Hi Ersher anon from a bit ago I’ve come with another question, do you have any thoughts on artemy’s mother? What she was like etc.
oh my god you do well to come back i had forgor💀 to reply again. you get a two for one deal.
as far as artemy's mother: she's [here]. i need to redraw her one day but she's one of the three p2 mothers i've drawn (her, stamatina, and dankovskaya). clay type of woman. even if she was a capital/western transplant to the town (as most of the non-Kin people used to be before they started popping out kids. orphans mostly. who didn't start off as orphan due to the Being born thing) i think she really quickly adopted the whole mother earth customs even without fully believe in them because Makes More Sense than sky father being father of everything and woman being born of man's rib, due to the She Can See Kids Are Born From Her. her clay (pottery) work kinda existed in this continuun of Creating Stuff, so was gardening. i think she did a lot of the plates & bowls & cups & whatnot that can still be found in the burakh's lair, all these little cups for mixing tinctures... i think she might even have made a first alambic prototype with a clay body, something like this.
i think she was weakened quite a bit by ersher's birth, and the second birth killed her.
i will not lie to you i don't think much about ersher because i love this ambiguity of it. i love that we know nothing about him except his bonds (burakh's brother, likely burakh's parents' son due to the Family thing), we don't know what he died of, at what age, and if artemy ever knew him. "My older brother. He died young." (artemy's quote) does not even tell us if he even knew ersher. it is implied they must've have at the very least cohabitated for a while, but maybe artemy just knows him from being told about him, but holds him dear enough that he calls him "older brother".
considering kids around 15yo are ruling the town, forming gangs and discussion politically-motivated loveless alliance marriages, i take "young" to mean "under 14", even younger than that. to me, ersher died around 10. i like the number 10, because it is the one who keeps coming back in p1 (10 years since the last outbreak). equally for that numerology grind, i think he and artemy have 5 years difference, for 5 is the number that comes back in p2 (last outbreak). so ersher died at 10 when artemy was 5. i'm not sure what i want him to have died of (.......... very strange formulation but you know what i mean). on one hand, i could see the steppe swallowing him. just straight up doing that. the steppe refuses to eat the elder burakh (cannot be buried, beginning of P2) because he has unfinished business at the surface, swallows the eldest son, refuses to eat the youngest because he must stay on the surface, he is the tether at the surface. i need to check the geology of that part of the eurasian steppe but this ^ would be inspired by something that happens in a land i love, where basically it's a mountain of sometimes-hollow limestone, covered with soft ground, and sometimes a hiker can fall through that soft ground into a big hollow, and never be found, or be found at hunting season when the hunting dogs sniff out the corpse. scary stuff. my other thought is he died... of something "stupid". something that now is very preventable, even easy to help with, but wasn't for a long, long while. cold. flu. some kind of vitamin deficiency. poisoning. tetanus (not "stupid", very dramatic and scary, the vaccine is from 1939). actually i might go with the tetanus thing: it's a really nasty, scary disease (like the pest), but not transmissible. it can happen from getting a wound infected. i think he was handling his father's tool, maybe to learn to butcher; got a cut; got infected; died.
i think artemy was not shielded from seeing this, even if his mother really insisted he be. i think he doesn't remember much, if anything of it; seeing illness does not trigger memory of his brother, but he has this. apple seed of grief inside of him. lodged somewhere all bitter and dark. i think it made him be a little morose as a person, which he still is, but it has been so long it has become his "baseline". i think artemy has very, very little memories of his brother; basically his brain is blank from 5yo and back, most of his core memories come from 7 & up, where he truly bonded with the friends he still has (still tries to keep). i think ersher's death devastated his mom, who was already weakened from the birth, and grief + weakness during the second birth killed her. now i could get into how isidor has made plenty of selfish choices which are are not yes no if you see it that was if you don't see it that way Selfish and he tries to justify and he doesn't and he knows and he doesn't... and what it could have meant for him to try to have a second kid when his wife was like that... because she's not the virgin mary that thang did not pop up like that... there is stuff to say there isn't. she wanted artemy too she did. she just didn't make it to see him.
ersher in my mind didn't get to like. be much of a person due to the Dead At 10 thing, but he was more jolly that artemy has ever been (also i think bc the second son was raised in more morose of an atmosphere, with a dad having already lost a son & his wife). he was a brunette ☝ in my mind mom's blonde & isidor was brown-haired (even if Bald), artemy got mom's blonde & ersher had dad's brown. i think he had his hair longer, And i think stakh, who knew him just a bit longer because barely older than artemy, because he has his whole. gestures. cain and abel if they (tried to) slayed (each other)/wants to be isidor's son sooo bad started growing out his brown hair for that. his problems and issues notice how i keep making it about him. stakh always at the scene of the crime.
basically yeah 👍 thank you for enjoy his mom i miss her so bad
#anonymous#ring ring (answers)#''i don't think much about ersher [ESSAY]''#artemy lore#burakh lore#isidor lore#ersher lore#ersher burakh#bozhena olegovna burakh#i miss her every day. vasilisa and yeva too tbf

———————————————
Childbirth was celebrated amongst the kin.
It was a blessing, an assurance that their culture would live a little longer.
Stanislav had only been two when Artemy had been born, but he remembered the celebration. The kin had been exulted and Isidor even more so. He had two beautiful baby boys. He hadn’t been taken into the Burakh family yet, but he had been called Artemy’s brother and that was all that had mattered.
It was ironic how much things had changed.

Chapter 3
“Mama…”
She buried her oddly-shaped and worn nails into her fists. Her mother’s fingers raked through her hair; her grip tugged on her scalp. “Would I…I know that it’s impossible, but if it weren’t, do you think…I don’t know, do you think I…”
Her words faded into nothing, swallowed up by the hollow of her shame, carved by vain impulses. Isidora pulled a section too hard. It was probably not intentional, but Artemiy dared not utter a sound in protest. Such was the punishment for vanity.
“Do I think you could what, kheerken ?”
Artemiy didn’t have to finish the thought. She could have lied, asked a question as innocuous as could she spend the night at Gravel’s this weekend. She could have dismissed the line of inquiry entirely. Instead, her spiteful tongue tripped over the stupid words and her voice was hardly a whisper. “Be menkhu?”

Excerpt: "Crippled Lifetimes in a Broken Dollhouse" - [Haruspex I]
It was done. Artemy Burakh’s life’s work had been concluded in the span of less than half a lunar cycle. The lifetime of a fly exceeded the extent of his labor, finished in a mangled heap like if one were to force a sown seed to flourish in but a day's time. He felt ragged and pulled apart, tugged by the innumerable lines hooked under his skin.
The Haruspex no longer remembered what life felt like before coming home. He couldn't tell if that was a particularly good thing, to be unmade and recentered in so little time. Birthed once more into a new existence defined by things he hadn't known existed but a month prior.
It was as if the tectonic plates of his heart had shifted, chasms burgeoning and newborn mountains towering over his menial priorities of before. Connections ruptured, paths formed anew, all strange and unknown.
Drawing his eyes away from a blurry haze of tepid water and dusty dishes, he caught sight of the town outside his old home's window. It was not his hometown, and the building he inhabited could hardly be reclaimed from the clutches of absolute tragedy. A roof was still a roof, nevertheless. He observed with melancholy as Murky sat on the old swing set, hinges creaking only when she shifted her posture, hunched and uninterested in playing, picking at loose strings in her threadbare clothes.
The girl sometimes looked sideways to the second swing, freely tugged by the wind. She would grow weary and hold it in place, palm on the seat to simulate a weight that wasn't present. At one point Artemy witnessed Murky putting her doll on the perch beside her, only for her expression to close and her arm to swing, batting the intruder away with a muffled exclamation in her miniscule voice. “You're not the one who should be sitting there. Nobody is. Not anymore.”
Why did the Burakh house curse itself to shelter a brokenly split family? No pairs, only halves too jagged from loss to fit together; men with no brides, children with no brothers. After all this heartbreak, the Ripper still could not spare his ward from the loss he'd felt so long ago. Murky had barely gained a sibling, only to lose him to the clutches of what she’d naively thought was a friend.
He wondered if Ersher would mind if he buried Sticky alongside him, so they could at least not be cursed to be as alone as those they left behind.
The window creaked, pulled shut by the wind. Foggy glass cracked before his tired visage, and he felt a foreign kinship with the inanimate.

some more bonus headcanons!
as a matter of complete coincidence, sticky kind of looks like ersher burakh. sticky's blonder, paler, has the freckles, and was malnourished for the first 12 years of his life, but they have very similar faces and that "i'm 80% limb and have the world's sharpest elbows" build.
notkin and grief are very distantly related. to simplify matters, they refer to each other as cousins. they aren't super close, but they get along well. they also didn't find out they were related until notkin was like, twelve.
capella loves to give people handwritten invitations to things. she has beautiful handwriting and will give you the most gorgeous breakfast invitation you've ever seen. it's also literally just an invitation to breakfast. she writes one of these to her father, who she literally lives with, almost every morning. it's just how she is.
grace can play the piano!
after the sand pest ends, lara works on opening up a school. this is an administrative nightmare, but it ultimately works out. she's able to recruit daniil and yulia to guest lecture in the higher level math and science classes.
there's an influx of new people who move to town-on-gorkhon post-sand pest because there's so many empty houses and open jobs. their relationships with people who were there through the plague are pretty strained for at least the first year or so. this also results in a new children's gang.
alexander block eventually returns to town-on-gorkhon after he retires from the army. this is at least partially because he's in love with lara ravel. it's a very strained and awkward situation overall. most of the townspeople are actively engaged in betting on if and when lara will kill him, and a sizable portion are betting that they'll marry each other. all mistresses refuse to comment on the situation either way.
have been playing pathologic 2 again so here are some more headcanons, straight from my brain to yours
sticky is near-sighted. artemy starts suspecting this about two weeks post-canon, and sticky gets glasses within a few months (the town does not have an optometrist, so they have to make a trip). he constantly gets smudges on the lenses and has a bad habit of falling asleep while wearing them.
stakh had a crush on lara when he was a kid. he also had a crush on ersher. and grief. and artemy. he's bisexual and deeply in denial about it. he's not going to realize he's bisexual for minimum two more years.
most of the kids with weird nicknames have known birth names, except for murky. she was so young when her parents and most of her neighbors were caught up in the first plague that everyone who knew it died. daniil makes an attempt at helping her choose a name by finding a complete list of all russian girl's names and reading them out loud to her several times. this does not work. after several years, she ultimately settles on mikhaila when necessary--it can be shortened to mishka, which is murky's name in pathologic classic and i believe all pathologic russian versions. still, she goes by murky as much as possible.
artemy wasn't able to graduate bc of the war, but he had enough formal education that he was drafted to serve as an army surgeon. this sucked so much. it ended when he got shot in the leg (this is how we get the bad knee) and honorably discharged. he was planning on finishing his last semester when the letter from isidor arrived.
there was a brief attempt from the olgimskys to negotiate a vlad jr. and maria kaina engagement when they were both teenagers. this went disastrously and everyone involved gave up on it less than 72 hours after it begun.

Pathologic Fic Recs
So since my fic is coming to an end, and it’s received so many more viewers than I ever expected, I’m going to shoutout some of my favourite patho fics that I’ve read or am currently reading, since so many writers in this fandom are BRILLIANT and I’d love to give them some more attention. I really haven’t made it through a lot of fic, so this list is rather limited (and has a LOT of burakhovsky, but not all). If anyone wants to add suggestions, please feel free to reblog and add, I’d really love some more to read, and perhaps other people do too! It would be cool to build on this! Titles are linked to the fics!
i will get up now and go about the city by Lvslie
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Teen, Words: 12869, Complete
The blooming twyre dizzies, but the point of touch is grounding. // His words, still, come clouded and vague, “This has happened before.” // “Not like this,” // Artemy’s voice is rough and curt. Hopeful again. “You never stayed.” // He blinks. “I can’t stay. It’s not how this works.”
[Or; Daniil starts remembering.]
A look at the concept of repeating loops, different timelines and the whole concept of pathologic as a game interacted with differently by players, through the eyes of Daniil. I know most people have read this by now, but it’s honestly a masterpiece that everyone should read if they can.
rien de rien by mrcogito
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Mature, Words: 5478, Complete
“I had a feeling.” // The music restarts, but there’s something off with the record—it’s scratchy, fuzzy still. Dankovsky doesn’t look at him, gone suddenly pale. “Feeling?” // “That I left something behind.” // “What?” // Artemy takes a breath. “You, I think.”
Or: a breaking point.
Another incredible writer, who manages to capture the characterisation perfectly in this post-diurnal getting together fic. The way they use tension is masterful, and the writing really gets you choked up at times. They also have further fics exploring these characters that I can’t wait to check out!
Old Black Train by mothi
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Teen, Words: 27687, Complete
After the Plague, Artemy travels to the Capital to understand the present, and finds the past.
Okay, I can’t do a patho fic rec without this instant classic. The less I say the better, but honestly I don’t think a fic has ever hit me so hard. I’m still absolutely overcome just thinking about it, and I read it in September. Do heed the warnings though.
it takes a dedicated hand by landrovaling
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Teen, Words: 18261, Complete
The Polyhedron falls. So does Daniil Dankovsky.
I had the honour of watching this fic come to fruition, it’s by a great friend, and honestly this is the softest post-diurnal Burakhovsky. It’s got all that you need! Fantastic interactions with the kids, lovely characterisation, hesitant burda, great dialogue... Check it out!
Tiptoe Through The True Bits by passionatememes and beavis
Pairing: Stakh Rubin/ Bad Grief, Rating: Teen, Words: 66,473, Ongoing
Grief and Stakh have a complicated history together. Their friends start conspiring so they might have a slightly less complicated future.
Okay everything by passionatememes is fantastic and you should check it out, but this Grief/Rubin longfic is coming along BRILLIANTLY so far. They have such an incredible dynamic, and I wasn’t a fan of the pairing until this fic dragged me in, oh I love them now. The way Micah and Beavis write all of the characters is fantastic- definitely check this one out if you like Artemy’s friend group (and the kids are here too... they are legends...)
Into The Wider World by godisadyke
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Teen, Words: 50,000, Complete
He was about to walk into a room of strangers, read for a role he knew nothing about in a play he knew nothing about—during their first rehearsal, nonetheless—all because some 19 year old told him to. Artemy’s breath caught in his throat. Who did he think he was? He was close to just turning around, leaving and pretending none of this ever happened.
ACTOR AU!!! So they’re actors huh? What about an on set romance fic? This premise is SO good and it’s shaping up to be a lot of fun so far, with a fantastic ensemble cast! The fun modern AU commentary of the meta that we all need!
how did we get here and how do we get back? by qawerian and seefaster
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Rating: Mature, Words: 40,743, Complete
After Dankovsky gets a mysterious invitation to a scientific conference in the Capital, Burakh and him decide to pay a visit to Daniil's hometown to figure out what's going on and to run some errands, while they're at it.
alternative title: the world's shittiest big city vacation
This is another premise I’ve been really excited about reading, it’s got a few concepts I’m interested in exploring in JTB verse, and the way it’s handled here is wonderful! Fantastic building of the Capital from a couple of people who have brilliant insight into it, it really hits the historical beats well, and there is a great plot surrounding them that’s keeping me on the edge of my seat. I’ve still got a bit to catch up on, but it’s been fantastic so far! Also I should mention the burda is SO SOFT and familiar, it’s melting me...
One and Two by jigsteppe
Pairing: None (focus is on Artemy and Ersher), Rating: None, Words: 1342, Complete
In which Artemy unexpectedly becomes an only child.
Micah sent this a few months ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s exploring Ersher’s death, and the impact it had on little Artemy, and damn, it hits SO HARD. It’s a very difficult fic, but worth it if you’re interested in Ersher. It provides some devastating ideas about his death, and it’s so well done. I can feel it in my chest.
My Immortell by candylemonsticks, tanzertime
Pairing: Artemy/Daniil, Artemy/Grief, Daniil/Grief, Rating: Mature, Words: 9212 (yup), Complete
Yes, this is exactly what you think it is. Yes, I cried laughing at it. I don’t think anymore needs to be said.
#pathologic#burakhovsky#fic recs#feel free to add more!#artemy burakh#daniil dankovsky#bad grief#stakh rubin#ersher burakh#want to give appreciation to fandom writers#but i havent read a lot myself#so id love some recs!

Ersher Burakh who was Artemy Burakhs brother was one day in the capitol cutting into a cadaver. He got a letter from his brother that said that plague and bandits were attacking his place and aksed him for help so he went.
Ersher Burakh got his cadaver shut down and wet up the stairs to get up the roof of the building where he left his reitwagen and normal people close because he was in his sturgeons gown. Ersher Burakh got on his motorcycl and said “it’s time for me to live up to my family name and face full life consequences” so he had to go.
Ersher Burakh ramped off the building and did a backflip and landed. He kept riding down the tracks and made sure there was no plague around because he did not have tincture.
The countrysides were nice and the grass was singing and the crows and the sun were almost down from the top of the sky. the mood was set for Ersher Burakhs quest to help his brother were he was. Ersher Burakh looked around the step and said “its a good day to do what has to be done by me to help my brother defeat the enemies.”
Ersher Burakh was late so he had to jump onto train to get there really fast. A coffin was hidden near so when Ersher Burakh went by a man crawled out and wanted to give him a deal. Here Ersher Burakh saw the first decision-driven consequence because the traveler was death and had a undesirable ending.
“I can’t give you my deal fellow traveler” Ersher Burakh said
“Why not?” said the fellow traveler back to Ersher Burakh.
“Because you are metafor for the inevitable of death” so Ersher Burakh shot the travelor in the head and got off the train thinking “my brother is in trouble there” and went faster.
Ersher Burakh had to go faster like the speed of sound and got there fast because Artemy needed him where he was. Ersher Burakh looked at the town signs and saw “Town-On-Gorkhon” with someons writing under it saying “ur hated here” and Ersher Burakh almost turned around but heard screaming like Artemy so he went faster again.
Ersher Burakh drove in and did another flip n jumped off his motorbike and the motor bike took out some arsonists in front of Ersher Burakh. Ersher Burakh smiled and walked fast. Ersher Burakh then looked at the ground and found tinctor so he pickd it up and threw fast at infected peaple in front of a house.
Ersher Burakh said “infected peaple leave this place” and the infected said “but this is our house” and Ersher Burakh felt sorry for them because they couldn’t live there anymore but they were infected so he blew up the house and killed the infected peaple so they were at piece.
Then Ersher Burakh heard another scream from his brother so he kept walking really faster to get where he was. Town-On-Gorkhon was nothing like the countrysides there was no crows singing and the tire were dead and the healers were argueing and teh dirt was messy and bloody from plague.
When Ersher Burakh got to where the screaming was started he found his brother Artemy Burakh fightin the polyhedronnn and Artemy said “Ersher Burakh! Over here!” so Ersher Burakh went there to where Artemy Burakh was fighting. Ersher Burakh fired his bullet from blocks cannon and the bullets went and shot the polyhedron in the tower and Simon’s goast couldnt see.
Artemy Burakh said “its time to ends this once and for all!” and punched the polyhedron in the blueprints and the polyhedron fell. Ersher Burakh said “thanks i could help, bro” and Artemy Burakh said “you should have come here earlier next time” and they stared at each other.
The stared over quickly though because Ersher Burakh yelled “LOOK OUT BRO!” and pointed up to the top of the sky. Artemy Burakh looked up and said “NOO! Ersher Burakh run out of here as fast as you can!” and Ersher Burakh walked really fast out.
Ersher Burakh looked back and saw Artemy Burakh get steppe’d on by the meta narrative and he was mad and angry.
“I’ll get you back evil makers!” Ersher Burakh yelled at the top of lungs.
to be continued…?
