será por matarme, créelo, sino por coger más pronto las estrellas. Il pozzo! Platero, che parola profonda, così profonda, così verde-nera, così fresca, così sonora! Sembra che sia la parola che perfora, girando, la terra scura, fino a raggiungere l'acqua. Guarda; il fico ne adorna e smonta la bocca. All'interno, a portata di mano, si è aperto, tra i mattoni con il verderame, un fiore blu dall'odore pungente. Una rondine ha il suo nido, più sotto. Poi, dietro un portico di ombra fredda, c'è un palazzo di smeraldo e un lago che, quando si lancia un sasso contro la sua immobilità, si arrabbia e ringhia. E il cielo, finalmente. (Arriva la notte e la luna fiammeggia sullo sfondo, ornata di stelle capricciose. Silenzio! Per le strade la vita si è allontanata. Attraverso il pozzo l'anima fugge verso il profondo. Si guarda attraverso di esso come l'altra faccia del crepuscolo. E sembra che un gigante, padrone di tutti i segreti, stia per uscire dalla sua bocca. O labirinto immobile e magico, parco ombroso e profumato, sala magnetica e incantata!) - Ascolta, Platero, se un giorno mi getterò in questo pozzo, non sarà per uccidermi, credimi, ma per cogliere più in fretta le stelle. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

With a few tweaks, Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame could be one of the studio's finest. As is, the movie is strong but suffers from out of place, awkward humor throughout. Let’s preface this review by adding that we’re evaluating the animated film and just the film. If you're looking for an accurate adaptation of the book, this isn't it. If that's what you want, you've got no business here.

In 1482 Paris, Judge Claude Frollo (voiced by Tony Jay) is a malicious, unjust, and xenophobic despot. High in the towers of Notre Dame lives his adopted “son”, a deformed hunchback cruelly named Quasimodo (voiced by Tom Hulce). Alone inside the stone walls of the cathedral, he dreams of belonging to the outside world. When a gypsy named Esmeralda (Demi Moore) captures Frollo's heart, the judge’s lust and rage threaten all of Paris.

This film sets itself apart from other Disney classics with its sinister and tragic tone. Quasimodo is deformed and grotesque. Even with a kind heart, he stands no chance with Esmeralda - particularly while she and the Captain of the Guard, Phoebus (Kevin Kline) make eyes at each other. Several tense sequences take dark turns as Frollo expresses his racism towards the Romani (Gypsy) and willingness to do anything in order to pass the blame he should bear onto others. Quasimodo is frequently subjected to cruelty. The downtrodden are frequently stomped on. There’s a tragic undertone as Quasimodo speaks to his only friends, stone statues he "brings to life" with his imagination. The majestic skyline of 15th century Paris, towering cathedral representing both a prison and hope to those seeking sanctuary, it’s powerful stuff.

This film benefits from a truly great villain. You love to hate Frollo. Though he's been changed from archdeacon to a judge, he remains edgy. You might've seen other children's stories proclaiming the importance of not judging others on their appearance but this character makes The Hunchback of Notre Dame stands out and more suitable for older audiences than little kids. The Judge paints himself as a devout Christian but commits horrid crimes. While nothing is ever explicitly said, a vivid scene in which he imagines Esmeralda dancing shows his lust for her. He's irredeemably evil but human.

The city is wonderfully brought to life through Quasimodo's viewpoint. We've got memorable songs with tunes unique among Disney's roster. The voice actors are excellent, the message great, climax breathtaking. What's not to like? The gargoyles. This is not a comedy but it doesn't stop Charles Kimbrough, Jason Alexander, and Mary Wickes' stone buffoons from trying to make you laugh. Crotch shots, fart jokes, a gargoyle wanting to romance a goat, cross-dressing gags all bring the picture to a screeching halt. They give the crappy robot from Treasure Planet a run for its money as “worst and unnecessary comedic sidekick in an animated film”. I wish the film had predated home video so it could've been “lost” and then “found” again years later with some footage “unfortunately missing”.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is not frequently mentioned among Walt Disney's essentials, which is a shame. It contains heart-wrenching drama, powerful imagery, a moving story, and unforgettable moments. Visually, it's a knockout from the backgrounds to the character designs and atmosphere. It’s a movie so good the one flaw it has becomes that much harder to ignore. Don't let that keep you away from viewing (or revisiting) The Hunchback of Notre Dame. You may cringe when it gets "funny" but the rest is worth it. (On Blu-ray, June 5, 2015)

Haute Horlogerie and artisanal work for a breath-tacking result The case of the Girard-Perregaux La Esmeralda Tourbillon “A Secret” Eternity Edition is just an introduction to the dial. Constructed with the principle of the three bridges, as a worthy successor of the original La Esmeralda pocket watch, the dial takes a step further and introduces an unusual take – the upper and lower bridge present horses as micro sculpt The upper bridge features a running horse on the right. The bridge received the Girard-Perregaux‘s distinctive ending with chamfered and polished edges. The mid-section was rounded and polished by hand. A chaton fixed with two screws (also finished by hand) holds the jewel for the main barrel. The rhodium-plated spring barrel was decorated with engravings and gilded details. The emotion of the active horse is well transmitted and I love the “frozen in time” silhouette. The lower bridge presents an even more dramatic action with the horse depicted in a high-speed run. With the tail flapping in the wind, the engraving overflow with emotions of “wild, young and free”. This bridge is keeping the tourbillon via a jewel fixed in the same manner: a chaton hold in place by two polished screws. The tourbillon is constructed in a very traditional way with a lira-shaped cage. A thermally blued “hand” is used for the running seconds’ indication. The steel lira was hand filed and polished. Blue screws hold the cage together. One can notice the acute angle present for the delight of the connoisseurs. The gold balance wheel is regulated with the help of gold timing screws – a lot of them. That means the chronometric precision is an important factor but also increase the time need to correct set every screw. The timming screws are crucial for the chronometric behaviour in various position. The time is indicated by two large faceted douphine hands held by the central, largest bridge. The time is hoovering over a guilloché pattern, performed using a traditional rose-engine lathe. This final touch is a trasnlucent Grand Feu enamel that reveals the guilloché.
