Who were the ‘sons of iniquity’ who sought to discredit the prince? The statement that the king assured his son that his detractors would be judged by their peers in parliament has led some historians to assume that the prince was referring to members of the higher nobility. McFarlane described the prince’s demand as ‘virtually a request for the trial of Archbishop Arundel and . . . Thomas.’ It is, however, unsafe to assume that ‘peers’ was a synonym for ‘lords’ at this period, and it was not only lords who had peers, in the original sense of the word, in parliament. It seems at least equally possible that the detractors were knights and esquires who were in regular attendance upon the king. These faithful royal servants had enjoyed material rewards and a high degree of personal security during the reign of Henry IV, and may have feared that the prince’s prestige and ambitions already posed a threat to their privileged status. Certain of these men were among the king’s closest friends and may have vigorously resented the ‘disloyalty’ of the prince and his supporters in wishing to take control of the government while the king was still living.
Peter McNiven, "Prince Henry and the English Political Crisis of 1412", History, vol. 65, no. 213 (1980)
n.b. McNIven suggests that John Norbury, esquire, and Sir Thomas Erpingham may be possibilities. Erpingham, however, seems to have been trusted by Henry V long into his reign and imho is an unlikely candidate. I suspect William Gascoigne, the Lord Chief Justice, might be another suspect - he was dismissed from his post soon after Henry V's accession, contrary to Henry IV, Pt 2, where he is depicted as becoming the new king's mentor.

The Erpingham Gate provides an attractive entrance to the Norwich Cathedral close.  It was built around 1420 with funds provided by Sir Thomas Erpingham, one of the most powerful men in late 14th and early 15th century Norwich.  He is remembered primarily as the commander of Henry V’s archers at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Shakespeare referred to him as a 'good old knight' in his play Henry V.  Photos by Charles Reeza.

Wikipedia article of the day for May 17, 2021
Tumblr media
The Wikipedia article of the day for May 17, 2021 is Thomas Erpingham. Thomas Erpingham (c. 1355 – 27 June 1428) was an English soldier and administrator who served three generations of the House of Lancaster including two English kings. Through his access to royal patronage he acquired great wealth and influence. During the reign of Richard II he served under the King's uncle John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, in Spain and Scotland, and with his son Henry Bolingbroke on crusades in Lithuania, Prussia and the Holy Land. On becoming king, Bolingbroke rewarded Erpingham with senior appointments. Erpingham later helped suppress the Epiphany Rising and was appointed guardian of Henry's second son Thomas. He was a member of the Privy Council, acting at one point as marshal of England. In 1415 Erpingham served as a knight banneret in Henry's campaign in France and commanded the archers at the Battle of Agincourt. He was a benefactor to the city of Norwich, where he had built the main cathedral gate which bears his name.

Henry IV's great misfortune was to become sick just at the moment when he appeared to have won his dynasty a measure of security. Despite the imprecision of contemporary descriptions, there is enough correlation between them to indicate that Henry suffered from more than one medical condition. The skin disease – perhaps psoriasis – mentioned in 1387–8, 1399 and 1405 probably grew more acute as he aged, and the graunde accesse he suffered in 1406 is likely to have been a prolapsed rectum. His collapse in the summer of 1408 was probably a coronary thrombosis, resulting in blocked arteries and steadily increasing problems with blood circulation, leading eventually to necrotic ulcers which, by the last year of his life, seem to have turned gangrenous (the ‘festering’ or ‘putrefaction’ mentioned by Usk and Strecche). During the last months, perhaps years, of his life, Henry must have endured great pain, retaining his regnal power until the end only through a ferocious effort of will. Yet what followed the onset of his illness vindicated his rule. That there were rivalries and policy disagreements was inevitable, but they were contained (unlike in France), and in general the collective willingness of the extended Lancastrian clan to place the preservation of royal authority above personal interests was impressive. This was the moment that witnessed the coalescence of that familial system of government – revolving around the prince and future king, his brothers, his uncles Henry and Thomas Beaufort, Westmorland, and adopted sons such as Chichele, Erpingham, Tiptoft and Langley – which for the next twenty-five years, through Henry IV's illness, Henry V's absences, and Henry VI's minority, worked to ensure the survival of the Lancastrian dynasty into the second half of the fifteenth century.
