Retconned Names for “The Loa” (Hazbin Hotel)

I’ve decided to retcon the names of my DeviantArt OCs. These are their new names: 

Papa Legba (Papa Lébat) → Big Papa / The Doorkeeper

Damballah → Sir Duke / Grandfather Serpent

Baron Samedi → Baron de la Mort (The Baron)

Maman Brigitte → Maman de la Vie (Grann Manman)

Erzulie Dantor → Lady Love

Ogun (Ogou Feray) → Ironman

Erzulie Freda → Lady Rose

("The Baron of Death" and "Maman la Vie" are Scrapped Concepts. They are now demons named "Lanmò" and "Lavi")

They mostly have song-themed names now.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure!!!

To signify their importance to 19th century New Orleans Vodou, the characters inspired by Papa Legba and Damballah each have two names. Sir Duke is also called Grandfather Serpent, as a reference to “Grandfather Rattlesnake”, who probably has a common origin with Damballah. 

For now, I am still calling them “The Loa”, but I’m fine with changing this to “lesser gods” if that’s offensive. It’s pretty obvious who inspired the lesser gods!

I rant about the rationale behind this decision below the cut: 

After thinking about this seriously, I think it is irresponsible to name these characters after the actual deities.

I’ve grappled with this dilemma, since this really does break the naming convention of this show. If the St. Peter-type character is still named “St. Peter”, why should an exception be made? Because Vodou isn’t like Christianity. Christianity is the majority religion in America, and many other places in the world; Vodou is a minority religion that has this horrible history of demonization and mischaracterization. This goes all the way back to the 1800s (and earlier!), and has continued into the present day, with pieces of popular media like The Princess and the Frog and American Horror Story.

Whenever they appear in popular media, the lwa (or, characters named after them) are usually designed / written by people outside the Vodou community. As a consequence of this, outsiders have spread misinformation about Vodou and damaged the reputation of the community. Fans of Hazbin Hotel understand that these characters aren’t actually the deities they’re named after. But this context is not readily apparent to those outside of this fandom. If you don’t change their names, people will think that this show is trying to present commentary on the actual deities. Criticisms of cultural appropriation would be warranted.

We have to consider the popularity of a show like Hazbin Hotel, and the effects this has. If you search “St. Peter”, you’re not going to find “St. Peter (Hazbin Hotel)” in the top results. Again, Christianity is the majority religion in America. But if they existed in the cast, it is likely that images of “The Loa (Hazbin Hotel)” would pop up when someone searches for [insert name of actual lwa]. 

And this isn’t just any fandom... Let’s be real here. The Hazbin Hotel fandom is just full of horny little bitches (CAN”T RELATE!!!!). THE GOD OF WAR MASCULINITY AND BLACKSMITHING has no shot at ever appearing in the canon of Hazbin Hotel. But if he ever did, and his character design was actually good, there would be a shitton of bara porn of him…!

DUDE!!!!!! WHAT”S THE OPPOSITE OF A JIMMY NEUTRON BRAIN BLAST MOMENT????

IMAGINE someone going online, just trying to find information about how to pray to / perform a sacrifice for the lwa, and yeah. A bunch of Hazbin Hotel hen ties and hot ass yaois pop up!!!

In all seriousness, it’s legitimately awful!

This is why I think it’s just irresponsible to name them after the actual deities. It’s just really disrespectful to the people who worship them!

On top of this, let’s consider Papa Legba specifically. Here, my “Papa Legba”-type character is clearly this weird Steven’s Universe fusion of Papa Legba and Dahomean Legba. I actually think it is completely warranted to pay tribute to Dahomean Legba, as he is the spiritual father of all jazz and blues musicians.

It’s a show about singing and history!!!!!

But this is how Papa Legba is portrayed in New Orleans Voodoo:

Not only has he been widely misrepresented in popular media! He is arguably the single most important lwa from New Orlean Vodou, especially to someone like Alastor who was born at the end of the 19th century!

It must be COMPLETELY sacrilegious to equate Papa Legba with Dahomean Legba!!!

I love him so much….but if you’ve seen what Dahomean Legba looks like…you know what I’m talking about… (THERE”S A REASOIN HE”S LIKE THIS, OK???!!!!)

It is not AT ALL my intent to equate those two deities, but if this character is named “Papa Legba”, that intent is not readily apparent!

I’m also afraid that I made “Big Papa” look too goofy. THIS IS GOING TO BLOW YOUR MIND but not everyone reads One Piece. It pains me to say this…b-but even Edwar D. Newgate looks a lil fuckin stupid to people who don’t read One Piece…!

To people who don’t read One Piece, this really could be read as “Holy shit!! You’re trying to make Papa Legba – arguably single most important lwa from New Orleans Vodou – look like a goofy fucking idiot!”

NO!!!!! I”M TRYING TO MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE MONKEY D. GARP BECAUSE I LOVE MONKEY D. GARP!!!!!!

…But yeah. This is why I decided to just change his name. He’s just called “Big Papa” now. I’m also going to try to tone down the goofiness a bit more. I’m really not trying to make him look like a goofy fucking idiot. My intent is to give him range, where he can be playful but also dignified and imposing when the situation calls for it. I actually want him to be a cool character!

Anyways, here’s trivia regarding the new names:

For the most part, they have song-themed names. “Big Papa” is derived from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa”. “Sir Duke” is derived from Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke”. “Lady Love” is derived from Lou Rawls’ “Lady Love”.  “Lady Rose” is derived from Louis Armstrong’s “La Vie En Rose”. The two Erzulie-type characters are both “Lady–” something, and their names are references to love songs because they are goddesses of love.

Originally, I was going to call the Ogou Feray-type character GOD WARRIOR because I love Marguerite D. Perrin, but that’s a stupid fucking name, and you can’t give who is arguably the single most important lwa a stupid fucking name! He is now named “Ironman” as a reference to Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”. I don’t know if Tony D. Stark would let you get away with this…but this is what he’s named in my fanfiction.

When I have time, I do plan to go back and fix up the tags and issue a notice on my AO3 account. It just might take me a while to get around to this.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE PORTRAYAL OF VODOU

Because I am FULLY INSANE, I love to think to myself “What if the boys were actually in the canon of Hazbin Hotel?”

OBVIOUSLY no NSFW merch should be sold of them. As far as merch is concerned, they should be treated like St. Peter (Hazbin Hotel). If any merch of them was sold, the profits should be donated to the New Orleans Vodou community.  Not the commercialized side of it, that’s full of white people who are bastardizing Vodou. The ACTUAL keepers of the tradition, who are going to be of African descent. The thought THE LWA getting turned into commercialized products is just horrible to me… Donating all profits to the people who should actually receive it would really make the world a better place!

I share these thoughts, but ultimately it really doesn’t matter AT ALL what I think should be done. What actually matters is the opinion of people in the New Orleans Voodoo community. If the approach is not to retcon Alastor and to add more Voodoo-related elements to the show, surely the creative team behind Hazbin Hotel should hire consultants with expertise and connections to this community.

For example, I imagine my depiction of The Baron of Death is controversial. I REALLY tried not to emasculate him, but I think his depiction could be read the wrong way. There is a side of Vodou that is accepting of the LGBTQ community; there is another side that is very much not accepting of it. The consultant should have the final say on whether it’s OK to make one of these characters an actual trans headcanon. If the consultant is like “this is really uncomfortable and disrespectful”, then this should go on the cutting room floor. As I’ve touched on before, even LGBTQ communities have a problem with misrepresenting minority cultures. It is more important to portray this culture accurately, and their deities respectfully. There are other creative ways to work in LGBTQ (specifically, trans) rep into the show!

Another example: The inclusion of Ironman. I’m so CRAZY for even thinking about this… Kratos (God of War) has no shot at popping into Precure! But yeah. I would not want to exclude him due to his chief importance, but it is in fact inevitable that the horny ass bitches (like myself…) in this fandom will draw bara of THE BLACKSMITHING WARRIOR GOD OF MASCULINITY.  If the consultant is like “don’t include him” for this reason, then just don’t include him.

Hot and Cool Spirits

A basic tenant of herbology is the idea that some herbs are heating and others cooling. Rooted in Chinese medicine, this belief holds ancient roots and has been used to cure issues of circulation, soothe fevers, and even been employed to aid against less physical ailments, like pervasive lethargy. Growing up, I was taught which herbs were ‘hot’ and which were ‘cool’, a fascinating dychodamy that felt both intuitive and scientific. 

When I first moved to New Orleans it was not long before I came in contact with Vodouizans. By nature of where I was studying in the city there was a large number of Haitian students whose family observed these traditions and their children held close to these ideas. There was one girl in particular who I remember being deeply fond of the spirit Erzulie Freda, a popular lwa of love, beauty, and money. In my mind, it was her who I first heard the idea of a “cool” spirit from, though in truth it has been many years and I do not recall with clarity. I was immediately taken with this idea, that spirits operate in a similar medical ecology than that I had been raised with. Within Vodou, this manifested as the nations of spirits known as lwa. In many times this manifested as due to the history of that spirit family, at other times they were grouped because of this seemingly shared nature. In the case of Erzulie Freda, a Rada lwa, she was a cool spirit. However, her sister Erzulie Dantor was honored as a queen within the Petro nation, a very hot family of spirits. 

As a reflection of my own practice, I work with a typically very hot family of spirits. Not only does this reflect my living Basque family, which is loud and boisterous and fierce in their form of love, but it also reflects the fiery and chthonic nature which our gods took in pre-christian times. Diviners who have worked with me over the years have described my family of spirits as leaving them fevered or sessions ending in a flash of heat. Likewise those few who have been in my presence during theurgical spellwork or received healings from me have experienced it as an intense heat which burns away the impurities but leaves them sweating and often physically drained. A quirk of my magic deeply tied to the particular spirits who enact it. 

Thinking about spirits in this way I believe to create a holistic way of understanding the medicines behind the spirits we work with. Where they thrive and where another hand may be better suited. While this practice may not be applicable in many European practices, within the context of my own it has found a fond home as a method of self-understanding. Likewise, experimenting with exactly which epithets call upon the Anderexo and her consort in hot or cool manifestations has allowed me to improve and improvise my healing style from a technical-theurgy side which feels uniquely apt to a revivalist practice. If nothing else, it provides an interesting outlook into the ways in which medicines and spirits interact and intersect!

Below I will delve a bit more into story stuff/symbolism

Few little facts about the design before I get into the Vodou stuff:

Both her and Charles have snake eyes! This is meant to represent them becoming less human as they begin to slowly achieve immortality. The Lwa he calls upon, Damballa is a serpent and I wanted to make Chucky and Tiff embody false versions of him and his wife Ayida-Weddo. As they delve deeper into the practice and twist its meaning into something more sinister, they lose their humanity in a physical way.

I included the ring from Bride as a part of Tiff’s design since they do end up getting married.

The piece in the middle of Tiffany’s corset is her Heart of Damballa, it was stolen from John during one of their visits. The design is taken from an unused version that was from a deleted scene in the original Child’s Play.

Symbolism:

While Chucky is meant to be parallel to Damballa; Tiff is supposed to parallel Ayida-Weddo. Who is Damballa’s wife and his female aspect. Though this is the initial thought I had she is far more aligned with the things that Erzulie Freda, who is the lover of Damballa, represents instead. Freda being the Lwa of love and beauty. Coincidentally she is also represented with a symbol VERY similar to Tiff’s tattoo. A heart with a sword piercing through it.

So for now that is it for Tiff until I delve a little deeper into the organization of the timeline and story.

In closing I just want to add that although I’ve done a lot of research on this topic, I don’t regard myself as a mouthpiece for the Vodou religion or Haitian culture. I will be doing everything I can to treat the topic with the respect it deserves.

Perfumes Used in Your Practice.

In this post I'll wanna talk about perfumes or (parfum) in French and colognes. Now if you seen my other post on colognes I talk about this I a older post link at the bottom. In this post I want to dive a little deeper on these threes by .L.T.Piver

These are some that popular in Haitian Vodou, New Orleans Voodoo, Puerto Rico Espiritismo, Sanse , Santeria and so on. These are all ADR religions. All these perfume or lotions is what there were called are good for spiritual bath and what someone like me would use them for.

But let's get into it; starting with the earliest one.

Starting with the 1885, Alphonse Heliotrope Blanc”, the first Eau de Cologne. This is another good one can be used in protecting and ward off negative energy, bad energies, Great for spiritual baths like cleanings can be added with coconut water Florida water etc for your baths.

Next we have Reve d'Or: Released in 1889. This old school scent is characterized by woody and aromatic accords. This would be used also in spiritual baths and is giving to the Vodou Spirits such as Erzulie Dantor, also Oya, Mami Wata. If your into neopaganism this is used for the Crone aspect of the Goddess.

Last we have POMPEIA" was created in 1907, it floral with an oriental note. This type of smell would have been popular in Ancient Egypt used in baths as well or worn by someone like Cleopatra. Some will offer it to La Sirène, Yemaya, Saint Clare of Assisi, sometimes Simbi even the Mothered Goddess in New age

Now the three together if you follow a ADR religion like it can represent the three Orishas like Oya, Oshun and Yemaya. In Vodou it would be Erzulie Dantor, Erzulie Freda and La Sirène.

In let's say Espiritismo I was told The Three Marias" generally refer to the spirits of Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Cleophas (also called Faith, Hope and Charity.) 👇

It can represent the three goddess. The Maiden, Mother, Crone. 👇

They can represent The Moirai or three Greek Goddesses of Fate and Destiny, or Moirae Mythopedia, also known as the Fates. They are Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. 👇

The Original Color of Erzulie Freda (Hazbin Hotel)'s Magic

At the beginning of time, Erzulie Freda's magic was actually the color rose. Maman Brigitte's pink magic is a different hue, but Erzulie Freda's rose magic was the same hue as Erzulie Dantor's red magic. The only different was the shade, where Erzulie Freda's magic was lighter and Erzulie Dantor's magic was a darker shade of red.

After their bitter argument, Erzulie Freda split off from Erzulie Dantor. This caused her magic to change in color from rose to light blue. She split off from Erzulie Dantor because she is the most emotionally intelligent of the Loa; this was her way of trying to respect her sister's boundaries.

Should the twin sisters ever reconcile, Erzulie Freda's magic would go back to being rose in color.

Qualidades nagô/vodun

Dan – Vodun conhecido e cultuado no ketu com o nome de Oxumare, é a cobra que participou da criação. É uma qualidade benéfica, ligada à chuva, à fertilidade e à abundância; gosta de ovos e de azeite de dendê. Como tipo humano, é generoso e até perdulário.

Vodun Dangbé – É um Oxumaré mais velho que seria o pai de Dan; governa os movimentos dos astros. Menos agitado que Dan, possui uma grande intuição e pode ser um adivinho esperto.

Vodun Becém – Dono do terreiro do Bogun, veste-se de branco e leva uma espada. Becém é um nobre e generoso guerreiro, um tipo ambicioso, combativo de Oxumaré, menos superficial que Dan. Aido Wedo, também é uma qualidade de Oxumaré conhecida no Bogun.

Vodun Azaunodor – É o príncipe de branco que reside no Baobá, relacionado com os antepassados; come frutas e “leva tudo de dois”.

Vodun Frekuen – É o lado feminino de Oxumaré, representado pela Serpente mais venenosa. O lado masculino de Oxumaré é geralmente representado pelo Arco-Íris.

Vodun Danbale ou Dambala - O reflexo do arco íris no mar calmo ou na lagoa, No vodu, Damballa é um dos mais importantes de todos os loa. Ele é tanto membro da família Rada como uma raiz, ou racine Loa. É representado como um serpente e associa-se estreitamente com cobras. Ele é considerado o pai de todos os loa e, juntamente com sua esposa/companheira Ayida Weddo, considerado no Vodou haitiano o Loa de criação.

Algumas de suas canções rituais indicam que ele "transporta os antepassados", na sua volta ao Ginen (casa espiritual do Loa, e o pós-vida). Sua esposa é a serpente arco-íris Ayida Weddo (ele também é casado com a Erzulie Freda). Como um loa da nação Rada está associado com a cor branca. Sua cor especial é o branco. Nomes alternativos: Damballa Weddo (filho de Odan Wedo), Danbala, Zombi, Danbala Wedo, Damballah Weddo, Danbhala Weddo.

O Orixá Oxumare possui ainda vários outros nomes na África como no Brasil, que como acontece com todos os outros Orixás, se referem a cidades, lendas ou cultos específicos de uma determinada região, e com isso ganha suas particularidades e costumes; alguns dessas outros nomes são: Akemin, Botibonan, Besserin, Dakemin, Bafun, Makor, Arrolo, Akotokuen, Kaforidan, Danjikú, Aido Wedo, Foken, Darrame, Averecy, Akoledura e Bakilá. Oxumare Araká é nome de uma mais antigas casas de candomblé na Bahia, o Ilê Axé Oxumare Araká.

Can a women marry a feminine Lwa like Erzulie Freda?

Hi,

The answer to this will change depending on who you talk to. There are people who will insist that same gender maryaj lwa will never take place, and there are people who will say it's fine, though less common.

I've seen women give rings to Freda and sign paperwork with her indicating a marriage, and I myself had a wibbly wobbly maryaj lwa because I am a masculine person who married masculine lwa while I wore masculine clothes, and also had female lwa come to my marriage, sit at the maryaj table, and formalize relationships.

How I have been taught is that you marry the lwa who ask, and who asks can lead to determining what needs to happen.

You didn't ask this specifically, but I'll say sexual orientation does not play into maryaj lwa. I know plenty of gay men who have married all the feminine lwa, and lesbians who married all the masculine lwa. Maryaj lwa isn't the same as our understandings of human marriage; it has nothing to do with attraction (though many folks experience attraction).
