Escape From Happydale by Jack Quaid
“The universal symbol that one is simply not fucking around.”
Synopsis
Stephen King meets Quentin Tarantino
At the end of every horror movie, one girl always survives the deadly slasher… In this case, Parker Ames not only survives, she turns the tables and dedicates her life to hunting and destroying the monsters that stalk slumber parties and campsites all across the country.
Ten years after the horrific events known as the Massacre at Coffin Bay, Parker’s world has been flipped totally upside down. She’s no longer the nerdy teenage girl who would run and hide from the things that go bump in the night. Now Parker is the thing that goes bump in the night.
After years of traveling the country and hunting some of the world’s most dangerous slashers, Parker returns home when she hears that Hurricane Williams, the deranged slasher who slaughtered her family, has resurfaced and continued his killing spree. Armed with her trusty chain saw, affectionately named Aerosmith, she sets out on a path of revenge and redemption.
If you love 80s horror movies and killer books like My Best Friend’s Exorcism, you’ll love Escape from Happydale.
Start reading this scary 80s, hack ‘n’ slash masterpiece now!
My Rating: 3.5 Stars
I had a lot of fun reading this book. I was hooked after a few pages, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Supernatural Season 1 vibes it gave me. You got to see this survivor become the thing that monsters have to be scared of. I liked that it was mostly structured to hit the beats of a good horror movie, of seeing Parker survive her monster and going on to save other girls like her while she hunts and pursues the one that is still looking for her. It’s not at all a happy story, but by god, it’s so much fun to read.
I really liked the writing style, and it’s a short read and fast paced, so you’ll speed through it. It was cheesy, the way most 80's horror movies are cheesy. But I can tell it would be just as fun on a reread the way those movies are. You don't go into this expecting high-brow stuff, so honestly just sit back and enjoy the tropey suspense and fun and root for Parker. She could use some cheering on.
Escape from Bastard Town by Jack Quaid
Synopsis
Parker Ames is back… well, kinda.
She’s been out of the hacking and slashing business for over a year. The killer teddy bears, haunted cars and the downright weirdness of it all was just too much for her. But when a couple of kids from an isolated Alaskan town need her help with a slasher that’s putting a severe dent in the population, she can’t say no.
But does Parker still have what it takes to confront evil head on?
If you love 80s horror movies and killer books like My Best Friend’s Exorcism you’ll love this next installment of Jack Quaid’s Last Final Girl series.
My Rating: 3.5 stars
After a hunt gone wrong, Parker decides to put down the chainsaw and walk away from the hunting business. But when some kids come asking for her help, she can't help but go back in.
This book was just as fun as the last. The story kept escalating from ridiculous situation to ridiculous situation and it doesn't care if you think it makes sense, it's taking you along for the ride. This sequel is what happens when Cabin in the Woods meets Parker. And she sure as hell is getting out of there. Lots of fun, really do recommend it.
Escape From Slaughter Beach by Jack Quaid
Synopsis
Hurricane Williams is back—and he wants revenge!
Ten years after her showdown with deranged killer Hurricane Williams, Parker Ames has left all her hacking and slashing ways behind her. She used to spend her nights beheading slashers and washing blood from her hair. Now her nights are spent going to PTA meetings and helping her daughter with her home work… and she couldn’t be happier.
That is until Hurricane Williams rolls into town with a score to settle.
My Rating: 4 Stars
You know what, I loved this one. It was my favorite of the three. The domesticity, the hunting, the FAMILY BUSINESS. It was fun, suspenseful in all the right ways, and still just as campy. I adored it. I'm really happy with the way it ended, not a happily ever after but still with all the loose ends tied up. Great read.

Ordinary Hazards: A Memoir [Wordsong, $19.99, hc, 9781629798813] by Nikki Grimes - Nikki survived her childhood with her writing. She and her sister Carol had an alcoholic mother who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and a father who spent more and more time away from home. During one of their mother's crashes, the girls were placed in a foster home. They stole money and escaped, bused across town, and knocked on their grandmother's door, only to be told that they could sleep there temporarily, but they couldn't stay—she didn't feel like raising any more kids. After that the sisters were split up and sent to separate foster homes, one bad and one good, but even in the good home, Nikki often felt totally alone in the world. When she was finally sent back to her mother, the situation wasn't much better. For reasons her mother never explained, her sister wasn't allowed to live with them, and her mother had a live-in boyfriend who thought Nikki was fair game for his desires. But during this time Nikki was also able to rebuild her relationship with her father, who thought he wasn't fit to raise young girls, but still loved his daughters. Thanks to a teacher who wouldn't take anything short of her best efforts, Nikki was able to take her love of writing, which had started as a comfort and an affirmation of who she was, and transform it into prose and poems that reached out to other children in pain. A celebration of the power that words have to lift and sustain.

I Want a Dog [Dial Books, $17.99, hc, 9780525555469] by Jon Agee - At Happydale Animal Shelter there are lots of interesting creatures, but there aren't any dogs. And when the small girl says that a dog is what she wants, the proprietor tries to talk her into an armadillo, a baby baboon, a boa constrictor, and a goldfish. Finally he gets “the dog”, but it's not a dog; it's really a lizard in a dog costume. Will the small girl go home with an empty wagon, or can the proprietor find something she'll like just as well? A cute story with a nice twist at the end.
