Time to ramble about my Bone Shadows.

Or rather like. The main two.

Gretchen is an Irraka Bone Shadow, who experienced her first change when she was down in Missouri looking for birds while trying to complete research for her Doctoral Degree in Ornithology. While there, she met May, a local who offered to help show her around. Thing is, May is an Iron Master and Gretchen would have been easy prey for the hunt. Would have, except Gretchen, who was lost Wolf-Blood, experienced her first change when May attacked her. The two fought, with Gretchen eventually losing, mostly due to lack of experience.

In her pack, Gretchen is... borderline the leader, which is something that most folks meeting her wouldn't expect. She isn't the most smooth of people, but she has ambitious aims and in step with her wife, May, is one half of a dedicated duo intent on keeping their territory on lockdown.

What's really worth noting about Gretchen, though, is that she's a member of the Lodge of Doors. Her mentor there, a grizzled man by the name of Old Cutter, is a guy in her city who owns a rifle store. It's highly likely that if Gretchen weren't an Irraka, she would not have been able to track Old Cutter down and prove he was a member of the lodge, but the natural stealth of her auspice proved a major help. Upon introducing herself, Gretchen was allowed in as she passed the initial test of "prove we exist".

While most people overlook her because of her demeanor and apparent nervousness, Gretchen is one of the more menacing pack members, and she takes her duty very seriously.

The second, Erszebet, is a bit more off the wall, because she was born to the Predator Kings. That she is a Rahu, however, makes it clear that she was never scoured of her auspice. In fact, Erszebet was essentially believed to be useless in her youth, but she witnessed the brutality of the Predator Kings and took it to heart. When she was given to a pack leader as a mate, Erszebet managed to get away -- because the stress of the situation forced the first change out of her. She left the old leader with many deep scars and raged into a nearby campground, killing four people; when she woke up, she was naked and soaked with blood in the alley behind a club... two cities away from her origin point.

In her years as a Ghost Wolf, Erszebet did many, MANY rough jobs. She broke kneecaps and killed as needed -- and she doesn't know it, but one of the people who approached her was a Bale Hound, testing her for later use. After an incident involving a woman's runaway husband and Erszebet's baseball bat, she was dragged into a meeting, bound in silver-twined rope.

It is highly likely she would have been killed. However, it immediately became clear that she truly knew nothing of Uratha life. As such, she was taken in and allowed to adapt-- which led to her joining the Bone Shadows due to her curiosity about... well. The Hisil.

Erszebet is an unconventional Bone Shadow, which is likely why she wound up in the Lodge of the Throatcutter, a Lodge for Bone Shadows that pride themselves on being "rougher" than their kin. As her initiation, she had to hunt and kill a spirit stronger than she was.

Four hours later, Erszebet received her tattoo of admittance.

really enjoyed the scene in castlevania nocturne where drolta is like "we vampire are going to conquer everything and create a new world!" and olrox, who is explicitly stated to have been alive during the conquest of the aztec empire by white colonizers, is just like "yeah i've heard that one before"

What is a panel or sequence from the show that you did and are the most proud of? (Only if you can show that, not fishing for spoilers, just curious)

Hi there, thank you so much! I'm a character designer so I don't really work on sequences-- that's the work of story artists, although sometimes us designers are brought in for help with cleanup or doing layouts for keys.

From season 1 of Nocturne (since that's the one I can talk about) I think I had the most fun designing Erszebet's gown and Mizrak's outfit-- they're right in my wheelhouse of fantasy/historic/architectural and sexy monk knight so I was very stoked exploring both of those

Olrox will always deserve, okay?! But let’s get into that last gif shall we.👀 I don’t know about anyone else, but when Drolta demanded that Olrox BOW to Erzsebet, it just felt so racist to me!!! Like, I get it: since Erzsebet absorbed Sekhmet into herself (racist, but also powerplay, I outsmarted/took down a Goddess so I’m talking my shit), Drolta sees who she served as both a human priestess and a vampire servant (Sekhmet) and also the person who unfortunately defeated her (Erzsebet Bathory) and respects the 2-in-1 entity (host with two subconsciouses, one being a hijacked hostage). To Olrox, this is just another white woman vampire on a power trip and he’s being told to SUBMIT to her! I was mad right along with him! LOOK AT HIS FACE IN THAT LAST GIF! That man is outraged, beyond furious. That’s some ancestral anger right there! And speaking of ancestral anger, since we’re looking through both a racial and historical lens at the moment, y’all think Drolta was mad that this bloodthirsty white lady got the drop on her mistress or was it strictly a power thing/survival of the fittest thing with her?🤔

castlevania: nocturne 1.07 (2023)

Just binged Castlevania: Nocturne, and I enjoyed it.

Some people I guess are pissy that Annette is black now, but having never played Rondo of Blood (or got far enough in Dracula X) I don't mind it; this makes her more interesting than the classic damsel in distress she was in the game, plus it means she and Richter get to inherit the Battle Couple mantle from Trevor and Sypha. Also, considering the whole French Revolution setting and themes of liberation, it doesn't strike me as "woke." It'd be another story if previews were like "LOOK AT OUR STRONG INDEPENDENT HEROINE". Things are allowed to be diverse.

Richter overcoming his hangups and getting his magic back, tying that white wrap around his head and that rendition of Divine Bloodlines was just *chef's kiss*

Edouard's story and his history with Annette gave me some good feels. Interesting that Erszebet Bathory is the villain when her appearance in Bloodlines was set during World War I, but Netflixvania has made abundant anachronistic references to the games before, and sometimes you just need a famous folkloric vampire to be the big bad evil guy. I wonder if Richter and the gang will go on a road trip around Europe like John Morris and Eric Lecarde did in Bloodlines?

I can understand why some would feel Maria is annoying regarding her attitude towards the church (considering Blue Fangs in the previous series had a better understanding of God than plenty of people in real life), but her feelings are a bit understandable considering the Abbot actively doesn't help matters by calling revolutionaries "godless" and such. Also, bear in mind: This is the first season and Maria's still a teenager on top of wanting revolution, of course she's going to be acting insufferable. If there are future seasons, she might be forced to recognize the problem is that people are responsible for their actions and use faith to justify it, just as the Abbot has.
