Reasons To Like Rosa
I recently watched Isaura the Slave (1976-77), a Brazilian soap opera, and really liked it.
My favorite character early in the show was Rosa and I want to talk about her. Spoilers ahead!
Rosa was cool. Reasons to like Rosa:
She’s a slave, but she’s afraid of no man. In my opinion lack of fear in the face of inevitable oppression is an admirable quality.
She knows how to use her owners and the slave driver for personal benefits. She mainly uses her sexuality and charm to achieve this, which could be seen as exploitive in her situation, but it’s more complicated than that, as I’ll explain in the next point. She also likes to touch and try on the owners’ jewelry while nobody’s looking. Normally this is morally wrong, but if you’re literally a slave to these people, why not?
She’s a huge “objectifier” of men, often commenting on how hot they are and trying to get with them, both other slaves and free men. She is not just pretending to be attracted to them to gain benefits. This is probably not a common quality in main heroines of telenovelas, who are supposed to be chaste and virgins until marriage (the main heroine, Isaura, is a good example), or at worst lose their virginity to a deceitful man who then refuses to marry them. But there is nothing morally superior about that. The main heroine of these stories usually possesses uncommon, striking beauty, which makes many male characters fall at her feet, and put a high price on her love, while a more ordinary looking female character doesn’t have this level of “pretty privilege” and has to lean on other factors to achieve the same success with men. A pervy woman can be a heroine, too.
She helped André when he was being punished by the slave owner, twice. But she also is petty, and envious because Isaura has more male attention and pretty dresses than her. That makes her morally grey and interesting, just like a real person.
She’s a bit of a troll, for better and worse. One of her dumbest and most chaos-inducing pranks is definitely one where she sets up a “date” between Isaura and Leoncio by sending Leôncio a falsified letter from Isaura and telling Isaura her father is going to meet her there. It’s hard to tell if she just wanted to prank Isaura or was trying to “help out” Leoncio like a shipper writing a poorly thought out fanfic, but this ended up putting Leoncio in a very embarrassing situation, when he got his hopes up and then dashed by a very confused Isaura. The prank also lead to something extraordinary, which is Isaura becoming enraged for the first and only time in the series and giving Rosa a beating, despite being a very stoic, sweet and refined person usually. And so Rosa not only owned the villain of the show, but also lead to the main heroine’s character development. lol.
Next up, a post on Reasons To Dislike Rosa!

A Escrava Isaura…

When Cait married Tony she said they would honeymoon in Italy when it, meaning OL, was over. Good way to get it paid for by OL related appearance next March. Too bad she has to put up with Sam for a couple of hours. Sam, who said many times how he hated S2 costumes and was teased much by Meril, because he didn't like the feminine look. Too much like his true nature. He will certainly bring one of his prostitutes over past 3 years, Ashley being the latest, if her unnecessary week in UK last week for for anything else. 4 trips to Scotland for her in a year. It's clear which business she's really in.
Dear Business She Is Really In Anon,
I think you should be ashamed of yourself, for writing plain libel with no other arguments than your own twisted, bitter and irrelevant world view. If you consider that Ashley Hearn is a prostitute, just because she traveled four times to Scotland since late May 2024, then you are nothing more than a sad, sad troll, who thinks thousands of other women who happen to work in the marketing and sales sectors, all over the world, are also whores, right? You know very well all her trips have been more than thoroughly documented and you also know they did have a tangible impact, as far as that company is concerned. You should also get your fucking timeline straight before you treat us to your word vomit, because even the hatred you gratuitously spread around must have, technically speaking, at least some modicum of plausibility. She did not start to work for SS one year ago, punk: she started to work for them on May 21st 2024, which is exactly six months.

When C married McGill there is no way for you to tell what she said. You weren't there, you are a damn Social Zero and you just rely on word-of-mouth and ridiculously contradictory press releases and interviews. A honeymoon takes a week-end perhaps only in your shanty town and making the ball's organizers 'pay for it' is beyond ridiculous, including as far as C herself might be concerned (what is she, a cheap profiteer?) - supposing that 'relationship' would be anything more than a mutually convenient arrangement of sorts, of course. Sorry, but not the case.
Yeah, too bad she had to put up with S, against all odds, for eleven years, now. This is what really wrecks your pea brain, right? That, and being proven wrong and embarrassingly dumb, over and over again.
For your next endeavor, I suggest you'd turn your attention to your homeland telenovelas (you misspelled Maril Davis' name like a Brazilian and that is a dead giveaway).
youtube
You may wonder why I still answer your tragically ridiculous comments? Well, because it is time for someone to shame you and also show the true, dull and derisory colors of your stupid monomania.
[Later edit]: in no way did I want to imply anything negative about Brazil or its culture. I could have definitely better used one of the bajillion other Globo productions, dealing with Carioca intrigue and/or football wives. If I haven't, it is just because Escrava Isaura was a huge international success even in the Nineties, and remembered as such by many. While I am sensitive to the social and political inacceptable problem of slavery, I maintain that the 1976 adaptation of Guimarães's novel is simplistic and formulaic enough, hence more appropriate for Anon. I am sorry if my poor joke was construed differently and I apologize to all the people who might be offended. If you know me, you'd also know I am probably the last person to disrespect your country and culture.

a Mayara gosta de novelas ? Qual é a preferida dela ?
Sim, a May é noveleira de carteirinha!!
Hehe... Oxe 😰"

Reasons to Dislike Rosa
This is my second post about Rosa, and it will be all about her worst personal flaws. Spoilers ahead.
I really liked her in the first half of the show. She seemed like the type of character that could easily become a heroine, as heel-face and face-heel turns are common (and fun) in telenovelas. There is a scene where Isaura tells her she’ll regret her actions one day, which made me think she’ll achieve her goal of making Isaura miserable and maybe it will either fail to make her happy or make her unhappy and she’d rethink her villainy. But the writers had other plans.
As she show progressed, Rosa became more and more of a bully. Although the show is not explicitly Christian, I had the impression that certain characters were supposed to exemplify Christian virtues (Isaura) and others exemplified sins. Rosa was an example of how envy can lead to misery. My list of reasons to dislike Rosa will take that view into account and be more like a list of life lessons we can gain from Rosa’s story. As a character she’s perfect as she is.
She has crab in a bucket mentality. When Isaura finds a romantic relationship and a chance at freedom, Rosa does her best to sabotage it. When her best friend Rita gets moved to work in the house instead of her usual job, Rosa becomes suspicious of her and accuses her of not talking to her anymore (it’s not clear if it’s true, but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence for this). If another person’s life is improving, it makes Rosa feel bad. Either it feels like an injustice, or like that person will leave her behind.
She misattributes where injustice is coming from. There is plenty of racism and classism even in the kind characters in the show, and Rosa seems to be the only one to sense it, even though she can’t explicitly name it. That is, the show is good, but it reflects the views of that time, even though it’s progressive and against slavery. Even the good white characters in the show don’t always immediately recognize slavery as wrong. There is a reason why Isaura has a ton of people trying to free her, while other slaves do not. It is easier to empathize with someone like yourself, which is why these people are surprised and shocked when they meet Isaura, a white educated person, and learn that she is a slave. Only later does this empathy extend to black slaves. And even many black slave characters seem to put Isaura first, saying she doesn’t belong doing manual labor among the blacks. Slavery did a number on their self-esteem. Rosa is not wrong to notice that Isaura has unearned privileges, she is wrong in concluding Isaura either is getting them all through manipulation or using her influence in ways that are harmful to others. Perhaps it’s because she doesn’t know Isaura the way we, the viewers, do. Or because she’s used to using manipulation as a survival strategy and can’t fathom how another attractive woman can get ahead without using it.
She’d rather ruin another slave’s life than the enslaver’s. This is very common and human, for example nowadays you can see many people attacking each other online. Men vs women, democrat vs republican, native vs immigrant, and everyone believes they are “punching up” while it’s more like sideways punching, while the real ruling class is largely ignored.
She has an opportunity to learn a lesson at one point in the show, but doesn’t. While Leoncio is away on his year long Europe trip, Rosa convinces Francisco to put Isaura through various “humiliations” such as wearing common outfits, making cloth with the other slave women and washing floors. Isaura is also depressed because her fiancé died a horrible painful death. Rosa gets what she wants, but none of this makes Rosa happy. This is where Rosa could have changed, but didn’t. She could have stopped to think that perhaps what you want isn’t always what you need. Or she could have gotten some satisfaction out of seeing her enemy lose social status and suffer, and felt like injustice was removed and justice restored. Or even recognized that Isaura, despite being an arrogant princess (in Rosa’s head) got punishment that is disproportionate to the crime. But Rosa doubles down instead.
She is (in my opinion) willfully blind. I think perhaps deep down she can feel that Isaura is not the arrogant princess she accuses her of, and not the enemy to take out her anger on, but it’s easier to stick to that than admit that slave life sucks, that you can’t always seduce and manipulate your way out of grave injustice and into a dignified life you deserve, and that you can’t always take revenge on those who ruined your life. The reason I think Rosa knows Isaura is a good person is the scene where she is confiscating her dresses. She accuses Isaura of wearing fancy dresses while other slave girls are cold and lacking clothes. Poor Isaura tries to defend herself saying she’d give them all to the girls if she knew they needed them. But Rosa says “I don’t want you to give me the dresses, I want to TAKE them from you!” No acts of kindness and no amount of suffering can sway Rosa, because the incentive to avoid reality is too big. That’s sad, because Isaura could have been a useful ally.
She doesn’t love anyone. The men she has affairs with are either sex objects or useful resources. Women are either rivals or friends until they get a more prestigious job. Even herself Rosa doesn’t seem to love, as she’d rather be a slave or go to jail forever, than let Isaura have a good life.
To summarize, Rosa is cool and smart, but behind her coolness hides a cynical and insecure person, and that’s no way to live.
Thanks for reading my interpretation of Rosa! ^_^
