One Last Time Everyone!
Well, guys. We made it...to the LAST post of the ESC 2024 season! After months of anticipation, joy, heartbreak, and anger, we finally made it to the end! And like the semis, I have a bit to unpack!
To begin, I would feel rather terrible if I didn't talk about the disqualification of Joost Klein and the Netherlands. I think I'm in agreement with a lot of people that the disqualification was harsh and that the EBU and Eurovision screwed up with this decision; a common theme this year.
My sister didn't have an iconic quote today. But let me tell you when Andrejs (of Sudden Lights so you may know where this is going) started giving Latvia's points I was squealing.
A common theme throughout the entire season (even National Finals) were that the bookmakers were wrong a LOT of the time this year. And boy were they!
NORWAY LAST?! Okay. Maybe Ulveham isn't for everyone. But I had it as my shock winner so...ouch.
There were a LOT of televote shockers, but it all made sense in the end when Croatia sprung up to the top, almost taking the win.
As for the countries that broke their NQ streaks...Ireland finished a very nice 6th place (congrats Bambie!), Latvia finished in 16th (well done Dons!), and Georgia ranked in 21st (well done Nusta!).
Before I go to talking about the winner, I would like to say that while worst case scenario did NOT happen, there is still a long way to go. Hopefully, the EBU will see us fans and eventually listen to what we want and do the proper actions.
Now...THE WINNER! This year, we came down to Croatia vs. Switzerland for the win. Croatia seemingly won the televote (correct me if I'm wrong), and Switzerland won the jury vote. And either way, history would have been made. And honestly...I wouldn't be mad if either of them won I love both songs dearly. And...because NEMO FROM SWITZERLAND WON WITH "THE CODE," this makes Nemo the first non-binary participant to win Eurovision (again, correct me if I'm wrong). So, Nemo, from the bottom of my heart, Congratulations on winning the 68th Eurovision Song Contest! Your name is etched into Eurovision history forever, and I look forward to next year in Switzerland.
Well, that reaches the end of Aijamisespava...for now. I'm going to take a much-needed summer break listening to music and doing things with people I love. The last couple weeks took a LOT out of me and your girl needs to recharge! But that doesn't mean I don't want to hang out with you guys! You are people I love too, and I can't just leave you in the dust! As I mentioned, I have a second Tumblr page. See, I'm a writer (how could you ever tell haha) called @amykitrynswritingmisadventures (long like Estonia's song title). Every day, I post a line that I wrote that I like, and I'll be more active on there this summer. My Instagram (where I'm nowhere near as Eurovision...y...as here) is justastargirl9 and I look to post a bit more on there soon (plus you get the same lines...but with music). Those are probably the best places to find me and say hello, and see what other music I listen to!
Now, before the ramonda blooms and the party's over, signing out.
Love, Aijamisespava

Have very mixed feelings this time ahead of watching esc grand final. It's definitely the worst year so far in my experience of watching esc. I'm gonna watch anyway to see how well my country (Ukraine) does. But i don't have the same excitement as always to see the actual show fully. I realize how it's gonna probably end (after everything that happened these last days). And i'm dreading to see this. I hope i'm wrong and the person who really deserves it wins (i'm gonna vote for my favourites). But it's such a shame this esc season had to end like this. I'm upset.

Eurovision 2005 - Number 25 - Wig Wam - "In My Dreams"
youtube
A scandal-free national final?! The first act to truly bring metal to a Eurovision audience?! Norway, in 2005, you're doing it right. Wig Wam are a schlager-infused rock blast of fresh air in a year of girl bops and controversy. In their own bombastic, spandex-clad way, they're a harbinger of things to come, but ever moreso, they represent the beginning of the end of the mid-2000s Eurovision experience.
They're a rock 'n' roll revolution alright.
Having come close to Eurovision in Melodi Grand Prix 2004, Wig Wam managed to win 2005 in a classic national final. Eight songs in a final, a four-way 'Gold' final and a very evenly split televote. The televote may have been announced regionally but what mattered were the total number of televotes. It's far less easy to quibble with than any arcane points system (Austria, please take notes).
In My Dreams is a classic blast of peak 80s hair metal that took glam rock to its heart. Glam, Teeny, Flash and Sporty are the metal Spice Boys. Feather boa, bandana, scarf tied to the mic-stand, one-piece, figure-hugging body suit that hides nothing, all the tropes are present and correct. This is pure fun, wearing joyful rock exuberance and fringed sleeves.
Leading off with a snippet of the blasting chorus, it settles down into the chugging verse, filled with guitar licks and riffs and then it's back to the anthemic, cheeky chorus that everyone can sing along to. It's a stadium filler, and it doesn't let up. There's even a key change to fulfil its ecstatic Eurovision duties.
On the night of Eurovision, this stood out. It wasn't the only rock song, but it was the definitive rock song of the evening. No form of metal music had ever been on the Eurovision stage to this point. It blasted away notions of what could be on that stage musically and offered a way forward, away from the pop.
National finals had been trying to do this for a while. 2004 in particular had a wide range of musical genres including quite a bit of rock of different styles. None of them made it. 2005, in truth, had seen less of it as broadcasters went for what seemed to be the winning strategy, but Norway bucked the trend.
In the Eurovision semi-final, Wig Wam cruised through in a safe sixth place, then managed a top ten finish for Norway in ninth place, in a little cluster of rock songs on the scoreboard. A significant section of the voting Eurovision audience wanted some rock. Wig Wam showed us that the ice that had been quietly creeping in to freeze Eurovision into a pop-meta, could be melted. The process could be reversed and we'd all be smiling as it did so. Here's to 2006.
Wig Wam are still touring and writing music. They recently wrote the theme song for HBO Max DC Universe series Peacemaker, which seems appropriate. They haven't changed.

Switzerland wins the Eurovision Song Contest 2024
Switzerland, represented by Nemo with The Code wins the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with a total of 591 points.
The jury's favorite has obtained enough advantage so that, in the face of televoting, she could finish above her most direct rivals Croatia, with Rim Tim Tagi Dim from Baby Lasagna, France, with Slimane's Mon Amour and Ukraine, with Alyona Alyona & Herry Heil and your Teresa & Maria.
Tumblr media
So, see you next year in Switzerland with many questions to resolve.
Will Geneva be the venue in 2025? Or maybe Zurich?
Will Israel participate next year? And The Netherlands?
Will the EBU investigate Israel's strange and bulky result in the televoting?

Norway Has Chosen!
After the last few weeks, Norway has given us big joys and heartbreak with the Melodi Grand Prix...and all of that has acclimated to what I'm about to write right now.
Norway will send...."Ulveham" by Gåte!
This is literally the best decision Norway has made. The song is absolutely beautiful and from what I've seen, a LOT of people like it, which will help with their chances in an all-televote semi. I will say this, though. Gåte sounds a lot like Within Temptation. Both are women-led (love to see it), and "Ulveham" sounds like something Within Temptation would release. I mean this incredibly nicely. Plus, if Gåte does well, I do know the lead singer of WT is Dutch so maybe....we could see? It's a thought I've had as the Melodi Grand Prix unfolded, and I think it's really cool that music I listen to outside of Eurovision is going to Eurovision.
Congratulations, Gåte on your win! Your song and performance are going to look AMAZING on the stage!
